Hockey fans in White Bear Lake will have a rare chance to see the women’s professional hockey’s ultimate prize up close. The Minnesota Frost’s Walter Cup — won in an overtime victory this season — will be on display from 2:15 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at the White Bear Sports Center. Among the Minnesota Frost coaching staff is Samantha Hanson, a White Bear Lake native and 2012 graduate of White Bear Lake Area High School, who played a role in the Frost’s championship run. Hanson developed her hockey skills in the White Bear Lake community before playing Division I at the University of North Dakota and later in Sweden’s pro league. The event will include activities both on and off the ice, and is open to the public. It serves as a great opportunity to celebrate hometown talent and the growing excitement around professional women’s hockey in Minnesota.

Women of Today creates community 1 service project at a time BY SHANNON GRANHOLM MANAGING EDITOR

Although the group has been around for decades, many people don’t know it exists. “We fly under the radar,” explained Vadnais Heights resident Angie Dreher, who joined Women of Today 13 years ago. In 1950, a group of dedicated women formed the Mrs. Jaycees of Minnesota with a mission of community service. Several name and organizational changes occurred over the years, and in July 1985, the organization became known as the Minnesota Women of Today. Since that time, Women of Today has grown

White Bear Lake resident Shellie Matthes has been a member of the organization since 2011. She has been involved at the local level, state level and now the national level. She currently serves as the programming vice president of the national organization and is still involved with the local White Bear Lake chapter.
