CHRISTIAN DIOR Mr Dior was born in 1905, in a seaside town of Granville on the coast of Normandy. At age 5 his family moved to Paris, where he grew as a creative from a young age, selling his sketches on the street to make pocket money. However, it wasn’t till he was 41 that he made a colossal impact in the fashion industry, opening his couture house in October 1946. With his shockingly out of the box designs that were reigned the New Look, he offered a sense of youthful, hope at a time woman really needed it. The man himself, was extremely superstitious, always having 13 models when he showed his collections. The number 8 was also hugely implemented, founding his house in the 8th arrondissement of Paris on October 8th. It’s no surprise Dior was so heavily invested in tarot cards and numbers, as it was a fortune-teller, Madame Delahaye, that accurately predicted his success. Delahaye not only guided Dior on key decisions on setting up a couture house under his own name, but it also may have led to his death. She pressed Dior not to travel to Montecatini, Italy. Unfortunately, to everyone’s dismay, he died on the ill-fated voyage in 1957 from a heart attack.

Born in Rome, Italy Maria Grazia Chiuri is an Italian fashion designer. She has worked at a number of remarkable fashion houses including Fendi where she helped developed the famous Baguette bag and recruited the designer Pierpaolo to join the department. She also took the reins of the accessories line at Valentino in 1999. However, you could say her most pivotal work has been since taking on the position as creative director at Christian Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri has endeavoured to reinvent the traditionally masculine house as a symbol of feminist values and ideals. One of Maria’s central themes is strong women, it’s nice to note that she has many women who have inspired her throughout her life and career including her mother, colleagues at Fendi, Frida Kahlo, her daughter and the female artists who have collaborated with Dior.
“
Maria Grazia Chiuri is really like an orchestra conductor, she manages to bring together different personalities – musicians, singers, artist, performers, with these amazing collections to create different sounds which together create an incredible synphony.

You will often see ASAP Rocky’s campaigns styled with finely cut coats, implementing bold and elaborate jewellery. This isn’t too different to his selfbranding and styling. ASAP Rocky’s style is original, complex and multi-layered to achieve both an eccentric and clean look. Most of the time he will be spotted in an elaborate coat, bold in colour or large in size, styled with neutral undergarments such as scoop neck t-shirts or white button up, to ensure the coat will pop as intended. Working with a variety of photographers on campaigns, Rocky has teamed up with Dior Homme, JW Anderson, Guess Originals, Calvin Klein which the campaign was set in a “familiar suburban environment” that was intended to capture the spirit of today’s youth. (Espinoza, 2019). As well as his DKNY campaign featuring Cara Delevingne and Dylan Rieder, evidencing a younger target audience. Potentially young adults aged 16 years and older, of both genders.

DIOR RESORT 2022
The goddess gown, also known as a peplum, is an ethereal garment worn by women in ancient Greece and is seen throughout Dior’s 2022 Cruise collection. With its influential visual allure, the garment symbolises not just the feminine divine, but because its unconstructed, lazy lines deliver a sartorial materialization of freedom — its loosely draped and pleated folds
convey that woman must be free to live and to create as they choose. (Dudani, 2021). Strong women and femininity have always been fierce themes for Maria Grazia Chiuri designs, starting with her debut collection Spring/ Summer 2017. Collaborating with author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s powerful words “We should all be feminists.”

DIOR RESORT 2022 The silhouette of a garment is the shape it creates when it’s hanging on the wearer, and Christian Dior brought recognition to one of the most flattering silhouettes to date. Taking us back to spring of 1955 when he released ‘the A-line collection’. This collection featured a wide variety of silhouettes that were fitted up top and flared out with darts in the bottom—one of the most popular looks was a flared jacket worn over a full pleated skirt, creating a look like a capital A. (MasterClass staff, 2020). In 1958, after Yves Saint Laurent had taken over as creative director for the Dior fashion house, he went on to
launch a full collection consisting of only A-line dresses. Moving into the 1960’s, the A-line silhouette only gained more popularity. Dresses, skirts and tunics all got their adjustments to the 1960’s style, they were easy to move in, dance in and pretty much live in. (The Fashion Folks, 2016). Throughout Dior’s Cruise 2022 collection we can see a reoccurring theme of A-line style garments. Resort wear has been designed to be wearable, and Maria has really captured this by implementing several A-line silhouettes, being that this silhouette is a staple for many people, suiting a wide variety of shapes and sizes, in a flattering way.

Maria Grazia Chiuri has a passion for collaborating with different artist’s and artisans from around the globe, always starting a new conversation. In cruise 2022, tailor Aristeidis Tzonevraki created a Book Tote and a Bar Jacket using a unique method through which the items are structured by way of embroidery, bringing new dimension to them. Artist Christiana Soulou created a series of pastel-coloured drawings translated into a printed dress for the Cruise 2022 collection in Athens. (Wong, 2021). “A dress carries a fragment of the work of art, the dress is also the body that wears it, and the work of art that the dress wears go hand in hand.” (Soulou, 2021). 17
MGC appears to be broadening Dior’s reach by showcasing denim on the catwalk in the shape of jeans, styled with higher end pieces such as leather jackets, as well as basic collared shirts and scoop neck t-shirts.. Giving the opportunity to be both relevant and attract more young women to the brand. (Horyne, 2017). However, there is certainly a running theme of denim throughout Dior’s history. Going back to Spring 2000, John Galliano put denim on the runway in the form of microskirts and asymmetrically cut corset tops. Nonetheless MGC, has shown us that denim is a respected and reputable fabric and can be worn by women for practical work wear (Fall 2017 – ready to wear), casually (Spring 2018 – ready to wear), and has a luxury (Resort 2020). 18

NEW YORK – Fall ready-to-wear 2017 Outer wear is a huge must in New York during fall, oversized coats never go astray. Pairing the coat with a classic collared shirt and some slouchy jeans for all day comfort. A good pair of denim jeans is a staple in fall, being the perfect base for any outfit (Homan, 2019). With the lower temperatures and rain, ensuring you have head wear to keep you cosy and your hair from getting messy. This Dior outfit, is darker in colour, keeping on trend with New Yorkers generally wearing black or Navy most of the time, it’s functional and smart.

Capsule collection #01 in collaboration with ASAP Rocky takes the strong elements of tactile and visual texture using a paint splatter technique inspired by the artist Janet Sobel. She was the first artist to use the drip painting technique, who directly influenced Jackson Pollock who then became among the most influential artists of the art movement ‘Abstract expressionism’. Unfortunately for Sobel, she was often overshadowed by her male counterparts as the ‘Abstract Expressionist’ movement was male dominated. Implementing some of Maria Grazia Chiuri fundamental themes of strong women and artist collaboration and bringing this to light through my design. This piece has been intended to be completely unique and one of a kind, just like its wearer. Communicating through elements and principles a sense of abstract art and expression, with the art lovers in mind this piece is personal and marketed at any gender who aspires to express their identity through fashion. Colour, texture, pattern, repetition and unity successfully work together to create something that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. A denim garment is forever, and consumers purchase it with the intention to wear it season after season. Taking this, along with exclusivity, scarcity and quality craftsmanship you have the most luxurious denim A-line coat on the market.
