WELCOME These past nineteen months have been challenging for everyone across the country and around the world. Thanks to the generous support of people like you who are passionate about history, the White House Historical Association has achieved our mission during these difficult times to serve as the private, nonprofit, and nonpartisan partner to the White House.

The ‘60’ on the cover of this catalog honors our founding by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in 1961. The White House Historical Association is celebrating its sixtieth year as her living legacy in historic preservation. We are proud to represent the American people in providing non-taxpayer funding to maintain the museum standard of the White House State Rooms—just as Mrs. Kennedy envisioned. We are also undertaking a growing variety of robust educational programs, teaching the stories of White House history going back to 1792 when the cornerstone was laid.

With this annual catalog, we are especially pleased to share the Official 2021 White House Christmas Ornament, featuring President Lyndon B. Johnson. The ornament depicts a beautiful watercolor of the Blue Room Christmas Tree by Robert H. Laessig, which was commissioned by First Lady "Lady Bird" Johnson for their 1967 Christmas card. On the reverse: "Our mission is at once the oldest and the most basic of this country: to right wrong, to do justice, to serve man." President Johnson spoke these words to a joint session of Congress on March 15, 1965, in support of the Voting Rights Bill.

Holiday THE OFFICIAL 2021 WHITE HOUSE ORNAMENT The White House Historical Association’s 2021 Official White House Christmas Ornament commemorates the presidency of Lyndon Baines Johnson. The ornament features a painting of the 1967 Blue Room Christmas Tree. Mrs. Johnson requested that Robert H. Laessig, a designer for American Greetings, paint the official Christmas tree in the Blue Room for their card that year.

On the other side of the ornament, there is a quote from President Johnson: “Our mission is at once the oldest and the most basic of this country: to right wrong, to do justice, to serve man.”

The president spoke these words to a joint session of Congress on March 15, 1965, calling on legislators to support a bill that would protect the right to vote and outlaw discriminatory measures that prevented African Americans from voting. Johnson’s speech was a response to the violence in Selma, Alabama, where Civil Rights activists were attacked by law enforcement and counter protesters while crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The speech was later remembered by its most famous line, “We Shall Overcome.”

TARTAN COLLECTION A tribute to the Scottish stonemasons who traveled to Washington in 1794 to embellish the sandstone selected by George Washington for the White House. Thirty-five American presidents, from James Monroe to Joseph Biden have claimed Scottish heritage. Leaping into the air, the central figure raises the Shamash high (the candle used to light the others in the menorah). ALMA THOMAS COLLECTION The vibrant colors of Resurrection, created in 1966 by Alma Thomas, recall the techniques used in Pointillism and Abstract Expressionism.
