In Washington D.C., a black-granite wall exists, 493.5 feet long, with 58,318 names etched into it. It is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which the National Parks Service maintains, 1,104 miles away from White Bear Lake.

The first week of August, a similar wall, 375 feet long, with the same 58,318 names etched into it, will come to Polar Lakes Park

in White Bear Township. It is The Wall That Heals, a Vietnam Veterans Memorial replica and mobile education center.

According to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund website, The Wall That Heals gets its name from the healing process veterans can find by seeing the memorial in their own communities, among their own friends and family.

VFW Fourth District Commander Gary Carlberg remembered the cold response Vietnam veterans

received when they came back to America.

“I had friends whose brothers who came home injured, mentally, physically, or didn’t come home at all. (Because of) the way that America treated the Vietnam vets, the Vietnam vets made sure that never happened to my group,” Carlberg said. “When I deployed to the Middle East, the VFWs and (American) Legions had welcome

Conservation district discusses possible wake boat regulations

The White Bear Lake Conservation District has yet to take a position on whether wake boats should be restricted to certain areas of the lake.

Washington County recently hosted a webinar along with experts from the University of Minnesota and the Forest Lake Comfort Lake Watershed District to discuss wake boats and an ongoing study led by the U of M. Board Chair Bryan DeSmet said Washington County has since sent out a map of White Bear Lake that meets the study’s recommended operating criteria.

“I think that the board at some point will likely have to take a position on wake boats. I’m not sure when that will happen, but I think it is something that we should all be thinking about and starting to get ourselves informed the best we can,” DeSmet said.

Jim Faulkner, has been working with the business owners to obtain the proper permits and licenses.

Faulkner stated that he recently received confirmation that the license application is in queue for a final review sometime in the next 60 to 90 days. “We understood from the very beginning this could take two to three years,” he said. “Retailers are opening but having great difficulty getting product because they haven’t approved us growers yet.”

• A newly approved CUP will allow Connexus Energy to upgrade a utility substation located at 0 Centerville Road (which has been formally changed to 5898 Centerville Road).

Erica Schmidt, a representative of Connexus Energy, explained that the upgrades will improve the substation’s efficiency, and there will be no disruption in service due to this activity.

• A minor subdivision and permitted use standards (PUS) amendment approved by the town board will allow TecWeigh, located at 1201 Birch Lake Blvd N, to add an 11,165-squarefoot warehouse onto its business.

This requires two commonly owned parcels to be consolidated. Additional easement area will be added on top of the existing drainage and utility easement.

• The Town Board accepted an offer on a vacant property located at Lakewood Avenue and Stacker Blvd. in the amount of $131,000 and directed town staff to execute a purchase agreement.

• Township residents are invited to bring their thoughts and expertise to open positions on town commissions.

The Economic Development Advisory Board, Planning Commission and Park Board still have room for new members of the community to join; application materials can be found on the White Bear Township website.

• At least one resident has expressed concern about the damage to the pavement on Oakmede Lane following recent road work. Town Supervisor Ed Prudhon said that the township will fully assess the road condition once excess gravel is swept off in the coming weeks.

The White Bear Town Board next meets at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at Heritage Hall, 4200 Otter Lake Road.

CORRECTION

• Carter Johnson, publisher of the White Bear Press, appeared before the board to provide a statement correcting an erroneous article about the township’s recent resolution related to its fire services agreement with the city of White Bear Lake.

“I value Press Publications as our local newspaper,” responded Board Supervisor Steve Ruzek. “I think it’s important that the local paper cover our area.”

• Albert “Trey” Spille III will join the town Utility Commission and Economic Development Advisory Board (EDAB) to fill unexpired terms until April 30, 2027. He will not fill an unexpired term on the Planning Commission, as understood in error at a previous Town Board meeting.

• The public works building on Hammond Road is due for an update. The building was originally constructed in 1988 and remodeled in 2005 and now needs some updates to best accommodate department staff and operations. This remodel is meant to address safety and energy efficiency concerns and also create more suitable office and meeting spaces, said Town Engineer Larry Poppler. The Town Board has approved a contract with Oertel Architects to design the building upgrades for a not-to-exceed cost of $353,673. The total project cost including design and construction is projected at $4.4 million. Poppler estimated a final design may be ready

by January 2027. Board Supervisor Beth Artner clarified that the funds for this project have already been dedicated and will not have an impact on the tax levy.

• A cannabis microbusiness at 2340 County Road J is a little closer to switching on the grow lights with the Town Board’s approval of a conditional use permit (CUP). This business will cultivate and process cannabis in an indoor facility, and there will be no retail sales or cannabis use onsite. The CUP was already approved by the Town Board in 2025 and then extended by another six months but expires if the permitted activity does not take place within six months of approval.

The applicant has not yet been able to open the business as the process of obtaining a license from the state Office of Cannabis Management is still in progress. The property owner,

Summer traditions

s anyone else in disbelief that July is almost over and August is right around the corner?

Why is it that every year I feel like summer just goes by faster and faster?

Perhaps it’s just because that’s what happens when you get older. I will celebrate another birthday this week.

I always look forward to July because it’s the heart of summer, and not only do I have my birthday to look forward to, but I have vacation too.

It has been a tradition in my family to go to Wisconsin Dells every year, usually around the end of July or the beginning of August. I always look forward to chilling by the pool, going down waterslides, riding on the infamous Original Wisconsin Ducks and eating pizza at Moose Jaw. I will always miss going to see the Tommy Bartlett show, which shutdown in 2020. Even though a few of the traditions have changed over the years, Shannon’s memories and excitement of Shenanigans the visiting The Dells never have.

Now that my son is 3 years old, Shannon it really brings back the magic Granholm of The Dells. It’s been so fun to watch him make memories there just like I have all these years.

Hopefully, when you read this, I am on lap 80 of the lazy river, floating around and soaking up the sunshine.

Summer is going by too fast, so be sure to enjoy it while you can. We still have some summer traditions ahead, like Blue Heron Days, Vadnais Heights Days and White Bear Township Day. Speaking of summer traditions, another annual favorite is our Readers' Choice Best of the Press Contest, and there's still time to make your voice heard.

The annual contest gives readers the opportunity to recognize the people, businesses and places that define their local experience.

From neighborhood restaurants and small businesses to essential service providers, the contest has grown into a reflection of what residents value most in their communities.

We kicked off the contest in 2021, and since then, it has become a yearly tradition for our communities.

Fields of flowers beckon birds and butterflies

I

n the early spring, the prairie is a barren field, brown and unimpressive. Three-quarters of its biomass is hidden beneath the ground in an intricate network of fibrous roots, fungal mycorrhizae, ant empires, and sleeping skinks. In May, the first green shoots are just beginning to emerge above ground.

By August, the prairie is a sea of flowers and grasses, standing nearly five feet tall and buzzing with birds, bees and wildlife. At first it creeps, then it Movers and leaps.

Prairies once Shakers covered one-third of North America Angie Hong and one-third of the land that is now called Minnesota. Rivaling the African savanna, this sea of grass stretched from Saskatchewan to Texas and was home to deer, elk, antelope, prairie dogs and an estimated 30-60 million bison. For 12,000 years, humans have been part of the prairie as well. Though only 1-4% of the original native prairie remains today, helping hands are spreading seeds and pulling weeds. Piece by piece, the prairie is rising.

If you stop to get a book at the North Branch Library, you will undoubtedly notice the 7,000 acres of beautiful, pollinator-friendly,

native meadow surrounding the parking lot and building. Volunteers and community partners, including Master Gardeners, Pheasants Forever and Minnesota Native Landscapes came together to establish these gardens in 20182019, and they are now mature and absolutely beautiful.

Unlike common garden flowers, native plants tend to have shorter blooming periods that last only a few weeks. While this can come as a surprise to some gardeners, the upside is a dynamic garden that is constantly changing throughout the growing season. For example, visitors to the North Branch Library will currently find yarrow, beardtongue, lupine, wild white indigo, spiderwort and common milkweed in bloom. Later in the summer, these flowers will fade, giving joe pye, black-eyed susans, blazing star and sunflowers a chance to shine.

Ten minutes outside of North Branch, in southeastern Isanti County, Irving & John Anderson County Park is another premier destination to visit restored prairie and commune with nature.

The park encompasses 404 acres of prairie, woods and water, including 1.75 miles of undeveloped shoreline along Horseleg and Hoseshoe Lakes. Isanti Soil and Water Conservation District seeded the original 174 acres of farmland to prairie in 2007 and has provided assistance for other

habitat restoration efforts as well.

As you enter Irving & John Anderson County Park, you’ll be greeted at the edge of the prairie by two, tall, metal sandhill cranes. There is also a children’s natural play area, which is a big crowd favorite with young families. The park supports white tailed deer, turkeys, pheasants, Blanding’s turtles, beaver, red-headed woodpeckers, sandhill cranes and throngs of migratory birds.

A final destination worth visiting is Franconia Sculpture Park, which is located just south of Taylor’s Falls, near the intersection of St Croix Trail and Highway 8.

This 50-acre park was established in 1996 and features more than 100 enormous and fantastical art installations that are situated within a restored prairie with wide, mowed trails.

A free, family-friendly prairie hike will be held 6:30-8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 6, at Franconia Sculpture Park, 29836 St. Croix Trail N., Shafer, and will include a short introduction to gardening with native plants prior to the hike. RSVP at tinyurl.com/franconiahike.

wave by delaying the use of appliances between 4 and 8 p.m. Their request was simple. My answer is even simpler: No. This energy shortage is not the result of consumers suddenly using too much electricity. It is the predictable consequence of years of bad energy policy.

Yes, Minnesota is experiencing hot weather.

Summer happens. Many of Minnesota's highest temperature records were set generations ago.

Heat waves are nothing new. What is new is an electric grid that struggles to meet demand under predictable conditions.

Minnesota's political leaders, aided by Xcel Energy, chose this path. Reliable coal-fired plants were retired before dependable replacement capacity was available. State law has effectively blocked new nuclear power plants for decades.

Billions have been invested in wind and solar generation that depend on favorable weather while reliable backup generation has declined.

Organizations such as the Center of the American Experiment warned for years that these policies would reduce reliability while increasing costs. Those warnings were dismissed. Today, we're told to postpone laundry, delay running the dishwasher and ration electricity.

I pay my electric bill every month expecting electricity to be available whenever I need it — not only when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining.

The purpose of an electric utility is not to train customers to use less electricity because planners failed to provide enough dependable generation.

Its purpose is to deliver reliable, affordable power.

Minnesotans did not create this problem. State government and Xcel Energy did. They made the decisions. They closed the plants. They prioritized political objectives over grid reliability.

I will not be made responsible for solving a crisis I did not create.

If Minnesota wants dependable electricity again, the solution is straightforward: build reliable generation, modernize the grid, embrace advanced nuclear energy and stop pretending conservation campaigns can substitute for sound energy policy.

Electricity should be available on demand.

That's what customers are paying for.

I want to tell the White Bear Press that I appreciated the U.S. flag and Declaration of Independence that was published in the July 1 issue.

It was one of my goals to read the Declaration of Independence, and there it was in the White Bear Press. I did not have to make an effort to find it.

I would like to thank and recognize Scott Bohnen, chair of the 2026 59th annual Manitou Days, and his volunteer team for their leadership and hard work. This year’s "Bears on Blades" theme celebrated 100 years of hockey history by honoring the iconic Hippodrome Ice Arena, showcasing its rich legacy and the important role it has played in the White Bear Lake community for generations. Another thank you to Bianca Fucini, who coordinated the Manitou Days Grande Parade, which was followed by the successful Beach Dance organized by White Bear Lake Rotary and Explore White Bear. Dick Galena also deserves recognition for his longtime leadership as chair of the community volunteer fireworks committee. Although the fireworks were late due to the weather, they were incredible! Many people, including Rick Juba from the City of White Bear Lake, handled the logistics and the coordination with Jim Baxter from MN Pyrotechnics. For 29 years Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band has provided entertainment for this evening — this year was cut short because of the wind and rain blowing right at them.

Skippers Brent Mason and Ben Krupowicz and the White Bear Press team did a phenomenal job with the 19th annual Boat Show, which showcased 47 vintage boats. Marketfest continues to thrive each Thursday through July 30 under Executive Director Laura Lewis. Special thanks to Andy Wietecki and his team from White Bear Lake Public Works who assisted in the setup, takedown and cleanup after the events. Another White Bear Lake summer attraction is the Ski Otters waterskiing show, and because of Kristi Skillings' leadership and her team, this attraction celebrated 30 years! This show continues each Sunday at 6 p.m. through Aug. 23, attracting larger crowds every year.

White Bear Lake is fortunate to have summer events that celebrate our wonderful community.

These traditions are possible because of dedicated leaders and countless hometown volunteers.

Thank you to everyone who gives their time and talent to make these events continue year after year. White Bear Lake rocks! Again, thank you!

And so that whole question of having it have meaning is an ongoing issue. This is because there is a lack of any accountability for any behavior which accentuates the denial of the historic trauma that exists in all of these Indigenous communities because the events and destruction and genocide that occurred is not acknowledged as having occurred. And so, people suffer from the fact that what happened is invisible. And in this era, you have people who say we want to help you, but they lack a depth of understanding of this trauma, of the problem, and become much more on the surface, apologists. And we remain largely unable to fully heal.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS White Bear Lake man receives sentence for deadly hit-and-run Christopher Ronald Olson, 47, of White Bear Lake, has been sentenced to four years in prison for a deadly hit-and-run in 2025 in White Bear Township.

According to court documents, at 4:22 p.m. March 27, officers from the White Bear Lake Police Department, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office and emergency medical personnel responded to Birch Lake Boulevard N. and White Bear Parkway on a report of a motor vehicle collision with a pedestrian. The female pedestrian, 72, died of her injuries at the scene.

Officers spoke to witnesses who stated that a pedestrian was crossing White Bear Parkway on the north side of the intersection in a clearly marked crosswalk, and other vehicles had stopped for her. She was in the middle of the crosswalk when the driver of a Kia Telluride drove through the intersection without slowing or braking, and struck her. The driver of the

Kia did not stop at the scene following the incident.

In a post-Miranda interview, Olson admitted to drinking four shooter bottles of vodka after he finished work. He said he was driving northbound on White Bear Parkway with his cruise control at 40 miles per hour. He said he was not paying attention, and he hit a person crossing the road. He admitted to fleeing the scene.

Olson was sentenced to four years in prison. In addition to court fees, he may have to pay restitution to the victim’s family.

Maplewood woman charged in connection to stabbing Maplewood officer Jowharah Jannah Bilal, 48, of Maplewood has been charged with one count of first-degree attempted murder in the first degree and one count of firstdegree assault in connection with a stabbing incident

outside a Maplewood CVS store during an arrest.

At approximately 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, officers from the Maplewood Police Department were dispatched to the CVS at the intersection of County Road B East and White Bear Avenue in Maplewood in response to a report of a female customer who was allegedly threatening staff and stealing merchandise.

According to the criminal complaint, the officer approached the customer and in the middle of the conversation, she pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed the officer, striking him in the shoulder area.

The woman’s adult son intervened and was able to get the knife from her, but it took more than five officers and multiple uses of an incapacitation device to subdue her.

The officer suffered a 2-inch-wide stab wound to his left shoulder. He was brought to the hospital for treatment and released the next day.

Bilal’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 26.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected calls for service in Birchwood Village, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Dellwood

• Car pieces were reported found on Dellwood Avenue and Peninsula Road June 22. Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies advised the caller that no crashes were reported at that site and that she could discard the pieces.

• A license plate was reported stolen from a vehicle on Apple Orchard Road June 23.

• A motorist was cited June 23 on Highway 244, just north of Tamarack Street, for driving after cancellation.

• Deputies arrested a motorist June 27 on Dellwood Road and Dellwood Avenue for driving after revocation and failure to provide proof of insurance, following a traffic stop for an illegal U-turn.

The driver may have tried to prevent deputies from researching his driving record by showing a passport instead of a driver’s license.

Mahtomedi

• A southbound motorist on I-694 at

Century Avenue was cited at 3:08 a.m., June 21, for driving after revocation.

• Hypodermic needles were reported found June 21 on Wildwood Road. Whether they were for drugs or diabetes is unknown, but they were picked up.

• Vandalism from campers in Katherine Abbott Park in the 1000 block of Lincolntown Avenue was reported overnight June 21-22.

• A suspicious male with blood on his clothing was reported June 22 in Woodland Drive and Century Avenue N. A closer inspection of the stain confirmed it was caulk.

• A Stillwater Road resident reported her boyfriend for borrowing her car June 24 and not returning it. She had questions about taking out a harassment restraining order. Deputies explained the process and how vehicle disputes work because he had been allowed to use the vehicle in the past.

• Theft from motor vehicle was reported June 25 from Wildwood Beach Road. The complainants told deputies they were unsure of the suspect but had recovered some of the property from the vehicle from another male in town.

• In the Case of the Opossumplaying Owl, an injured owl was reported at 11:22 p.m., June 26, near the roadway on Wildwood Road and Lincolntown Avene.

When deputies arrived on scene, the owl was nowhere to be found.

• Multiple vehicle owners who parked in Triangle Park overnight received citations under their windshield wipers from deputies clearing out the lot at 6:31 a.m., June 27, in advance of the Mahtomedi Farmer’s Market making its seasonal debut that morning.

• After receiving a complaint about people camping in a neighboring driveway in the 1000 block of Echo Lake Court at 7:22 a.m., June 27, deputies found the campers, who said they lived at the property and didn’t want to camp in the backyard due to the unacceptable number of mosquitoes.

• Residents in a multi-family dwelling on Wildwood Road on June 27 reported finding a suspicious box that had been in the lobby for two days. It turned out that the box contained vegetables, and another resident took the box to prevent the veggies from going bad.

• After deputies responded to an abandoned 911 call on Wedgewood

Drive June 27, they found everyone OK, but there had been a dispute. A female on scene asked law enforcement to make her husband tell her why he was sending money to other people.

Deputies replied they couldn’t make spouses divulge personal things. The couple separated for the night, and all was peaceful.

Pine Springs

• A driver was cited for several offenses at 11:39 p.m., June 22, on Highway 36 and I-694 by westbound deputies who observed the vehicle fail to maintain a single lane. The driver had no driver’s license or proof of insurance, and a licensed driver arrived to pick up the vehicle.

• A resident in the 3000 block of Long Lake Road phoned early June 24 after seeing deputies leave her driveway to ask why they were there. Deputies on duty researched their records and found that civil papers needed to be filed at that address and coordinated with other deputies to serve the papers later that day.

• Residents in the 3000 block of Long Lake Road on June 26 reported a mailed check that had been altered and cashed.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reported the following selected incidents: • A man was trespassed from an apartment complex in the 1700 block of County Road E July 15.

• An animal bite was reported in the 3700 block of Little Linden Curve July 15.

• A person reported missing in the 1200 block of Gun Club Road July 15 was later found.

• Officers responding to a domestic incident in the 3500 block of Century Avenue July 16 arrested a St. Paul man for an order for protection violation and for drug possession, as approximately 10 grams of suspected methamphetamines were recovered.

• Officers took a report about nonconsensual dissemination of sexual images by the victim's ex's new girlfriend in the 4900 block of Campanaro Lane July 16.

• A noise complaint was reported in the 3900 block of

Hoffman Road July 16.

• Officers responded to a report of a disorderly male in the 1000 block of Highway 96 July 17.

I first met Senator Heather Gustafson in 2022 when she came to meet with the veterans group at my senior living facility. She listed attentively to our concerns, which ranged from quality and access to health care, financial security and housing. She was genuinely

interested in what impacts our lives and when she was elected later that year, one of her initial appointments was to Veterans Affairs Committee.

Veterans are fortunate that Sen. Gustafson serves on this committee. She has worked on numerous bills to help veterans, including expanded access to benefits, strengthening health care infrastructure and recognition of service. Additionally, in the 2026 legislative session, she authored a bill that expanded veteran services that addressed housing, hunger and mental health.

Sen. Gustafson is running for reelection in 2026 to continue to serve our community. I encourage everyone who supports our veterans to recognize the positive impact she has made and will continue to make in the future. Give her your vote.

The city of Dellwood is looking to fill two city council seats as well as the mayor’s seat. Council seats are determined “at large,” meaning that, from the entire field, the top two vote getters win seats. So far, Gregory Boosalis and Brady Ramsay, both incumbents, have filed for council member seats. Similarly, Mike McGill, incumbent, has filed to run for mayor.

The city of Vadnais Heights is looking to fill two city council as well as the mayor’s seat. Council seats are determined “at large,” meaning that, from the entire field, the top two vote getters win seats. So far, Katherine Doll Kane, incumbent; Craig Johnson; Kelly Jozwowski, incumbent; and Patricia Youker have filed to be on the Nov. 3 ballot. Similarly, Mike Krachmer, incumbent, and Greg Urban have filed to run for mayor.

White Bear Township has two supervisor seats up for reelection. Supervisor seats are divided into wards, meaning that each seat is a separate race.

For Seat B, Beth Artner, incumbent, has filed. For Seat C, Steve Ruzek, incumbent, has filed.

Meanwhile, White Bear Lake Area School District has four of its seven seats open for the Nov. 3 election. Voters also determine this race at large. So far, Dan Arcand; Colleen Burquist; Bob Krominga; Amanda McFarlane; Amy Puschinsky; Melissa Roberts; Christina Streiff-Oji, incumbent; and Ryan Vernosh have filed to be on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Mahtomedi School District has three seats open.

I understand the cell phones being used in an emergency, that's acceptable to all. If you are like me, with a 25-minute time limit to bomb-blitz on my 77-year-old lean physique, having to wait sometimes 10-15 minutes for the bench machine to be available is frustrating and inconsiderate for all wanting to use that bench press. I've quit three gyms because cell phone use was not restricted during exercise. Management just doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to lay down the law on cell phone usage while members work out.

If members feel the need to be on their phones while working out, come on management, instead of having a kids’ room, have a chat room where members can burn that cell time up for hours.

WAKE BOATS: Conservation district to continue discussion on possible ordinance in August and other boats and in water that is at least 20 feet deep to reduce shoreline erosion and sediment disturbance.

The researchers examined boatgenerated waves by measuring the maximum height, total energy and maximum power of wake waves produced by recreational boats. Using sensors and data collection hardware, the researchers also measured how the wake waves changed as they moved away from the boats and toward shore.

The findings reveal that waves produced by wake surf boats during wake surfing are not only higher, but they also require a greater distance to decrease to the same height as wake waves from more typical recreational boats. Other findings include: • All powerboats disturb lakebeds.

• Wake boats create stronger turbulence that can suspend sediment and release phosphorus.

• All powerboats, when leisurely cruising, should operate in 10 feet of water.

Board feedback

Director Brian Bonin asked whether the concern stemmed from an increase in the number of wake boats. DeSmet said the issue is how and where boats operate, noting that wake surfing too close to shore or in shallow water can erode shorelines and stir up sediment.

According to DeSmet, the two easterly lobes of the lake seem to meet the criteria established in the study.

“I think as a conservation district, water quality has to be one of our top thoughts. I do hear complaints about the wake boats," Ganz continued, before attributing most of the complaints to anglers who find wake boats a nuisance. "I’m standing up in my boat, and these things are coming 30 feet away from my boat and I’m getting waked out trying to fish.”

Vice Chair Meredith Walburg asked whether the district could share that map from Washington County for educational purposes. DeSmet said he didn’t think there would be a problem with that but wondered whether it would then look like the board was taking an official position on the topic.

Director Mark Wisniewski wanted to know what authority, if any, the district had to regulate wake boats.

DeSmet said at the point that the board takes an official position, it could share that position with the DNR conservation officer and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office. “We could make them aware of the board’s position and ask for their support.

If they see people outside of those bounds, they could at least do a public information stop,” he explained.

Board members were divided over whether to share Washington County's map before adopting an official position. Some said it would simply educate boaters, while others argued it could be viewed as endorsing regulations before White Bear Lake-specific research is available.

Neighbors step outside to strengthen community on Night to Unite

For one evening each summer, driveways become gathering places and culde-sacs become filled with lawn chairs.

Neighbors, who may have spent the past year exchanging little more than a wave, finally have the chance to sit down and talk to each other.

On Tuesday, Aug. 4, that simple idea remains the heart of Night to Unite, as neighborhoods across Anoka, Ramsey and Washington counties prepare to host hundreds of block parties that are designed to bring residents together while also strengthening relationships with law enforcement, firefighters and other public officials.

The annual event has become a long-

standing tradition throughout Minnesota. Circle Pines, Lino Lakes, Shoreview, Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake and dozens of surrounding cities are organizing neighborhood gatherings, registering their events and welcoming visits from police officers, firefighters and local leaders. The goal is straightforward: build stronger neighborhoods before problems arise.

Within the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office contract communities, preparations have been underway for months.

“We’ve actually been planning since February,” said Alicia Ouellette, crime prevention deputy with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office. “We’re getting everything ready from flyers, brochures and educational materials to scheduling visits and helping educate our communi-

As of early July, in Ramsey County alone, approximately 119 neighborhood parties have registered to participate in the event, with officials expecting that number to climb to between 150 and 160 before registration closes.

Deputies, police officers, firefighters, city staff and county officials spend the evening traveling from one gathering to another, answering questions, listening to neighborhood concerns and introducing themselves outside the setting of an emergency call.

“It’s really getting out there and having those small conversations with someone you might not get to talk to all the time,” Ouellette said. “We want to engage with the community and talk about what’s happening in their neighborhoods.”

Rather than selecting a single annual theme, the sheriff’s office tailors educational materials to the needs of individual neighborhoods.

“If a neighborhood has more questions about pedestrian safety than bike safety, we’ll provide those resources,” Ouellette said. “This year we’ve received so many questions about electric bicycles and electric motorcycles that we’re making sure those educational materials are available.”

Ouellette also regularly hears from

first-time hosts who are surprised to discover how many of their neighbors they had never really met until they organized a block party.

“I love hearing when new parties come back the next year,” she said. “People realize there were neighbors they really didn’t know, and afterward they have better conversations and stronger connections within their neighborhood.”

Communities throughout the northeast metro continue to put their own spin on the celebration. Lino Lakes, for example, is once again incorporating its Pack a Backpack school supply drive.

Shoreview residents, meanwhile, can request city barricades for neighborhood block parties.

Residents who are interested in hosting a neighborhood gathering should check with their local police department or sheriff’s office, as registration deadlines vary by community. Even without an official visit, Ouellette said, neighbors should not hesitate to organize their own gathering.

“Even if it’s just pulling something together a week before and seeing who shows up, it’s worth it,” she said. “I have people who have hosted parties for over 26 years,” Ouellette said. “They love bringing in new community members and simply opening the door to say hello.”

Jean Anne Strothman Tews Age 85, passed away on July 21st, 2026, in Mahtomedi, MN. Born February 24th, 1941 to Maurice and Anne Strothman in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jean was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, a committed member of the church of St. John in the Wilderness, White Bear Lake, and a community activist for good government.

Jean is survived by her husband of 62 years, J. Dixon Tews, and by their daughters Jennifer Tews (Bob) Shultz, and SallyJean Tews (David) Penna, and pre-deceased by daughter Anne Marjorie Tews (Christian) Schwab. Also survived by grandchildren Anna Shultz (Wes) Nuhn, Jack Shultz, Abby Shultz, Jorie Schwab, J.D. Schwab, Reggie Schwab, Louis Schwab, Katie Penna, Rocco Penna, and great-grandchildren Maxwell Nuhn, Adeline Nuhn, and Bennett Nuhn. Jean is also survived by her siblings Jack (Barb) Strothman, Chuck (Barb) Strothman, and Lynne (Ron) Pilgrim and their families.

Jean was a graduate of Minneapolis West High School Class of 1959, and received a BA from Wells College, Aurora New York, 1963, and a MA in Library Science from the University of Minnesota, 1964. Jean married J. Dixon Tews in 1964.

Jean was a reference librarian at the University of Minnesota until starting a family. She followed in the footsteps of her suffragist grandmother and great grandmother by becoming heavily involved in the League of Women Voters of Minnesota (LWVMN). She lobbied at the MN state legislature and nationally. She coordinated candidate debates and presided over the organization as the LWVMN State President. She loved her many years as a community volunteer and lobbyist on behalf of the LWVMN. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

She served on the State of Minnesota Judicial Commission for the Tenth Judicial District, was the Director of the Minnesota Center for Women in Government at Hamline University and was an initial member of the MN State Board of Legal Certification. Jean was the recipient of the LWVMN’s Hope Washburn Award for outstanding service and received the Founding Feminist Award from the Ramsey County Women’s Political Caucus.

After her service as LWVMN State President she joined the staff as Development Director, gaining vital skills in fundraising. From that position she later served with great joy as Development Director for the Minnesota Humanities Commission. She coordinated the Power of Three Capital Campaign on behalf of the LWVMN and the Minnesota Women’s Consortium to renovate the Minnesota Women’s Building in St. Paul.

Jean was introduced to a life-long love of sports while growing up in the Minneapolis Kenwood neighborhood along with her three siblings, Jack, Chuck and Lynne. Through pick-up tennis games in Kenwood Park and on to the West High tennis team; learning to ski the hills in Theodore Wirth Park on her Aunt’s old hickory skis with bear trap bindings; and sailboat racing on Lake Calhoun, where she was the Class X Champion. As the years passed, her Class X championship trophy shared shelf space

Jeannette Sharon Anderson Bakke Born on March 16, 1939 to Carl and Edith Anderson in Western Springs, IL. She has an older brother, Howard, and an adopted sister, Joyce. She attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL. She met and married a classmate, Stanley Bakke. They married after graduation on July 22, 1961. Stan was a lieutenant and served two years stateside during the Berlin Crisis. Jeannette taught third grade. In September 1963, Stan started a four-year graduate program at Cornell University. In the fourth year, Jeannette earned a master’s degree and graduated with Stan who earned an MBA and a law degree. They moved to Minneapolis in 1967.

Jeannette taught third grade before working on a PhD. Stan worked as an attorney for ten years before working in finance. Stan retired in 1995. Jeannette taught at Bethel College in the Seminary for many

in the family home with many additional yachting trophies earned over the years by Jean, Dixon, and their daughters. Sailboat racing continued as a great interest through yacht club memberships on Lakes Calhoun, Harriet, and White Bear, as well as through traveling to many other lakes and yacht clubs in the Inland Lakes Yachting Association in Minnesota, Wisconsin and lowa. Skiing also became a special family sport and activity where the family took many trips to challenge the hills of Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as the mountains of Colorado, Utah, and Montana. First the trips included the children, and then the grandchildren.

Jean grew up in the Girl Scouts, participating from Brownies to “Flying Up” to older scouting classes, and continuing all the way through her high school years with her mother as scout leader.

Jean met her husband Dixon during her “Junior Year Abroad” at the University of Minnesota. She took this year off from her studies at Wells College and met Dixon through the Greek Campus Carnival show, “The Return of the Sheik”, performed by the Men of Beta Theta Pi (with Dixon on guitar in the ballyhoo band) and the sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta (with Jean as a harem girl in the inside tent show). Jean and Dixon immediately connected through a mutual interest in sailing and the rest is history! They were married and lived near their C and D boats on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis and then moved to Mahtomedi on White Bear Lake to sail as a team on an M16 and other inland scows on the bigger lake. Many years of good friends at the White Bear Yacht Club followed with participation in tennis and golfing accompanying the sailboat racing and regattas.

Jean and Dixon’s church home has been St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in White Bear Lake. All of their children participated as acolytes, in junior choir, youth group, and playing trumpet for special services on Christmas and Easter.

Dixon helped to lead a search for a new Casavant Frees organ in 2000 while Jean found a calling to establish an endowment fund for the Church as well as the Heritage Society to recognize donors wishing to leave a legacy for St. John’s. All three of the Tews girls were married at St. John’s Church.

In the City of Mahtomedi, Jean enjoyed taking an active role as a community activist and committed feminist. She was a president of the Mahtomedi Club, served on the Mahtomedi Planning Commission, and for many years was a Washington County Election Judge for the City of Mahtomedi.

Jean will be remembered as a kind, caring and loving person. Jean was dedicated to her family, to her community and to advocating for the rights of all citizens of this nation. Most of all, Jean loved her husband of more than 62 years, Dixon, and her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

The one great sadness in her life was the death of daughter Anne at the way-too-young age of fortyfive in 2016. Anne was a talented musician and writer who brought love and laughter to all who knew her.

She was invited to teach in Hong Kong by Simon Lee. The book was translated into Chinese and then Stan and Jeannette went to Hong Kong, China, Singapore, and Malaysia to teach and speak. They have been to Israel and surrounding countries three times.

They have travelled to more than 50 countries, including Australia and New Zealand. For many years, Jeannette did spiritual direction including at Christos Center for Spiritual Formation in Lino Lakes, MN. Stan and Jeannette built their home on Bald Eagle Lake about 12 miles from St. Paul and loved living on the lake. While cleaning stuff out of the garage four of her vertebrae were broken. This resulted in several years of pain and treatment.

This eventually resulted in living in pain until she died on July 2, 2026, only 14 days from their 65th anniversary. Jeannette was ordained at First Baptist Church in White Bear Lake, which is now Eagle Brook Church. Jeannette loved to sing in church choir. Jeannette and Stan started to go to St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi due to their excellent choir. Eventually they became members of St. Andrew’s. Jeannette shared her

James (Jim) Landkamer Age 97, formerly of White Bear Lake, died in Corvallis, Oregon, on July 22, 2026. He was born in Mankato and raised in Minneapolis and Melrose, MA. He attended UW-Madison where is signed up for Naval ROTC and, in his senior year, met the love of his life, Nancy Wilkens.

Upon graduation he served on the destroyer USS Saufley, DDE 465, whose home base was Key West, FL. Nancy joined him there after their marriage in 1951. After three years of service, he joined 3M Company in Minnesota, where he became a product development specialist and worked for 33 years. Jim and Nancy had four children in the 1950s, and settled near Bald Eagle Lake, where the family enjoyed swimming, sailing, and ice skating. They also took many family camping trips in the western U.S. Jim and Nancy retired to Corvallis in 1987, making new friends and continuing to travel. True to his outlook on life, “do good and have fun,” Jim and Nancy supported dozens of nonprofits. Jim loved to play bridge and for 32 years was a volunteer driver for Benton County Dial-A-Bus. Yvonne Astrid Schultz Beloved mother, aunt, and friend, aged 93, passed away on April 12.

Yvonne Schultz was born in Lodz, Poland and spent her young life (from age 7 through her teens) being moved through labor camps during WWII. Miraculously, Yvonne’s mother, father, and sister were reunited at a Red Cross refugee camp in Germany, and within two years all emigrated to Montreal, Canada.

There she began her career as a bank teller before meeting her future husband, Karl Schultz, and moving to Syracuse, New York. Yvonne continued her banking career when the family moved to Minnesota, where she rose up the ranks to Vice President of Consumer Banking at

American National Bank.

While having a great appreciation for travel, Yvonne was just as content at home; she loved entertaining, gardening, knitting, and volunteering at First Presbyterian church. She cherished her church choir friends, her neighbors, and the close relationships she made while her husband, Karl, was in memory care.

Survived by Karl “Andy” Schultz (Elizabeth Huntley), Monica Schultz, her family in Canada: Barbara Patocka, Eva Annett (Peter), Ursula Gobel (Steve), and their children Nadine, Nick, Madelaine, Sophie, Justin, and Lauren, as well as the Huntley clan who adopted her as their own. Predeceased by husband Karl Ernst Schultz, sister Ingrid Violetta Romanowski, and parents Maksymilian and Jadwiga Tomme (formerly Tamme).

Our family would like to convey heartfelt thanks to Attentive Home Care for their superb care, as well as St. Croix Hospice. You made Mom’s last months truly special.

A celebration of life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in White Bear Lake on July 31 at 11 am.

Softball tournament uses growth to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Association From July 30 to Aug. 2, Minnesota Softball will oversee the ninth annual Monsta Championships 12U at Lexington Memorial Park in Circle Pines, Sunrise Park in Lino Lakes, Rice Creek Fields in Shoreview and Otter Lake Elementary School in White Bear Lake. Ninety-six fastpitch softball teams from Minnesota and Wisconsin will compete. This year, Rice Creek Fields will bring back their omelet and dirty soda bars.

Both Lexington Memorial Park and Rice Creek Fields will also host a team parade at 8 p.m.

July 31.

This year, though, the host sites are adding a fundraising element.

Proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association and support Alzheimer’s research and education.

The fundraising idea began after Kim Bye, wife of USA Softball Northern Region JO Commissioner Tom Bye, passed away from Alzheimer’s disease last November.

Tom and Kim became involved with softball when their then-8-yearold daughter Ashley received a postcard from Centennial Lakes Fastpitch. “It said, ‘Ashley, we want you to play softball with us,’” Tom remembered. Ashley went on to play for Mounds View Softball Association and Irondale High School.

child, and we said we’d jump in,” said Centennial Lakes Fastpitch President Pat Mahr. “I’ve known Tom Bye’s wife from probably 30 years ago.”

Speaking about the donation, White Bear Area Fastpitch Association President Josh Oldham said, “For us, it was a no-brainer. It goes to help a good cause … I’ve had people in my family with Alzheimer’s. It would be nice to try and figure out a way to slow it down.”

For Morphew, the fundraiser is indicative of a larger message that club softball teaches.

“I think it’s a great way for the community to come together,” Morphew said. “I feel a lot of barriers and a lot of walls come down, especially in a school district.”

“I was just a dad in the stands, to an assistant coach, to a head coach, to a board member at Mounds View (Softball Association) … then I took over the Tri-County League and then the state,” Tom explained.

“That was another thing my wife always said: ‘You’ve got to learn the word no.’”

Regardless, Kim would attend many of the softball tournaments, even after Ashley aged out. “She was my righthand person forever, ever since my daughter got the little postcard,” Tom said. “She’s been with me to every sporting event, everything we ever did.”

“She always came with him. She was always there,” agreed Tournament Director Amy Morphew. “We are going to ask for a $2 per-person donation, and we’re not going to require it … and all money is going to go to Alzheimer’s Association support in her memory.”

Tom said that Alzheimer’s Association is a great organization. A representative of the organization, at the time unaware of the planned fundraiser, asked about Tom’s well-being after Kim’s passing.

Additionally, Centennial Lakes Fastpitch, Mounds View Softball and White Bear Area Fastpitch Association are donating $500 each to the cause.

“It was a tough time for America,” said White Bear Township Board of Supervisors Chair Ed Prudhon. “It was very difficult for the soldiers coming home. This is such a great deal that they're actually doing this with the wall now. It should have been done right away.”

The township’s Board of Supervisors and staff say they are honored to host The Wall That Heals.

“When they approached us with this, there was absolutely zero hesitation,” added Town Administrator Patrick Christopherson. “We’ve got volunteers from the township as well as the surrounding areas to make this a premier event for us.”

Saturday’s high temperature was tempered by clouds much of the day but a notable increase in dew point was felt. Sunday brought my hottest temperature reading of the summer, 97º. I usually try to open the windows to let in some fresh air but the dew point overnight Sunday and Monday morning made that impossible as the dew point reached 81º.

The air indeed felt thick. The dew point doesn’t get much higher than 80º around here, so it was a rare event. Lucky us. Where do we go from here? We’ll cool somewhat from our run of 90’s but expect some relief toward the end of this forecast period.

“The Welcome Home ceremony is specifically named that — it is the welcome home that Vietnam veterans did not get,” said Hanson.

The Wall will then be on display from Aug. 6-9, with help from volunteers from VFW and Legion posts from White Bear Lake, Roseville and North St. Paul.

will discuss his outlook on life and why the word “Can’t” just isn’t part of his family’s vocabulary. Come hear this amazing young man’s story of dedication, perseverance, and determination at this year’s White Bear Lake Relay For Life on July 31st.

Each year, White Bear Lake residents light luminaries, small white bags with the name of someone lost to cancer or who is fighting, and those luminaries glow against the night sky in testimony to each cancer battle fought.

Relay For Life, started locally by residents Keith & Patty Warner, attracts hundreds of cancer survivors, their caregivers, friends, families, and neighbors to this moving and

fun community event.

The event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and includes live music by Dave Lenz and John Evans, food trucks, Sustainable Safari animals, a bouncy house, and so much more. Please join this army of purple warriors who gather to celebrate, remember, and commit to ending cancer.

If you can’t attend in person, donate a luminary in honor or in memory of someone you love and invite a cancer Survivor to join you.

This year has a Candyland theme: “Unwrap the Cure,” With activities celebrating the classic board game.

When two-time Paralympian Nordic Skier Max Nelson was in elementary school, his teacher asked the class to write a paper on the word “Can’t.” When Max didn’t turn his in, the teacher called Max’s parents, Sharon and Jon. Max’s dad explained to the teacher that “Can’t” isn’t a word they use in the Nelson house. And it’s a good thing.

Max and his dedicated family have been denying the word “can’t” since he was diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic eye disease that caused his retinas to detach and required him to endure ten major surgeries before his third birthday. Even though he lives with significantly impaired vision, it didn’t stop him from living an active life with his twin brother, Jonny, and sisters, McKenzie and Madison. He was such an amazing athlete that he earned a spot on the US team at the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Games.
