Concept Statement

T

he purpose of skin is to protect us and act like a barrier to the rest of the world. Filled with nerve endings, it is how we touch and engage with the world and each other, each and every day. The Skin collection aims to create an ulterior identity that captures confidence, beauty and determination within its wearer, because after all, how are we supposed to change the world and achieve greatness if we don’t feel confident within ourselves? Ghandi once said, “If you want to change the world, start with yourself.” I believe this to be true. In a constantly developing and changing world it is very easy to develop insecurities and lose sight and connection of yourself. However, if we start by dressing each day in clothes that empower us to be more confident, we are much more likely to have greater focus on the important things in life.

Original, digitally created prints of the female identity are used in an abundance throughout this collection alongside soft luxurious wools, which assist in capturing themes of beauty, and confidence. Skin features a range of modesty levels to suit all women, and toys with the idea of ‘masculine femme,’ with silhouettes inspired by uniformality, deconstructed to create modern, femme garments. A range of soft fabrications have been chosen, including, light and medium weight wools, stretch knits, as well as the odd rigid fabric to bring some stability and tie the collection together. Skin deconstructs the ideas of strength and beauty in a contemporary and modern way; embracing individuality and ensuring selfconfidence within all wearers.

Colour Trend. The colour scheme for the 'SKIN' collection was inspired by colours of the earth, and colours of its wearer. However, after analysing different runway shows and current trends, it became apparent that neutrals and browns are flying high in popularity. We're seeing these colours make an appearance on runways including; Dolce & Gabbana, Arje, Adam Lippes, Givenchy as well as many others. I decided on setting my colour palette as warm neutral browns and creams because of this.

A New Abstract Print For A New Chic Woman The print that I created for look one was inspired by collage and the female identity. I began by playing around with images from my moodboard as well as Pinterest, and developed my style throughout experimenting with different images, and discovering what I liked and didn’t like, to create the print seen on my look one garments. From this, I developed my print further by using two models I know, and using their photograph and the same digital collaging techniques to create a fresh print, in the same style and colour scheme that can be seen throughout looks three and four. Both prints, although different, contain the same aesthetic, meaning, and versatility, which has contributed to the shaping of this collection.
