CONCEPT
Recontextualising 90s gabber culture and sportswear archetypes, “SPEEED” is a collection that encapsulates the rebellious spirit and distinctive aesthetic of these iconic cultures. The hardcore techno and acid house music blend, which originated in Rotterdam, rose to prominence in the Netherlands during the 1990s.
The collection pays homage to gabber’s raw energy and distinctive style codes. Oversized silhouettes dominate, echoing the influence of workwear and military attire favoured by gabber enthusiasts. In order to dance more freely at raves, the sportswear aesthetic of tracksuits and sneakers was embraced in the scene. The Upcycled Gabber Maxi Dress serves as the hero for the collection, and adapts these codes into a runway ready garment that manipulates ideas of street ready yet sophistication.
Fabrics are chosen for their durability and comfort. Technical materials such as nylon, polyester, and performance cottons are utilised alongside premium wools that merges functionality with luxury. Additionally, the use of upcycling within the collection keeps sustainability in mind and reduces waste in our world, for example running shoes turned into garments.
Colour plays a pivotal role, drawing from the contrasts and bold palettes synonymous with events and tracksuits. A primary-based palette dominates. Vibrant hues are mixed with grayscale tones, underscoring the subculture’s dark and edgy undertones. This is reflected in original print designs seen across the collection.
Music has always been apart of my life. This collection reflects on my experiences with hardcore music and the underground rave scene. Going to raves, listening to EDM, and enjoying the expression has been apart of my life for years. Bringing these concepts into a collection.
In essence, the collection not only celebrates the visual and sartorial legacy of 90s gabber and underground rave scene, but also reinterprets it through a contemporary lens. It embodies the subculture’s enduring influence on street fashion, music, and youth culture, offering a nostalgic yet forward-thinking perspective on rebellious style.
