FUTILE UTILITY FORMS FUNCTION IN LOOSE LUXURY. A NEW LOOK AT 80S SCI FI AND CYBERPUNK MEDIA.
In contrast to 1950s optimistic view of the future, the 1980s suggested a cyber dystopia – where every man was for himself and the streets were full of neon lights, flying cars and debauchery. I wanted to draw ideas from the 1980s view of the 2020s, as well as our 2020s view of an exaggerated 1980s through a fashion forward restyling of 80s sci fi heroes’ utility wear, neon lights, flying cars and debauchery. The term ‘retrofuture’ is in itself an oxymoron, where in pairing the two words, it highlights their difference - although the words are not necesarily antonyms. This same element is used in fashion design to pair two ideas as not only contrasting but also complimentary. To express this concept in this collection I have paired luxury with utility and looseness.

The collection is composed of pieces that contain hallmarks of denim and utilitywear with luxury unique fabrications and finishes. The hero body is made up of the following. An eye popping pair of double jeans, with a dramatic functional pocket down the whole leg, and a shock of pink visible at the hip. An ultra thick cotton moleskin utility shirt with silk hand bound curve details and chunky buttons. The superfuture denim texture made from a patchwork of repurposed jeans and jackets is applied to the batwing sherpa lined jacket with glamourous fur collar.
