Asking questions helps us understand the world around us. On this page, I’ll do my best to answer your questions! If you are still not sure, you can ask a grown up you trust or someone who works for Who Cares? Scotland to read over this page with you.

Q. What is respite care? Respite care is a service for all families, especia lly foster, adoptive, and kin ship families.

The Directo Jasmin from our National Representative Body* sat down with Denny, our Director of Advocacy, to find out more about him, his work and the future for Who Cares? Scotland.

Can you tell us about yourself?

I’m Denny, believe it or not, I’m 50 years old. I’m married with 2 kids, Connor and Molly. I really enjoy football and American football, so much that I stay up late to watch it.

I have 10 cats “ which is a lot of fun. ”

I like walking in the country, listening to podcasts and spending time with my family. 6

How did you get involved with Who Cares? Scotland?

I used to work in a children’s home and often worked beside Who Cares? Scotland staff. When the job for Who Cares? Scotland came up, almost 16 years ago, I went for it! My first job was to do research about secure units (secure units are a type of children’s home that have extra levels of support and security) and how we could improve them. Since then, I’ve done lots of different things.

*The National Representative Body, is group of Care Experienced people who were voted to be a part of it by our members. They are a mix of boys and girls, of all different ages and different care experiences. It is their job to act on behalf of you and our members at events and when speaking to people in power.

What do you do now? Right now, I’m the Director of Advocacy which means I manage 7 Advocacy and Participation Managers and a Volunteer Manager across Scotland. They provide our advocacy and opportunities for Care Experienced people to come together. At the moment we’re planning our summer programme, this was so popular last year, so we’re hoping to put on some more activities in your local area this year.

What is the Who Cares? Scotland Strategic Plan? Our new strategic plan is very important. It’s like a map that tells our staff what work we will be doing for the next few years. We have been speaking with our members, our staff and other important people so they can help make the plan.

Buddy and The First

Step U

Hey there, Buddy here. In April, I took part in the Glasgow Kiltwalk. The Kiltwalk is an event where loads of people walk together to raise money to help charities like Who Cares? Scotland. Me and my friends did the shortest one there is and walked 3 miles (That’s over 50 football pitches!) in a place called Balloch near Loch Lomond. There were loads of people from all over who were walking to help their charities. 8

Nearly 120 people signed up to walk for Who Cares? Scotland and one of them was someone famous. The First Minister Nicola Sturgeon came along and met some of our members who got to the start line early and she wore one of our special t-shirts. The First Minister is the person in charge and makes the rules in Scotland.

Nicola said that she would keep trying her best to make things better for Care Experienced people all over Scotland. It was a nice sunny day but my fur made me really warm so I went slowly and took a little shortcut so I could cool off. I stayed around at the finish line to celebrate with everyone when they finished their walk. Some amazing people walked over 10 and 20 miles for Care Experienced people! We spent the afternoon in the park in the sunshine and we got loads of amazing photos - I’m in quite a lot of them! Thanks to everyone who walked and their friends who gave them money for walking, we made over £20,000 for Who Cares? Scotland which will be used to help more Care Experienced people like you.

Use scissors and cu t the plastic to fit the to p of your can. You will be pu tting the lid on over this, so make sure it is a close fit and then glue it in plac e.

Once everything has dri ed really well. Put the lid on your kaleidoscope, look throu gh the eye hole and twist the lid around to see magical mo ving shapes!
