Our new Dior Brand Ambassador, Lady Gaga, is famous for her singing, songwriting, performing and acting careers. Born in New York, March 28, 1986 with the birth-name: Stephani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, she spent her childhood learning, playing and performing music. Since her youth, Lady Gaga has aspired to achieve success through her own independence and has turned down opportunities such as attending New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts - as one of only 20 students in the world to receive the honor of early acceptance - to pursue her own creative journey. This has resulted in chart-topping albums, including her debut album, ‘The Fame’ in 2008. Lady Gaga’s achievements in acting included the nominated for an Oscar for her co-star appearance in ‘A Star Is Born’. In addition to this, Lady Gaga’s on-stage performance is known to be an outlet for her fashion statements. Lady Gaga’s style has always been loud and dramatic with wigs, sunglasses and costumes. As an activist for feminism and support of the LGBTQIA+ community, Lady Gaga’s beliefs are concluded in her statement:

“I would like to be remembered for believing that people are equal”.

The Dior Bee

is a consistent element used in Dior’s brand, found

as a decorative embellishment on handbags and keychains. Christian Dior labelled the ‘bee’ as a symbol of the strength and vigor of his Fashion House and nicknamed the seamstresses after the insect due to their busy work.

Number 8 became Dior’s significant figure. Christian Dior’s superstition led him to find this number in multiple places on many occasions. The number 8 symbolises Dior’s iconic silhouette found in many designs.

d e n i m Dior has utilised denim in many campaigns, marketing a previously known ‘workwear’ fabric as luxe. More recently, Dior has created campaigns featuring women wearing denim; a complete juxtaposition of how denim was used in the past: a durable fabric worn by working-class men. Through these campaigns, there have been models chosen to highlight the combination of feminism and diversity, themes common in Maria Grazia Chiuri’s work. Denim has been styled successfully with neutral coloured backgrounds, simple accessories and Dior luxury handbags to create a ‘luxe’ representation of denim. For Dior, blue is a significant colour evident in Christian Dior’s words, “Among all the colours, navy blue is the only one which can ever compete with black,” from Christian Dior’s 1954 ‘Little Dictionary of Fashion’. Maria Grazia Chiuri echoes Christian Dior’s adoration for this colour in saying that, “It’s nostalgic.

It’s a masculine colour, but it points to so many things”. To Dior, blue is a meaningful colour, representing both nostalgia and more recently, an example of feminism.

maria grazia chiuri Maria Grazia Chiuri, born February 2 1964, Italy, is the current creative director of Dior. Prior to her involvement with Dior, Chiuri worked for 17 years at Valentino, assisting in increasing the revenue of the brand to reach 1 billion dollars by 2015. Chiuri has used feminism as one of her leading themes for designing, empowering women as the themes for designing, empowering women as the first female creative director at Dior. In 2017, Chiuri’s t-shirt design reading “We should all be feminists” walked down the runway for Dior, being a clear representation of her own views on the importance of feminism. Her creative vision for Dior is about youth and self expression, where she has directed Dior towards ready-to-wear t-shirts with slogans relating to freedom and individuality in fashion.

christian Christian Dior was a French couturier, who founded the iconic fashion house ‘Christian Dior’, known for its luxury products. Christian Dior began his design career in selling fashion sketches which led him to working for Magazine Figaro Illustre and was hired as Robert Piguet’s design assistant. After Christian Dior’s sister was imprisoned during WWII, his debut fragrance was named ‘Miss Dior’ as a tribute to her. On December 16, 1946, the ‘Christian Dior’ House was founded and in the year 1947, his first collection was presented. During this year, Dior announced ninety different looks, collectively known as ‘New Look’ which revolutionised the

female silhouette for the next decade which embodied a calf-length, full skirt, a cinched waist and a fuller bust.

Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’, named by Carmel Snow, is considered a hallmark of Dior’s brand which contributed to the evolution of feminine fashion.

The ‘Bar Jacket’ is a contribution to Dior’s focus on the waistline and hourglass silhouette; a garment that is reintroduced every year, each time with a new adaptation. Christian Dior has featured his own superstition in many designs, including Lucky Charms hanging o bags which is an innovative design that embodies an aspect of Dior himself. After his sudden death in 1957, many designers succeeded him.

Lady Gaga: Of course, I am so excited to be here!

Interviewer: So let’s talk about this capsule collection you’ve been working on with Dior. What does it mean to you?

Lady Gaga: Dior’s latest capsule collection means so much to me because I had the privilege of being the face of such a strong message. I adore the androgynous look that Dior has achieved and it completely resonates with everything I believe in. I strongly believe in being loud and proud in whoever you are and the exaggerated designs align with this so perfectly. Clothes are made to represent who you are and everyone deserves that chance.
