Have you had any serious injuries or particularly tough fights?
I’ve been lucky I’ve only been knocked down a couple of times but nothing serious, nothing malicious... usually by boys too.
Right, and are you mostly fighting men?
I train and spar with mostly men, I compete with the women. Theres a lot more girls now then when I first started. Yeah. There’s not many girls. You gotta go out west for the boxing girls. And then they’re really rough. They’re real fighters. You know what I mean? Just different fighting styles.
What’s it like being a woman in such a male-dominated sport? Have you faced stereotypes or biases because of your gender? Honestly within my community everyone is very uplifting and don’t view me any differently because I am a girl. If anything it’s the boys who dont fight at all who see me as a phony.
Have you ever had to use your boxing skills outside of the ring? Yeah in high school there was this guy, and he was trying to get a photo up my skirt so we had a fight in the hallway.
Oh my lord, and who won?
Me bro, he was little, I don’t know why he thought he would win, I’d never have a scrap against a girl, it’s just stupid, but it’s just more for self -defense. Never had to use it though, really, which is good, but knowing that I could defend myself is really good. Yeah, for the men, you can just go to their crotch, but it’s nice to know that I could do something for real.
What changes do you think would help get more women involved in boxing? Knowing that its not that scary and you don’t need to spar of fight. No one’s judgemental and you will feel safer in ubers.
