DIOR he introduced a variety of alternate silhouettes, including the H-line, the A-line and the Y-line. Dior was largely responsible for commercializing Parisian fashion globally after temporarily coming second to American designers. After Dior’ sudden death in 1957, Yves Saint Laurent (Dior’s assistant) took over the couture house. Saint Laurent held this position until 1960, when he was enlisted into the French Army (C. Nast 2021). Marc Bohan then presented his first collection for the label and began a nearly threedecade reign. He was followed by Gianfranco Ferré, who manned the ship for seven years. taking over in 1996, John Galliano remains the head designer of Dior today.
HOUSE OF DIOR LEGACY
French fashion designer Christian Dior conquered the world of fashion in the decade following world war II. In the midst of a financial crisis in the 1930’s he went to work illustrating fashions for the weekly Figaro Illustre, then an assistant designer for the leading courtier of Paris and four years later joined the house of designer Lucien Lelong (1889-1958). In 1947, Dior created an all new silhouette, featuring small shoulders, a cinched waist and voluminous skirt (Britannica pub. 2021). Inspired by hours spent in his mother’s rose garden, these flowers never cease to inspire his creations. This juxtaposed the short skirt and padded shoulders trend during world war II. ARIA GRAZIA CHIURI In July 2016, Christian Dior officially named Maria Grazia Chiuri as its new artistic director, filling the position that Raf Simons vacated in October 2015 — and making her the first woman to hold the job in the house’s history. Born in Rome, Chirui studied at the city’s Istituto Europeo di Design. After working at Fendi for a decade, she was then hand selected by Valentino Garavani in 1999 to design accessories for his brand. Chiuri loved to work with her co-creator there, Pierpaolo Piccioli stating in a New York times interview in 2016 “It’s so much better to share a vision in fashion”. Chiuru earned critics praise on her work from Valentino. In an article about spring 2016 couture, Vanessa Friedman said the co-creators “turned dresses into dreams on the body.” Chiuri makes history by taking the position
as the first woman to helm Dior. Though she has a difficult job ahead of her in light of Dior’s falling fashion sales, she’s ready to take on the job. She is a huge advocate for feminist rights (L. Collins pub.2018), battling for legalisation of the pill and abortions in the 1970s. she strongly believes in educating people to change their outlook, as history can not be rewritten, we can only move forward in a less naïve matter. Chiuri wishes to convey powerful messages of feminism through Dior’s produce. her WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS shirt—a plain black or white tee with the title of the Nigerian ¬novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s manifesto—became a sensation after Rihanna, a Dior ambassador, posted a picture of herself wearing it on Instagram, and was the sell-out of the season.
DENIM
&
DIOR Two denim stories can be seen within within Dior’s resort collection. Popularised by the working class for its durability, the first denim story is the bar jacket and ankle length A-line skirt, a reflection of the practicality of denim as workwear. The second story features a lighter denim, embroidered and embellished with beads. These details are featured on jeans, skirts, vests and jackets which mirrors the first looks silohette. The incoorporation of denim is inspired by Georgia O’keefe’s “understated androgynous style”. (N. Phelps 2017)

Georgia O’Keeffe was an American painter who was among the most influential figures in Modernism, best known for her large-format paintings of natural forms, especially flowers and bones, and for her depictions of New York City skyscrapers and architectural and landscape forms unique to northern New Mexico. (Barbara Buhler Lynes) Georgia O’Keefe sparked inspi-
ration for Maria Grazia Chiuri’s resort collection for Dior in 2018. Chiuri included a range of black and white looks, inspired by O’Keefe’s minimalistic and fluid aesthetic. Varying in materials and shapes, creating feminine silhouettes with thin black belts, and each outfit was completed with a wide brimmed hat. (S Menkes, 2017)

FEMENISM As a huge advocate for Feminists rights (L. Collins pub.2018), this empowerment is expressed in the 2018 resort collection. Cohesion was created through balance between utilitarian oversized trench coats, broad shoulder sleeves and an industrial style black boot. Juxtaposing the feminine maxi dresses with cinched waists and styled with sandal flats, the collection highlights the variety and flexibility of women’s fashion and combining traditionally masculine and feminine elements to create an edgy and empowering collections.
paintings, mainly portraying large native animals in the region. These cave paintings are a huge influence on the designs of Dior’s 2018 resort collection. (S Menkes, 2017) The artwork was painted onto the walls using a range of earthy colours and shades, locally sourced from minerals and rock pigment. Chiuri found inspiration in Dior’s history, in the 1951 Ovale collection that included prints inspired by the Lascaux paintings. Chirui made her own iterations from the prints and included them in the resort 2018 collection. The print can be seen on the white Found in Southern knitwear, fur and suede France, the Lascaux looks, silk and jacquard caves are filled with pieces. (E. Jenson 2017) 20,000-year-old

FANNING
L E
American Actress and model Elle Fanning is no stranger to the world of high end fashion. Elle Fanning walked the runway to close Miu Miu’s autumn/winter ‘18/’19 show, wearing an oversized coat with her hair teased into a towering beehive, she established herself as a high-fashion favourite. The actress and model had, of course, starred in campaigns for the Italian house since 2014. She’s also been the face of Tiffany & Co, appeared on the cover of American Vogue and added L’Oréal Paris ambassador to her CV in 2017 (Radhika Seth, 2020, Vogue). Some of Fanning’s most extravagant red-carpet looks have been in Dior gowns at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 and 2019. Her off-duty ensembles consisted of Temperley London midi dresses and bejewelled slides. Fanning is pas-
sionate about promoting positive messages on her social media, and the importance of having a voice. On her Instagram she promotes ballot voting, the ‘Women of Wealth’ gala which promotes youth empowerment and educational podcasts educating others on pivotal issues such as the dangers of diet pills. Amongst this, she presents fashion, plugs her TV shows, films and other projects, as well as health and wellness. Many of the morals and what Fanning stands for aligns with Dior brand legacy. As a busy working women, her lifestyle is cohesive with the utilitarian aesthetic of denim. Furthermore, Maria Grazia Chiuri’s strong messages of women empowerment correlates with the organisation and companies Fanning promotes e.g. “Women of Wealth”.
