01. C O N C E P T The BEYOND 2022 Trans-seasonal Ready-toWear collection embraces and explores the unfamiliar through the surrealist lens; challenging tradition and welcoming the new age.

EYOND is inspired by David Bowie who is the muse for this collection. It adheres to a vibrant primar y colour palette inspired by surrealist ar tists Rene Magritte’s 1928 ‘Les Amants/The Lovers’ (Magritte,1928), Salvador Dali’s 1937 ‘Metamorphosis of Narcissus’ (Dali, 1937) and Max Ernst 1937 ‘ The Triumph of Surrealism’ (Ernst, 1937). Magritte’s ar twork captures two figures kissing with their faces concealed (MoMAS, 2014); disguising the gender and sexuality of the other which in this context is the unfamiliar. The painting was recreated in a hand illustrated print that was digitally modified and used as a motif throughout the collection. The sense of unfamiliarity is fur ther conveyed through the distor tion of the

faces by smoking out of the faces. This collection pushes traditional binar y ways of thinking through challenging the male and female archetypes, creating genderqueer aesthetics. The BEYOND collection is composed of 3 bodies with distor ted surrealist silhouettes. The first body introduces the traditional male archetype created from a 100% cotton with a large scale red placement print. It is an oversized traditional concealed button down shir t that extends past the hip to create a drop waist illusion. Large circular openings are created in the side of the body with asymmetric drawstring sleeves which includes a collar detailing. It is paired with exaggerated circular shaped shor ts with a 100%

S T A T E M E N T blue cotton drill fabrication. The second body reveals the female archetype utilising 100% red sheer silk to suggest the female figure and cur ved lines to continue the drop waist motif as well as the circular back opening. The female archetype is juxtaposed against the relaxed tailoring of the jumpsuit. The outer wear for this body includes a voluminous coat with a hoodie and oversized draped adjustable drawstring sleeves composed of 100% Organic Cotton. The body is then accessorised with 100% cotton blue knit long sleeved gloves. The hero body fuses the binar y archetypes; presenting a genderqueer body. It includes a 100% blue cotton knit skivvy paired with a balaclava mask composed of 80% matte polyester, 20% spandex print fabrication. An adjustable cur tain drawstring skir t with a sheer polyester composition is also worn which is a digitally modified print of black brushstrokes over a textured blue background. The body is accessorised with a drop waist corset

created from repurposed fabric black denim fabric with large brass eyelets. The outer wear includes a cropped jacket hoodie with an exaggerated leg of mutton sleeve created from 100% organic cotton which also includes 80% matte polyester, 20% spandex gloves. The 2022 Trans-seasonal Ready-toWear collection is catered to the empowered creative youth who are expressive in their expressions of gender and sexuality. They are bold and courageous and always aim to challenge the status quo.

HERO BODY FABRICS

The printed fabrics references René Magritte’s 1928 ‘ The Lovers’ which was recreated and hand illustrated in gouache paint. It was then digitised in three different colour ways which include variations of tile prints and placement prints which is seen in the 80% Matte Polyester, 20% Spandex and Organic Cotton fabric. The Polyester blue swirl print was digitally manipulated from an image of a print. All prints were sourced from the digital printing ser vice Next State. Both Next State fabrics are Polyester based fabrics which use the sustainable Transfer Dye-Sublimation method which uses water based dyes and paper which is recycled. The black Sateen Polyester and the 100% Cotton were upcycled from thrifted fabric and fabrics from previous projects. The 100% blue Sateen fabric was sourced from spotlight and the 100% Merino Wool was sourced from The Fabric Store which stocks deadstock .

The Red Cotton Print was printed from The Next State and the Sateen Polyester sourced from spotlight. The 100% blue Cotton Drill was sourced from Drapers Fabrics, since it is a natural fibre waterbased Pigment Ink is utilised which does not require water in its dying process.
