his magazine is your space - to share what matters to you and learn more about the staff and other members here at Who Cares? Scotland. This magazine belongs to you.

I'm Kenny Murray, Depute Chief Executive of Who Cares? Scotland, and I am excited to share with you what we have been up to and what we’re looking forward to in 2026.

Whilst there have been financial challenges this year, we still have some amazing events and here are some of my favourite memories!

We launched our Action on Advocacy campaign, calling for every one of you to be able to access independent advocacy no matter where you live, your care background or your age. Our first ever Summer Festival was a great success, where we tried (and failed) to get Oasis to play at! At the start of October, 37 of you met with MSPs at the Scottish Parliament to make your views heard.

More recently, it was Care Experienced Week where we shone a light on the importance of rights being upheld for all Care Experienced people.

Looking onto 2026, it’s a big year for Scotland. With the Scottish Elections coming up in May, we are working hard to make sure that Care Experienced people are prioritised by every political party. We want to see MSPs deliver real change for those who need it most and we’re working behind the scenes to create a lifetime of equality, respect and love for Care Experienced people all across Scotland.

There’s so much happening and it’s all happening because of you and for you.

So, dive in and get involved – this is your magazine and your space.

Chop the chicken, onion and peppers into bite sized chunks.

Be careful to use different knives and surfaces for each ingredient, or thoroughly wash knives and surfaces in between each.

I’m McShane PT, a personal trainer who works with clients from all walks of life, from complete beginners looking to start their fitness journey to experienced athletes chasing new personal bests.

Alongside my work in the gym, I’m also an amateur MMA fighter, which means I live and breathe training, discipline and mental toughness every day.

I know what it takes to stay focused even when motivation fades. My approach to fitness is simple but effective: it’s all about consistency, effort and mindset. There are no shortcuts or quick fixes - just steady, sustainable progress built through smart training and balanced living. Catch up with Carolelynne O

ur National Advocacy Helpline is available to any Care Experienced person, regardless of age or type of care. We also offer advice and guidance to those supporting Care Experienced people.

Every issue, we’re catching up with one of our lifelong advocates about the support they’ve been providing. This issue, we spoke to Carolelynne who has worked for us for eight years!

Care Rec ords and Homelessness Jayne, 56 years old, contacted our helpline looking for support in accessing her care records. She had completed a Subject Access Request (SAR) and was told no files were found.

Carolelynne offered to contact the local authority again on her behalf. During the conversation, Jayne explained she was homeless, living outwith Scotland and that she had been trying to get back home but didn’t know how to begin the process. She struggled with forms and speaking on the phone.

Helping Jayne return to Scotland, Carolelynne contacted Jayne’s local authority Homeless Team which was the same authority that had cared for her when she was in foster care. She was told that as Jayne had been away for several years, they had no local connections with the area and would not be supported by the Homeless Team. Jayne was made redundant from her job and returned to Scotland with nowhere to live sooner than planned, sofa surfing with friends and some nights living on the streets.

She reached out to the Homeless Team again, to be told the same thing. Carolelynne then wrote a letter to the head of the Homeless Team explaining that Jayne If you need support with an issue and are a Care Experienced person living in Scotland, you can contact Carolelynne on the helpline on:

was Care Experienced and was looked after by this local authority when they were younger, suffered trauma within the foster care placement and was now looking to seek an apology and compensation from Redress Scotland. The Homeless Team replied explaining that they could support Jayne and with the information given it was deemed that Jayne was not intentionally homeless and was issued a section 5 for homeless support.

Jayne was offered temporary accommodation for a few weeks within a B&B. However, Carolelynne contacted the Homeless Case Worker to explain that was triggering for Jayne and that she did not feel safe. Within a few days, an offer of a temporary furnished flat was offered.

Most recently, Jayne has been offered a flat within the area where she was raised and where her local connections are. The local authority finally found records relating to her time in care and is awaiting an outcome from Redress.

This support was over a prolonged period of time, but now Jayne is settled and hopeful for the future. For the first time she feels she has a place to call home, feels safe and is now looking for a job.

Best Life We hear from John about his journey with Who Cares? Scotland, advocacy and his exciting job at John Lewis!

How long have you been a member of Who Cares? Scotland and what support have you had?

I've been a member since 2022. I enjoy receiving the birthday card every year and I've worked with an advocate for a couple of years now.

I've now been able to voice my concerns on stuff I never felt comfortable saying. My advocate, Sorcha, helped me say it in a way that I felt comfortable with. I was able to say the things I didn't like about foster care. I was also able to move into my new flat and she helped with this. It was taking Social Work a long time and eventually we ended up writing to my local MSP. I'm now living in my own place, drive my own car and have my new job. Cooking on my own is going well. I'm still learning how to keep on top of the cleaning - but I'll get there!

Basically, living my best life, thriving in places I never knew I could thrive before .

John Lewis has made a commitment to being the employer of choice for Care Experienced people. What’s your thoughts on this and do you feel like they have supported you so far?

John Lewis has been really supportive.

They asked me what level of support I think I’d need. I told them I have a learning disability which might mean I find some of the paperwork tricky, but we found a solution together. They kept in touch and emails have always been a straightforward response. I would highly recommend the programme.

How did you hear about the job opportunity with John Lewis?

I’ve always wanted to work for John Lewis as I knew they did driving jobs and that’s where I wanted to head. I had heard the benefits were good too.

My foster carer mentioned that Who Cares? Scotland and John Lewis had a partnership, so I asked Sorcha and it all kind of started from there!

Tell us about your new role. How did you get started and what does your job involve?

I’m going to be a driver, delivering basically anything that you can buy online from John Lewis. It could be a TV, mattress, washing machine, beds, sofas, anything really! I’ve completed the initial training now and have been formally offered the job. I’ve been out in the van. It’s an interesting experience driving my petrol Clio and then a diesel van, but they said I drive the van well. I’ve been told I have good all-around surveillance and good mirror checks.

What are your hopes and aspirations for the future?

I’m not sure what the future holds. John Lewis is the dream job for me. I would like to see myself getting a permanent place to live, meeting someone and having a family.

Issue of the Day: Lost in Transition

Scotland’s Care Experienced Community and the mental health gap.

W

e’re making space in SpeakOut for members to write about an issue they want to highlight. Next up is Emma who wants Care Experienced people to have a guaranteed right to mental health support, no matter where they live.

Every year, hundreds of young people across Scotland leave the care system and step into adulthood, often alone. For many, this transition is not just daunting but deeply destabilising. Behind the statistics are young lives marked by trauma, loss, and uncertainty - yet, when it comes to mental health support, Scotland’s Care Experienced people are still falling through the cracks.

The numbers paint a stark picture.

Recent research from Who Cares? Scotland highlights that Care Experienced people are four to five times more likely to experience a mental health problem than their peers.

Yet access to consistent, trauma-informed mental health remains patchy at best. Many young people being placed on long waiting lists for counselling or therapy, while others discharged from CAMHS without adequate follow up support.

The transition from care to independence is supposed to be supported through aftercare services and local authority pathway plans. Too often, we see these supports as underfunded or inconsistent across councils.

At the age of 16, 18 or 21, Care Experienced people may suddenly find themselves responsible for rent, bills, and job hunting, all while grappling with unprocessed trauma and emotional distress. For those without strong support networks, the risk of crisis is alarmingly high.

Mental health support for Care Experienced people must go beyond crisis intervention.

What’s needed is long-term, relational care. We need consistent support from professionals who understand the impact of trauma, attachment and loss. Organisations across Scotland are calling for a more compassionate, encompassing approach that ensures every Care Experienced young person has access to the mental health services they deserve.

The Scottish Government’s ‘Promise’ - a national commitment to transform care by 2030, sets out an ambitious vision for change.

It pledges that Care Experienced people will grow up “loved, safe, and respected”. But love and safety require more than words; they demand action. Mental health support must be a guaranteed right rather than a postcode lottery.

Because when the state steps in to pa rent a child, it must also stay long enough to help them heal.

Unheard Voices, Unbroken Spirits: A review CW: suicide

A

n incredibly talented group of young people wrote a musical based on the experiences of the care community across Scotland, and we went to see it!

What was the play about?

The play follows a group of friends with different experiences of the care system all navigating their lives. There are various scenarios, a panel meeting where they feel misunderstood, disruption at school through having different meetings, feeling separated from their brothers and sisters and connections between friends fractured when moving to different placements. Daisy, one of the main characters sings about her loss of hope and optimism for her future, due to the continual struggles with the ‘system’, and she sang it beautifully!!

These scenarios exemplify the characters dislike towards the ‘system’ revealing a world where Care Experienced people feel ‘dehumanised, analysed, labelled and filed’.

Despite the system’s failings, the strength of their friendships between each other is what keeps them going, providing mutual support and understanding they can’t find elsewhere - their chosen family.

The second act begins with the main character Daisy completing suicide. The characters are lost without her, with many of them turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as drinking, anger, and falling out with each other.

Without spoiling the end, their bonds between each other are what keeps them going, and they decide to push for change in Daisy’s honour – calling it Daisy’s Chain. This is a space for Care Experienced people to come together, connect and feel like they can belong.

Why was it so important?

Whilst this play touches on some heavy and sensitive topics, the show is a powerful exploration of grief, connection and resilience in the Care Experienced community.

Everyone should have to watch it. It breaks down all of the experiences that Care Experienced people go through so well and so clearly. And the songs were amazing, complementing the show so well!

Special Mentions

Everyone done AMAZING from the organisers, the behind-the-scenes workers and all of the Care Experienced young people involved. A special mention to Daisy, played by Lauren who’s singing was captivating.

The show is powerful, hard hitting and very much a call to action. If you were lucky enough to see it in November, we hope you liked it as much as we did. And who knows, we would be keen for a sequel, so we’ll keep an eye out for that!

n October, our members were invited to visit the Scottish Parliament, meet with politicians and share their views on what’s most important to them in the Children (Care, Care Experience and Services Planning) (Scotland) bill. Over 35 Care Experienced people came!

Why did we go? MSPs wanted to hear directly from Care Experienced people and the session delivered exactly that - real voices sharing real experiences and opinions on the bill.

Care Experienced Week 2025 Manifesto

Scotland Demands Better

We launched our manifesto for the Holyrood Elections: ‘Connected by Care.’

Why is it called this?

In Scotland, we’re all connected to care in some way, whether through our own experiences, our families or our communities. This manifesto focuses on this and calls for parties to make Scotland a place where every Care Experienced person can thrive.

It has five calls: 1.

Ensure the Promise is kept in full and fully resourced, with processes to track its delivery up to and beyond 2030.

2. Implementing the statutory right to independent, relationship-based, lifelong and accessible advocacy for all Care Experienced people who need it.

3.

Every child in care should be offered mental health support, and Care Experienced people of all ages should be able to access trauma-informed support.

4.

Adopt a whole-school approach to supporting Care Experienced children and young people, such as our ‘Communities that Care’ model.

5. Introduce the Scottish Human Rights Bill which includes Care Experienced people within the Equality duty.

We want to see every political party commit to delivering real change for the Care Experienced community.

We were at the Scotland Demands Better rally, joined by thousands of other marchers, supporters and organisations to demand better - what a great way to kick off the week!

Our Love Rally bloc was calling for better services, better support and a lifetime of equality, respect and love for Care Experienced people across Scotland.

Falkirk Falkirk Council hosted an amazing celebration event with a ‘western’ theme. There were around 80 children and young people and everyone got a goodie bag with a few tasty treats. On offer was a bouncy castle, bucking bronco, line dancing, virtual reality headsets, a photo booth and a scavenger hunt.

Afterwards, they headed to the Kelpies and enjoyed seeing them light up to mark Care Experienced Week.

The Wee Diamonds Every Tuesday, our ‘Wee Diamonds’ and ‘Chill Out’ group meets in Paisley and for Care Experienced Week we threw an amazing Halloween party!

Leith Academy Leith Academy held a weeks’ worth of events around their school to celebrate! They had a big archway rainbow for pupils to leave positive messages about care experience.

We hosted a Q&A where staff who were either Care Experienced,

foster carers or adoptive parents had created a small video about their journey and then invited pupils along to find out more.

There were also other celebrations, cake and waffle making, basketball and volleyball matches.

Saying Goodbye to Kim Campbell Kim has worked at Who Cares? Scotland for over 21 years, fighting for Care Experienced young people and making sure their voices are heard. Here, she shares her thoughts as she says goodbye to head into retirement!

A

fter a lot of procrastinating, I finally made the decision that it was time for me to retire from Who Cares? Scotland, a job I have lived and loved for the past 21 years and 8 months.

I came to Who Cares? Scotland after years of working in the residential care sector with a strong belief that much had to change for our Care Experienced people, and that belief has never wavered. I remember Mary Bateman, Jamie McAnally and I all started on the same day, saying that every time we met!

From day one, I saw in my colleagues a fire and determination to do the best for our children and young people through our roles as advocacy and participation workers. I have laughed and I have cried at the resilience and courage shown by the young people we support.

Every conference and participation event where young people shared their stories humbled me and brought me to tears, and it still does to this day.

I felt huge pride when our young people told their stories to the First Minister and the Scottish Parliament, and how tirelessly they have worked to make changes to a system where they see unfairness and inequality. They have sought to make changes not just for themselves, but for the future young people to follow.

Camp and events where our young people can come together, make memories and just be themselves, form lifelong friendships, showcase their talents and just be children again have been a delight to be a part of. The Love Rally, championing the basic human right to love and be loved, is something we should never have to tell people about, but we did, and we all shouted it loudly and proudly.

I have never stopped loving my role with Who Cares? Scotland, but I feel the time is right to hand over the mantle to somebody younger and with more energy, and hopefully a driver - as it is a nightmare travelling all over the country on public transport!

I have met and worked with some of the most amazing and courageous young people who I have learnt a lot from, who have shown remarkable resilience and courage, and who have embraced advocacy and been empowered by it. That is all we can ask for at the end of the day.

You will always have my unwavering support and love, and I will watch with incredible interest and pride to see the next chapter of Who Cares? Scotland and all our amazing members.

W

e’re making space in SpeakOut for members to share their hobbies and interests. Next up is Chris. He’s been all across the globe and he has lots of advice and wisdom he’s learnt from his travels!

Travelling the world has changed my life. I have been to many different places including India, Sri Lanka, Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mexico, America, Canada and a variety of different places within Europe. This has included the opportunities to visit a many of the seven wonders of the world including the Coliseum, the Taj Mahal, Chichen Itza, the pyramids and Petra.

My favourite memory from visiting all these places is doing a three-day motorbike tour in North Vietnam. I had the opportunity to experience the amazing natural landscape and get up close to the Chinese border. It was honestly the most stunning thing I have ever done.

You learn from visiting all these places that the world is very similar – all human beings are equal and no one should be treated any differently than the next person.

During my time visiting these countries, I also came across extreme poverty within our beautiful world. It is extremely important to try and tackle global poverty and I think visiting countries where poverty is extreme can be a force for good - if you are able to support local vendors with gifts, souvenirs and local restaurants and trying to embed yourself in the local community and culture.

Most of my travels have been done on my own, which has helped build character and resilience in everyday life.

When things go wrong, you are the only one responsible and you learn to fix it yourself.

It is not as expensive as you think to travel. Get on Skyscanner and do it on your own – you can do it!!

Anime Corner I

was definitely late to the anime party when I was growing up. In my younger days, the only times I got to watch any was if someone brought a VHS tape to my carer’s house or if I was at a friend’s place and it happened to be on at the time. It was usually Dragonball Z or Sailor Moon, both of which I have now watched many times.

I would say there are positives and negatives, though, to going back and watching anime I missed from my childhood. On the plus side, shows like YuYu Hakusho, which is now one of my favourites, are amazing and still pace very well. However, shows like Naruto and One Piece, which pace terribly but are both two of the biggest shows in the anime genre, definitely benefited from weekly episodes back when you couldn’t just jump online and binge a whole season in one day.

And that’s the great thing about anime - there are different anime for everyone. Some people like the long haul where it takes years for a story to finish, while others like short 12-episode seasons that finish the show completely. There’s no way to define what is good and what is bad. Someone will always like something you don’t, and I love it. There’s just so much anime out there from so many different genres - to name a few: horror to romance, fantasy to sports. I would honestly say there is something out there for everyone; they just need to find it.

For me, mostly I like a general mix of genres, and Netflix has been updating their catalogue for a long time, which has been amazing for catching up on the old but also watching some of the new.

With Charlie My favourites, of course - and I will limit it to five since there are too many - are:

1 Mob Psycho 100 2 YuYu Hakusho 3 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood 4 Record of Ragnarok 5 Attack on Titan Some anime you like might not be enjoyable for everyone, but that’s the great part about anime, it’s not about everyone else, it’s about you and what you like. Once you find those shows, you’re in a whole new world of fun.

Just to close off, I would recommend trying to do a little research, watch some trailers, see what takes your interest, and if it’s not for you, then that’s alright. But there is always something that will catch your eye.

I’m currently watching Sakamoto Days on Netflix, which was recommended to me, and honestly, it took me by surprise. Now I’m hooked. So give it a go, and maybe you will be surprised too and find a show you like!

Out and About ..... at

We’re making space in SpeakOut for members to write a review about a film, a restaurant or an event. This edition, it is Ross who has visited GlasGLOW’s Miles Better!

I

went to GlasGLOW this year and it was so much fun! It’s in the Botanic Gardens and was all about celebrating Glasgow’s 850th birthday.

Everything was lit up with amazing lights and music, and it felt really magical. The whole walk took about an hour but it went by so quickly because there was so much to see and do.

My favourite part was the rainbow lights. They were so bright and colourful and I loved how they made the trees and paths look like a rainbow. There were also special lights that made my clothes sparkle which looked awesome!

I really liked going through the big colourful slinky tunnel and playing with the bubbles that floated everywhere.

There was even a spooky bit with funny ghosts and skeletons, but it wasn’t too scary.

10 10 I would give GlasGLOW a big 10 out of 10. It was cool, colourful and a bit spooky too.

I can't wait to go again next year.

The best surprise was meeting Rory the Dinosaur. He was very cheeky because earlier that day he had eaten his keeper’s jumper!

Before we left, I got to toast my own marshmallows over a huge fire pit.

Traitors.... the show which is all about being the best liar!

The show sees a group of people trying to work out who among them are secret ‘traitors’ trying to eliminate the ‘faithfuls’.

The recent Celebrity Traitors show has had the whole of the UK on the edge of their seats (because of how bad they are!)

The lineup includes names like Alan Carr, Jonathan Ross and Paloma Faith, with the ‘faithfuls’ being absolutely useless detectives.

They are accusing random people based on vibes and dodgy eye contact, completely missing the actual traitors who are right

under their noses. It’s like watching someone search for their phone while holding it in their hand.

But here’s the thing - it’s brilliant television.

Yes, they’re terrible detectives. Yes, it’s frustrating how bad they are. But watching these celebrities completely fail so badly is very entertaining.

4/5 - Bad gameplay, great TV!!

The internet was recently taken over by Taylor Swift. She’s had quite the year, buying back her music, getting engaged to NFL player Travis Kelce and releasing her new album, The Life of A Showgirl.

The album makes for easy, okay listening, but in an era when female pop artists have possibly never sounded better, it doesn’t hit as hard as expected. With Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX releasing record-breaking albums recently, Swift’s album falls short. Her greatest competition remains her own previous work.

Too many songs blur together, with lyrics feeling cringey and surface-level rather than

clever. Critics have called it the most underwhelming album of the year.

Swift also faces criticism for releasing 34 variants (yes 34!!)

- different covers, coloured vinyl, bonus tracks, and signed inserts. Many call it capitalism on steroids: excessive greed for a mediocre album.

This film is definitely one to remember.

This film tells the true story of John Davidson, who was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome as a teenager in the 1980s. At a time when people barely understood the condition, John faced rejection and struggled to fit in.

It is heartbreaking, funny and most of all eye opening. The story follows John as he meets a woman named Dottie, who helps him accept himself and changes his life.

As an independent film, Scottish (though Dottie’s accent was pretty terrible!), and great cinematography, it’s got a lot a love from the Who Cares? Scotland staff.

The film helps viewers understand what it's actually like to live with Tourette’s

2/5 - A disappointing release that’s hard to recommend, even for the die-hard Swifties!

syndrome, teaching important lessons about kindness and accepting people for who they are.

5/5 - The film of the year, we highly recommend you watch it!

Buddy?

Our friendly mascot Buddy the Bear goes to lots of different places, helping us work to improve the lives of Care Experienced people like you. Check out where he’s been recently.

Buddy's been making the most of the lovely festive season and has gone to do some fun activities around Glasgow. To start, Buddy joined our Empowered Voices Programme for a brilliant bowling session, what a great way to spend time with friends!

After bowling, Buddy decided to embrace the winter mood and headed to the cinema to watch a Christmas film.

There's nothing quite like getting cosy in the cinema when it's cold outside.
