For Aphrodite...
For this collection I wanted to convey the story of the Greek statues by aiming to achieve a sense of elegance and beauty. The bamboo sateen creates a hypnotising flow of movement that mimics the art and thematic feeling of the masterpieces. Capturing the art pieces that have aged over time by the use of negative space, in contrast with the draping and smooth silhouettes mimics the timeless effect.

The ethos of this collection is aimed at like minded buyers in an age range of 18-40 who are conscious about the brands they are supporting. The hero piece of the collection is aimed for special events, ideally celebrities, to market and promote sustainability within the industry. The rest of the collection is marketed at women who want to celebrate femininity and are conscious of the impact they are having on their carbon footprint. . . . .

Throughout my collection mixing ethical and sustainable textile sources with recycling garments eliminates waste and carbon emissions the collection supports.
“More than $500 billion of value is lost every year due to clothing underutilisation and the lack of recycling” (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017) A zero-waste collection was achieved by melting any plastic used in the process of this collection into buttons and boning. In addition the utilisation of clean bamboo sateen which is made out of a complete cradle to cradle zero waste, zero emissions company “Ettitide”. The exposed boning parts of the garment in contrast with the draping silhouettes create a comparison to the authentic statues that have eroded over time. This comparison of hard materials creates organic movement silhouettes. Using the minimal scraps leftover of the collection used to create quilting to provide installation and warmth with materials that already exist within the project. Furthermore, creating vegan leather out of a kombucha recipe and researching suitable biochemical materials to encourage low impact resources. Realising that the fashion industry has a very known “green wash” habit that masks the unsustainable practices within the industry. Although there have been some great innovations as designers we need to look at the impact the industry is creating itself and start making changes. This can be achieved by recycling the waste produced rather than “green washing” other waste products that may be easier to market and more obtainable.
By researching bio based materials, recycling initiatives and compostable fibres zero-waste has been achieved. The process consisted of recycling cotton reels and moulding the melted plastic into signature buttons and boning. In addition, the utilisation of clean bamboo sateen, which was sourced from a complete cradle to cradle zero waste company “Ettitide” contributes to the goal of zero emissions. The exposed boning parts of the garment in contrast with the draping silhouettes, creates a comparison to the authentic statues that have eroded over time; the imitation of hard materials in this collection creates organic moving silhouettes and it also uses the minimal scraps leftover. Furthermore, creating vegan leather out of a kombucha recipe and researching sustainable biochemical materials encourages low impact resources, compensating for the fact that the fashion industry has a very known “green wash” habit that masks the unsustainable practices within it .
