MARIA
grazia chiuri
Italian Fashion Designer Maria Grazia Chiuri approaches fashion like anthropology and reflects her feminism beliefs into her designs. She became creative director at Dior in 2016 and was the first female to take that position and she has not only started a conversation but invited the world to become more involved in being feminists. Maria says that fashion is no longer just about clothes but is
9
about displaying creativity and critically looking at the past. To understand Christian Dior’s work she likes to look at the archives and the ‘house codes’ which are checks and the colour blue. Her ability to work with such creativity people is such an honour to her. Maria consistently spreads the message of ‘we should all be feminists’ whether that’s on a t-shirt or through the collaboration with other female creatives.
DIOR X DENIM
Denim became a staple at Dior when Maria Grazia Chiuri became creative director. Overall her aim was make her collections more relaxed and attract a younger female audience. She felt that she needed to broaden Dior’s scope. Maria definitely felt the pressure of this new change to the brand as people around her thought it wasn’t the right choice to make but it ended up paying off. Now Dior has several campaigns featuring denim and it just shows how it can be so versatile. Denim is a fashion item that everyone owns and by introducing it into the Dior world it allowed consumers to feel luxurious in wearing something that is commonly associated with a more casual workwear vibe. It opened the brand to a new audience and has allowed creativity with a new range of silhouettes and fabrics. This denim collaboration explores a baggy silhouette while also being very feminine with an exaggerated floral arrangement. The denim on denim design is very trendy as double denim is a very popular styling method. Some people may feel as if denim on denim is too much of a statement but with this campaign we went people to feel confident and not be afraid to try something bold.

Flowers Flowers were always an inspiration to Christian Dior and he believed that “after women, flowers are the most divine creations”. This collaboration is heavily influenced by flowers and Dior’s beautiful rose garden. The house of Dior’s famous flower is the lily of the valley which fits perfectly with brand ambassador Lily Collins as they have the same name. Every single flower in this world has a certain meaning and this garment will allow people to be able to put their own meaning onto garment as a representation of themselves. Flowers are such a delicate form of nature and Lily Collins herself has tattooed “true delicacy is not a fragile thing” on her body. These words reveal how delicacy can be perceived as something weak but in fact it actually is stronger than most people think. Despite this jackets large flower design it displays fragility and a feminine energy while also being very expressive.
The
Legacy.
Christian Dior was a French designer who was known to be very superstitious. He founded Dior in 1946 and showed his first collection in 1947 which included 90 different looks that were very structured. The style that first made him famous was the ‘Bar Suit’ which was a
dress with a nipped-in waist and full skirt which stopped below the mid-calf. This style gave a strong hourglass figure to women which lead to his designs being praised for their femininity. In 1989, the ‘Slim Look’ was created which was an adaptation of Dior’s iconic ‘Bar Suit’ silhouette made by

Marc Bohan. After Dior’s death, Yves Saint Laurent took over and then when he was drafted into the war Marc Bohan took his place. In 2016, Maria Grazia Chiuri took her place in Dior and to this day is promoting feminism and expressing lots of femininity within her designs like Christian Dior did.
