IMPACT REPORT 2024/25

During my 15 years as a teacher at Whitgift, it has been my pleasure to get to know hundreds, if not thousands of Whitgiftians. It is the energy, skill, intellect and humanity of our students which make being part of this community so rewarding for those of us who live it day to day. The part of Whitgift which is most special to me is the way in which these young men support each other and develop lifelong friendships which are not in any way limited to those from a similar background to them. The fact that these friendships can break through the barriers which society puts up for them is a testament to the power of the bursary programme at Whitgift.
Thank you to those who have donated to Whitgift For All, which not only helps to ensure this special part of Whitgift will remain for generations to come, but will transform the lives of those individuals being supported through the School on a bursary award. You are helping to ensure that Whitgift is a place in which socio-economic diversity is celebrated, and where academically able boys get the start in life they deserve, irrespective of their family income.
We continue to need your support to enhance the bursary provision provided by Whitgift For All. We understand that times are challenging for many financially, with families feeling the strain of VAT on school fees and organisations such as Whitgift adjusting to other financial pressures. It is in these uncertain times that the generosity of those who can donate is most appreciated. Your donation, no matter the amount, helps us to provide an exceptional education for someone who simply wouldn’t become a Whitgiftian without your support.
We would like to thank all of our donors, past and present, who have played a part in giving this opportunity of education. Between us, we are making a transformational impact on the lives of students from every background. Please look out for our next Giving Day and Telephone Campaign in 2026. These fundraising events are crucial for the Whitgift For All bursary fund and your support is much appreciated.
With gratitude,
Andy Marlow

The highlight of this year’s fundraising campaign was Giving Day on the 25 and 26 June. We were so overwhelmed and delighted to raise £171,423 from 463 donors, blowing our targets out of the water!
Giving Day is about promoting the mission of Whitgift For All, raising funds, increasing donors, and engaging the whole school community. The 36-hour campaign reinforced what a special community Whitgift is. Old Whitgiftians, current parents, past parents and staff showed tremendous support for the bursary campaign demonstrating their belief in giving talented boys the opportunity to thrive and the importance of retaining a diverse student body for the benefit of all.
Our current students also supported the Giving Day campaign through giving their time to fulfil a personal ‘1596 Challenge’ – a reference to the year Whitgift was founded. Their efforts helped raise awareness of the bursary campaign and reinforced the importance of giving back.
Example quotes from the Giving Day Donor Wall
“Honoured to stand behind and proud to be part of this remarkable school and visionary programme that ignites purpose, nurtures character, and empowers boys to become the very best version of themselves.”
Pradeesh Sriskandarajah
“We are so proud to support this important fundraising drive to help ensure that students, regardless of their financial background, family and/or personal challenges, have access to the opportunities & education they deserve. Well done Whitgift & thank you to everyone supporting WG Giving 2025!”

“As a parent, I’m deeply grateful to Whitgift and Gift Aid for widening access through bursaries. It means brilliant boys from all backgrounds can flourish here. Thank you for backing potential, not privilege. It truly matters.”
Benedict Selvaratnam
“An important initiative - from a former pupil who benefited from a full bursary grew up on a council estate in Croydon local to Whitgift, who would have never had the opportunities and experiences that an education that Whitgift afforded.”

“I chose to support the Giving Day because as a past pupil, Whitgift was an amazing, life changing experience for me. I would like other children to be able to have the same opportunities and experiences both in education, sport and extra curricular activities that I had.”
Roshan De Silva
“I am very lucky to have had so many opportunities at Whitgift during the 30 years I’ve been part of the school. The bursary fund enables students from all sectors of our community to experience the amazing, diverse offering we have here. It makes me proud to call myself an Old Whitgiftian!”
Andrew Seal
We were delighted to welcome OWs and parents to a host of events over the year to connect with our community and fundraise for Whitgift For All.

Whitgift changed everything for me from my attitude, to my academic and sporting ability. The school instils something quite special in boys and that is something I will carry forever.
Simon Hughes, OW 1998-2006

The bursary scheme changed my life. I was from a single parent family; my father having passed away when I was 3 years old. Consequently, we were not a well-off household, and my mother could not conceivably have afforded to pay for my education, certainly I could not have attended a school like Whitgift.
I was privileged to attend Whitgift for 8 years during the 1980’s – it is a quite remarkable school, and my time there fundamentally changed me. The experience of world class teaching, outstanding sporting facilities and a rounded curriculum together with the camaraderie that comes from growing up with a group of impressive and highly likeable peers gave me a platform for success in life, an inner confidence and determination, and a belief that anything can be achieved through tenacity and hard work. None of this would have been possible without the bursary scheme which supported me through my time at the school.
Gregory Gaffney, OW 1981-1989

My name is Thomas, I am Upper Sixth Form student studying Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at Whitgift and I have benefitted from a bursary since 2019.
As someone with two siblings who did not get the same benefit to go to a school like Whitgift, I am deeply aware of how much I have gained from the opportunities here. I remember playing my first ever game of rugby wearing shinpads (due to misunderstanding what the sport involved) but I have gone on to play for the U16As and the 2nd XV teams, as well as taking up basketball and water polo. I have also played the viola at Fairfield Halls and having started from scratch; I am proud to be taking my Grade 5 this summer. On the academic side Whitgift has introduced me to many new opportunities including the Mycetoma Project in which I take part in undergraduate level practical chemistry and the Crest Award which allowed me to research and design my own experiments. Through doing all of these things, I have found my teachers fully invested in my improvement as a pupil and as a person.
Because of this, in my final two years at Whitgift I am attempting to give back as much as I possibly can to the school and the community. I have become a prefect and volunteer weekly with my Whitgift friends at St. Giles - a local school. The bursary program has been life defining for me. I have developed drastically due to my amazing experiences here and I am so grateful for the opportunity.
Thomas, Upper Sixth Form

Back in 2018, many of my friends were lined up to go to the local secondary school, which whilst being reputable, offered limited opportunities. An independent school was of course never even mentioned, not due of my academic ability but because it would have been an impossible financial burden. However, I did very well in the entrance exam and amazingly I was awarded a bursary place. A door that was once sealed shut, was opened.
I have had the most incredible experience at Whitgift; the professional sports facilities, the outstanding quality of teaching that I am blown away by year after year, and the vast range of clubs and societies that are unique to Whitgift. The school environment pushes for students to be independent whilst also keeping them on track, and I feel I have thrived in this community. Having access to the extraordinary activities Whitgift has to offer is something I do not take for granted.
My bursary award has changed my life. I am incredibly grateful, and I really do hope that in the future, I am able to give back to Whitgift For All so I can help others benefit from the strong foundations I have been given.
The Whitgift Community Summer School gives local primary school pupils a week of stimulating and inspiring academic lessons delivered by Whitgift teachers and an opportunity to try a range of co-curricular activities. The children are selected by their headteachers as being particularly deserving of the opportunity. Seeing the pupils’ confidence and skills blossom over the week, reaffirms the importance of this initiative and Whitgift’s commitment to giving back to our local community.

The Community Summer School 2025 was funded thanks to the generosity of an individual donor and the Whitgift School Parents Association.
THE IMPACT:
This year we developed a survey to measure the impact of the Community Summer School with questions focusing on three key areas: learning, confidence in trying new things, confident in working with others/new people.
The survey results show:
• There was a strong increase in confidence when it came to meeting and collaborating with new people.
• Students enjoyed the Summer School significantly more than they expected to.
• Students’ confidence in trying new things improved notably.
• There was a strong increase in confidence when it came to meeting and collaborating with new people.

We are hugely grateful to all our donors who have financially supported Whitgift For All. The following roll of donors includes those who have generously given between 1st January 2024 and 31st August 2025. We have also included all known members of the Founders Circle who have informed us of their kind decision to remember Whitgift For All in their will. Every effort has been made to ensure the roll of donors is complete and accurate. If your name has been mistakenly omitted, we hope you will accept our apologies and let us know at alumni@whitgift.co.uk.
We would also like to thank our anonymous donors and all our supporters who have helped Whitgift in other meaningful ways – buy sharing your time, expertise and advocacy for our work. Specifically, we would like to express gratitude to our Whitgift For All trustees, Whitgift Association Trust (WAT) and Whitgift School Parents Association (WSPA).
To everyone who has given, pledged or is planning to give, we thank you very much indeed.
