COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS

“If the Shoe Fits…”

HYMN

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Song Leader: Kathleen Vertner, Class of 2025

Piano: Carly Bair ’20

Great is Thy faithfulness, O, God, my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not; Thy compassions they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

Refrain:

Great is Thy faithfulness!

Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed, Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest Sun, moon and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Refrain

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth; Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow; Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Refrain

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER 2025

W. Matthew Silvers is a professor of health sciences at Whitworth University. Silvers received his B.S. from Washington State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Idaho. While on the Palouse, Silvers spent time with both the Cougar and Vandal athletics strength and conditioning programs, served as the head cross country coach for Pullman High School, taught courses for both universities, and directed several running and triathlon events. Since joining the Whitworth faculty in 2010, Silvers has taught a variety of health science courses, including Exercise Physiology and Evidence-Based Health Science. He also oversees the Human Performance Laboratory and serves as advisor to the Human Performance Club. His most treasured time at work is spent mentoring students in research and life. His research interests are focused on unique cross-training strategies for runners, such as aquatic treadmill running, cycle sprint training and kettlebell training. On the side, Silvers serves as event director of the IronMay Challenge and ministry coordinator for his church, as well as operates Chaileo Tea, a family-owned, Spirit-led chai tea business. He enjoys physical activity, being outdoors, building things, pranks and hijinks, and spending time with his family and friends.
