7. Payment is a precondition to removal. Payment shall be by cash (in house only), money order, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, certified check or similar bank draft, or PayPal. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Lion and Unicorn or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. Lion and Unicorn reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Lion and Unicorn a handling charge of $25 for any check dishonored by the drawee. The Company will charge interest of one and one half percent (1.5%) per day on any balance remaining five (5) days after the day of sale. Any exceptions must be made upon the Lion and Unicorn, Inc. written approval of credit prior to sale.

A representative of Lion and Unicorn will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot.

12. Florida sales tax will be collected accordingly.

Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties may be exempt from sales tax upon submission of a State of Florida sales tax number prior to the start of the auction.

13. A premium equal to 25% of the final bid price, to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. Any presale bids must be left in writing and approved by Lion and Unicorn via our email at auctions@lionandunicorn.com. The Company’s copy of any such bid shall conclusively be deemed to be the sole evidence of same, and the Company shall not be held responsible for any failure to execute any presale bid. This premium is nonrefundable under any circumstance including in the event of a cancellation or a return of any lots purchased for any reason.

14. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms printed within, posted, and announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid.

15. Lion and Unicorn and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Lion and Unicorn expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Lion and Unicorn relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Lion and Unicorn and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent.

16. These conditions of sale shall be construed in accordance with the laws of the state of Florida.

The buyer/bidder agrees and consents to submit to the personal jurisdiction in the state and federal courts located in the venues of Miami-Dade and Broward County, Florida, United States. The prevailing party to any dispute in court related to or otherwise arising out of this agreement will be entitled to recover reasonable attorney’s fees and court costs both at the trial and appellate level.

Yes Verena Sanderson of Toronto Canada was a very avid button collector and also made buttons in the 1970’s and 80’s. This example of hers was created by placing fauna and other items like a habitat under a very high domed clear glass shield.

A DIVISION ONE PICTORIAL FABLE BUTTON 1 Large size 19th century pictorial button of a rabbit & frog. This charming example of brass and white metal was always a favorite button of my late wife Jane’s who many of you remember. In this auction are several rabbit buttons that she would have loved as she had a wonderful collection of rabbit buttons. This one depicts.  Aesop’s fable of the Tortoise and the Hare or the RFrog and the Rabbit, a 19th century brass with white collet.

1 Large size molded brass dog head button. This is one of those buttons from the Ashlee company of the late 1900’s rather than the later findings assembled together.

One tell tail sign is they are constructed without any sign of solder, The dog is detailed and shows a wonderful expression along with his lop style ears. Great button.

This button came off a card of buttons from the 1940’s of ceramic buttons molded from 19th century brass picture buttons. Not all the buttons are signed but some bear the initials AD or some the name Adams, and one rare button made for the 1946 Just buttons Fair is signed Townsend. I have decided to break the card up to offer them in this and future auctions to the collectors. This is the first of 5 lots in this auction and it is the largest button and depicts a rooster head in relief with a gold border.

A SCARCE DIV. 1 EN GRISAILLE PORCELAIN PICTORIAL BUTTON 1 Large 18th C figural hand decorated porcelain in metal button. This is an incredibly beautiful and fine example of 18th century craftsmanship. The porcelain disk was created in the French style known as En Grisaille, which is a technique painted in layers of gray on a dark background in order to create shading effects. Very finely detailed. Set with a brass rim and tin back typical to the times.

A SMALL CARD OF DIVISION ONE GAY 90 LOOK A LIKES 2 Small/Large early 20th century jeweled “Fooler” buttons. I call these “fooler” buttons because they were designed to fool the eye. They appear to be a Gay 90 style jeweled glass in metal button when in fact it is a celluloid push up. The setting is like many large jeweled buttons of the time but the center in lime green is actually early celluloid. Here is a mother daughter pair of them.

It shows a Paw in the center with the words around “Harlou Mes Beaux” which is in part “My Beautiful” and “Derrn” at the bottom which is Last. The button is a heavy brass high relief example and represents a French sporting or Hunt Club. The button is also backmarked and by the design and quality is most likely late 1800’s. Very cool.

A DIVISION ONE POLITICAL CANDIDATE BRASS BUTTON 1 Medium size brass button of Zachary Taylor. Here is a great political brass button from the 1800’s depicting the man who’s Campaign slogan was :Rough and Ready”. Zachary Taylor was the 12th President of the United States and was one of the top 3 men in our history to hold the office for the shortest time as he reigned from March 9th 1949 to only July 8th 1950 when he died in office. Very cool historical button.

4 CARDS OF VERBAL PIN BACK BUTTONS 64 S/M/L /EX L. pinback buttons including political. Here is a lot filled with verbal advertising, slogans and political pin backs.

In the campaign buttons these pinbacks did not come into existence until the 1890’s, where before that political buttons were actual clothing type buttons with a shank on them.

A CARD OF POLITICAL PINBACK BUTTONS 53 S/M/L Campaign buttons including Kennedy, Nixon and more. Pin Back buttons came into existence in the 1890’s when prior to that the campaign buttons were actual buttons. These pinbacks are often sought after by many political collectors. This lot is no exception as it has some wonderful examples and also includes a nice condition pinback Tintype as well.

A RARE DIVISION ONE BACKMARKED POLITICAL BUTTON 1 Medium size 19th century “Goodyear” rubber pictorial button. This political example from the Seymour/Blair campaign shows the heads of the two candidates. The campaign they ran lost to Ulysses S, Grant and Colfax in the 1868 Presidential campaign. This is quite a RARE button to find and it is in fine condition and completely backmarked, A great example for ANY collection.

This button in the shape of the Plymouth Chrysler emblem is a beautiful and rare example of 19th century paste buttons. Not only are the pastes quite brilliant, the size is incredibly impressive, it is pierced, has interspersed cobalt blue pastes or jewels and is set with a faceted black glass center, and oh, I forgot its only 1 shank. WOW, that’s an impressive button.

A DIVISION ONE PICTORIAL GLASS IN METAL BUTTON 1 Large medium molded glass Art Nouveau designed glass in metal. This incredible button is so striking in this more unusual color of dark teal. The flowing Art Nouveau floral design along with the three dimensional effect is all set in a drum style brass rimmed setting and tin back. Absolutely gorgeous.

A DIVISION ONE HAND PAINTING UNDER GLASS BUTTON 1 Large Medium 19th century reverse painting on glass in metal. This button has a crisp detailed hand painted scene in reverse painting with pearl behind the windows to act as light shimmer.

These type buttons are known as Grand Tour pieces. The gran Tour of Europe was a popular thing to do from the 17th century to the early 19th century when Europeans would travel throughout various parts of Europe with Italy as a central part of the tour. Not only were buttons like this created for the Grand Tour but all kinds of items as souvenirs were created for the traveler.

This example is a beautiful one with an ornate setting and is backmarked.

Here we have a foil imbedded example, a Cut overlay faceted example and a millefiorie cane example.

Smugglers buttons like this one do not come up often. This example is set with several garnet stones and baroque pearls and is very heavy. The center part unscrews from the shank to reveal a secret smuggling compartment. I have always been told by engineers do not unscrew these because the fineness of the screw if it gets stripped you will never be able to rethread the screw and that would be a shame. The posts of the screw are delicate.

The top medium example has a waffle pattern impressed design with colorful flowers and is attributed to Mennecy. Both examples have self hump style shanks.

ONE OF THE TOP 6 RARITIES IN THE AUCTION 1 Large 18th century colorful under glass hand painted button. This is an extremely rare example of 18th century hand painting under glass on natural material is extremely fine. The glass is faceted to the border, the colors are extremely striking. Notice the white bird which is wrapped with ribbon and roses The ribbon has a verbal on it “L’Amitie”, which translates from French to English as “Friendship”. I am told this is a wedding commemorative button from the times. You don’t want to pass up this incredible button up. I have never seen another example like it.

This is a very unusual example of 18th century steel work in buttons, The purple enamel is surrounded by a copper chain like design and the center is a copper pinshank, all set on steel. A DIVISION THREE REALISTIC SHAPED JAPANESE ARITA BUTTON 1 Medium 20th century Arita Porcelain button of a Pansy. This colorful and beautiful realistically shaped Pansy was produced in the 1950’s in Arita Japan and therefore bear the name to collectors of Arita Buttons. I find this a stunning example. The metal shanks found on these examples were used for a short time before learning to self shank them They also used ,teal shanks in the 1990’s for the double shanked examples.

A SMALL CARD OF DIVISION ONE SIGNED WEDGWOOD BUTTONS 2 Small and Medium size backmarked Wedgwood pottery buttons. These two examples show back marks of the name Wedgwood, the blue example is faint but can be seen in the images attached. The Black Basalt example shows “England” and “Wedgwood” which tells us it is pre 1891 as it was required after 1891 to state the words “Made in England”. The beautiful blue Jasperware example is rimmed and bar shanked in silver and both are in fine condition.

These buttons came off a card of buttons from the 1940’s of ceramic buttons molded from 19th century brass picture buttons. Not all the buttons are signed but some bear the initials AD or some the name Adams, and one rare button made for the 1946 Just buttons Fair and is signed Townsend. I have decided to break the card up to offer them in this and future auctions to the collectors. This is the fourth of 5 lots in this auction.

A DIVISION ONE ENAMEL AND GEMSTONE SET BUTTON 1 Medium size 17th century Smugglers type button. Although not a smugglers it is reminiscent of the same style used on the smugglers buttons. This example of gilded silver is enhanced with sections of white enamel and set with interspersed baroque pearls, Emeralds Cabochons and centered with a Garnet stone. A true mark of craftsmanship in fine condition.

A DIVISION ONE EXQUISTE PIERCED STEEL BUTTON 1 Large 18th century steel by Matthew Boulton. This is one of those very finely detailed and excellent condition examples by the master steel maker of the 18th century. Matthew Boulton’s steel buttons were and are considered the finest quality examples you will ever encounter. This pierced example is finely done.

This rare Burwood came to us from a collection of a collector who was well versed in Burwood buttons and this button was on that collectors award winning tray at an NBS convention. Fabulous button and in very nice condition. I believe if I recall correctly it was only the Burwood company that painted many of their examples, while the Syroco company did not. The cobalt jewels and clear pastes are brilliant and fine. The silver setting is engraved with a pattern and the pierced setting sets the jewels off. Notice that the blue jewels create a star pattern of the button.

AN UNUSUAL DIVISION ONE FOIL BUTTERFLY BUTTON 1 Small size incredibly beautiful button of a butterfly. The consignor of this button was certainly quite fortunate to find 4 of these buttons, and that’s why one is here in the auction because if they had only gotten one, well needless to say it would not be available in this auction. It is a beautiful foil enamel set into a brass base with a rope twist border. And, don’t let the size scare you away, not only myself but others I spoke to have never seen this button before so size isn’t an issue.

Tin Dang has explained the story of this button as the Phoenix and the Black Tortoise (turtle). Notice the Dragon on this button has the head of a turtle.
