We interviewed female musicians on their perspective of feminism in the alternative rock scene, showcased besides live photography of them rocking out at their gigs. This is interspersed with high fashion editorial images to reference this multifaceted nature of femininity - women can be delicate and strong at the same time.

Contrast is at the core of riot grrrl fashion: military boots paired with miniskirts; flannel shirt paired with mini dresses, shaved head and natural makeup. Throughout, the choice of flowers are used as a metaphorthe expectation of soft, delicacy is shattered by using sharp, edged flowers with thorns and spikes.

heavy petal is inspired by the riot grrrl movement and how it did not reject stereotypical feminine traits, but instead leaned into them while making them unique.

Ellen Soffe, lead singer and guitarist from the up & coming band; Ellen & The Ooroos, hails from south-east Sydney. Ellen & The Ooroos had their first gig together on the 17th of March 2022, and have been growing in popularity amongst the young adults in the live music scene ever since. At the young band’s first gig was an immediate connection with the audience, and charm oozing out of the lead singer, you could tell that the newly formed band had strong chemistry from the back of the grimy venue.

Ellen was wearing a beautiful white dress, with boots and her stylishly messy hair, she explains this experience of wearing a dress as “Just putting something on and rockin’ out on stage, I think it (punk-rock and dresses) is a nice mix”.

Ellen states her musical influences as Amyl & The Sniffers, Joan Jett, Bob Dylan, Julia Jacklin and Mazzy Star.

“F***in’
dress and you get up there and rock out.. I’m gonna go out there and f***in’ get all sweaty, and yell at people on stage, it’s fun!”

Bassist for

When asked about feminism in punk rock, Eva, the bassist of Ellen & the Ooroos, states that it is very important to her as punk rock gives people the freedom to let loose and explore the more wild and energetic parts of themselves, especially rage and dissatisfaction that society always tries to repress in women.

On one hand, Eva doesn’t think about the implication of being feminine presenting in the alternative rock scene, she views herself as a musician like anyone else, but she also feels that it is powerful to be a woman in the alt-rock scene, as it is not often encouraged to be ‘out there’ as it is for male musicians.

“I think it’s important to let women take up space in punk rock. Being in a band and not shying away from the attention of the crowd feels pretty cool!!”

ROSE, HANNAH, ALICE & LIV.

Hailing from Newcastle, NSW, Ragdoll, is a feminine punk band, who have been performing together since they were in high-school. Ragdoll’s favourite artists, that have influenced their sound, are Bikini Kill, The Runaways and Rage Against the Machine.

Ragdoll values the versatility of expressing themselves femininely, masculinely, aggressively, and in any way they want. Ragdoll believes in NO RULES. With alt-rock, they found a place in which they could feel comfortable playing, dressing and singing whatever they liked.

To Ragdoll, feminism in punk is all about pursuing the music that they love, even if it goes against the grain, and isn’t the typical thing for women in music to do.

They have found that bands, no matter how they present, have been nothing but encouraging, even if they find themselves the only females backstage, they have received an overwhelming amount of support, from friends supporting them at gigs, to full blown moshpits breaking out while Ragdoll performs.

“It was a way of expressing ourselves.. We chose punk rock because of the feeling of pure elation we all felt when we could just go AT IT.”
