My fashion collection delves into the nuanced landscape of queer identity, intertwining it with the profound theme ofmemory and change. Through this exploration, I aim to illuminate the multifaceted nature of identity within an ongoing narrative of self-discovery and expression over time (Basil Kincaid (b. 1986, St. Louis, Missouri).
Memory serves as both muse and method in my creative process, allowing me to capture fleeting moments and timeless emotions within the fabric of my designs. I intend to explore the both fixated and fluid nature of memory, how memory is a single place in time but continues to shape and affect identity into the future (Thomas Reid) Wed Mar 18, 2009). I aim to show this contrast through easily recognisable archetypes such as sportswear and suit jackets, and contrasting it against a vibrant and fluid print showing both sides of memory and identity. I invite reflection on the fluidity of identity and the evolving nature of self-perception. This deliberate choice enables a visual and tactile exploration of how we transform over time and adapt within diverse contexts (Christopher R. Madan).
Fashion has long been a militant force over queer expression, boxing people in to conform to a predetermined appearance or aesthetic based on predetermined features such as gender and age. When we enforce style on individuals based on physical attributes and appearance, we lose the expression of who they are inside, their soul. Fashion should never be about fitting in, it should always be about standing out. Standing out and showing the truest reflection of what we feel inside. Fashion is the most effective way we can easily show the world who we are, and the easiest way we can feel good about our identity.
Fragments as a collection works to dissect and deconstruct these typical fashion archetypes, demonstrating that fashion should be freeing, never limiting.
