Advocate

Morag Cantwell, is an advocate or APW for short, in Clackmannanshire and West Lothian.

Hello!

My name is Morag. I live in Falkirk with my husband, Martin. Both of my children have left home, and I have 2 grandchildren, Adam, and Bethany, who I love.

I like getting out and about, especially near home, where we are lucky to have The Kelpies (two big horse sculptures), The Falkirk Wheel, and Carron Nature Reserve nearby. I love to read, especially crime novels. I love music and will sing and dance along to almost anything, but my passion is musical theatre and I go to see the big shows when they come to Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Before joining Who Cares? Scotland, I worked as a family support worker for 24 years. I joined the WC?S family 4 years ago this month. I don’t look on it as a job, but as being part of a wonderful family. it is the best job I have ever had.

I meet with new children and young people a lot, but some I have known for a wee while now. My job is to make sure they all feel listened to. I will help you understand your rights and make sure they are being met.

Working in two different areas, I know how different the support young people get can be. As an advocate, I can help make things fairer. You should be able to get the same help, no matter where you live in Scotland.

In Clackmannanshire we had a fantastic summer programme, where some of you took part in laser tag, trampolining, going to Edinburgh Zoo and Go Ape. It was great watching you fly across that huge zipline! Even though my heart was in my mouth.

In West Lothian, we now have more advocates, which means there are more of us to help you and we look forward to hearing from you.

Chloe’s Chloe, 16 Everyone loves cakes, and making cakes is what I absolutely love doing, so doing a bake sale was the perfect idea to raise money.

I thought about charities that were really important to me and I chose the Beatson Hospice. They looked after someone in my family, so I wanted to help give them money to buy what they need to help other people.

I had made pancakes loads of times, so I knew I wanted to make them and my staff member helped me pick more things to make. We chose méringue nests, caramel shortbread, scones and empire biscuits.

Then I went out and bought all the ingredients and the decorations for the table, like table clothes, cake boxes and plates, and cups for tea and coffee. I started baking on Thursday night and had everything ready for Friday afternoon.

It went really well. I enjoyed it and everyone who came gave some money, everyone in the house took part and people from outside even came too. Everyone said I did really well with all my baking and decorating.

I was worried that everyone would come at the same time and it would be too busy, but I managed to serve everyone and keep everyone happy.

People were still giving me money a few days later on Monday.

I raised £100 from the bake sale and £80 from the Million Steps Challenge, so in total that’s £180 for the Hospice!

I really enjoyed baking for other people and thought some of you might like to try. Grab a grown up to help and try this fun and easy recipe!

Instructions:

For the Biscuits • 170g Butter at room temperature • 55g Icing Sugar • 170g Self-raising Flour • 55g Custard Powder

1. Ask your grown up to pre-heat your oven to 180°c (160°c for fan assisted ovens or Gas Mark 4) 2. Grease a couple of baking trays with a little butter.

3. In a large bowl cream the butter & icing sugar until light and fluffy.

4. Gradually add the flour & custard powder a little at a time until the mixture forms a paste.

Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes Author: Baking with Granny

Ingredients: For the Filling • 50g Butter at room temperature • 100g Icing Sugar

5. Divide into small balls (about a teaspoon per biscuit) and place onto your pre-greased baking tray with a bit of space between.

Flatten each ball lightly with a fork.

6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the appear dry on top and then ask your grown up to take them out of the oven.

7. Once they have cooled on a wire rack. Mix the butter and icing sugar to form the butter cream and once the biscuits are completely cool, pipe or spread a little butter cream onto half the biscuits and sandwich together with the other halves.

What is a Corporate Parent?

In 2014 the people who make the rules in Scotland - the Scottish government - put some big rules in place to help children and young people, with care experience in Scotland.

The government know that a lot of people help you when you are in care and they wanted to make sure that these people and groups look after you properly. They want to make sure that you grow up feeling loved, safe, and respected.

These big rules also have a big name - The Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014. These rules were made to make sure that the people who look after you know what they need to do to give you the best care they can.

In Scotland there are 26 groups called ‘public bodies’, who have lots of people working for them across the country. You might know some of them already! Your doctor, your teachers, the Social Work department, Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are some examples of your Corporate Parents. It’s the job of these people to help look after you.

The job of a Corporate Parent is to give Care Experienced children and young people the love and support that a family would. The Scottish government tell them the things they need to do to look after you!

Meet your Corporate Parents Scottish Police Authority (SPA)

WHO ARE WE?

Each issue of SpeakOut Junior we’ll introduce you to a different Corporate Parent. This will hopefully help you understand who your Corporate Parents are and what they do.

The SPA’s job is to watch over policing in Scotland and to make sure the Chief Constable (the head of Police Scotland) does what he’s meant to.

The SPA also helps to make the police service better for you and everyone in Scotland.

MEET SAM… Hi,

My name is Sam, and I am the Operational Policing Policy Lead with the Scottish Police Authority.

Since I joined the Scottish Police Authority almost a year ago I have learned a lot about the challenges that people with care experience can face.

I am really proud to be part of a team who are working hard to listen to the needs of people with care experience and find out what we can do to help.

In November the Scottish Police Authority asked some people from Who Cares? Scotland to run a session for all our staff on the job of a Corporate Parent. We really want to make sure that Care Experienced people are involved in making decisions and that they have fair job opportunities.

We also work with Police Scotland who are also trying to make life better for people with care experience. By working together, I believe we can make a huge difference and make life better for our Care Experienced community.

Did you know?

There are lots of Care Experienced people in the movies we watch and the books we read every day!

You may have come across some of these characters without even knowing it. Each issue of SpeakOut Junior I’ll introduce you to some of these characters and the different types of care experience.

I’ll start with the most famous one of all.

Did you know?

That’s right, the boy who lived with the lightning bolt scar was Care Experienced just like you!

With his mum and dad not around to look after him, Harry was living with his Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia meaning that he was in kinship care. Kinship care is when you live with family members who aren’t your mum and dad.

Harry’s friend Neville Longbottom, is also in kinship care. Neville lived with his Gran because, like Harry, his parents weren’t able to look after him.

Harry and Neville had very different experiences and lived with very different people throughout their time in care, but they were both Care Experienced and got through some tough times with support from each other.

For Harry and Neville, being Care Experienced does not mean being any less magical.

Step 1

Take your pencil and using a plate to draw around, trace a semicircle on your green card.

Step 2

Carefully, using your scissors, cut your semi-circle out of your card.

Step 3 Roll your green card semi-circle into a cone shape and glue the edges down.

Step 4 Using your glue stick, glue your decorations to your cone!
