HYMN
Great Is Thy Faithfulness
Song Leader: Scott Miller, D.M.A., Professor of Music & Director of Voice Studies
Piano: Judith Schoepflin, D.M.A., Professor of Music & Director of Keyboard Studies
Great is Thy faithfulness, O, God, my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not; Thy compassions they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.
Refrain:
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed, Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter and springtime and harvest
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
Refrain
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth; Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow; Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Refrain

PRESIDENT’S CUP RECIPIENTS
Emma Foulk , of Seattle, is a mathematics major with minors in computer science and political science. She was a starter for the Whitworth women’s soccer team and was recognized as a second team All-Northwest Conference defender her senior year. One of her favorite experiences while at Whitworth was traveling to Europe for the Math History Jan Term study abroad program. This spring, she finished an internship with King County and a semester-long volunteer experience for the Spokane Community Court. After graduation, she plans to work, perhaps in the computer science industry, and study for the Law School Admission Test before applying to law school.
Sarah Immel, of Yakima, Wash., is a double major in human-computer interaction and English (writing studies track) who is graduating with George Whitworth Honors. As an undergraduate, she sang in the Forest Treble Choir, read fiction as an editorial assistant for Rock & Sling, developed the honors program blog, and served as a grader and teaching assistant for several computer science courses. She also engaged in a variety of offcampus experiences, including local opportunities like teaching computer science to high schoolers, developing a nonprofit website, and participating in a Spokane entrepreneurial event. Memorable experiences farther from home included studying British culture in London, traveling to writing conferences with Rock & Sling, and presenting a paper at an international digital humanities conference. She plans to continue both her creative and theoretical interdisciplinary work through postgraduate studies in writing and digital media.
Meagan Kaloostian, of Walnut Creek, Calif., is an English major (literature studies track) with a minor in editing & publishing. During her undergraduate studies, she loved exploring her interdisciplinary interests and connecting with the Whitworth community through challenging, rewarding courses. Outside of her classes, she participated in Rock & Sling literary journal throughout her four years at Whitworth, serving as the assistant fiction editor during her junior and senior years. She also worked as the editorin-chief of Script, Whitworth’s undergraduate literary journal, during her senior year. Some of her favorite undergraduate experiences include attending the annual AWP Conference with Rock & Sling, participating in the George Whitworth Honors Program, and studying abroad in London during the May Term of her junior year. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in book editing.
Helio Ramollari, of Elbasan, Albania, is an engineering major who was involved in the leadership of the campus community as a resident assistant during his sophomore and junior years (Duvall and Boppell, respectively), and as a success coach during his senior year. One of his favorite academic experiences at Whitworth was the summer research that he did in the Microdevices Lab under the supervision of Assistant Professor Philip Measor. For two summers, he worked on four different photonics projects; he has published a peer-reviewed article as well as two conference proceedings. One of his favorite experiences at Whitworth was the Tall Timber Jan Term program led by Professor Jonathan Moo. The relationships that he formed with his professors and peers brought him to the Christian faith; in particular, the relationships with Associate Professor Josh Leim and his family and with Assistant Professor Kelsey Marcinko. After graduation, he will start his Ph.D. studies in electrical engineering with a focus on photonics and microelectronic devices.
Rebecca Strauch, of Spokane, is a double major in biology and philosophy. During her time at Whitworth, she conducted an undergraduate research project on middle Miocene cetacean fossils from Sharktooth Hill, and she presented her research at the West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference and the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology Annual Meeting. As a member of the Northwest Paleontological Association, she participated in the collection of trilobite fossils from a site in Metaline Falls. Her three-month internship with the Cascadia Research Collective involved the photo identification of dolphin species, as well as participation in Cascadia’s marine mammal stranding response program. During her time in Whitworth’s philosophy department, she co-authored a paper with Professor Nate King on intellectual creativity and the arts. After graduation, she plans to pursue graduate studies in evolutionary biology and paleontology, and she hopes to continue research in cetacean paleobiology.
Genevieve Symons, of Seattle, is a mathematics major with minors in Spanish and computer science. Her time at Whitworth has been defined by meaningful connections with peers, friends, professors and others on campus and in the greater Spokane community. Playing on the Whitworth basketball team; participating in campus ministry events, including serving as a volunteer leader for Awake ministry; and leading middle schoolers in Spokane Valley through Young Life have been highlights of her college experience. She is eager to continue her education in the Whitworth Master in Teaching program as she studies to become a high school math teacher.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
Academic regalia is a tradition dating from the Middle Ages, when long robes and hoods were everyday attire designed to protect against the cold and drafts of medieval university halls. The many variations in academic dress are not incidental, but are rich in meaning. Each costume represents both the degree held by the wearer and the institution that awarded it. Though European universities have been free to adopt any style they choose, a considerable degree of standardization has been achieved in the United States. Following are some of the elements of the code of academic dress.
HOOD: The hood, which is draped down the back, carries more symbolic significance than any other part of the costume. The border, extending over the shoulders to meet in a “V” at the front, indicates by its colors the discipline in which the degree was earned. Colors for some of the faculties are white (arts, letters, humanities); cream (social science); dark blue (philosophy); light blue (education); scarlet (theology); pink (music); golden yellow (natural science); lemon (library science); nugget (business, accounting); and sage green (physical education).
The lining of the hood, partly exposed, is in the colors of the degree-granting institution (for Whitworth, crimson and black). Doctoral hoods are longer than those of master’s degree recipients and have a wider border. Recipients of the bachelor’s degree do not wear hoods.
GOWN: Black gowns are the rule, but a few universities use other colors. A doctor’s gown is recognizable by the three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve, either in black or in the color of the discipline in which the degree was granted. Typically, a doctor’s gown also has velvet panels down the front. The typical gowns for master’s degree and baccalaureate degree candidates do not have decorated panels or sleeves.
CAP: The familiar hard-topped mortarboard, or Oxford cap, has long been standard, but a soft tam is increasingly common. The tassels are usually black or the color of the discipline. The tassel on a doctor’s cap is usually metallic gold.
THE BANNERS
The banners carry the Celtic cross, representing the university’s Scottish Presbyterian heritage, and the seal of Whitworth University. These banners are a permanent part of the commencement exercises.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
As followers of Christ, we are compelled to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. It is our love of God and neighbor that leads us to offer the following statement:
a xest sxľxaľt. Welcome, everyone. We acknowledge that we gather today on the traditional homelands of the four bands of the Spokane Tribe of Indians: Sntut úlix w , Snx w méne , Scqesciłni and Sčewile . Since time immemorial, the Spokane Tribe of Indians has lived prosperously on this land, identifying themselves as “sqélix w,” or “flesh of the land.” We pay our respects to their Elders – past, present and emerging – and we acknowledge their continuing connection with the land, waters and culture. We honor God with gratitude for the land itself and the peoples who have fished, hunted, harvested and gathered here for generations. This acknowledgment recognizes the first custodians of this land, the suffering they endured, and the continued restoration and healing needed. It is important to understand the history that has brought us to reside here, because such understanding fosters a more united community that honors and embraces the first peoples of Spokane. We thank the Spokane Tribe members for sharing their stories, culture and language to develop this welcome. lem lmtš šey u hoy.
THE QUASQUICENTENNIAL PINECONE
Whitworth’s ceremonial icon, to be carried at commencement, convocations and other official university ceremonies, is the Quasquicentennial Pinecone. The icon was commissioned and presented to the university by President Beck A. Taylor to honor the institution’s 125th anniversary, in 2015. It was designed by Professor of Art & Design Katie Creyts and was first used at Spring Convocation 2016. The icon depicts the cone of the ponderosa pine, long a symbol of Whitworth’s beautiful treelined campus.
Crafted of cast bronze and glass, the Quasquicentennial Pinecone reflects a lamp of learning as well as the characteristics of the cone itself. The top of the piece includes a quotation from the original 1890 Whitworth College catalog, and 12 of the cast-glass pinecone scales feature moral and intellectual virtues that reflect the Whitworth community’s highest aspirations for its members. The text for each of the virtues was handwritten by a different member of the Whitworth community, signifying that from many voices and perspectives, we come together as a single body, united in celebration of and dedication to Whitworth’s Christian mission.
LATIN HONORS
Latin honors at Whitworth University are based on the traditional Latin wording: cum laude (with honor), magna cum laude (with high honor), and summa cum laude (with highest honor). The criteria for these honors are based on the grade-point average earned at Whitworth, as follows: cum laude, 3.50 and above; magna cum laude, 3.75 and above; summa cum laude, 3.90 and above. Baccalaureate candidates wear honor cords with their caps and gowns. Bronze cords denote cum laude, silver cords indicate magna cum laude, and gold cords signify summa cum laude
PROVOST’S HONOR ROLL
Membership in the Provost’s Honor Roll is granted to every degree-seeking undergraduate student completing the previous semester with a minimum grade-point average of 3.75 for a minimum courseload of 12 graded semester credits.
PRESIDENT’S CUP
Eligibility for the President’s Cup is based on a 4.0 cumulative GPA for graduating seniors who have completed 126 credits toward the baccalaureate degree at Whitworth University by the end of the Jan Term of their graduating year.
GEORGE WHITWORTH HONORS
Students graduating in the George Whitworth Honors Program have maintained a cumulative 3.75 GPA and have completed 18 credits in the George Whitworth Honors Program in four of the following categories: honors courses/seminars, honors research project, honors internship, honors off-campus study, honors creative project or honors Core.
CLARIFICATIONS
(1) Participation in commencement and inclusion in the commencement program do not guarantee o ffi cial granting of a degree. The registrar’s office verifies completion of all coursework and degree requirements for baccalaureate degree candidates. The graduate offi ce or specific graduate program performs the same function for master’s degree candidates. (2) The official document verifying degree completion is the Whitworth University transcript, signed and sealed by the registrar. (3) Academic honors appearing in this program are based upon credits completed prior to the spring semester. Final honors recognition will appear on transcripts and is based upon Whitworth academic credits.
