The vision and purpose of Willow is to encourage human connection and experiences that enliven, support and advocate human wellness in mind, body and spirit in the one urban destination. Situated on High street Armadale within two double story heritage buildings, the façades have been restored to their original grandeur. Combining sanctuary and self-care, Willow Urban Retreat’s interior of soft tones, textures, natural light and seamless curves provide a welcome retreat from the cityscape. Through this project we highlighted how holistic wellness design and architecture can actively influence our experience of well being and restoration. The palette andmaterials of Willow are soft and natural primarily consisting of stone, jade green onyx, hand applied cement render and bespoke pigmented hand-poured cement bar and stools made by local artisan Maddie Sharrock. A collaborationg with Christopher Boots on a crystal feature light pendant in the Tea Room. The finishes of Willow are intentionally subtle, enduring and minimal to maintain the balance of a healthy wellness design build, that is adaptable and durable.

DESIGN STATMENT Willow urban retreat is expanding to offer a bespoke experience in its sister venture, willow seaside retreat. This boutique hotel and spa is located in one of Sydney’s most prestigious suburbs, darling point. This venue will focus on providing a revitalizing coastal reboot with an emphasis on wellness for our clientele to completely recharge and reset in nature. There will be a focus on creating an community minded intimate experiences and personal relationships. Willow will be a destination that embodies a sense of escapism, transporting you into a immersive hideaway.

COLOUR PALETTE Drawing upon the natural environment to inform the colour palette of rich earthy tones, soft ocean blues and calming tones of green. Creating a harmonious combination of soothing and gentle hues that reflect nature.

MATERIALS
Supported with materials such as exposed rock, raw wood, natural stone and textural fabrics to facilitate the connection to the earth and getting back to our roots and to the core of human nature. The design explores how space, light and materiality can actively contribute to human health, performance and well-being. Materials are kept to a minimum for simplicity, purity and restraint - the intention to slow the occupants and re-connect with nature and its cycles.

ENTRANCE The walkway guides guest along the path towards the oversized arched doorway, leading into the double height cave like atrium that resembles moving from lightness to darkness. This transitional space evokes a sense of crossing over into a new experience.

012. RECEPTION The reception is the heart of the main building, with solid geometric forms both in the overhead arch detail and the solid granite desk that ground the space and guide the eye downwards. Organic sculptural objects juxtapose the hard surfaces, emanating an art gallery atmosphere- A Fenella elms porcelain artwork behind the reception. A soniah floorlamp by yakusha and halfsphere lamp by lisa allegra delicately adorn the space for mood lighting. A relationship between solid and organnic shapes create a dynamic sensory experience.
013. RESTAURANT The Mediterranean inspired restaurant is a relaxed space that focuses on farm to table produce grown on site to formulate a holistic approach to wellbeing. Materials such as raw stone and reclaimed timber contrast the concrete floors and angularity of the building.

014. TERRACE The terrace is the outdoor component of the restaurant and café with large sliding glass doors that allow the flow between indoor and outdoor. This is the most public area with completely unobstructed views out across the Sydney harbour. The west courtyard garden provides homegrown produce for the kitchen as well as for educational programs.

ACCOMDODATION There is a balance between the textured jute carpet, raw timber detail and plush upholstery that is contrasted with polished travertine and glass. The Felt in motion artwork by Miriam Verbeek frames the bed adding an textural focal point.

ENSUITE The guest ensuites have a seamless continuation from the bedroom. It is designed to be tranquil with a solid marble bathtub positioned to get the best views out across the bay. A combination of floor to ceiling windows, travertine and recycled timber create a natura and relaxing spa like space.

DAY SPA The day spa is designed around the conversation between light and dark- symbolizing the journey of going deep within ourselves to our inner core. situated on the bedrock concept level and is designed to mimic the idea of being carved into the cliffside with cave like features throughout.

022. BOATHOUSE AND POOL

BOATHOUSE The boatshed executive suite is designed for an immersive waterfront experience. This self contained two story building has a kitchenette, lounge area, bathroom and guest room for clients that want to stay for extended periods of time. A private infinity lap pool flows through the living room and out across the ocean to seamlessly bring the outdoors inside.

024. POOL Located at the bottom of the winding staircase that moves from the main level all the way to the pool deck which is perched along the waterfront. This area was designed as a waterside relaxing area with timber decking, sun lounges and a waterfall pool.
