Perhaps stemming from Christian Dior’s known love of the colour Navy, denim has become intrinsic to the house of Dior. First introduced by John Galliano in his SS00 RTW collection with the Dior oblique, denim became an iconic hallmark for the house, crossing from its work-wear roots into the realm of luxury. The material has since been adopted by Maria Grazia Chiuri, used in her Spring 2018 RTW collection and beyond.

Christian Dior was a Normandy-born French designer, who always had a penchant for the arts and creative world. Though he didn’t launch his fashion house until he was 41, he juggled many creative pursuits in his early life, having sold sketches and owned an art gallery, designing under Robert Piguet and dressing the wives of Nazi officers to “preserve the fashion industry” throughout the war.

Informed by the nostalgia of his childhood and the fashion of the ‘Belle Epoque’, Dior’s most famous style is his debut ‘New Look’, a term coined to describe the ultimate contrast of the style to the recent war-era and slim silhouettes. It featured mid-calf length, full skirts and a cinched waist with a tight boddice.

It was initially critiqued for its excessive use of fabric, but it soon became a success, bringing the “joy” back to fashion. The house of Dior has since been led by Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranc Ferre, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri.
