S E AS O N 2 5 O F W H I T E B I R D H O N O R I N G H I STO RY, LO O K I N G FO RWA R D As White Bird becomes a quarter-century old (and Barney the White Bird enters his mid-30s!), we honor the artists whose legacies inspire us, and spotlight the rising stars whose impact on the dance world is just beginning. We welcome back three of the very first companies White Bird presented - Paul Taylor Dance Company, Parsons Dance, and Trinity Irish Dance Company – the timeless, singular vision of each company’s founder has carried them through the decades, and they continue to break ground today.

PAUL KING AND WALTER JAFFE, GRAHAM COLE, WITH BARNEY

We recognize the companies making up our WE ARE ONE Festival who have established long-lasting commitments to diversity. Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE will perform Brown’s hypnotic new work, The Equality of Night and Day. A.I.M by Kyle Abraham returns with Abraham’s new work, An Untitled Love, co-commissioned by White Bird through our 2020 Barney Prize. Ballet Hispánico illuminates 20th century Argentina through the perspective of Eva “Evita” Perón, the Argentine activist and suffragist.

New to White Bird are Dallas Black Dance Theatre, performing Darrell Grand Moultrie’s acclaimed LIKE WATER, and The TL Collective from Los Angeles, led by the in-demand young choreographer Micaela Taylor. We are thrilled to welcome back choreographers whose unique voices are guiding the future of dance: Caleb Teicher with their dazzling SW!NG OUT and Shay Kuebler’s Radical System Art. MOMIX, always hugely popular, will conclude our 25th season with Alice, bringing the 1865 Lewis Carroll novel to new heights. Please join us as we remember, revel, and dream in dance!

RSA fuses dance, theatre and martial arts with interactive technology and design to create gripping performances. Shay’s newest work, Momentum of Isolation (MOI), was developed in 2019, before the onslaught of COVID-19, but coincidentally reinforces the sense of isolation we all experienced during the pandemic. MOI explores how our digital existence divides us and yet how we find powerful ways to connect with one another. www.radicalsystemart.com

WHITE BIRD LOVES OUR COMMUNITY

Versa-Style Dance Company Workshop, April 2022

White Bird strongly believes that community involvement is as vital as the dance performances we put on Portland’s stages. Here are three ways we demonstrate our active engagement with our diverse neighborhoods and populations of color.

NEST (No Empty Seats Today)

Created in 2002, NEST partners with many non-profit health and human service organizations in Portland. Through generous sponsorships by The Standard and Starseed Foundation, NEST annually provides the clients of our partner organizations with over 500 tickets in prime seats in the form of subscriptions to the Dance Series and unused tickets provided by White Bird subscribers and ticket buyers.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Since 2002, White Bird has served approximately 3000 young people annually with free dance workshops and school performances. The cornerstone of our community engagement is the annual Outreach Project with Portland Public Schools. This comprises a multi-disciplinary curriculum inspired by a dance company White Bird is presenting that culminates in a free student performance at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

COMMISSIONING

Commissioning new dance work is central to White Bird’s mission. Since 1997, White Bird has commissioned 40 works from choreographers in Portland and beyond. The Barney Creative Prize is given annually to a dance artist to create a new work that will appear in a future White Bird season.
