CREATIVE DIRECTOR GEORGIA BELL GEORGIA BELL
Georgia Bell is an Art Director, Photographer and Stylist. Before moving to Melbourne to pursue her career in fashion photography, she trained as a special effects makeup artist in London. Following her Bachelor’s degree in Design, she is currently pursuing her Master’s degree at Whitehouse Institute of Design. She is inspired by film, pop culture, music and of course, her creative peers. She is a forward-thinking artist, and loves applying multi-faceted techniques in a creative approach through her photography, styling and art direction. Her work contains underlying narratives that resonates with viewers to capture a sense of satire and playfulness in her imagery through the use of vibrant colour palettes and mixed media techniques.
Design, by nature is unique, interesting, chaotic and beautifully bizarre all layered upon each other. This editorial, inspired by graphic designer, illustrator and photographer Jean-Paul Goude and photographer Tim Walker, explores a clash of colours, texture and movement in the assimilation of photographs and the layering of garments to create an expressive, cohesive body of work showcasing the design aesthetic of Bell. Taking her visual cues from art movements such as dadaism, her passion for cinema, David Lynch in particular and artists such as Jean-Paul Goude and Tim Walker, these elements have worked to build her narrative. Bell creates a high fashion editorial, decontextualised, then reconstructs each photograph into final images. She experimented with
collage, scanning, painting, digital manipulation, and handwritten elements to develop a sense of line and direction within her work. Each print is playful and artistic vision constructed slightly off-centre. “There’s space in the creative world for a broad spectrum of work, We need functional clothes but we need to express ourselves, our personalities, our emotion, our mood – through our dress. And this exhibition is fantasy, yes, but it connects to the real world.” Says Susanna Brown (Baker, 2019), curator of Tim Walkers Victoria & Albert Museum exhibition. This mix of the art and fashion aesthetic is a world I think of as one and the same, and mood I am aiming to evoke in my editorial, Walker has proven success within the industry in this area of blurring boarders.
