g

Maria Maria Grazia Chiuri is an Italian fashion designer. After Fendi, she spent seventeen years at Valentino before being named creative director at Dior.

M

aria Grazia Chiuri was previously the director of Valentino, but as of late has taken the reigns at Dior. She is known for her strong allusions to feminism in her collections while also paying homage to tarot and toile du jouy, things that are heavily significant to the house of Dior. Tarot card motif, Toile du Jouy, and the ‘New look’ silhouette. For her debut collection at Dior, her intention was to not only celebrate the clients but also the seamstresses. She also paid homage to Christian

Dior by having the show at 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris where Dior had his shop in 1946. She debuted T-shirts with slogans that read ‘Sisterhood is global’ and ‘We should all be feminists’ and gained viral attention and subsequently sold out, Chiuri has brought a new face of feminism to Dior in appreciation and admiration of all the women in the fashion industr y that go without acknowledgement.

Anya Josephine Marie TaylorJoy is an actress and model.

T

a y l o r - J o y ’s eyes, hair and accent have been cited as her trademarks. Since 2020, she has been chosen as the brand ambassador for brands such as Viktor & Rolf and Tiffany & Co. Anya Taylor-Joy has already been spotted wearing Dior to red carpet events and even arrived to the Dior 2022 show (in Athens) wearing a floor length, flowing gold gown. Anya Taylor-Joy is often styled elegantly for photoshoots where her natural beauty is the main focus but also the clothing she wears as well. For my own shoot I will style my model with elegance and chicness but also incorporating the Primary colours for a a pop of colour and fun. The denim piece itself will be blue but the styling and accessories will

have aspects of red and yellow but not all three together. Anya Taylor-Joy would be an excellent brand ambassador for Dior as she is currently trending within the target market’s age group. With her success in ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ (Netflix), she is becoming more popular amongst the younger generation. She is usually seen with her hair out with a red lip. The style she portrays is angelic, elegant and doll-like (fits with the Dior brand) her stylist is Law Roach.

DENIM AND DIOR D

enim has become a staple at Dior as it is a main fabric used in the majority of their garments. Most iconically the Saddle bag. Denim has been seen as more of a ‘streetwear’ fabric as it is easily accessible, affordable and also has the ability to last a long time. Dior has incorporated denim into many of their accessories and garments to give their customers a more casual feel while also maintaining the luxury of the

brand. Denim is also diverse as any age group in all geographical markets can wear denim, therefore not alienating loyal customers but also appealing to the younger demographic. By today’s standards, Dior Homme denim from that era has more in common with standard slim fits you’ll find at the mall, but at the time the jeans were considered shockingly skinny. Slimane’s most popular models were 17cm and 19cm fits, named for the leg opening of each cut.

COLLECTION

aria Grazia Chiuri is a woman who knows too much, and Uniwax was only one of five significant collaborations in this Resort outing. A Moroccan women’s textile and ceramics association called Sumano created the more tapestrylike woven pieces in the collection, including the fringed coat of Look 1. The American artist Mickalene Thomas and the Jamaican-British designer Grace Wales Bonner each provided their own interpretation of the New Look: Thomas’s featured a Bar jacket entirely beaded on the back in one her collaged prints, while Wales Bonner augmented her precision tailoring with raffia embroideries. A designer from the Ivory Coast named Monsieur Pathé’O, who was known for making Nelson Mandela’s shirts, designed a look for the collection featuring the late ANC leader’s face on the back. And Stephen Jones collaborated with a Ghanaian-British milliner named Martine Henry on the head wraps or turbans of unspecific ethnic origin. Everything was about the joys of collaboration and

a kind of polyglot, artisanal reverie. There were dresses encrusted with Murano glass beads, because those very beads originated in Venice but found their way to Africa. There were interpretations of the Uniwax toiles in double-face cashmere and silk jacquard, so in other words, African prints reworked by small European mills. It’s a lot of backstory to tell about some absolutely lovely, low-key clothes (including four white lace dresses for bohemian brides, three jersey columns for mothers of those brides, two red carpet gowns in chocolate and cardinal, and one denim jumpsuit). But fashion is changing and the where, the why, and the how of design has never mattered more. We all need to buy less and buy better, to invest in items made with care, respect, and love. We don’t need the digital imitations; we need the real deal. This is perhaps the finest realization thus far of Maria Grazia Chiuri’s insistent vision of a global feminism accessed through fashion.
