CONCEPT STATEMENT
I
have designed a strapless wide-leg denim jumpsuit with a waterproof raglan bishop sleeve cropped jacket in a high contrast black, white, and yellow colour palette using black denim and gold diamond water resistant polyester. I was inspired by historical design elements and the protective clothing used in Formula 1 racing.
Many designers in the recent Autumn/Winter 2021 and Spring/Summer 2022 Ready-to-wear collections used yellow and black high contrast colour palettes as well as denim including Ferrari (S/S), Y/Project (S/S), Sacai (A/W), Angel Chen (A/W), Cong Tri (A/W), and Alexander McQueen (A/W) (Vogue Runway, 2021). In the Autumn/Winter 2021 Couture collections of Christian Dior and Chanel, yellow was also featured as well as many off-the-shoulder and strapless gowns. Ferrari’s debut fashion collection for Spring/Summer 2022 largely influenced my design with its sportswear, protective style stemming from its Formula 1 history (Leitch, 2021). My jumpsuit uses both the denim and strapless trends to create a wide-leg jumpsuit that utilises the key features of denim jeans. The cropped jacket made from water-resistant polyester has a utilitarian, sportswear feel which is contrasted with some of the key recognisable features of the Formula 1 racing suits that protect the drivers (Scarborough, 2020). The modern fabric and sportswear details are juxtaposed with the historical raglan bishop sleeves. My consumer would be Women from the ages of 1830 and it would be sold by high end fashion retailers. The competing international high-end brands would be brands such Ferrari, Off White, Sacai, Cong Tri, and Alexander McQueen.

MATERIAL EXPERIMENTATION This is the texture of the denim jumpsuit. The black denim will have the high contrast of white undulating cord lines to create a grid pattern, and the alternating cutouts will be made to add in the relief of the skin tone.

MATERIAL EXPERIMENTATION
The colour palette and pattern on the denim jumpsuit was inspired by this sample which is my own interpretation of a Piet Mondrian painting. The paper sample translates to the fabric with the black denim base, yellow cord detail lines, and the cutouts to give a neutral relief colour.
