With an aesthetic led by The Butter Room’s ‘romantic vintage’ brand and a romantic spin on Grandma’s house, The Tulip Room is eclectic meets whimsy meets Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle. These design inspirations are evident in the central courtyard, filled with natural light, glass blocks, and an assortment of old and new furniture. Perfect for a couple looking for their next date spot, a student seeking a change of scenery, or an influencer needing their next viral post, this cafe and florist provides a Korean-inspired menu and beautiful buds to take home. CLIENT: THE BUTT E R ROOM 8

The Butter Room is a Melbourne based cafe run by Hong Kim, and his wife, Ara Cho. They want to open up a cafe in Sydney in collaboration with Dust Flowers and the Colourblind Florist.

Maintaining their ‘romantic vintage’ aesthetic and brand, they aim to put a fresher spin on their Sydney cafe to create a space that can be advertised as a date spot and study spot, as well as be deemed ‘pinterest worthy’. It must intrigue and attract the casual passerby, and entice them to eat, buy a bouquet, then tell their friends or Instagram followers about their experience.

Their cafe in Melbourne is inspired

by Korean self service cafes and has a Korean cuisine, the bestsellers being

lava pandoro, injeolmi buns, and the matcha drinks. Offering a cuisine that is currently popular on social media, as well as having an aesthetic that is in line with contemporary tastes, they believe that they will find success in Sydney.

In Melbourne, they have a small dining area that seats less than 30 people. The only decor in this space is a mirror and framed fabrics that are hung on a wall that has wooden panelling on the bottom half and yellow paint on the top, the wood bringing in the cozy residential feel. LED lights are the only lighting present in the site aside from the natural light allowed in through the windows. Gingham tablecloths are placed on the tables and are decorated

with yellow flowers as the centerpiece.

In the self serve/food display area, the food is placed on open shelving, and cute pop culture decorations such as minion statues and art figurines are on the highest shelf, emphasising the homey feel with decor that isn’t typical of most cafes.

For their Sydney space, they wish to seat more people and incorporate more florals while maintaining a comfortable residential aesthetic that doesn’t stray far from their current branding. They are inspired by the tall ceilings in some areas of the site and wish to create interest with those existing site features.

Located at -33.884064, 151.210312, this building has a lot plan number of 100/-/ DP1069095, and has a size of 559 metres squared. The building is under the Council of the City of Sydney and follows the Sydney LEP and DCP. It’s a mixed use building made of bricks, plaster, glass, and wrought iron.

The building is climate zone 5. Other factors in the environment include minimal overshadowing from adjacent taller buildings and large trees. Buildings within proximity of the site are hotels, apartment buildings, commercial buildings, as well as offices. The crowds commuting to and from these buildings are one of the main sources of noise, as well as cars from Foveaux St There is a corner positioning with 3 and Belmore St. This is in addition to trains street frontages and it has a category and construction from Central Station.

Behind the view of the South-West display window, the bouquet prep is where customers bring their flowers to wrap up after they dine and before they leave. If they are here for only flowers, they don’t have to travel far.

More suited to laid back guests, this space is comfortable and adaptable, allowing customers to rest, dine, or study. Natural light floods through a long window where home goods and florals are displayed.

An assortment of tasty desserts, colourful foliage, and manned by friendly staff, you’ll be swiftly provided for. The display is wide and alluring. Smell the air... just like home, isn’t it?

Having all the necessities such as a toilet, sink, and mirror, this bathroom suits all accessibility levels. Sunlight comes through via a sun tunnel.

You’ll feel refreshed and rejuvinated after leaving here.

Making use of the previous kitchen, skilled chefs cook and bake fresh goods for the day alongside florists who prep flowers behind the scenes.

The space has plenty of storage and light for the required tasks.

Lured in by the sound of running water, you’re greeted with a central floral arrangement and a bright, lush space. Here, the dining space is minimal to showcase the floral arrangements.

This space has a high ceiling that is occupied by glass chandeliers. With access to natural light from all around, the central round table is suitable for a large group or customers looking to meet new people.

As the largest dining space, this area can seat the most customers, but this does not lessen the comfort or sense of home. Modules for bouquets and plants line the walls that are decorated with antiques and treasures.

Welcome to The Tulip Room. Step away from the bustle of Sydney and into, not another world, but a place where plants and people are nourished and given that little bit of tender loving care that isn’t always present in other spaces.

Perfect for a couple looking for their next date spot, a student seeking a change of scenery, or an influencer needing their next viral post, this cafe and florist provides a Korean inspired menu and beautiful buds for you to take home.

The menu consists of familiar foods to the Australian palette such as scones, croissants, baguettes, and brownies, but also offers pandoro, soboru, bbang, and canelé. Flowers will be provided by Dust Flowers, with installations by the Colourblind Florist.

The Tulip Room is my chosen focus for my signature project as it brings together things that I enjoy: flowers, food, and people. I believe that there are places that can contain and nurture joy and love, and these places often have nature and nourishment, things that are scientifically backed to improve a person’s wellbeing. Placing this cafe in one of the busiest parts of Sydney’s CBD, I want to design a space that uplifts those that pass by and gives people energy to go about their day. The addition of a florist is also so that people are encouraged to take home a piece of the ambience and energy and bring it to their homes to act as a reminder of the beauty that is possible in this world.

COLVIN FLORIST Designer: Roman Izquierdo Bouldstridge Location: Barcelona, Spain Area: 123 m squared Date: 2019

This florist encourages visitors to interact with flowers and their environment in a new way. This is done through a multitude of methods, the first being the decision to have the walls, floor, and ceiling–– the vessel for the shop–– in all white.

This visually creates a larger space and shifts the focus from the shop itself to its furniture and the product, the flowers. These flowers are arranged on plinths around trees, occurring more around central areas, to mimic the look of a flower field where customers can browse and wander amongst the flowers themselves. Through this, a new environment is brought into the city where it is located and urges customers to explore and consider the natural environment in which they are brought into.

The minimal material palette further highlights the product and encourages interaction, where the same wood is used for the plinths, doors, and to outline window frames. This lack of variation in colour and materiality is another factor that brings customers to look at the brightness of the flowers and indoor trees themselves. Further

details such as the consistency of the vases the flowers are in emphasises the flowers as the sole product while maintaining the minimalist style of the store as a whole.

Boundaries of what is man-made and what is natural is questioned in this interior, pillars standing amongst trees and man-made plinths made of the natural wood material. Rather than creating an interior to be taken at face value, design choices What I like about this space is its dedication to asserting the flowers as the main focal point.

It’s a unique layout that will surprise customers from the very second they walk in, and it will retain their interest through to the purchasing period. This intriguing interior further prompts customers to share the store with their friends, family, or social media following, consequently doing the marketing for the store. Interest and popularity on social media is important within today’s society and it’s one of the goals I have for my florist/cafe.

MON PARNA SSE Designer: Canobardin Location: Madrid, Spain Area: 61 m squared Date: 2021 The aim of this project was to emulate French gardens and flower markets, and entice customers through intriguing and captivating interior design. The inspiration is evident in the creation of scenographies with less than a half of the height of the space being made to look like the sky, the reliance on solely indirect, ambient LED lighting, and the flowers and plants below arranged to appear like hedges. This hedge appearance is achieved with modules made of phenolic compact. They have holes which allow for a variety of things to be inserted or hung from them such as shelves and bars, granting the employees the ability to arrange and rearrange the various plants and flowers. This flexibility shapes the idea that the store is a changing, natural environment, the seasonal flowers and plants that come and go further aiding this concept.

Longevity of the store is an additional feature of the flexible set up as when compared to stores with a strict layout, modular set ups encourage more creativity and are able to suit changing consumer habits and shopping patterns.

Sustainable design is also visible in the use of a floor to ceiling mirror to enhance natural light.

This mirror is placed at the end of the garden and has the bonus advantage of making the space look larger and intriguing possible customers so that they may come in and shop. As well as the mirror on the wall, pillars are wrapped with mirrors to hide the intrusions and help spread light within the store. The air quality is also high as a natural consequence of keeping plants within a room.

Additionally, the material choice of plywood and phenolic compact is a sustainable choice for their resistances (impact, wear, chemical), strength, and stability. These durable products ensure that they don’t need to be replaced further into the future.

The ambience of the store is similar to what I want to achieve with my own project where you are transported into a beautiful outdoor scene.

The openness and airy environment that captures the curiosity of the passerby is something that I intend to replicate.

TORI ’S Designer: Ratchakorn (Nahm) Kitcharoen Location: Victoria, Australia Date: 2021

Hidden in an alleyway, Tori’s is an Asian inspired cafe with a cozy interior and food that has been catered to the tastes of the Thai chefs. The interior is eclectic with a vintage feel, described as ‘grandma’s lounge room’ by Malesovas in Broadsheet. With no designer mentioned, Nahm, the manager states, ‘we could fit more tables, but we’re trying to keep it cozy’, prioritising aesthetic and ambience over seated customers. Despite the lack of seats, Tori’s is still accessible, wheelchair users being considered at the entrance where the stairs can convert into a wheelchair lift–– the only way into the store.

The difference in furniture creates interest within a minimalist colour palette as well as the ‘grandma’s lounge room’ vibe, the furniture choices appearing like they’ve been collected over time. This is complemented by the vintage decor made up of tassel lampshades, a piano, old radios, vases, and non-contemporary art in gold frames. This decor is not typical of a current contemporary cafe, so it emphasises the snug atmosphere. However, there are some contemporary aspects within the cafe such as an indent shaped as a rectangle with a rounded end within the wall to frame the serving area and a display of cups.

Upon going up the stairs, you are greeted with the display case of cakes and pastries with the kitchen behind and the seating area to the right. The seating is made up of various sofas, armchairs, and coffee tables. No furniture item is the same, save for the four Flos IC suspension lamps, but they remain cohesive through colour palette and materiality, opting for greens,

This cafe will be a large point of inspiration for my own graduate project as it has the same eclectic, comfortable, homey feel that I intend to create within my own cafe. However, I need to be careful to not lean too into the grandma aesthetic as I want my cafe to be more fresh and contemporary.

THE COLOURBLIND FLORIST The work of the Colourblind Florist, Ben Avery, will be featured in this project to further integrate florals and the natural environment in the interior.

As he is colourblind, his work focuses less on colour, and more on form and shape, creating intriguing natural sculptures that complement the existing space. His work will be in the courtyard, underneath an ulta chaata to beautify it and highlight the courtyard as the central area of the project.

Previously, he has worked on installations for Armadillo, Glenfiddich, a wedding, and New York Times. His work consists mostly of foliage and stones to create form, as in his Armadillo installations where he incorporated large wooden sticks to create a sense of direction and build up height. However, his work for a wedding shows that solely reliant on stones, but is able to create large designs that maintain a sense of grandeur and movement.

Chezqah is a multidisciplinary artist who experiments with ways that express the self and spread the idea of love in all forms. Born in Cebu, Philippines, and now based in Sydney, she is known for her ability in illustration and love of glass blocks. She aims to further cultivate her skills in art and design and explore all creative inspirations in the world. Chezqah is passionate about using her skills in ways that benefit and uplift others around her, being especially motivated to design interiors and create art that encourages positive change and interactions. With a predisposition to creating open spaces and taking advantage of natural light, Chezqah creates works that view the world through rose-tinted glasses.
