THE VOLUNTEERS OF WHITE BIRD

REINTRODUCING THE PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY

Thank you for joining us as we resume our White Bird Dance Series with tonight’s performance by the Paul Taylor Dance Company. This company holds a special place in the history of White Bird as the very first company we presented. We are honored to present the company again this year, during our 25th Anniversary Season, and to celebrate the ways the company has built upon its own accomplishments over the past several years.

Much has changed within the Paul Taylor Dance Company since the company’s last visit to Portland, in 2017. Paul Taylor, who founded the company and led it as Artistic Director for over 60 years, passed away in 2018. Taylor’s legacy is upheld and expanded by many generations of Paul Taylor Dance Company alumni. Michael Novak, after a decade-long career with the company, was appointed Artistic Director in 2018. Carolyn Adams, who danced with the company for nearly two decades, has recently rejoined the company as Director of Education. Paul Taylor Dance Company continues to serve as a model for engaging dancers in all forms of dance production, throughout their careers.

Both by design and by necessity, Novak’s leadership is carrying the Paul Taylor Dance Company into a new era. Fresh blood is flowing through the company - many talented new dancers have joined since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This new group of dynamic, athletic and brilliant artists complement the broadest repertory in the company’s history. While it continues to steward Taylor’s prodigious body of work, the company is in the process of reimagining itself as an outlet for new choreographic voices. Just last year, the Paul Taylor Dance Company announced Lauren Lovette, former principal dancer with New York City Ballet, as its first Resident Choreographer. We are thrilled to share the company with you again tonight, at this exciting time.

PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY

Founded by cultural icon and legendary dancemaker Paul Taylor, the 16-member Company houses 64 years of Taylor’s unrivaled creativity and over a dozen contemporary commissions. Known for multi-disciplinary collaborations, passionate expression, and thrilling athleticism, the Company has performed in more than 600 cities in 66 countries, representing the United States at arts festivals in more than 40 countries and touring extensively under the aegis of the U.S. Department of State. The Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Michael Novak, continues boldly into the future.

PAUL TAYLOR

Paul Taylor (1930-2018) was one of the most accomplished artists this nation has ever produced. He established the Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1954, serving as both a virtuoso performer and a trailblazing choreographer until 1974, when he turned exclusively to choreography. During his 64-year career as a dance maker, Mr. Taylor helped define and shape the home-grown American art of modern dance through a matchless repertoire of 147 works with an extraordinary range of subject matter. In 2015 he established Paul Taylor American Modern Dance with the goal of creating an institutional home for modern dance at New York’s Lincoln Center. In addition to presenting Mr. Taylor’s works, PTAMD presents iconic works by great modern choreographers of the past and present, and commissions the dance makers of the 21st Century to work with the Taylor Company, thereby helping to ensure the future of the art form.

MICHAEL NOVAK

Michael Novak, a critically acclaimed Paul Taylor dancer from 2010 to 2019, became the second Artistic Director in the history of the Paul Taylor Dance Foundation in September 2018, having been chosen by Mr. Taylor to succeed him upon his death. Under Novak’s direction, the Paul Taylor Dance Company continues to be one of the world’s premier dance companies, with robust domestic and international touring; an ever-expanding repertory that includes the Taylor canon, historical masterpieces, and works he commissions; an annual engagement at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts; and several education programs to inspire the next generation of dancers and dance advocates. Raised in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, Novak is an alumnus of Columbia University’s School of General Studies, where he received his BA in Dance magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He was the Keynote Speaker for the Class of 2020.

ABOUT WHITE BIRD

Our Values

Excellence in Performance

Diversity in Movement

Accessibility and Inclusiveness

Generosity of Spirit

Dedication to Community

Fiscal Responsibility

Our Equity Commitment

White Bird believes in the transformative power of movement and its capability to uplift, inspire, and unite. Historically, institutionalized performing arts were built within a system of ingrained racism, sexism, ableism, ageism, and transphobia, with the result being a field that does not prioritize the voices of marginalized groups. Our commitment is to break down these structures and to foster a community that not only represents a diverse range of individuals, but gives equal access and value to their voices.

The entire staff and board at White Bird understand that systemic social norms are inherently biased. We acknowledge the unique nuances between equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and recognize the added complexities of addressing these concepts in a historically oppressive region such as Oregon. Our vision is an ecosystem where the power of the arts is able to impact and inspire all communities, while simultaneously uniting each individual in a shared human experience.
