“My paintings are studies of water - meditations on how it moves, how it might feel or sound. Using traditional methods of oil painting I aim to evoke the essence of moving water, from crashing waves to placid ripples. The work is informed by spending time in and on the water as often as possible. This provides a rich source of inspiration, as well as a deep appreciation for how important it is to protect and preserve our environment. My Constantine studio sits right next to a stream that feeds into the Helford River, a constant reminder of its proximity. I am often out in my Canadian canoe, gathering ideas and reference material for my painting. I am interested in what happens in the translation from what I initially observe and record, to the image produced through the medium of paint. By focussing only on fairly small areas of bodies of water, and containing them within the boundaries of a canvas, I hope to suggest the limitless, infinite and fractal nature of my subject”. Nell Kerr spent much of her childhood in rural Wales, but also lived in many coastal places due to her father’s job at sea. After completing her Art Foundation studies at Plymouth College of Art and Design, she went on to do a BA in Fine Art at Coventry University School of Art, specialising in painting. She moved to Cornwall in 2004. Nell’s work has been exhibited across the UK and is held in private collections in the UK and abroad.
