An Abbey-solutely Tee-rific Way To Help Support Dogs

Golfers got to meet their club’s labrador-able namesake after raising thousands of pounds for the training of specialist assistance dogs.

Abbeydale Golf Club raised more than £20,000 after hosting a number of fundraising events for Sheffield-based national charity, Support Dogs, which trains and provides assistance dogs to support autistic children, as well as adults affected by epilepsy or physical disability.

The events included a hog roast, golf competition, raffle, auctions, social evenings featuring gin-tasting and a big “Am-Am” amateur-amateur tournament with 25 teams.

The club, which was founded in 1895 and has 550 members in the men’s section, 110 women and 60 child golfers, was rewarded for its epic fundraising efforts by having a trainee support dog – yellow Lab Abbey –named in its honour.

Andy Daykin, 2023-2024 men’s captain, Nikki Bishop, 2023-2024 ladies’ captain and Steve Silverwood from club sponsors ECA Business Energy met the pup and also had an exclusive tour of Support Dogs’ new headquarters at Elsworth House, on Herries Road South in Hillsborough.

Andy said: “Abbeydale is a thriving and progressive golf club. Nikki and I are both delighted that we were able to raise sufficient funds during our Captaincy to sponsor a support dog, with much of the thanks going to the help of our members. We were delighted to meet Abbey and will follow her progress as an assistance dog with interest.”

He added: “We are really impressed with Support Dogs’ new centre – it’s going to be amazing. Support Dogs is one of the charities that is under-supported and we are delighted to have been able to help. If other golf clubs followed suit, it would really help the charity to thrive.”

Nikki said: “We were thrilled to meet Abbey – she’s beautiful. The new centre is going to be absolutely breath-taking. It’s only been since our captaincy that I’ve come to discover more about what this fantastic charity does to help people affected by autism, epilepsy and disability.

“The new centre opens up such potential to expand.”

Steve said: “ECA Business Energy were proud to be sponsors of Abbeydale Golf Club’s Captain’s Charity Day, helping to raise an incredible £20,000 in support of Support Dogs.

“This fantastic charity provides life-changing assistance dogs for people with autism, epilepsy, and physical disabilities, and we’re delighted to have played a part in supporting their vital work."

Tess Thompson, community fundraising manager at Support Dogs, thanked Abbeydale Golf Club members for their generosity.

She said: “We can’t thank the golfers enough for their efforts and we are delighted that Abbey serves as a testament to their hard work.

“Our charity receives no government funding and the support of golf clubs like Abbeydale is crucial to our success in helping vulnerable people to live more independently. We would welcome any other golf clubs to get in touch.”

Southern Guards & Oscar Jacobson Ready for Record Breaking Week

As LIV Golf teams tee off in South Africa for the first time, home team Southern Guards and their official apparel partner Oscar Jacobson are ready for a record breaking week.

With over 100,000 tickets sold in advance of the first day, LIV Golf South Africa at The Club at Steyn City is vying with LIV Golf Adelaide for the best attended LIV Golf event on record. Once everyone gets through the gates, they’re going to see what this event is really about. The bigger picture for me is that we enjoy this week and show everyone our beautiful country. That’s our main goal.”

Support for the team extends to their apparel partner Oscar Jacobson. With team apparel available to purchase both online and on the course at the event, demand for Southern Guards merchandise is hitting record levels as well.

The South African fans are thrilled to support their team on home soil, but they are also driving sales across our entire range online. This could well be our best ever week across both team merchandise and the wider range.”

The team, made up of Major winners Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, along with Dean Burmester and Branden Grace, take to the course in the Herald polo in Navy for the first round. Young Cheshire Family Turn Empty Field Into England’s No.1 Golf Facility In Just Six Years

NANTWICH, CHESHIRE - What was once an empty agricultural field on the edge of Nantwich has become the number one golf facility in England.

Need Golf, founded by husband-and-wife entrepreneurs James and Sophie Need, has been crowned England’s No.1 Golf Facility for 2026 at the prestigious England Golf Awards. The highest national recognition a golf venue can receive.

The award recognises the centre’s outstanding commitment to inclusivity, community impact and redefining what a modern golf venue can be. But just six years ago, none of it existed.

Where today golfers fill the bays and thousands of golf balls are struck every day, there was once nothing but open farmland and a bold vision from two young founders determined to change the way golf is experienced. James and Sophie believed the sport needed to evolve.

Traditional barriers such as formality, exclusivity and accessibility were preventing new people from discovering the game. Their idea was simple: create a place where anyone could turn up, pick up a club and enjoy golf without intimidation or barriers.

No membership required. No dress codes.

No pre-booking. Just turn up and play.

From the moment visitors walk through the door, the difference is clear. The atmosphere is vibrant, welcoming and built around bringing people together.

Open seven days a week, the centre allows golfers and beginners alike to practise on a technologypowered driving range, play interactive games using ball-tracking technology, or simply spend time with friends and family while enjoying food and drinks delivered directly to their bay. Reflecting a new era of golf that blends sport, technology and social experiences.

Across the UK, golf is evolving beyond traditional club environments, with modern venues attracting a new generation of players looking for a more relaxed and inclusive experience.

Need Golf has become one of the clearest examples of that transformation, helping reshape perceptions of the sport and showing how golf can become more welcoming, inclusive and accessible for a new generation.

Alongside the physical venue, the business has also built a global online audience of more than 250,000 followers, while James Need’s coaching platform has grown into a successful international golf academy.

Golfers now travel from across the UK and all over the world to visit the Cheshire venue. Despite its growing national and international reputation, the heart of Need Golf remains firmly rooted in the local community.

Family events, junior programmes and inclusive initiatives ensure the venue continues to welcome everyone, including beginners, families and businesses.

England Golf described Need Golf as “a movement reshaping perceptions of the sport”, recognising the team’s passion and commitment to making golf more accessible.

Co-founder James Need said:

"From the beginning we wanted to create somewhere people genuinely enjoy spending timewhether they’re serious golfers or simply coming with friends and family. To see something that started as an empty field become England’s number one golf facility is incredibly special."

Co-founder Sophie Need added:

"When we started six years ago the field didn’t even have water or electricity- it was just a dream. Now we’ve built something that brings people together and we’re incredibly proud that a small Cheshire village is home to England’s number one golf facility.”

In just six years, Need Golf has become proof that golf’s future can look very different from its past. And right now, that future is being built in Cheshire Before VS After

Today the family still runs the centre day-to-day, often arriving at sunrise with their young children helping to collect tens of thousands of golf balls each morning before the first golfers arrive.

He also played a major role in the re-designs of Muirfield, Hoylake, Royal Liverpool and Royal Portrush.

The clubhouse at Canterbury Golf Club

Though first laid out as a downland course, the gradual introduction of oaks and silver birches along the fairways have altered the nature of the layout that now has more of a parkland feel, though a little gorse and broom can be found on some holes. Set on undulating terrain, the par71, 6,272-yard layout provides a challenging round of golf with its mix of open par 5s, tight par 4s and challenging par 3s.

Ambitious Coaching Programme Launched

At Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club

Thriving Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club has launched an ambitious coaching programme which aims to help players of all ages and abilities.

It is being led by new full-time Head Teaching Professional Ellie Broome, who has just returned to her home-town club for a second spell.

“From the beginner to established single-figure players we are striving to create the perfect golfing environment,” said the club’s Head Professional Andy Duncan.

The coaching will take place as part of Ellie’s EJB Golf Academy. “I am delighted to be back at my home club,” said Ellie, 27, who lives at Kirkby Lonsdale. “I am relishing the role and looking forward to helping existing golfers and those who want to try their hand at the game.”

As part of the project the club’s coaching studio in the pro shop has been fully renovated and now includes Trackman, a sophisticated system which allows golfers to play a range of virtual holes from courses across the country and gain specific data about their shots, including their trajectory and flight path and club data, such as angles and spin rates.

“It can make a huge difference to improve a player’s technique and performance, whatever their level of ability,” said Andy.

The club is creating a series of coaching pathway steps, from an initial introduction to golf, through coaching groups and ‘buddy programmes’ all the way through to when players are ready for the 18hole course.

“We want to make sure everyone is enjoying the process and is comfortable on the course and with golf club life,” said Andy. “It is all about growing the game and getting more people playing.”

As part of the pathway Ellie is relaunching a junior academy for four to 18-year-olds of all abilities, which will include weekly group sessions, individual sessions and holiday camps.

“There will be more advanced sessions for more experienced juniors – we want to ensure there is something for everyone,” said Ellie.

She is also launching beginner golf sessions for all ages, including family sessions for mums, dads, children and grandparents who want to have a go at the popular sport.

Ellie will also provide individual coaching sessions for experienced current members and non-members who are striving to reach a higher game level.

“For the past couple of years I have coached the Cumbria County Ladies Junior Girls Squad, a development squad which includes girls from across the county, and I shall continue that here at Kirkby Lonsdale,” said Ellie.

In addition, Ellie will provide coaching for ladies and seniors, including group and individual sessions.

“The great thing is that Ellie will be around the club full-time and available to talk to anyone about coaching, development and performance,” said Andy. “With all these initiatives she will be supported by the other professionals and club members.

“Golf is a game where it is always possible to improve – people often refer to it as a lifetime’s study, where you are always striving to be a better player.

“We are a friendly club with a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and this academy will only add to that.”

Ellie first started playing golf aged six, after watching her father and grandfather play. She joined the club at the age of 11 and got her first handicap two years later. “I played and practised and within a couple of years I was down to scratch,” said Ellie.

At 16, Ellie was both the club’s first female Junior Captain and the youngest-ever winner of the Ladies Club Championship. She currently holds the ladies course record at the club with a round of 67 – six under par – having broken the record four times in a single month.

After playing junior golf at international level and representing Cumbria with distinction at both junior and senior level and captaining the Cumbria Junior Team in 2016, she turned pro in 2018 and became a fully-qualified PGA Professional in 2022.

She left the club in April 2022 and spent three and a half years as a full-time coach at another golfing venue before returning to Kirkby Lonsdale this month.

Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club was established in 1906 and has been at its present site since 1991. The 18hole course measures 6,594 yards and is laid out in more than 160 acres of spectacular countryside. The layout provides two nine-hole loops out and back to the clubhouse.

Each of the holes has its own unique character and has four tee options, providing different degrees of difficulty. The River Lune and Barbon Beck both run through the course, which offers amazing views of Barbon Fell and the Howgills.

Other facilities include a swing room with launch monitor; a short game chipping area and six-hole par three course; a pro shop selling equipment and clothing; and ten driving range bays, four of which are covered.

Moreover, since the inception of the SWPL, international bookings to the south west of England have increased just over 300% year on year, with overseas bookings now accounting for over 10% of the visitors.

“St Enodoc has been delighted to welcome so many golfers to our club this year”, comments George Tunbridge, general manager at St Enodoc Golf Club. “This region has so much to offer in addition its fantastic golf courses; excellent seafood restaurants, a rising number of well-appointed hotels, great scenery, quaint villages and golden beaches to name just a handful of the attractions of Cornwall.

“Testament to the quality of our course, there has always been interest from the international market but thanks to all the promotional work that Golf South West has carried out, we are now seeing more and more golfers from overseas enjoying the St Enodoc experience and then spreading the word about what fabulous destinations Cornwall and the south west are for golf.”

As the jewel in the crown of golf tours to this part of the country, St Enodoc is included in around 85% of all Cornish tours booked, demonstrating what a huge pull the James Braid-designed layout is for the region thanks to its excellent position in a range of golf course rankings and its well-earned reputation in the world of golf.

Whilst the majority of these international visitors are American, golfers from Australia and Denmark feature highly, something that has been achieved by Golf South West by hosting a number of international tour operators from these countries.

“Riding on the successful familiarisation trips we have organised recently, we hope to bring over another eight operators next year in May and we have organised two content production visits, one from Chicago that took place in early October and the next one which will happen in April 2026,” comments Sam Bray, managing director of Golf South West.

Domestically Golf South West has also been working on producing a whole range of content, not only on the Church Course at St Enodoc but on a number of other courses with content partner, Huxley.

The operator has also partnered with a large and growing brand in the golf space, MANORS Golf, which recently completed filming at both St Enodoc and Perranporth Golf Clubs.

“Since rebranding the collective of West Country championship links courses as Southwest Premier Links, we have seen a marked rise in interest from international partners keen to send clients to the region.

“With top quality courses such as St Enodoc, Royal Porthcawl, and Saunton East now recognised within the World Top 100, Burnham & Berrow now a Final Open Qualifying venue, Royal North Devon celebrated as the oldest course in England and the ‘St Andrews of the South’, and Perranporth quickly climbing the rankings, the calibre of golf here can compete with anywhere globally.

“The challenge has simply been making these courses, along with hotels and transport, more accessible to overseas operators. This has been achieved by working collaboratively with the clubs, leading regional hotels such as Cadbury House, The Headland, and the Brend Hotel Group, as well as industry partners like Golf Tourism England, and in just 12 months, we have significantly raised both the profile and accessibility of the region. As a result, an international network of outbound operators is now actively promoting the south west as a genuine alternative to the more established UK golfing destinations of Scotland, Southport and Kent as well as Ireland.”

St Enodoc, established back in 1890, was recently awarded 49th position in Top 100 Golf Courses’ World Top 100 course ranking, describing the revered Church Course as ‘a quixotic and rather hilly links course, set amidst towering sand dunes clad with tufts of wild sea grasses’.

The club is also home to the Holywell Course, a shorter and less challenging layout compared to the main course so ideal for juniors, beginners and higher-handicap golfers. It is also popular with holiday makers as a full 18 takes under three hours to go around.

The Irvine Golf Club est 1887

The west coast of Scotland celebrates its glorious past with an eye clearly on the future. In 1860, the Open first came to the west coast of Scotland, when it was played at Prestwick. Since this time, the competition has become the greatest golfing event in the world with Ayrshire firmly at its heart.

Visiting groups are assured of a hugely enjoyable experience at some of the Ayrshire’s multi course venues and excellent stay and play resorts which combine excellent links and parkland golf courses.

There are over fifty golf course to choose from in Ayrshire and Arran. Visitors can choose from classic links to majestic inland layouts.

The open was first played in South Ayrshire in October 1860. Eight golf professionals including Willie Park Snr and Old Tom Morris played three rounds over the 12-hole Prestwick course in one day. Over 150 years later, the Open Championship remains golf’s most prestigious professional tournament and Ayrshire retains its golfing heritage with two Open Championship venues located in the region.

Boasting a stunning links experience, The Irvine Golf Club is set in a seaside location, with the neighbouring Gulf Stream ensuring all-year-round links golf.

Established in 1887, The Irvine is regularly used as an Open Qualifying golf course and truly is one of Scotland’s hidden gems with those that have played the course at The Irvine returning many more times to take on the fairways.

A stunning links golf experience

The golf course owes much of its present day character to the design expertise of legendary golf course architect, James Braid who made interesting use of the landscape with the romantic peaks of Arran making for a stunning backdrop.

Featuring many strategically-placed bunkers catching any wayward shots whilst protecting the long, narrow greens synonymous with some of the great Scottish links; the par 71 course, which measures 6,415 from the championship, white tees represent an enjoyable yet stern test to even the most accomplished of golfer.

The Irvine hosts superb facilities in its wonderfully appointed clubhouse. Visitors are invited to relax in the spacious lounge with views across the golf course and beyond to the surrounding Ayrshire countryside. The clubhouse is home to a well-stocked bar, serving a selection of local ales, beers, wines and spirits as well as daily menus with something to suit all palates and pockets!

Loudoun Gowf Club Gowfing Since 1909

The uniquely named, Loudoun Gowf Club offer some fantastic green fee rates for visitor as well as some of the most reasonablypriced membership packages in Ayrshire, the home of golf.

A ‘gowf field’ is a large arable rural space which is used as home to a gowf hole at one end, which players hit a gutty ball towards from the other end of the field – born from Scottish roots, many gowf fields have become the golf courses of today.

Similarities to these golf clubs, saw gowf clubs embrace the culture and traditions of the club and the local area. Loudoun Gowf Club is the last recognised ‘gowf club’ in the world.

The Gowf Field of Loudoun dates back to the private gowf field of the Loudoun family; with gowf having been played on the land for over 400 years. It is believed that the land has never been under a plough, therefore the turf at Loudoun is unique and probably among the finest of any inland golf course.

Golf on the land in Gaston dates back to as early as 1908. When in 1960, the Countess of Loudoun died; the estate was divided to form part of the Loudoun Gowf Club that can be enjoyed today. Later, in 1966 work began on the clubhouse to be formerly opened one year later, in 1967.

Today, the comfortable clubhouse surroundings are the home to tales of what might have been, as well as well stocked bars and excellent dining options.

Since 1974, most expenditure has been on the course itself with investment in the tools and fertilisers needed to keep the course in the most pristine of conditions. However, in recent years, the golf course has taken a new look with tress lining the fairways and changes to the shape of some of the holes. The greens are larger than they had previously been but still present a stern test for all levels of golfer.

Well worth a visit…
