P L AY T H E R A PY M E L B O U R N E , A N I M A L A S S I S T E D T H E R A PY C E N T R E Play Therapy Melbourne have been delivering quality therapeutic and evidence-based support for children and families since 2010. They have a dedicated team of qualified mental health professionals who are guided by their understanding of interpersonal neurobiology and the nervous system.

Play within a positive environment has been proven to help children explore their feelings, process their experiences and reach their full potential.

Positive experiences can help heal trauma and improve other conditions – including autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, anxiety and depression. One of the most effective ways to provide that positive support for children is through non-verbal activities – like play. Play Therapy Melbourne are expanding their ser vices into the hear t of Sydney and are looking to design the level 4 and level 5 (terrace) of 388 George Street, Sydney.

THE PAVILION (THE SITE)

FJMT designed a mixed-use pavilion, that includes 5 storeys of commercial and retail space. The new development is a separate building attached to the main building (388 George Street formally known as the King George Tower, NRMA building and IAG House).

LIGHT-RAIL

In response to increasing bus congestion in the CBD, on 13 December 2012, the NSW Government announced a commitment to build a light rail from Circular Quay down George Street to Central station before continuing east to Kensington and Randwick. Services commenced in 2019. The light rail is now the closest mode of transport to the site as it is directly in front of 388 George Street, essentially connecting many different suburbs and people to the site.

THE BRIEF.

PAL Design Group was founded by Dr. Patrick Leung in 1994. Dr. Leung graduated from the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University back in 1978. Since then, he has been selected as one of the Top Ten Designers in China and in Hong Kong, as well as one of the most influential ones in Greater China. His design philosophy brings together innovative creativity, timeless appeal and spiritual allure, effortlessly fusing the best elements from both the East and the West. Each space has been artistically designed with harmony and comfort in mind to enhance the quality of life, and for an environment which brings fun and joy.

NUBO is an early learning centre designed for 2-8 year old children. NUBO was created so families had a place to feel empowered and nurtured during the parenting journey.

NUBO embraces play as more than a childhood distraction, and so the aim was to create a playful space for families to connect and grow. NUBO provides play without borders in order to enrich children and their development and help them thrive. The design offers a flexible, stimulating and inclusive learning environment to encourage boundless imagination, as well as space for adults to join alongside their children too.

C O N C E P T.

S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y.

The concept behind the design is ‘Pure Play’.

The idea is that the space is a stimulating and inclusive environment designed to encourage learning, curiosity and boundless imagination. NUBO - meaning cloud in Spanish - symbolises a space with unlimited potential to grow, learn, explore and play.

Pal Design Group opted for low-maintenance, hard-wearing and long-lasting materials such as rubber, laminate and timber. The durable quality of these materials allow it to withstand not only time, but as well as the daily use of young children who are bound to play rough with their surroundings.

The aim of NUBO is to avoid the typical clichés of bright colours, plastic toys and computer screens. Instead, a minimalist approach to colour (white, blue, light grey and brown) and low-maintenance materials (rubber, laminate and timber) have created a visually subdued environment as a basis for creativity, learning and curiosity.

‘HANNAE FOREST OF WISDOM’ COMMUNITY CENTRE IN SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA

UNSANGDONG ARCHITECTS.

THE BRIEF.

Unsangdong Architects is a group of architects experimenting with conceptual architecture, connected by the philosphy ‘Design can change the world’, this group of architects collaborate with different fields of design experiences such as architectural design, interior design on various projects such as offices, mixed-use spaces and public spaces. Unsangdong is led by Principal Designer, Jang Yoon Gyoo, who was selected as one of 40 noteworthy international architects by the japanese journal ‘10+1’ in 2001.

Hannae Forest of Wisdom acts as a community space where people of all ages can come together. The project began when Nowon District Office listened to what the community wanted; they asked for a community library, as well as a children’s nursery and a cafe run by volunteers. Unsangdong Architects were asked to design this once-abandoned patch of turf in Hannae Neighbourhood Park into a community space in which people both young and old can read books, drink coffee, take part in craft classes or simply relax.

S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y.

The goal is to create a space which invites the different ages within the community to come together and have a good time. The location is surrounded by high-density urban builidngs in a relatively poor area. The area lacked a space where kids can get together to learn and play. It lacked a place for the elderly to relax in as well.

Unsangdong Architects have taken advatage of the natural environment. Floor-to-ceiling windows along with skylights overhead invite natural lighting into the space. Winter months in Korea are particularly cold, adding sunlight will naturally warm the space while reducing energy consumption.

The material palette is kept fresh, simple and clean. Natural woods line the floor and ceiling, walls are kept white to allow natural light to bounce off and add brightness to the space, and a slight pop of green in the furnishing. The result is a series of spaces that feel cosy and approachable.

HOW CAN ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY HELP?

Animal assisted therapy refers to various services using animals to help people with specific physical or mental health conditions.

Often therapy dogs are used to treat people with mental health disorders, adhd, autism and more.

The type of therapy depends on the condition and the type of aid that a person needs.

•

Some examples include: providing comfort and reducing levels of pain, improving movement or motor skills, developing social or behavioural skills and increasing motivation toward activities such as exercise or interacting with others

These therapy dogs are trained to provide affection, comfort and support to people and this aims to improve a person’s social, cognitive and emotional functioning.

Animal therapy builds on a concept called the human-animal bond, by interacting with a friendly animal, a bond is formed and can help the person in several ways.

The waiting space is situated next to the reception and is designed to provide comfort for all ages. The sofa set was specifically chosen because of its soft edges and the poufs were chosen to provide children with comforting seating.

The quiet space consists of the ‘oto hugging chair’ designed by Audrain Alexa.

This chair is designed specifically for people on the autism spectrum. The chair is mechanical, once the user is seated, they can press a button which tightens the walls around the body, giving this comforting sensation of a hug.

The terrace is opened to the community, it is a space designed to encourage social interaction.

On the terrace, there is a gated dog park with a water feature and a tree obstacle for the dogs as well as a sandpit section for children that is equipped with swing set.
