PROJECT STATEMENT The ‘Rust & Nostalgia’ Collection is inspired by the narrative of my own early life and honours those rich memories of my childhood.

I spent a great deal of my time working on the family farm with my dad, his checked hankerchiefs became iconic to him. I also remember the textures, the intricate cordlike patterns carved in the trees by insects, the layers of dust that accumulated on rusted machinery and the dynamic nature and strength of spirit that is required to work in the Australian elements on a daily basis.

Natural, textural fabrications take precedece in this collection — having helped farm and supply the raw materials which are used to produce these fabrications that I love to work with – it has fostered a special link between agriculture and textiles in a real and personal way which I continue to hold closely. The collection revels in a rich earthy colour palette with subtle touches of vibrancy within the palette to bring a contemporary edge.

The garments deconstruct and augment traditional symbols of the outback and bushman workwear. It plays on the notions of utilty, functionality, the use of organic deisgn line, and features an eco-dyeing technique which uses naturally occurring rust to stain/print fabrics. The use of extensive design detail, innovative fabrications, and use of unusual fastenings and openings work holistically to elevate the collection. The garments are diversely designed – layerable and interchangeable with detachable components for ultimate wearbility; and the general use of over-sized silhouette also offers a level of gender neutrality.

I’ve reflected on my own heritage for inspiration and to inform this collection, it is founded upon verstaility and relevancy, embracing the state of self-reflection in which many of us around the world currently find ourselves and seeks to carve out the importance of the fashion industry working towards a united positive and sustainable goal for our future.
