GRACIE MACLEOD

Gracie Macleod is a fashion student currently studying at the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Melbourne, Australia. Originally from Tasmania, her inspiration is drawn from her home environment, specifically its beautiful coastlines. She creates contemporary designs that translate natural landscapes into thoughtful, concept- driven fashion through storytelling, silhouette and form.

DESIGN STATEMENT

Sustainability is embedded at the core of Below the Surface. Discarded mussel shells that are otherwise destined for landfill; have been cleaned, sanded, and embroidered into garments, becoming delicate traces of memory and material history.

The collection also features fish leather, a circular material sourced from the waste of the fishing industry. It is surprisingly

durable, uniquely textured, and deeply connected to the marine narrative of the collection. By using this material, the collection reimagines waste as luxury — honoring the ocean not just as inspiration, but as a collaborator.

Below the Surface is a poetic yet grounded reflection on what it means to grow, to adapt, and to descend — only to find a new kind of light in the dark.

The styling emphasizes a bold and commanding aesthetic inspired by the ocean; which merges experimental textures. Black leather closed toe heels anchor the look with power and edge, while handcrafted fish leather belts with snap fastenings highlights innovation. Hair is styled with a shell headband, and other accessories include shell earings and bangles. Striking dark makeup adds a disruptive element, balancing intensity with the artistry of the shells and fish leather; reinforcing the overall atmosphere of confidence, experimentation, and modern subversion.
