Contributed A group from the Protez Foundation recently went on an excursion with Bear Boating.
Bear Boating Bear Boating of White Bear Lake is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) group offering boating or fishing excursions to seniors (60+), active duty military, veterans and people with disabilities. Since 2015, Bear Boating has been providing weekday two-hour fishing or sightseeing excursions, on White Bear Lake from June through August. Thanks to donations from individuals and the community, the organization can offer trips free of charge. In 2023, Bear Boating passed the 10,000-passenger threshold. In 2024, the organization offered four trips a day and hosted 1,751 passengers on 251 trips. In 2025, 21 captains and 103 mates completed 225 trips, taking out 1,819 passengers from 97 senior living facilities. Although the 2026 season is still in motion, Bear Boating President Dave Ryan said this year’s unpredictable weather, including
rain, high winds, extreme heat and poor air quality, forced them to cancel approximately 30 trips. “The good news is that we have successfully completed over 100 trips,” he said. Ryan explained that to make the most of their season, they completed routine maintenance originally scheduled for August, in July. “By completing these tasks early, we added a full day back to our schedule, which had been reserved for maintenance, allowing us to run an additional four trips. Currently, every single seat on our schedule is completely booked,” he explained. A highlight this season was the free boat rides the organization offered during the Classic & Vintage Boat Show, an official Manitou Days event. Other highlights include outings with the Special Olympics as well as two trips with wounded Ukrainian soldiers, women and children

through the Protez Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides prosthetics free of charge to Ukrainian children, civilians and soldiers who have lost limbs as a result of the war. Bear Boating has 12 volunteers in non-crew support roles, bringing the total to 135 volunteers. There are no paid staff. Bear Boating’s pontoon can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests and three crew members. They routinely accommodate wheelchairs, and you can find them operating near the city fishing pier on the north side of the VFW. Ryan says the White Bear Lake Senior Center has been a valued partner for many years and assists the nonprofit in scheduling 28 trips this year for individuals and groups of less than six passengers. Fall for White Bear Township Day Celebration’s charm Each summer, every suburb in the northeast metro, one after another, parades a town festival through locals’ calendars. It all stops in mid-August, as families and kids get ready to go back to school. Even though the weather’s still warm, the time for fun is done. White Bear Township missed that memo. Their Township Day Celebration at Polar Lakes Park is in late September. hovering near the first day of autumn. “It’s kind of the last fun thing you get to do before everybody buttons up,” said White Bear Township Town Board Supervisor Beth Artner. “The biggest advantage of having it in mid-September is that the weather is usually always gorgeous,” added Town Supervisor Chair Ed Prudhon. “I can’t even remember the last time we really got rained out … It’s a big hit with the community.” A centralized sense of community is especially important with White Bear Township, which is made up of five, non-contiguous patches of land, which township staff internally call “islands.” Some township residents live near Hugo; presspubs.com
some live near Gem Lake. “It’s an old-fashioned community event where people can meet neighbors, meet local government, hear music and have family fun,” said Town Supervisor Steve Ruzek. Children’s fun includes Polar Lakes Park’s enormous inclusive playground, bounce houses, toucha-truck and a kids’ market, which features dozens of young entrepreneurs. Adults can enjoy the Viking Auto Car Show, a beer garden and Bingo. At 5 p.m., live entertainment starts. “The bands we get for the music are just outstanding,” Prudhon noted. No matter the band, Adam Senarighi, owner and director of operations of Hay Creek Entertainment and former member of the White Bear Lake Fire Department, is there to set up the stage. “As much as I hate it when the kids are running up and down our cable ramps in the middle of the venue, there’s a lot of kids … and they’re having a good time,” Senarighi said. “Looking over the years at the crowds that continue to grow and come, it’s cool to be a part of.” “What’s great about Township
Day is that … people have recognized, ‘This is an event we need to come back to every single year,’” Hay Creek Entertainment’s Production Manager Jeff Willey added, “Adam and I have been in this community all our lives … We’re proud of our community, you know?” Everyone involved with White Bear Township Day, from top to bottom, wants festival goers to end summer with a bang. Naturally, the celebration ends with fireworks at sunset. Because the event is in September, though, fireworks start about 8 p.m. For Artner, that moment is the highlight of the event. “The kids are down there dancing and having a good time, and then it segues into the fireworks, they are just having a ball,” she said. “That would be my favorite thing.” “My favorite thing is the total thing,” said Ruzek. “It’s the people sitting on the lawn enjoying the music. It’s the kids playing on the playground. It’s going to the food or pop-up vendors.” “The town is very proud of the event we put on,” Prudhon said, “and we seem to always have a good turnout.”

For a flavorful start to your day, make a stop at Cajeta Coffee located inside the Avalon Mall. A popular recommendation is the Cajeta Latte, which uses goat's milk caramel. As you explore the rest of the mall, be sure to check out Bad Little Woman Vintage for a throwback shopping experience. Their unique selection of vintage pieces spanning multiple decades is an absolute dream! For physical music connoisseurs, a must-stop is White Bear Lake Records, a cozy shop with a wide catalog spanning decades of music, formats, and listening gear. Co-owner Chris Valenty, who in addition to the Cajeta Coffee and Bad Little Woman Vintage shoutouts, also recommended Manitou Bar and Kitchen not only for the food and drinks, but for the funny bartenders. Now, if you’re in the mood for a history lesson, make sure to visit
the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society. Their gallery of historic preservations and information is extensive, ranging from the famous Yankee Girl Sailboat, all the way to a copy of The Great Gatsby signed by Frances Scott Fitzgerald! There, I spoke with Executive Director Sara Markoe Hanson, who gave some additional recommendations to try, including ice cream at Cup and Cone, the signature Rudytini from Rudy’s Redeye Grill, or a simple walk by the lake. While the city’s attractions are charming enough, know that its residents are no different. Many remarked on the wonderfully supportive community that has consistently worked together to help the greater good. The city’s recent “Heartbeat for Hunger” beach concert supporting the White Bear Area food shelf served as yet another strong example of this community’s values. If your heart hasn’t already been captivated by the beauty of this downtown, don’t let your day end without a short 10 minute drive to Mahtomedi and Willernie, where you can find a stretch of local businesses on the edge of Stillwater

Road. Sharing the cutest decorated building, 350 Degrees Bakery and The Wild Bean are two great places for a sweet afternoon treat! Up the road are some wonderful shops, such as St. Croix Saddlery, a vast horse gear shop, or Warped Records, where in addition to the lovely shop tour, owner Chris Meads and his daughter Georgia recommended a visit to the Mahtomedi Saturday Farmer’s Market and the annual October Punkinmania. As dinner time rolls around, be sure to check out The Dugout Bar, The East Shore Club, or The Wildwood Tavern for some great food and drinks. For a taste of Asia, a hidden gem tucked off the main road is Queen’s Thai Food and Sushi, serving a mouthwatering selection of Thai and Japanese cuisine. To end out the evening, wind down at Willernie Beach, where you can stroll or lounge at the literal White Bear Lake! With so many things to see and do, these 3 cities are the perfect places to spend a day with friends, family, or even just yourself.

Festival of Trees: a winter wonderland indoors From late November through December, amongst the busy sidewalks dressed in holiday style, bustling downtown shoppers can find the most magical scene at the White Bear Lake Armory on Fourth Street— The Festival of Trees. Each year, local businesses and nonprofits donate a themed decorated tree to the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society, who organizes the event. The trees are then arranged and lit, creating a winter wonderland. When Allison Lincoln, community engagement director for WBLAHS, first envisioned Festival of Trees in 2023, she thought 100 people would attend on a Saturday afternoon. Now, the event attracts 3,000 visitors annually, with visiting hours spanning Tuesday through Saturday for an entire month. “I don’t know how it became what it is, but it’s exponentially larger and exponentially more fun,” said Lincoln.
One reason for the growth may be appearances from and photo opportunities with Santa. The Festival of Trees is one of the only Santa events in the state of Minnesota that does not charge admission. As such, many mom groups attend the event with their children. “We love to remain a commodity for the community … so having the community there is always number one,” said Lincoln. “That first year, that’s all I heard from parents coming through: ‘This is the only free event we found. This is incredible. We weren’t going to see Santa this year. It wasn’t in the cards, then this popped up.’” Another reason, Lincoln believes, is the bragging-rights contest for best tree. “The minute you say, ‘There’s an option to vote for your favorite tree,’ the entire community that is connected to a church, to a nonprofit, to a business is coming out, and they are voting.”
20 WHITE BEAR COMMUNITY INSIDER 2026-2027
This, in turn, spurs tree donors to outdo themselves year after year. Lincoln noted that, for their 100th anniversary, the Bald Eagle Women’s Club entered a near30-foot-tall tree. Meanwhile, the Lions club and Rotary club have developed a friendly rivalry. 350 Degrees Bakery submitted a pink tree with cake decor. H20 for Life always does a water-themed tree. Cup and Cone, in place of a star, tops their tree with a giant ice cream cone. Lincoln feels that the true winners are those who attend because they become more aware of the what’s going on in their community. “Sometimes, you don’t even realize that nonprofit was there. You don't even realize that business changed to look like that. They aren't selling olive oil anymore. They're doing more. Or there's a new bakery in town or a new coffee place,” Lincoln said. “We’re just putting a roof over it, you know?” presspubs.com

A taste of home: How Two Silo Winery is cultivating community, 1 glass at a time Drive down the winding roads of Grant and it’s easy to miss that one of the Twin Cities’ most unique wineries sits quietly atop a rolling hillside. But for those who make the turn into Two Silo Winery, the destination quickly becomes about far more than wine. The property, which is 22-acres, was designed with that philosophy in mind. Visitors are greeted by sweeping vineyard views, a hill that invites an afternoon stroll, and a restored wine barn that feels more like a family living room than a traditional tasting room. “We wanted people to come in, get off their phones, have a glass of wine, enjoy a little food and just have conversations,” said Jan Dehnert, whose family founded the winery. “Everything is arranged with couches and chairs instead of tables so people can relax like they’re sitting in their own home.” That sense of comfort extends well beyond the tasting room. Guests can walk through the vineyards, stop at a picnic table overlooking the property, gather with friends in outdoor spaces, or even spend the night in the winery’s farmhouse bed-andbreakfast – all within walking
distance of the vineyard and wine barn. While the setting often surprises first-time visitors, the story behind the winery runs even deeper. Although the Winery officially began planting vines in 2017, the family’s connection to winemaking stretches back generations. Dehnert’s grandfather immigrated from Greece, bringing with him a tradition of home winemaking that became part of family gatherings for decades. “Our family made wine on a very small scale,” Dehnert added. “We’re really the first generation to turn that tradition into a commercial winery.” That heritage still influences the wines produced today. Minnesota may not immediately come to mind as a place made to produce wine, but Two Silo has embraced both the challenge and the opportunity of growing in a colder climate. Regardless, seven estate grape varieties grow on the property, including both red and white cultivars selected for Minnesota conditions. At the same time, the winery carefully sources grapes from California’s Lodi region, Oregon’s Willamette Valley and Washington’s Yakima Valley.
24 WHITE BEAR COMMUNITY INSIDER 2026-2027
The goal isn’t simply to blend wines from different places. It’s to discover combos that highlight Minnesota fruit while creating wines that appeal to a broad range of palates. “We don’t add sugar or try to cover anything up,” Dehnert said. “We want the fruit to speak for itself.” That process requires equal parts science and artistry. Each grape variety is fermented separately before the winery begins months of experimentation, tasting and blending. As the wine ages, the flavors continue to evolve, requiring constant evaluation before a final blend is bottled. “It’s experimentation,” Dehnert said. “There’s science behind making wine, but there’s also an artistic side. You taste, you smell, you keep testing, because the wine changes throughout the year.” That willingness to experiment has allowed the winery to develop an extensive portfolio of nearly 45 labels, many inspired by the property’s history and the family’s heritage. Among Dehnert’s recommendations for first-time visitors are Behind the Barn, a
presspubs.com
popular red blend; Over the Silo; Farmhouse Rosé; and Stavrianos, a crisp white named after her grandfather’s original Greek surname before it was changed to Dehnert upon arriving at Ellis Island. Building the winery, however, has been anything but effortless. Growing grapes in Minnesota means constantly adapting to weather, insects, disease and the countless variables that come with farming. Starting a winery also required building equipment and production capacity piece by piece. “We couldn’t afford everything right away,” Dehnert recalled. “We started with a very old press and bottled one bottle at a time. Now we can bottle six at once. Every year we’ve been able to improve a little.” Looking back, Dehnert says each stage brought its own
challenges, but also its own rewards. “Wine is really a gift,” she said. “It comes from the ground, and when people enjoy it together with friends and family, that’s what makes all the hard work worthwhile.” Community has remained central to that mission. The winery regularly hosts local
events and has made charitable giving an important part of its identity. One of its signature efforts is the annual “Two Brothers” wine, created in support of multiple sclerosis research. Dehnert’s husband lives with MS, and proceeds from every bottle sold help fund the winery’s annual fundraiser, including a community 5K. “We like giving back,” Dehnert stated. “Supporting the community has always been important to us.” For visitors, however, the experience often begins with something much simpler: finding a quiet place to sit, looking out across the vineyards and sharing a conversation over a glass of wine. In a world that rarely slows down, that’s becoming one of Two Silo Winery’s most memorable offerings.

Overview:
The Met Council, established by the state Legislature in 1967, coordinates planning and development within the sevencounty Twin Cities metropolitan area. The council works with local communities to operate the region’s largest bus system, collect and treat wastewater, engage communities and the public in planning for future growth, provide forecasts of the region’s population and household growth, provide affordable housing opportunities, provide planning, acquisitions and funding for a regional system of parks and trails, and provide a framework for decisions and implementation for regional services including aviation, transportation, parks and open space, water quality and water management. Governance: The 17-member Met
Council has 16 members who each represent a geographic district and one chairman, Robin Hutcheson, who serves at-large. They all are appointed by and serve at the pleasure of the governor. The state Senate confirms council member appointments.

White Bear Lake
Mary Nicklawske Mayor
My family and I moved to White Bear Lake in 2009. As a lifelong Minnesotan, it was a dream come true to live in the 'City of Lakes and Legends.' Professionally, I spent 33 years serving individuals of all ages in Blind Rehabilitation Services as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist. My career spanned diverse environments including schools, Blind Rehabilitation Centers, and the Veterans Administration Hospital, where I partnered with clients from all walks of life. Beyond my career, I have dedicated myself to serving others as a volunteer for numerous agencies, schools, and boards of directors. Sports and teamwork have also been central to my life, and I’ve loved sharing that passion by coaching basketball over the years. In the summer, you’ll find me out in our wonderful community walking, running, biking, or swimming. When winter hits, my family jumps at the chance to travel, but we also love staying local to cross-country ski, take winter hikes, or curl up by the fire with a good book. I am deeply honored and excited to serve the community of White Bear Lake over the next four years! presspubs.com

I am a 56-year White Bear Lake resident and graduate of the White Bear Lake public schools and the University of Minnesota. First elected to public office in 1979, at age 21, I served 19.5 years on the White Bear Lake School Board (1979-1988, 19912001) and board chair 1996-2001. Since 2010, I have represented Ward 4 on the City Council; I am council and fill in for the mayor if they are away. In my non-public life, I had a fulfilling 24-year career as a nonprofit executive, working in community and economic development; I also owned/operated a berry farm near Forest Lake for 47 years.
I was elected to the White Bear Lake City Council in 2023 and have served for 2.5 years. I currently serve as the vice chair on the Vadnais Lake Area Water Management Organization (VLAMO) and Northeast Youth and Family Services (NYFS) Board and have previously served on the Planning Commission, Housing Task Force and Ramsey County Library Advisory Board. I’ve lived in White Bear Lake for 23 years and my family includes two adult sons, two dogs and a cat named Hobbes. At my day job as a workforce development manager, I help people with disabilities and other employment barriers build skills and explore career opportunities through education and hands-on experience.
Ellen Gurrola I joined the White Bear Lake City Council in January 2026. Before joining the council, I served on the White Bear Lake Environmental Advisory Commission. My family and I moved to White Bear Lake in 2020. We lived in apartments and townhomes before purchasing our forever home. I was a public school science teacher for 10 years and have worked in the Macalester College Sustainability Office since 2022. My spouse, Ramon, is a Saint Paul Firefighter. We have two children, ages 5 and almost 9, who are passionate about soccer, that’s especially fun for me because I spent many years playing and coaching the sport. As a family, we spend much of our free time with our neighbors and enjoying being outdoors.

White Bear Township Supervisor
White Bear Township Supervisor
I am one of three supervisors elected at large to provide governance to White Bear Township, the largest township by population in the state of Minnesota. Both my wife Mary and I grew up in Minnesota, and we have proudly lived in this township for over 40 years. Our children attended White Bear area public schools as do two of our five grandchildren. Our commitment to this area is strong. In addition to attending the board meetings and executive meetings, I serve as liaison to the Park Board and the Planning Commission, two of the five committees providing citizen input in management of the township. I try always to be mindful of the Mission of the Township: “To provide White Bear Township residents, businesses and visitors with reliable, high quality municipal services while serving as open and responsible stewards of the public trust.” Township government is meant to be driven by citizen participation and the vision for White Bear Township is for the township to be a place our residents are proud to call home. It is a great honor to serve the constituents of White Bear Township.
I’m a 40-year resident of White Bear Township. My husband and I enjoy our neighborhood, especially the wonderful dogs; the lakes and parks for year-round recreation. I have served on the Planning Commission and Economic Advisory Board. This is my first term as a Township Board Supervisor. It’s been a learning experience; I like meeting with residents regarding their concerns, many have great insight to share. In my work career, I was a project manager for commercial construction projects. Great learning experience for all phases of projects, life and common sense.

I have been active in environmental issues, having served on the boards of Parks & Trails Council MN, the Nature Conservancy, Conservation MN and currently as a member of the Clean Water Council representing 800+ cities. Education has also been important to me and I previously served as president of the Century College Foundation. With my wife Mary we raised our family in Mahtomedi where we have lived for almost 40 years. My wife and I enjoy biking, hiking, x-country skiing, traveling, birding and spending time with our family especially our grandchildren.

Mahtomedi
Lilly Melander Council Member
I have had the privilege of serving the Mahtomedi community since being elected to the City Council in 2021. I currently serve as council president and as the council liaison to the Environment Commission. Professionally, I work in state government affairs, partnering with policymakers across the country to support biotechnology and innovation. I also serve as chair of HealthCareMN, a Minnesota nonprofit that supports health care innovation and entrepreneurship. As a longtime Mahtomedi resident, I'm passionate about preserving our city's unique character while planning thoughtfully for its future. Outside of work and city service, you'll likely find me working in the yard, tackling a project around the house, spending time on White Bear Lake, traveling, or walking my Goldendoodle, Bunny.

Jane is committed to listening to residents, fostering collaboration, and helping preserve the welcoming, smalltown character that makes Mahtomedi a special place to live. She is active in local civic and volunteer organizations, including the White Bear Lake Rotary and volunteering with newborns in the NICU at St. John's Hospital.
I have been a Mahtomedi resident for over 30 years. My wife, Michele and I are so grateful to have been able to raise a family in this community. After spending many years on the Mahtomedi Parks commission, I transitioned to the City Council. It has been a learning experience and a great honor to serve Mahtomedi in this capacity. Providing excellent public services while thoughtfully managing tax levies will always be a challenge. Our residents appreciate and support top notch public safety, emergency services and recreational opportunities throughout our city.
