Porkers win D1 State Field Hockey Championship Walpole ends drought over Andover in playoff finals

There has never been a season where the Walpole Porkers didn't strive for yet another state championship, and this season was no exception. With two consecutive years of devastating losses to Andover, the team was ready for revenge; therefore, this game had both teams hungry to earn the title of Massachusetts 2023 Division I State Champions.

During the 2021 and 2022 season, Walpole has made it all the way to the final rounds of the tournament, only to be met with a loss from Andover High School. These defeats have left the Porkers with more motivation than ever during this past 2023 season.

“I would definitely say my motivation was the desire for redemption. For the past two years, I have experienced a loss in the D1 State championship and I am determined to change that pattern.” said Captain Katie Colleran. “Every year when starting a new season I always have a bit of doubt if we will be able to meet the standards of the previous year, including this year, fresh off a runners up outcome my junior and sophomore year […] but I know that

this team is just as capable, if not more capable than previous years.”

Saturday, Nov. 18, had many fans driving to WPI college to cheer on the Porkers. From the start, the energy was high with the stands packed with Walpole families and fans, the team was ambitious to break the pattern of losses

“I really think this all depends on what type of energy we bring to the table as a team. If we come out flat then we won’t have a chance, but if we come together and start out each game strong then we will perform much better.” Colleran said.

Right off the bat, the Porkers came in strong with 3 offensive corners. With only a minute and a half left in the quarter, sophomore Kate Schneider made a strong pass to junior Izzy Adams who then ripped a shot from the stroke line right into the net. The first goal of the game was a huge accomplishment, but little did they know it would be their winning goal.

The second quarter became less consistent for both teams, however the energy was still high. With many attempts throughout each quarter, there were no goals in either net. Nearing the end of the half, Adams got carded and had to remain out of

the game for the rest of the second quarter. Though the team was down a key player, that didn't stop the Porkers from turning down any attempts Andover had at scoring. With only one more half left to go, the pressure wore down. Andover was able to bring about two offensive penalty corners. This gave senior goalie Abby Jonhson the opportunity to make two huge saves in hopes of stopping any attempts of advancing. These defensive plays for the Porkers were something they weren't going to let slide, and the team was able to turn the field around and cause two defensive corners for Andover.

As the last 15 minutes

were approaching, many shots were taken but nothing seemed to become a goal. As the game was nearing five and a half minutes left, Andover called a time out. This gave the Porkers time to recharge and get back on the field with hopes of scoring again. Though Walpole was unsuccessful by scoring on the Andover goalie once more, the team successfully claimed their thirteenth D1 State Championship title. The seven year championship drought has now finally come to an end. All fourteen of the seniors can officially carry on the true legacy of being Walpole Porker Alumni with this state championship title.

Walpole falls in Super Bowl to Milton 42-21 Milton wins its first MIAA Football championship over Walpole

The Walpole varsity football team traveled to Gillette Stadium to play in the MIAA Division III State Championship against the Milton Wildcats. The Wildcats defeated the Timberwolves 42-21 to clinch their first MIAA Super Bowl championship in school history.

Walpole got off to a quick start, similar to their regular season matchup back on Oct. 13. A 1-yard rushing touchdown from senior running back Logan Keyes, a 68-yard receiving touchdown from senior wide receiver Kamari Hughes and two extra points from senior kicker Nicholas Foynes put the Timberwolves up 14-0 early in the first quarter. Milton was off to a rough start, but that would change quickly. Sophomore wide receiver

for the Wildcats Ronan Sammon and senior running back Nathan Ehui helped bring back the momentum for Milton. Sammon caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback and defensive back Patrick Miller to make the score 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Miller continued to carve the Walpole defense with two more touchdown passes in the second quarter. First, a 4-yard touchdown pass on a bootleg to senior wide receiver William Renz, and then to Sammon again with a 24-yard touchdown pass after junior quar-

terback Noah Mackenzie fumbled the football and turned it over to Milton. These scores from Milton’s offense put them up 21-14, a score the Wildcats would not relinquish. With 1:47 left in the second quarter, Walpole looked to score again before the end of the first half. On the first play of the Timberwolves’ drive, Mackenzie tried to connect with junior Matthew St. Cyr. The pass, however, was deflected by Miller and intercepted by Milton. Junior Harrison Hinckle would return it to the endzone for another Milton touchdown. Walpole’s momentum stalled from there as Milton piled on more points in the fourth quarter. The game would end with a final score of 42-21. For Wildcats' head coach, Steve Dembowski and its players, this is something they will celebrate for years to come as they clinch their first MIAA Super Bowl victory.

WHS drama club performs fall musical, “Annie”

Annie hits the stage captivating audience and showcasing talent

On Friday, Nov. 17, the Walpole High School (WHS) Drama club hit the stage and performed Annie for family and friends in the auditorium. Tickets sold online and at the door for $15 and seats filled up quickly. The cast performed for two more days following its initial production, and with support from the Humane Society club who sold baked goods such as cookies and brownies for those watching the musical. Furthermore, members of the TV class and Walpole tech crew supported the making of the show.

Directed by WHS music teacher, Kendra Nutting, the sentimental, classic musical follows an orphan girl, Annie, played by senior Alex Richardson, and her journey of being taken in by a billionaire for Christmas in New York during the Great Depression. The audience follows Annie’s struggle to escape the grasp of her evil orphanage mistress, all while trying to discover who her true parents are with the help of billionaire, and new found friend, Oliver Warbucks. Through the utilization of special effects, singing and dance, the humor-filled and light-hearted performance demonstrated considerable hard work and dedication from members of the drama club. The WHS band even showcased their talent as they orchestrated pieces and were able to display their instrumental skills throughout the show. Furthermore, various props were incorporated and utilized during the show to bring the performance to life, which consisted of a Christmas tree, along with detailed costumes and a changing electronic backdrop. All of the special effects were prompted by members on the tech crew. The production additionally included a cast member’s Golden Opportunities

for Independence (GOFI) dog to portray Annie’s dog, Sandy.

The cast consisted of 23 WHS students, almost doubling its 12 cast members from last year. With their black and white headshots on the wall, audience members were able to take a glimpse into who the performers truly are with an added short biography. The performers and staff have been working on Annie since September, and have spent long hours after school perfecting the musical. They have been composing choreography, practicing lines and rehearsing multiple songs. However, the WHS Drama club is unfortunately coming to an end soon for many graduating seniors, and Annie served as a last performance for a few.

“This is my last musical of Walpole High School, and although it is my last show, I have taken so many experiences from this cast and used it to benefit my future,” said senior Max Grant, who played Oliver Warbucks in the production.

“I think it is the greatest gift I have, I can not thank everyone who was a part of this enough.”

The WHS drama club’s next play will be “Radium Girls,” written by D.W. Gregory, and will be taking place this upcoming winter. The plot of “Radium Girls” follows the true stories of women working in a lab during the early 1900’s. The main characters are Grace, Irene, and Kathryn who all work for the U.S Radium Plant are ordered to paint. The ladies begin to notice their health declining, but the plant owners discourage the girls to speak out about their issues. The play will emphasise the ideas of science, power and highlight the injustices that early American laborers have faced. Anybody interested in joining the drama club and being a part of this performance can contact Kendra Nutting for more details about the upcoming production.

NHS students begin personal service projects

Seniors are set to work towards individual volunteering goals

To be an active National Honor Society (NHS) student, members must attend monthly chapter meetings, volunteer three and chair one group service project every two months and complete a long term individual service project over the course of the year. As winter break approaches, NHS members at WHS are beginning to plan and set forth their individual service projects. Students are given the opportunity to create their own service idea and decide how they wish to enact it. Some are projects that stu-

dents have started previously and choose to continue, such as Dylan Bent’s Soles4Souls drive and Samantha Le’s Red Cross Club, while others are completely new.

In the first two weeks of December, senior NHS member Ariana Kreuzer is running a new project: the Yuda Bands Bracelet Project. Yuda Bands is a nonprofit organization that funds the education of students in developing countries by partnering with Guatemalan artisans and selling their handmade bracelets. The Yuda Bands Bracelet Project does this with the help of American students and schools, where those participating can choose a student to sponsor from countries including Zimbabwe and Guatemala. Kreuzer, partnering with the Red Cross Club, will sponsor a girl named Zirce, who hopes to graduate high school and pursue a bachelor’s degree in a technology-related field. Through the project, Kreuzer will help fund Zirce’s education and aid her in reaching her goals.

“I feel like I really connected with Zirce; we both want to go into computer-based fields, and we both love art,” Kreuzer said. “It’s really special to be able to have such a positive impact on someone’s life, and I’m really thankful for Yuda Bands allowing me to do so.”

Additionally, seniors Co-

lin Mahoney and Abhiram Josyula are also running a coat drive to collect winter coats for those in need. They are working with Anton’s cleaners with the goal of helping those in need gain access to warm clothes this winter season.

Mahoney and Josyula are looking to collect up to 75 warm winter coats, ranging between child and adult sizes. Once collected, the coats will be cleaned by Anton’s Cleaners and donated to individuals in need. The donations are made available to over 90 distribution partners, and recipients will receive the coats free of charge. This is just the start of many projects that WHS will see, each helping a variety of aspects within the Walpole community.

WHS Student Council hosts annual pep rally

Students and teachers gather to celebrate school spirit

The day before holiday breaks are always exciting for students and teachers. Particularly, the day before Thanksgiving break, Walpole High makes the half day memorable and fun. Every year, teachers hold an annual activity day where students are able to sign up for three different activities with their friends. Students can use the time to work with teachers, celebrate the upcoming holiday season or simply relax. For the last event of the day, students are invited to watch and take part in the Walpole High’s annual Pep Rally, and this year’s was certainly one to remember.

This is led by the WHS Student Council (STUCO), as the group devotes lots of time and effort when it comes to the Pep Rally. The preparation for this event, however, is very particular and special. The three week process included junior leaders Jenna Wong and Alexa Sirard, as they fulfilled their roles of Executive Board Members, alongside STUCO Co-Presidents Faith Heffernan and Kevin Needham.

“The entire school en-

gaging and enjoying one event is unique and special to the Pep Rally,” Faith Heffernan said.

The Pep Rally has multiple events every year, but this school year students were able to watch their peers participate in a money grab, dodgeball, three legged race, pie eating and musical chairs. STUCO considered that underclassmen may feel disincluded, since upperclassmen usually take the most part in this event, and ultimately decided dodgeball should have grade-wide teams.

“We started with freshmen versus sophomores, and then followed up with juniors versus seniors. After, the winning grades of the two games played. I think Dodgeball was a successful game and I hope the game continues in the upcoming years,” Heffernan said.

Each year, the gym also gets decorated by members of STUCO with streamers, balloons, and banners for each student section. Each event additionally has certain materials needed to make them happen, which the group also supplies.

“On the day of the Pep Rally, our council met for the first session of Timberwolf

Wednesday to discuss the logistics of the event and for the second session of the day, our entire council decorated the gym and got the materials we needed ready,” Heffernan said.

This year’s Pep Rally was exceptional, as students celebrated school-wide accomplishments, and were able to look forward to events that followed. The PowderPuff game was happening after school, along with Football’s Thanksgiving game the next day and the Division III

Super Bowl championship game the following week. In addition, STUCO announced that WHS was recognized for the school’s inclusion, respect and advocacy, shown with a large banner. These events had students excited at the Pep Rally, creating an upbeat and united atmosphere throughout the gymnasium.

“I believe school spirit is important because it forms a sense of community between students to be able to share a unified pride for Walpole,” Heffernan said.

The truth about being vegetarian on holidays This “healthy” lifestyle is not as glamorous as it seems

Many big holidays are all about the big buffet: the ham, the roast beef, the gravy. The list could go on and on. So much time and effort is put into preparing these courses, that it truly feels terrible to not be able to appreciate them in full. The vegetarian diet means eating unconventional meals on holidays, as most have some form of meat as the main course.

On holidays especially, a vegetarian at the table watches the other guests load up their plates with as much food as their hearts desire, while he or she most likely has as many as five options. This usually means resorting to taking double the amount of servings than the other members at the table.

A typical vegetarian plate at holidays such as Christmas may receive comments about how healthy it is or questions if the person is cutting back to try to lose weight. Rather than a full plate of ham and turkey, the plate will have only a few scoops of mashed potatoes and a side of green beans—not the most traditional of meals. This makes it impossible to fill up on dinner

alone and can also lead to devouring more dessert than intended.

Unfortunately, this process also happens outside of holidays. It is an almost daily reality for most vegetarians as the options for proteins and certain nutrients are scarce if meat is cut out of a diet. Vitamin D, for example, is present in some plant sources. However, vitamin D3 is a version that is only found in animals. Low vitamin D levels, as well as low calcium levels, can lead to brittle bones. This is a disease called osteoporosis, which leaves individuals more susceptible to fractures. Zinc is another nutrient that is commonly found in animals, helping boost the immune system and metabolic rates. Fortunately, it can be found in vegetarian foods, such as sunflower seeds. A lack of protein can be dangerous if it is rarely reached. Protein, especially animal protein, is rich in iron, which assists blood cells in transporting nutrients throughout the body. Low iron levels can lead to fatigue, increased heartbeat and overall weakness.

Though scarce, there are a handful of protein-rich vegetarian food items. Any form of nuts are a good source, but many people either suffer from allergies or

are simply uninterested in this option. If allergies are not the issue, nut butters tend to appease more appetites than the nuts alone. A handful of almonds, smoothies, protein bars and Greek yogurt are some of the few snacks that are full of enough protein to allow vegetarians to reach their daily intake.

The stigma surrounding vegetarians is that they are all prioritize health. However, this is far from the truth. As previously mentioned, a lack of protein leaves the consumer to never feel fully satisfied. This brings an onset of craving and, in some cases, binge eating. In many cases, becoming vegetarian is linked to distorted eating; after all, it is a diet. Those

who struggle with unhealthy eating patterns may choose to cut out entire food groups, such as meats, in attempts to keep weight off. This can be the same reason that many join extreme diets such as keto, juice diets, sugar free diets and many more.

Whether it be the daily struggles or those on major holidays, vegetarians are left to be cautious of their food intake while others get to enjoy their meals carefree. For those who are not on diets, it is important to remember that food related holidays can become big stressors for anyone who struggles with anxiety surrounding food, and to consider those with dietary restrictions.

Children are deserving of owning dogs
The reasons why dogs are essential to child development

Growing up, it is not uncommon for kids to beg their parents for a puppy. Their parents, in return, often say how much work they are and how they do not want to be responsible for taking care of it; however, the pros of owning a dog greatly outweigh the cons. Dogs not only contribute to the development of responsibility for children but also provide emotional support for children of all abilities and ages.

The classic excuse that dogs are too much work has officially become outdated and irrelevant. In an age of “gentle parenting” with little responsibilities for children, owning a dog inevitably teaches kids basic responsibilities to care and look after it from a young age. Simple tasks such as walking, feeding and cleaning up after a dog creates structure and routine for kids who may otherwise be exempt from chores and other household contributions.

Claiming that a dog is “too much work” can instead be translated into an opportunity to teach a child the importance of caring for and looking after it; furthermore, a puppy only requires an immense amount of work in its early stages.

Once a puppy grows into a dog and becomes used to routine, dogs can be fairly low maintenance depending on the breed.

In addition to the external benefits that come from owning a dog, the significant impacts are entirely internal. Especially after the recent spike in child anxiety rates because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to find effective and safe remedies.

According to a study conducted at the Bassett Medical Center in New York, featured in an NBC news report, “just 12 percent of children with pet dogs tested positive for clinical anxiety, compared to the 21 percent of children without a dog.”

Dogs have additionally proven to lower blood pressure, heart rate, the general risk of asthma and allergies in children and adults. Allergies are a major concern that has recently been addressed thanks to developments in selective breeding of hypoallergenic dogs. Dogs bred with poodles to create “doodle” mixes generally do not shed and are safe for those even with severe allergies. Although allergies may be sensitive to saliva regardless, exposing children to dogs, hypoallergenic or purebred, will ultimately build up immunity and a tolerance to dogs from a young age. Dogs have also evidently proven that they are major contributors to mental health

improvements in an era of an international mental health crisis.

Dr. Anne Gadomski, pediatric specialist, wrote that “from a mental health standpoint, children aged 7 to 8 often ranked pets higher than humans as providers of comfort and self-esteem and as confidants” in the journal of Preventing Chronic Disease for the CDC.

Dogs radiate off of human emotional cues that determine their responses in building relationships with their owners. Licensed therapy dogs are specialized in providing calming companionship to those who struggle with mental health concerns, illness and disabilities. When visiting a hospital, it is common to come across dogs wandering the halls visiting patients from room to room to deliver a feeling of comfort and love. For children with severe disabilities such as autism or nonverbal impediments, dogs provide a loving companionship that exposes them to the partnership they are deprived from in human interactions. Dogs are not selective of looks, wealth or ability; instead, they simply reciprocate the love they receive. There is a reason why dogs are considered “a man’s best friend,” since they inhabit the qualities of loyalty and unconditional love.

Social media can be utilitized for positivity Creators are encouraging self-positivity for younger audiences

Over the past years, a strong stigma has grown around the use of social media. Teenagers are exposed to numerous influencers in the most impressionable years of their lives. Social media can create insecurities among teenagers due to unattainable standards of appearance; however, certain influencers are working to discard the unhealthy mindset of comparison instilled in younger audiences.

“Social media definitely ruins one’s perception of body image. Over the past few years, we’ve made it normal to scroll on our phones for hours, seeing hundreds of other people’s bodies, faces, and lives. It’s so hard for people — let alone young people — to try not to compare their bodies to someone else’s”, content creator Spencer Barbosa said. With creators such as Spencer Barbosa taking over media platforms, social media’s history of damaging teenagers’ mental health is now being acknowledged. Countless content creators are using their platforms in progressive ways in an attempt to teach self-love and acceptance.

“I want to just inspire people to live their best life, and

at the same time I want to be able to share the life that I’m living and loving—and do it in a way that is inspiring other people to do the same,” content creator Lexi Hidalgo said. “To trust their gut, trust their intuition, and chase their dreams. And it’s so cheesy for me to say it all out loud, but that really is the goal. That’s all I’ve really ever really wanted to do.”

Hidalgo’s morals and goals transfer onto her younger audience, inspiring them to live a more positive lifestyle. Her platform has expanded beyond TikTok impacting many fan’s lives. Opening up a phone to uplifting content is refreshing when scrolling through the constant negative comparisons within social media.

“Lexi has just altogether made me want to be a better person. She really keeps me grounded and her content is always uplifting and refreshing to find when I’m on my phone”, said an anonymous Walpole High School student.

Social media has a reputation for destroying teenagers’ self-images, especially regarding their body types. Content creators like Lexi Hidalgo and Spencer Barbosa strive to change any self-doubt that content consumers have about themselves. Along with teaching self-love, Barbosa’s platform in particular is

used to spread beliefs in authenticity and following your dreams. Barbosa felt as though a vital role was missing in her childhood, which she hopes to fulfill for future generations to come.

“I’ve always wanted to become the person I didn’t have— but really needed—when I was younger. I saw that ‘reality’, ‘body image,’ ‘self-love,’ and ‘embracing your flaws’ videos were missing on the internet, so I filled that gap myself”, Spencer Barbosa said.

With all the efforts in place to improve younger audiences’ views on self-image, content creators are looking for a shift in the way younger generations view themselves through the use of social media. Social Media has been feeding into unrealistic views and expectations for years now; regardless, with an emergence of body positivity encouragement, society can further away from the stigma of social media, and create a healthy presence.

Gift giving has lost its traditional meaning Social media’s causing gift giving to become excessive

The prominence of gift giving on social media is diminishing the value and meaning of receiving gifts. In particular, many videos on the platform TikTok are receiving copious amounts of attention and likes for ideas that suggest your boyfriend, girlfriend or friend needs to get you a “boo basket” or “burr basket”, which includes a variety of presents. It’s a ridiculous trend that corrupts generosity; additionally, gifts used to be rare and surprising, however, social media is influencing the standard of gift giving and turning it into a regular habit rather than rarity. Giving a gift to someone should come from the heart and infrequently to preserve the heartfelt meaning a gift should symbolize. Although some people’s love language is gift giving, even then it can become excessive and repetitive. It’s crucial to not create a trend in society for repetitive gift giving because it diminishes its value and sets a social standard of giving gifts for trivial events. This standard would financially burden those who do not have enough money to be spending frivolously.

Social media, mainly platforms such as TikTok and Instagram are pushing products to viewers screens, specifically around the holidays. This tactic influences consumers to buy products that they don’t even need. Additionally, the trends showcasing buying gifts for every minor event can cause people to believe they are required to buy items that are just a waste of money. Each trend created by an influencer has a deeper purpose that viewers are unaware of. Influencers are being paid to support products they deem necessary to give to others.

According to Joel Waldfogel, an economist at the University of Pennsylvania, “We value items we receive as gifts 20 percent less, per dollar spent, than items we buy for ourselves”.

This research indicates that gift giving is also not as appreciated by others as the products we buy on our own. This is mostly due to the fact that nobody can know the perfect present for someone unless they are told by that person. That’s why choosing a gift for someone can be a stressor for many people, and they end up spending money just for the item to be returned by the receiver.

Not only is gift giving becoming excessive on social media,

but when someone repeatedly “love bombs” someone with gifts, it should be a warning sign in a relationship. There is a clear distinction between generosity and over-gifting, which is essential to developing a healthy romantic or platonic relationship. Generosity is giving something with no strings attached, expecting nothing in return and only giving the present out of the goodness of your heart.

On the other hand, overgiving is a sign of an unhealthy relationship because it involves gift giving in place for an apology and for their feelings. Not only

does excessive gift-giving build unhealthy bonds, but it also can be a sign the over-giver shows narcissistic behaviors and gives gifts to show off their wealth or to make up for their toxic behaviors. Although gift giving can be a beneficial way to express one’s appreciation, it is pertinent not to over-give due to its detrimental effect on relationships. Gift giving is a difficult task, especially without immense knowledge on the person. Excessive gift giving is becoming standardized by social media, and it’s obvious this trend of over-giving must end.

On top of that, 17 food and beverage establishments cover the 10,000 square feet of Snowport. Some of these food and beverage sources hosted include North East of the Border tacos, plant-based sweet treats from Clarke’s Cakes & Cookies, Cheese Louise famous grilled cheese and

Breezy Hill Orchard donuts and cider.

Betty the Yeti, Snowport’s mascot, will be making appearances all throughout Snowport’s 2023 win tertime season. According to Snow port legend, Betty made her return to Snowport after a long, relaxing vaca tion in the Himalayas over the summer. Many guests are thrilled to take photos and meet with the large pink yeti. Fur thermore, merchandise such as a Bet ty plush, clothing and even drinks are available for visitors to purchase to ex press their endearment for the character.

Additionally, Snowport held a writing contest for students between ages six to eight, encouraged to write short stories about their mascot. As a result, over 826 students entered and wrote their own personal narratives, and were even given the chance to have them formally printed. If one wants to read these stories, Snowport has pub lished a book that is available with every Betty-themed item purchased.

Snowport in Boston encaptures the holiday spirit so many are yearning for. Walking around Boston and absorbing the scenery and decorations can spark excitement and anticipation for the winter season. Ultimately, the entire atmosphere of Snowport promotes an inclusive and pleasurable winter experience that provides the perfect place to stroll around with friends and family and to just simply enjoy oneself.

Dylan Bent receives DAR Good Citizen Award Bent is recognized for his

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution annually present their Good Citizen Award to one senior at Walpole High School. This award was created in 1934 with the purpose of supporting and rewarding good citizenship, specifically to high school seniors. To be nominated for this award one must embody traits of patriotism, service, leadership and dependability. The Aaron Guild Chapter of DAR, which runs out of Norwood, selects various students for this award, including WHS students.

On Nov. 8, the DAR association awarded Walpole High School senior Dylan Bent with the DAR Good Citizen Award. The process of being selected for this award starts with teachers at WHS selecting finalists for the award, in which they look for students who embody the traits DAR highlights. Then, the senior student body votes on who they believe most represents the traits of a good citizen.

“I was really happy that other people thought I embodied the traits of a good citizen, and that’s something I’m really proud of,” Bent said.

service, leadership and patriotism

At the ceremony, Bent received a certificate of the award, an American Flag and a pin with 13 stars on it to represent the original 13 colonies of the United States. However, Bent will be given the official award at the WHS graduation and additionally receive money from the organization.

Bent participates in many extracurriculars, including student council, where he is on the executive board as a Publicity Coordinator. He is the current Vice President of Best Buddies, a club which he has been a part of since freshman year. Bent also frequently volunteers at the New Life Furniture Bank and participates in a leadership program for students. He is also captain of the Walpole Cross Country team, which he has been a part of all four years of high school.

Bent also ran a shoe drive the past two years for the organization Soles4Souls and plans on running it again this year. Soles4Souls is a non-profit that sends shoes to people in need all over the world. The organization’s overall goal is to provide relief to the less fortunate through receiving donations of used shoes. Bent ran his shoe drive during the 2021 and 2022 school years and collected over 2,500 pairs

of shoes for the organization to send to the less fortunate.

“I think I’ve benefited the community through my shoe drive, because honestly it’s the best thing I’ve done,” said Bent. “I’ve gotten to collect thousands of pairs of shoes that have been sent all over the world to people in need.”

Even on top of the stress that comes with senior year,

community involvement is still a large priority for Bent. With his consistent community dedication, Bent hopes to continue helping others and volunteering his time in Walpole.

“I think just being a good person is benefiting the community because people see what you’re doing and they do the same,” said Bent.

WHS Dance Company welcomes new director

Molly Rockwood implements change from traditional season

Extracurriculars are crucial within a high school student’s career; they teach unity but also enforce prosperity. For years, Walpole High School’s Dance Company (WHSDC) has provided opportunities for individuals to express their passion through the art of dancing. It follows a traditional structure of weekly to daily practices and rehearsals that lead up to a major performance, typically held in the spring. In addition, each performance highlights a specific theme that structures each of eight different dances. This year, Molly Rockwood has taken over the company as the company’s new director and intends to implement a new approach this upcoming season.

Arguably, one of the most prominent factors within dancing is the level of creativity. Within the dancing world, obtaining a creative spark is quintessential to produce successful choreography, stage direction, etc. at all levels and ages. As for WHS’s Dance Company, there is only a singular theme within each performance that constricts the level of expression.

“I think the most important aspect of the WHSDC legacy

is finding the balance of independence within collaboration, which is a skill that everyone needs no matter where their life may lead them.” Rockwood said. “The main way we are planning to work towards these goals is focusing on the creative process rather than the creative product.”

To begin incorporating a vast range of talent, Rockwood has entertained the idea of replacing the annual spring performance with a variety of smaller events throughout the year. This new structure would allow the dancers to showcase various dance genres and specific talents throughout the season.

“While there is no definite answer, I can say that the company is not focusing on creating [such] a performance.” Rockwood said. “Right now, things are not the same as when the pandemic first shut down the show in 2020, and although change is hard, change is also what makes us grow.”

Although a final showcase has served as one of the most memorable and cherishing moments for WHSDC alumni and current members, implementing more consistent smaller shows allows the team to grow and learn more as dancers. In addition, it allows the opportunity for each dancer to perform

in solos, duos or groups, when only older members are typically given the chance to showcase each. Rockwood’s qualified dance experience and achievements throughout her dancing career allows the team to adapt and grow for this upcoming season.

“I have always loved dancing and dance as a larger artform. I grew up dancing at one of the local studios in town, I majored in dance in undergrad, and I completed my masters in clinical mental health counseling with a focus in Dance/Movement Therapy.” Rockwood said. “Dance is something that I feel has always been a part of my life, and I deeply appreciate that I have the outlet

and support to continue fostering young dancers’ passions as well.”

Furthermore, performing in smaller shows allows the company to expand beyond Walpole High’s auditorium; instead, the focus can be shifted to connect with more community members. A major goal for the upcoming season is to highlight the Company throughout Walpole.

“While we may not be on the stage with the audience in the seats, we will still be performing different works for anyone and everyone in different locations. Who knows, maybe what you see the first time will be entirely different than what you see the next time.” Rockwood said.

The ultimate affordable holiday gift guide

Gift ideas to purchase for every type of person

Gift giving is one of the most essential parts of the holiday season. Exchanging gifts and watching peoples faces light up when they open their presents is, arguably, one of the best feelings. However, finding the right gifts for different types of people can be challenging as everyone has different hobbies, interests and things they enjoy. Not only that, but finding affordable gifts can be a struggle when trying to purchase something someone will truly enjoy. However, gift giving does not have to cause stress around the holidays. This holiday gift guide will assist you in finding affordable gifts that will leave everyone happy as well as your wallet!

Finding gifts for parents can definitely seem more challenging than for friends. Sometimes, it feels like parents already have everything; additionally, many parents say they do not even need anything for the holidays. That, however, is not the case as there are some narrowed down, affordable gift options to get parents that they did not even know they needed. Moms typically love anything regarding their children. Getting them a piece of jewelry, like a necklace or bracelet, with their childrens initials is an extremely heartfelt gift they will love and that can be found at an affordable price. Amazon and Etsy have great choices

to pick from. With the option to choose initials featured alongside the color is sure to make any mom extremely happy.

Another great gift for moms are slippers. Some slippers can be expensive; however, there are still really nice, cheap options at Target, Amazon, Walmart, TJ Maxx and Marshalls. They offer great styles of slippers with different designs and colors to pick from. Lastly, moms work really hard at balancing careers while prioritizing families, so a creative gift to make is a self care basket. Five Below is the perfect store to go to for this gift, as they have great skincare and shower products, fun treats and baskets to create an inexpensive but personal gift.

Gifts for dads also do not have to be as challenging as it seems. Most of the time, dads lack necessities, so focusing on buying them something they’ll need will make it easier to come up with gift ideas. For example, some dads are notorious for carrying around the same wallet for years on end to the point where it is falling apart. Buying them a new wallet for the holidays is perfect, as it is something they most definitely need but is not something they think to buy. Cheap Wallets for Men is an online company that offers affordable prices for high quality wallets with lots of different design options. For a dad who is usually on the go, a knockoff Yeti or Stanley cup to hold practically any drink is a great gift. However, a nice cup does not always have to be from the most expensive

brand. Marshalls offers some that look just like the more pricey options, and of course Amazon has lots of choices to pick from as well.

For a best friend’s gift, a go to option if one is at a loss for what to get is something matching. Even though matching best friend jewelry seems childish, it can be a really adorable present, especially if both friends love to wear jewelry. It does not have to be a basic design to be affordable, though. Sun and moons, butterflies, infinity signs and crystals are all items Amazon offers in necklace or bracelet form that can be shared with a best friend.

For a friend or family who is specifically interested in certain activities or hobbies, there are a variety of options to purchase. For skin care lovers, getting them skincare kits is a perfect option for something that can definite-

ly be from a more well known brand but for a fraction of the typical cost. Sol De Jeniro offers their “Bum Bum Jet Set,” which comes with their mini 62 perfume, Brazilian Bum Bum Cream and their Brazilian 4 Play shower gel which can be purchased at Ulta Beauty or Sephora. Or, if your friends love to bake, you can get them cake piping bags and nozzles for frosting, baking kits for something they would not normally bake at home or new appliances. For movie lovers, Etsy offers super unique presents like scratch off posters where you can scratch off every movie you’ve seen until you have watched every one on the poster. With this holiday gift guide to be of aid during shopping sprees, there will be no more stress around buying the right presents this holiday season!

Sweat sets are the upcoming fashion trend A new, affordable way to dress comfy this winter

Sweat sets have become the go-to choice for teenagers seeking both comfort and style. These matching color sweatpants and sweatshirts create a low-effort outfit, providing a put-together look without sacrificing coziness. Whether you’re at school or heading out to see family, the sweat set has become a trendy and acceptable fashion staple this winter season to wear either in or out of school.

Choosing matching colors not only creates a visually pleasing look but also allows for versatility. If you have multiple sweat sets, it makes it easy to mix and match pieces, so don’t feel restricted to wear matching colors this winter—opt for outfits of your choice too! The sweat set flexibility allows teens to eliminate the hassle of outfit planning, especially on a cold school morning when you would rather stay in your pajamas!

When it comes to staying warm during these colder months, the fleece material of

many sweat sets additionally provides warmth and comfort, but higher-end options offer even warmer and durable sets that will last for winters to come. Or, for girls aiming for a trendy look, sweat sets from White Fox have become the go-to sets after social media influencers, such as TikTok influencer Darcy Mc-

Quenny, popularized the brand’s sets. These sets, however, often go for $100. On the other hand, boys can turn to Nike for their popular Nike matching athletic sets, which also set you back $100. Another option, regardless of gender, are sweat suits from Abercrombie and Express, with a similar price tag.

Stores like TJ Maxx have

more affordable matching sweat sets for both the women and men, with the sets going anywhere from $30-45. For an even more affordable outfit option, Walmart and Target have matching pieces you can pick out, or even mix and match, that go together for $25.

When shopping in-store for sweat sets, you don’t necessarily have to limit yourself to presold sets. Mixing and matching by choosing two pieces from the same store can achieve the same polished look as a pre-sold. A tip to ensure the colors are matching is to look at the price tag and make sure the color ID or name of the product is the same. This way, you can avoid the hassle of slightly different shades of each part of the set and maintain a sleek appearance effortlessly.

In conclusion, the sweat set is more than just a weekend loungewear staple; it’s a versatile and stylish choice for teenagers. So, the next time you are looking for an outfit that effortlessly shows a sense of style and is comfortable to wear, consider the timeless appeal of a well-chosen sweat set.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” hits theaters

Fans wonder if the film will be Martin Scorsese’s last masterpiece

Highly regarded director Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,’’ debuted Oct. 20 across big screens, starring Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone. The movie received positive feedback from Scorsese fans as his films have been acclaimed to be some of the greatest of all time. As there have been speculations on whether Scoresese’s career is coming to a close, fans wonder if “Killers of the Flower Moon” will be his last hurrah. Looking back on the movie and his film evolution is essential to recognize his admired career in the industry.

Scorsese earned his Masters of Art degree from New York University and further went on to teach undergraduate filmmaking programs. He sprang into the Hollywood scene in 1973 with his movie “Mean Streets,” which established his phenomenal directing skills and was the start to his fame. Scorsese then went on to produce some of what are considered to be the greatest film hits of all time, like “The Departed,” “Goodfellas” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Scorsese became more and more distinguished for his creative film tactics and

soundtracks used that give his films a distinctive and recognizable look. He also became recognized for harsh and violent depictions of American culture. Scorsese has been nominated for nine Oscars for Best Director and has won for his movie “The Departed.” Many have argued Scorsese could be the best living director of all time, as he has continued to produce something new and unique through each of his films. His latest movie,“Killers of the Flower Moon,” has been commended for doing all that as Scorsese has once again went above and beyond with the ideologies of cinema to form a unique and out of the box objective within his films.

“Killers of the Flower Moon’’ was adapted from its book counterpart written by David Grann. Scorsese redesigned the plot to create a different perspective coming from the antagonists of the movie, Ernest Burkhart, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and William Hale, portrayed by Robert De Niro. The movie examines the history of racism and exploitation as it focuses on a Native American tribe called the Osage, who are murdered in order for the antagonists to acquire money the tribe obtains off of the land they live on. While this

movie does fall under the classic Scoresese mob story genre he is well known for, it comparatively is made to be seen through a different environment that he’s never presented before in his films. This new approach has created a plot that fans have raved over.

Across the film community, fans have been talking nonstop about the greatness this movie portrayed. “Killers of the Flower Moon” received a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the highest rated movies of Scorsese to come out. Fans currently have left only positive reviews on the movie. People explain in their reviews how the movie moved them in a way they did not expect. Through the topic and plot, the movie left fans touched and even emotional through the sensitive subject. People also ex-

plained how this movie is just yet another great masterpiece Scorsese has produced. People find it hard to believe how someone is still able to create such raved over films still to this day. Overall, fans can not believe how 80 year old Scorsese still obtians the ability to make such moving films and masterpieces after so many years in the industry.

Although, if fan speculations are correct, the close of Scorsese’s career is soon approaching, it will have ended with an extremely esteemed movie. His ability to bring attention to topics like racism, exploitation and the harsh reality of American life deserves utmost recognition. Overall, Scorsese will continue to be an idol in the film industry for his diverse topics that future directors will continue to look up to.

Cailee Spaeny encaptures viewers in “Priscilla” Sofia Coppola brings light to Priscilla Presley‘s Story

In the 1960s, Elvis Presley’s rise to fame granted him the title of the “King of Rock and Roll,” and in addition to his acclaimed music, Elvis was also known for being a sex symbol and a ladies man. However, despite his fame, few paid attention to his wife, Priscilla Presley, and what her side of their marriage looked like. With the newly released movie “Priscilla,” director Sofia Coppola brings Priscilla’s (played by Cailee Spaeny) story to life and shows how Elvis (played by Jacob Elordi) was not as perfect as the media suggested. The encaptivating and heartfelt movie flawlessly illustrates the downsides of exploitative relationships. “Priscilla” is one of the top movies of the year for its perfect storytelling of how not all relationships on television are perfect.

The movie starts out as fourteen year old Priscilla starts her freshman year of high school in Germany, where her father is stationed. She meets Elvis during a dinner party, they sneak away to talk, and the conversation ends with a goodbye kiss. The two become infatuated with one another, hastily making the decision to live in Graceland together and

have her finish school there the second Elvis came back from war.

However, while their love started out pure, it quickly went downhill. Priscilla was forbidden to get a job because she needed

even left with Elvis throwing a chair at Priscilla’s head, her barely dodging it. Elvis would repeatedly take pills the minute he woke up, and would drink all night and sleep all day. He even gave Pris-

cilla the same pills, leaving her in a coma for two days. As the years went on, the relationship became more and more toxic, despite the glamorous facade the couple publicly portrayed. While many know the story of Elvis and how he became fa-

mous, few know how Priscilla had to deal with his fame. The movie impeccably illustrated Priscilla’s life and how being married to a “king” had some drawbacks. Coppola brought light to Priscilla’s story, and movie challenged the idea of the Preselys’ love story, and suggested that the Presleys had a much more complex relationship than the public knew about. Through Priscilla’s forgiveness and empathy, the film shows viewers why Priscilla stayed with him for all those years; however, after the countless violent argumenments ments and toxicity towards Priscilla, it is clear that his behavior is irredeemable. Spaeny’s emotions on screen captivated viewers to portray how Priscilla was trying to stay with Elvis and brush off the fights, but eventually reached her breaking point.

Overall, the movie had its lighthearted moments that showcased Elvis and Priscilla’s love, but it also had dark arguments that add nuance to their story. The emotional performances and detailed set design leaves viewers wanting more from Priscilla’s story and help show her as a fully formed person, not just a style icon. The movie left viewers with the realization that while Priscilla was Elvis’s, Elvis was not hers—Elvis was the world’s.

“The Hunger Games” sequel released in theatres

“The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” receives positive feedback

Many fans of the previous Hunger Games movies have been awaiting the release of “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” to join the series. Although a book has already been written about this sequel, many have been excited for a movie to come out to involve more realistic live action. As the sequel was released Nov. 17, 2023, the majority of fans have already been able to see it in theaters and it is already sparking a lot of interest.

This movie features two main characters Coriolanus Snow and Lucy Gray Baird. 18-year-old Coriolanus, and other members of the Academy he is in are selected to mentor tributes of the Hunger Games as a new project for the 10th Hunger Games. Coriolanus’ mentor is the female tribute of District 12, Lucy Gray, who makes a bold introduction during her reaping by singing a song that charms the audience. Throughout the games, Lucy Gray is supported by the audience by receiving donations because of her singing ability.

Also, Coriolanus seems to be the only mentor that actually helps his tribute by willing her to win the games, causing the two

to build a budding relationship.

The ending of the movie leaves many viewers confused, however, as Coriolanus turns on Lucy Gray although he seemed to originally be committed to living with her. This diversion is a result of Coriolanus beginning to become paranoid due to many things that happened between the two of them leading up to this scene. Lucy Gray has a common theme throughout the movie that trust is very important to her, and Coriolanus did many things to break their trust, causing the downfall of their relationship. During the movie, he hides the fact that he killed someone and accidentally tells Lucy Gray, causing her to no longer trust him.

Many fans have already voiced their opinion on this sequel as ratings and viewings continue to sky-rocket. Even those who are not familiar with the franchise or overall do not like films have been seen in theatres, praising the film for the action-packed storyline and variety of characters.

“It was an absolutely phenomenal film to see.”

Hunger Games fan Dana Kim said “Even the long runtime was fine. As someone who usually doesn’t enjoy movies, this was incredible.”

The current rating of the

movie is 3.5 out of 5 stars, but many enjoy seeing the advance of President Snow; however, some believe that there is too limited of a time to portray all the events leading up to the character.

“I would have loved to get to know the other tributes a little better and to have seen less of Corionlanus Snow’’ Victoria Matosovic said in a review.

While there are no confirmed sequels for Corionlanus Snow’s character, many fans are left satisfied with the current se-

quel. According to Rotten Tomatoes, there is a 89% audience rating for the film currently, with thousands more praising the film and storyline of Lucy Gray and Coriolanus Snow each day.

“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” is an entertaining and intriguing storyline about Coriolanus Snow. Altogether, the movie is a revision of the past, allowing those to understand how the gamemaker President Snow rose to fame in the previous games.

Drake releases new album “For All the Dogs” His eigth album drops, shocking fans with

Out of a variety of different popular rap artists, Drake is a well renound rapper with a multitude of listeners. He has recently dropped a new album called “For All The Dogs,” This album has 23 songs with varying styles for each song, an interesting choice for Drake. In this album, Drake collaborated with SZA, Bad Bunny, J. Cole and many more artists. Overall, this album shows a different side of Drake. In one of his old albums titled “Her Loss,” he collaborated with multiple rap artists rather than singing with artists of different genres. The majority of his discography does not include duets and he mainly raps by himself. On the other hand, this album has a lot of featured singers that are different to his style. One of the most popular songs on this album is “Virginia Beach,” as it has a variety of different vocals. Many of the songs within this album have a unique beginning, along with a different beat and style of singing. While including different vocals can cause some songs to be chaotic, it particularly works well for most of the album. For Virginia Beach, he had slowly eased into the rapping chorus from the beginning

introduction so it was more put together. Another one of the songs in this album is IDGAF, another representation of how he makes the beginning of the song completely different from the chorus that allows him to transition to rapping. At the beginning of the song, Drake includes a woman singing, making it very interesting and diverse compared to his other songs. One thing that many people agree with is that SZA and Drake in particular are an amazing duo. Both songs on the album that SZA was on flowed together, and their styles of music go together very well. While most of the album is great there are a few exceptions. With “Bahamas Promises,” this song was much too short. There’s random dogs barking in the background of the music. Another one of the songs that is featured in this album is “Calling for You,” featuring 21 Savage. The chorus flows well, until a talking intermission. A girl begins to negatively talk about a trip in the middle of the song without any context whatsoever. Since the song before that intermission is very good, however, it shows that 21 Savage and Drake create good music when they write together. Many speculate that he should try to collaborate with SZA and 21 Savage more

in the future. His collaboration with Bad Bunny and J. Cole, however, was unnecessary. These two collaborations were not as good because of the fact that Drake and these artists are not compatible.

Drake overall excelled with this album. Many positives, like the differing style and many collabs, brought a new sense of who he is as an artist. However, this recieved some

multiple collabs

backlash as well. Some fans are wishing for the “old Drake” back in response to the changing style from his usual albums. For All the Dogs is arguably one the best albums that Drake has made. He has many other good albums from the past, but with the artists that are featured and the progression in music, this made it one of the best albums he has written so far.

Walpole cross country team wins division title Boys cross country team wins division for the third time in a decade

After a strong regular season, the Walpole Boys cross country team capped it off with a win at the Division 2A State Championship on Saturday, Nov. 11. Walpole had to run against all 28 teams in Massachusetts division 2A to get their win. This win marked the third time that the team has achieved this feat in the past decade. Walpole had a score of 71, while second place team, Plymouth South, had 100. Walpole sophomore Luke Zahurak placed fifth overall with a personal best 5000 meter (about 3.1 miles) time of 16:27; senior Sean Kerin was right behind Zahurak, finishing in seventh. Earlier in the season, Kerin was awarded a track scholarship by UMass Lowell, a Division 1 school, and will be running with the team next year. Also winning a top 15 finisher medal was senior Declan Cunningham, with a time of 16:52. Rounding out the top 5 and securing Walpole’s win were junior Cole Bowden and senior Jackson Massey. There was only a 36 second difference between Walpole’s first and fifth man, the lowest spread of any team

in the field. Zahurak and Kerin had been running together all season to give Zahurak an older, more experienced runner to learn from.

“Sean’s really pulled me through,” Zahurak said “Every race, I just need to sit right behind him. I get through all of my races because of Sean…I’m looking forward to the improvements that will come.”

The final two members of Walpole’s varsity squad are both freshmen. Josh Black, the team’s sixth man, was able to push opponents back in the placements with a 17:15 personal record. This time is not only the third best freshman 5k time in Walpole High history, but it also means he would have the fourth best time on any other team

in the division. Walpole’s final runner, Nate O’Neil, also set a personal record with the fifth best freshman time that the team has ever had.

“You have to try your best to get to every next runner, you’ve got to do what coach tells you to do. You always want to run the best you can,” Black said. “Working with the upperclassmen has been absolutely incredible and it’s been very useful, all of them have experience and I look up to them as role models.”

Walpole cross country’s success at the divisional meet meant that they secured an invite to the All State Championship, where they will run against all of the top teams from division two in the state. The team also prepared to begin their indoor track season within these few weeks, as they hope to achieve as much success there as they did this season. With two seasons of Winter and Spring Track left this year, the group hopes to continue their success for events such as nationals.

“I always get really happy. I see how everyone else is happy about how they did. I see how many people that I have passed in that race. I see the other teams too,” Black said. “It’s amazing to see the camaraderie around those groups.”
