Heart screenings help save young lives

Posters around White Bear’s South Campus gymnasium held a somber reminder of the need for early screening in student athletes. Pictured were young lives taken too soon by sudden and unexpected cardiac arrest. They were there as silent testimonials to the importance of early heart screening.

A foundation called Play for Patrick was responsible for the event last month at the home of the Bears. Started by Mike and Gayle Schoonover after the

loss of their son Patrick, the foundation offers free screenings that include an electrocardiogram or ECG to record electrical signals traveling through the heart, an echocardiogram that uses sound waves to produce images of the heart and a blood pressure check.

Volunteers screened 153 youth at the November event, from not only White Bear Lake, but Mahtomedi, Mounds View and Totino Grace High School. Four were found to have heart defects: one had dilated cardiomyopathy; two had a bicuspid aortic valve and one had a syndrome called

Wolf-Parkinson-White.

Described as significant findings, White Bear Lake firefighter/EMT Steve Engstran said the screening may have saved their lives.

“We found abnormalities that would not have been found in a typical sports physical,” noted Engstran. The White Bear Lake Fire Department (WBLFD) and school district teamed up to bring the lifesaving Play for Patrick program to the high school.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Another venue has been added to the city’s repertoire of rental spaces.

The Boatworks Commons community room is now open to private parties.

Instead of restricting use of the space to nonprofits, the school district and city-sponsored events, City Council agreed to revise the rental policy at its December meeting.

There are restrictions, however.

Private events such as weddings, graduations or holiday parties hosted by residents and businesses are limited to weekdays and weekends before 2 p.m. during peak summer months. Off-season, when the marinas and area restaurants are closed, there will be no restriction. The reason is parking.

According to the new policy, local civic and nonprofit groups can use the room free of charge if there are fewer than 20 attendees. There is a $50 usage fee for larger groups that may involve food or beverage service.

We recognized several years ago that it made sense to pull as much volume out of our waste stream as possible. We began with cardboard and cans; when mixed recycling was introduced we added glass, plastic and paper.

However, even with that we still had a tremendous amount of food and paper waste which has a high water content and adds a lot of weight to the garbage. We had looked at the possibility of contracting with local farmers to dispose of this waste, but that presented several challenges.

About 3 years ago, we had the opportunity to add a compost bin to the mix that handles much of our food waste and eliminates much of the weight. We have cut our garbage expense by about 50% by utilizing the recycling and composting options available to us.

architects build on holiday tradition

This time of year, the Norway House in Minneapolis transforms into a gingerbread (or in Norwegian, pepperkake) wonderland fi lled with spicy versions of familiar sights such as the Target Center, the Stone Arch Bridge and the Minnesota State Fair giant slide.

One of those creations, a replica of the $2.6 million mansion at 828 Summit Ave. in St. Paul, was created by Breta LeVasseur of Hugo (formerly of White Bear Lake) and Penny Birdsall of Wyoming.

Out of the 75 entries in this year’s display, the Summit mansion was selected “Best of St. Paul.”

Gingerbread is a typical feature of the Norwegian holiday. It is not uncommon to fi nd gingerbread cookies, ornaments and houses in offices, stores, homes and schools. Some town residents will even build gingerbread replicas of their city.

For LeVasseur, the tradition dates back to 1951, when her mother made her fi rst gingerbread house. “There has never been a Christmas where I haven’t had a cookie house in my house,” she said. In 1980, she decided to carry on her mother’s tradition by making her fi rst house. For the past 37 years, she has made at least one, and sometimes many, gingerbread houses.

Over the years LeVasseur has sought help from others in her creations, but many people only lasted a short while. Twelve years ago LeVasseur asked her then-neighbor Birdsall if she wanted to give it a try. “We have stuck with it all of these years,” Birdsall said.

It was then that the gingerbread houses, which often looked the same, started to become more unique and elaborate. Stained glass windows began to appear, and the houses grew in size.

Three years ago, the duo started making gingerbread haunted houses for Halloween in addition to making the more traditional winter houses.

The Summit mansion took around 30 hours of work over one weekend to complete. The two recalled staying up as late as midnight and even 3 a.m. on one occasion.

The entire house is edible, with the exception of some of the exterior decorations, such as the cotton used for the smoke coming out of the chimney. The siding is made of fondant, a type of frosting, and the roof is made out of candy. LeVasseur explained each house takes about four batches of cookie dough and four batches of fondant.

Both LeVasseur and Birdsall said the most time-consuming parts of the process are baking, rolling out the dough and cutting out each and every piece individually. The process doesn’t come without pain. Both women have a number of scars on their fi ngers from burns caused by the melted sugar used to glue the house together.

“We have our little bucket of water and ice on the table when we are making them,” Birdsall said.

ried on for the fun of it. Now with the “Best of St. Paul” under their belt, the two are on a mission to enter more contests in the years to come and to keep topping their creations from the previous year.

“I enjoy the challenge. It’s all about how we are going to outdo it next year,” LeVasseur said.

Birdsall added, “It’s fun to get more creative every year, and I enjoy the company. Every time we fi nish a project, the next day we are thinking about what we are going to do the next year.”

W

ith the vast amount of information that is now so readily available at our fingertips, you would think that this would be a golden age of shedding light on the truth about the world around us. Unfortunately, the ease of distributing and accessing information has also made it easier to push innuendo and misinformation — deliberately designed to confuse and deceive — into the news feeds of unsuspecting consumers. It’s gotten to the point that I often don’t know what to believe anymore.

I am personally not comfortable with the idea of someone else, or for that matter an algorithm, deciding what news items are appropriate for me to see on a daily basis. I also Angle of miss the early days of Google when an Internet search could still result View in a serendipitous discovery along with your primary objective.

Paul Dols I received, as a gift, the book “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” a few years ago. Reading it influenced my point of view and altered some of my preconceived notions, but also offered an example of how an author (Michael Pollen) could research a subject without an existing agenda that he was attempting to validate and instead pursue a legitimate inquiry into finding out the truth.

In a rough summary, different sections of the book follow the food chain, including the trajectory from South Dakota pasture to Kansas feedlot of a calf raised for beef, aspects of organic farming and industrial food production and a meal using only ingredients that the author hunted, gathered or grew himself. By following the food chain in a variety of ways, he was able to tangibly illustrate where we are now, but also explain the influences and history of how we got to this point.

If I was to glean a concluding message from the book, it would be that it’s in all of our best interests to become aware of the source of our food and its true cost so we can make healthy, sustainable and informed decisions. I believe the same can be said for the news and information we consume on a daily basis.

It might be because I grew up in an era when television, radio and print media coexisted and have also witnessed and participated in the expansion of news, photo and video distribution opportunities online, but I’m almost always surprised when someone tells me they get their news and information from predominately just one source.

Bill Gates is probably the best-known member of the tech community to comment on the negative societal effects of a phenomenon called filter bubbles, which are defined by Wikipedia as a state of intellectual isolation that can result from personalized searches when a website algorithm selectively guesses what information a user would like to see based on information about the user such as location, past click behavior and search history. As a result, users become separated from information that disagrees with their viewpoints, effectively isolating them in their own cultural or ideological bubbles.

In a 2017 interview on the Quartz Media website, Gates said that technologies like search engine algorithms and social media filters allow you to “go off with like-minded people, so you’re not mixing and sharing and understanding other points of view.”

Because the actions of these filters are not transparent, he and others have stated that this might have serious implications for civic discourse and democracy. Gates did add a hopeful note in the interview, saying that “education is a counterbalance to filter bubbles.”

I personally think that it’s pretty amazing that you can access news and informational websites locally, nationally and around the world. I know it’s a challenge, but I believe we can all benefit from consuming a more diverse and balanced diet of information.

Different dreams for 2018

M

uch of the holiday hubbub is over and it’s time when many of us set our sights on 2018.

While it’s natural to take stock of our lives and decide what we intend to change in the new year, we’re also painfully aware that most resolutions fade away as the daily routine of life overwhelms our good intentions.

Research suggests that most New Year’s resolutions abandoned by Movers and are the end of February.

But don’t let those Shakers statistics keep you Jerry Hromatka from making changes. At Northeast Youth & Family Services we work year round with people who make changes in their lives through consistent actions, big and small. Lasting change can happen. We see it every day.

With that in mind, this coming year I encourage you to dream big, but dream differently. It’s easy to focus on changes we want to make for ourselves and just hope that the world around us will change as well. Many of our country’s problems are too big for any one person to solve so why waste our precious energy trying? Right?

Instead of giving in to apathy, consider the words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa - a survivor of apartheid and an unapologetic optimist: “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that

overwhelm the world.”

This year, dream for both yourself and for the world. Here’s an example: a common New Year’s resolution is to lose weight and eat healthier food. While that is an admirable goal, think about taking it one step further: how can you help others be healthier? Maybe make plans this winter to start a garden in the spring. You’ll have an easy outlet for exercise, quick access to fresh produce and you can donate vegetables to a local food shelf so others can have healthy meals, too. Not a gardener? No problem.

Make a resolution to donate a meal a month to a food shelf or volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Another common resolution is to reduce the time we spend on screens. We can waste hours at home watching what other people are doing in the world. This year, in addition to putting the screens away more often, resolve to get out of the house and start attending community meetings about issues you care about. Or take it one step further and join one of your city’s advisory or planning commissions.

Your voice carries more weight in a meeting than it does in a tweet.

And the biggest hope many of us have as we prepare for the New Year is the desire for more peace.

This too can be a personal and a public goal. As an individual, you can work to make amends with loved ones you’ve hurt or who’ve hurt you. Learning to give, and receive, heartfelt apology is one important step towards personal peace. But add to that goal. What can you do to bring more peace to

your community? Who do you really need to be engaging? Archbishop Tutu has an opinion on that, too: “If you want peace, you don’t talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies.”

Do you consider anyone to be your enemy? If so, why? Quite often people on different ends of the political or religious spectrum have similar dreams for their loved ones and common fears as well. And when we listen to understand and not to convince, we learn that affordable health care, good paying jobs, safety in one’s home and community are human needs that owe no allegiance to any one group.

Speaking to people you oppose face to face, with grace and civility, can break down artificial barriers and eventually create opportunities to work together on common goals.

And we all know the more people work together, the more they can accomplish.

It’s always fun to dream big at this time of year but don’t let your aspirations remain dreams at the end of 2018. This year try doing things that will benefit not just you, but others in your community at the same time. The impact will double your feeling of accomplishment along the way and will increase the likelihood that your dreams will come true.

Protect yourself from credit card skimming

E

ven if you’re choosy about which gas stations you frequent, you can still become a victim of financial thieves that place seamless devices on machines to steal – or ‘skim’ - sensitive financial information. Skimming is a growing problem, and Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota, the Minnesota Department of Commerce and several other local and federal law enforcement agencies say consumers need to remain vigilant to steer clear of this scam which can also lead to identity theft.

In recent years, thieves have increasingly targeted gas pumps to steal credit card data. Skimming devices are placed inside the pump and are undetectable from the outside.

Credit card information can now even be obtained from the skimming device via Bluetooth technology so thieves don’t have to go back to the pump to retrieve stolen card numbers. Many gas stations are taking measures to secure their pumps via tamperresistant security tape and visual

inspections, but to avoid having your financial information stolen, pay inside rather than at the pump. Minnesota’s Department of Commerce is also taking steps to tackle Movers and this problem.

To avoid becoming Shakers a victim of credit card Better Business skimmers: Give it a wiggle Bureau — Skimming devices are often false panels attached to the credit card reader – where you swipe your card. Inspect debit and credit terminals closely. If anything looks damaged or unusual, give it a wiggle. Also watch out for new or suspiciously placed cameras and unusual signage. Don’t hesitate to walk away and if something doesn’t feel right.

Pay inside or pay with cash — Paying inside at gas stations reduces your risk of credit card fraud greatly,

and paying with cash is an even safer approach.

See something, say something — If you notice any suspicious activity (especially someone who is not a station employee or an inspector who is opening up a pump), alert the station attendant.

Keep an eye on your statements — The most vigilant person can still fall victim to skimming, and it’s important to always keep a close eye on your accounts – particularly the itemized breakdown of monthly charges — so that you can report any suspicious activity on your account.

Report fraud immediately – Report any fraudulent activity to your bank or credit card provider as soon as you discover it. Paying with a credit card instead of a debit card, because they offer great protections.

Consumers who think that they’ve been victims of skimming should visit IdentityTheft.gov to report identity theft and develop a recovery plan The FBI investigates a wide variety of credit card fraud schemes to include

Internet-facilitated criminal activity.

If you believe you’ve been a victim of an online fraud scheme, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center is a reliable and convenient reporting mechanism to submit information using the following website: www. ic3.gov/. Consumers can also fi le complaints with the FTC (877-FTCHELP; ftc.gov) If you notice any suspicious activity (especially someone who is not a station employee or an inspector opening up a pump), alert the station attendant or call the MN Department of Commerce’s Weight & Measures Division at 651-539-1555.

People with disabilities have much to offer

Santas spread joy at Christmas dinner

For those who think people with disabilities should be hidden away somewhere, I have news for you: this group is becoming more integrated in society every day, and we have many people to thank.

There are service provider centers, like Merrick Inc. in White Bear Lake, that assist people with disabilities with work, training and recreational options. Then there are employers, companies and organizations that give people a chance to prove themselves, whether working in the community or through a center-based option. Our state organization recently recognized a dozen examples as “Outstanding Disability Employers.”

There are also staff members, many direct support professionals, who pour their heart and soul into making life better for this population. And, most importantly, there are families. Their support, guidance and love simply cannot be replaced.

All of these know that people with disabilities have something to offer to society: skills and talents, and often a great attitude that rivals some of the best people you know. Nancy “Little Nancy” Heim Nancy “Little Nancy” Heim, age 57, of White Bear Township, lost a long, courageous battle with cancer on Thanksgiving Day. She is survived by her son Keith Wylie and longtime boyfriend Kevin Anderson.

A celebration of her life will be held at the VFW on the lake on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, at 2 p.m. Casual, potluck.

June passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Dec. 15, 2017, after a brief illness.

Preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Benny Allen Loomis in 1996, she is survived by sons Steve (Kim) Loomis of White Bear Lake, Minnesota and Keith (Kathy) Loomis of Indiana, and daughter Allison Loomis of White Bear Lake. She leaves two grandchildren, Ryan Loomis in California and Amy Loomis in Massachusetts.

She taught elementary school in Illinois for over 20 years, before retiring to Brown County, Indiana for 15 years, where she started a book store. After she moved to Minnesota in 2004, she volunteered at the White Bear Lake library, played countless hours of Scrabble, read voraciously, and loved watching golf on TV, even though she never played a hole in her life.

Her love of books, the arts, and free-thinking will always set her apart. Her bravery, poise and graciousness through her brief illness were enviable. She will be missed by family and friends. A very special thank you to the caring staff at St. John’s Hospital intensive care unit.

Per her wishes, there will be no public service. A luncheon will be held in her honor for friends and family at Lake Square Apartments in White Bear Lake in January, 2018. Specific date and time will be posted at the apartments.

Man gets 18 years in prison for drug overdose murder

WHITE BEAR LAKE — A man convicted of murdering a White Bear Lake woman in 2016 by injecting her with heroin and meth was sentenced to about 18 years in prison Dec. 19.

Victor Wayne Lynch, 50, was found guilty by a jury on all counts for the death of Trina Marie Maurstad, 28, in November — two counts of

third-degree murder, one count of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of fi fth-degree drug possession. Lynch missed the jury’s guilty verdict because he was arrested for possessing heroin the night before in another county.

Lynch was found guilty of giving Maurstad a “speedball” of drugs at the Red Roof Inn in Roseville in 2016.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner reported Maurstad died “as a result of mixed drug toxicity including heroin and methamphetamine,” according to court documents. Maurstad was the mother of three sons, according to her obituary.

The conviction and sentencing were the fi rst in Ramsey County for a drug overdose murder.

Lynch will be incarcerated at the St. Cloud prison.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS High crimes and shenanigans in 2017: Part 1 The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Birchwood • A resident in the 100 block of Cedar Street reported an antique weather ornament in the yard damaged overnight March 16-17.

Upon later review, the damage appeared to have been made by a deer.

Dellwood • A boater on White Bear Lake reported his sailboat for capsizing under him May 28 and requested rescue.

Grant • A resident in the 10900 block of 88th Street N. on Jan. 17 reported the neighbor’s dogs for killing her chickens, which were valued at $100. No charges have been fi led at this time.

• A mailbox in the 500 block of Maple Street was reported purposefully detached from its post March 27. The complainant said a neighboring mailbox also mysteriously fell off its post.

• A local youth was left in the custody of his parents after being caught taking cases of beer at closing time Aug. 3 from a shed belonging to Loggers Trail Golf Course on 80th Street N. An earlier theft at the same location was reported on July 28 after a window to the shed was found broken in

and several bottles of hard liquor and beer went missing.

• As soon as he leaves the hospital, a Minneapolis man, 44, will be charged with canceled IPA and third-degree drug possession, after Washington County Sheriff’s deputies found him slumped over the wheel of his car April 1 on 75th Street N. and Ideal Avenue N. with a sizeable amount of drugs in the vehicle.

• A hit-and-run fender bender was reported April 9 on eastbound 75th Street N. and Jamaca Avenue N. after the driver of a white Ford followed too closely and hit the vehicle in front of him. He got out of his vehicle, apologized to the other motorist, started a short verbal altercation, then left the scene.

Deputies located the registered owner of the vehicle and have left a message for him to follow up with the accident.

• A resident in the 11000 block of Irish Avenue N. at 4:51 a.m. June 1 reported someone asleep in a vehicle parked in his driveway. The complainant suspected the slumper of being the newspaper delivery man.

• A Bonita Springs, Florida man reported his sister for abusing her power of attorney June 1 in the 1000 block of 67th Lane N.

Mahtomedi • A resident in the 3500 block of Long Lake Road reported being unable to plow his driveway Jan. 11 because the neighbor’s dog kept trying to attack him.

• A Mahtomedi man, 58, was arrested on a warrant Jan. 20 on Warner Avenue. N. and Hickory Street N.

After being released, he was again arrested on a warrant Jan. 22 in the 700 block of Warner Avenue N. • Librarians at the Wildwood Library on Stillwater Road reported $100 was found in a book that had been returned Jan. 27.

• Extra patrol was requested after a report at 11:39 p.m. Feb. 27 in the 100 block of Dylan Court of two males smoking and holding fl ashlights at the end of the cul-desac. Deputies found only two open containers of eggs.

• A Chanhassen woman on Feb. 28 reported logging on to a college program website for potential students while using the Century College Wi-Fi and within 10 minutes discovered $621 charged to her credit card account for an Apple Valley hockey club.

• A woman reportedly pumped $5.05 in gas from the Freedom Valu Center on Wildwood Road on March 5 before entering the store and saying she needed to go get money.

She then drove off in a vehicle with expired tabs and never returned to pay.

• A White Bear Lake man reported an employee of the Freedom Valu Center on Wildwood Road on March 5 for trying to punch him after he refused to serve the complainant.

• On March 25, a person was reported stuck in a St. Andrew’s Village elevator in the 200 block of East Avenue. No medical complications other than claustrophobia were reported.

• A resident in the 200 block of Edgecumbe Road reported someone falsely using her identity to return items to stores April 13. The complainant suffered no fi nancial loss.

• Management at Jethro’s Char House & Pub in the 3000 block of Century Avenue N. on April 26 reported receiving a counterfeit $20 bill after their bank rejected it.

The fraudulent note is currently in custody.

• A Stillwater cab driver on May 9 reported being stiffed out of $43 on a round trip fare emanating from the 100 block of East Avenue.

• A resident in the 300 block of 70th Street N. on May 15 reported losing approximately $3,500 due to fraudulent activity on her bank account. The bank has reimbursed the money.

Pine Springs • An abandoned tent was reported set up Feb. 27 along the Gateway Trail under the I-694 overpass.

Willernie • A White Bear Township resident on April 24 reported another male knocking a cell phone out of his hand in the 400 block of Robert Court while he was recording how that individual was behaving. When Washington County Sheriff’s deputies spoke to the subject they were told that the complainant had pushed him.

No citations were issued, and the combatants were advised to just go back to what they were doing before the skirmish.

• A resident in the 300 block of Warwick Lane reported a handicapped placard stolen from his truck Sept. 9.

• A male patron of a bar in the 300 block of Stillwater Road was reported Sept. 12 for hitting other people in the bar with a pool stick.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s office reported the following incidents:

Vadnais Heights • A St. Paul woman wrapping up her workout session at Xperience Fitness on County Road E the afternoon of Dec. 13 found her $300 jacket, with her car keys in the pocket, that she had left in a locker, gone. The 35-year-old called Dad who arrived with a spare car key. No suspects.

• A homeowner was tidying up his yard on McMenemy Circle the afternoon of Dec. 15 when a man drove up and said angrily, “My sister has been missing for several years.” The man then left in a green Toyota Corolla.

• In a lapse of sound criminal judgment, a thief successfully shoplifted a $300 Fitbit watch the evening of Dec. 15 at Target, then returned to the store and purchased an Extended Service Plan with his credit card. The 21-year-old Shoreview man was cited for theft.

• A parent of a juvenile girl reported juvenile males harassing their daughter and a girlfriend the evening of Dec. 16 from a vehicle on Koehler Road. Deputies located the five teens nearby and warned them of the consequences of their behavior, which had begun earlier at Walmart.

• A shoplifter was collared at Target the afternoon of Dec. 16 as she attempted to leave the store with items in her purse valued at $159

that she had not paid for. The 38-year-old repeat offender from Lino Lakes, upset that she was being “treated like a common thief,” was cited for theft.

• Deputies investigating a call about a suspicious person walking in the 500 block of Westfield Lane the evening of Dec. 18 spoke to the man who said he was “walking off a leg cramp.”

• A suspect attempting to leave Walmart the afternoon of Dec. 18 with toys valued at $296, was stopped at the door. The man, who abandoned the purloined products, sprinted to a vehicle and fled the scene. Ownership of the vehicle is unclear.

• Management at the Dollar Tree store on County Road E reported a suspicious vehicle parked in front of the business the evening of Dec. 18 for a “half-an-hour or more.” A deputy quizzed the 43-year-old driver from North Branch who said he was waiting for an unidentified female. Noting drug paraphernalia visible in the vehicle, the deputy asked the man to step out and frisked him, fi nding a loaded pellet gun in his jacket pocket. That raised an eyebrow and a further search revealed a baggie containing a powdery substance in the man’s shoe. The suspect was cited on a pending charge of felony possession of an unknown controlled substance and turned over to the county narcotics unit.

• Today’s featured thief purchased a scooter for $249 at Walmart the afternoon of Dec. 19 and

put the item in his car. The man then returned to the store, brought an identical scooter to the checkout counter and showed the receipt for the fi rst, then attempted to leave. Asset Protection employees, watching the entire episode unfold on security video, arrested the 40-year-old Coon Rapids man on a theft charge.

White Bear Township • Sodbusters drove around on the grounds of the Pentair office building over the weekend of Dec. 15. Security video failed to reveal license plate information on the suspect vehicle. The amount of damage will not be known until spring.

• A Pine City woman, visiting her son and his wife in the 5400 block of Township Drive, was found unconscious the evening of Dec. 15.

Medics applied CPR but it was to no avail and the 58-year-old woman was pronounced dead.

According to the woman’s son, “Mom had no serious medical issues.” The Ramsey County Medical Examiner is working on determining the cause of death.

• A Forest Lake man became “agitated” at an alcohol-fueled party in the 1700 block of Whitaker Street in the pre-dawn hours of Dec. 16 and partygoers called 911. Deputies determined the 38-year-old was best served by a trip to county detox.

the WBLFD, called the screening “a great collaborative effort of community partners.” Volunteers from the Lions Club, TRIAD and fi re department and area medical personnel all contributed to make it happen.

“For most, a screening like this can provide families’ peace of mind learning that their child has a normally functioning heart,” Voss noted.

“For others, it can provide an indication to proactively deal with any found heart issues before it is too late. I think everyone was surprised that four major structural defects were found, as well as 30 other issues among the 153 kids.”

Other issues reported in a “recap” provided

by Play for Patrick included 19 cases of hypertension, eight abnormal ECTs and three minor valvular disorders.

Patrick Schoonover was 14 when he died in 2014 from a ruptured aorta in his heart. A bantam hockey player for the Eastview Lightning, he had just scored a goal at a Brainerd tournament when he collapsed on the ice. First responders could not revive him.

In an interview with local television after his death, Patrick’s father said the heart condition was never detected during a physical exam. The family made it its mission to educate and inform parents about heart defects and to help make scans more accessible and affordable.

“Patrick’s passing stopped the world of Minnesota youth hockey Nov. 14, 2014,” said Mike Schoonover. “It forever changed our lives and we hope we can reduce or eliminate sudden death due to heart defects and save other parents from the pain and anguish we feel.”

Since its inception in 2015 and through October 2017, the foundation has screened 1,723 youth, found 61 with high blood pressure and many with minor abnormalities. Forty-two had abnormal electric or structural heart defects; six of those were life threatening and required immediate follow-up. In addition, 1,645 students and adults were trained how to perform hands-only CPR and to use an AED. Sudden cardiac arrest is uncommon, but doctors working with the foundation say all kids should be checked for heart defects.

Once tests are completed, participants and their parent (if present) meet with a physician to review the results. If tests indicate a need for further physician follow-up, recommendations are made. Participants take home a copy of the screening results. The foundation notes their methods are a quick screen and not a diagnostic quality set of tests.

Engstran said the fi re department hopes to get Play for Patrick back to White Bear Lake. The goal the second time is 200 students.

charge with a $50 charge per hour after that. Maximum is six hours and 75 attendees. Catered food to the space will be required to come from businesses located in the city.

Community Development Director Anne Kane explained that the city does not wish to compete with private sector venues that offer similar event/meeting space.

In comparison, she said, The Fireside Room at Vadnais Heights Commons, capacity of 60, rents for $90 per hour with a six-hour/$540 minimum rental fee.

For those who haven’t visited the city-owned community room in the Marina Triangle, it provides a space that commemorates the history of boat building in the area over the past 150 years.

The city reserves the right to exclude certain dates and holidays from permitted events and will judiciously prioritize scheduling, putting private social events last on the priority list.

Musician collaborates across the ocean for new record

That’s what Rich Thomsen fi rst used to record his original songs — a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder, purchased with corn detasseling money in rural Iowa. Now, Thomsen uses digital audio workstations, iPads, and MIDI keyboards to generate ideas.

The Vadnais Heights musician will release an ‘80s and ‘90s-inspired electropop EP (extended play) record, “Making the Fire,” Jan. 12.

To put together the EP, Thomsen collaborated across the Atlantic Ocean with music producer SquareSpiral in the United Kingdom.

“I write my songs on piano and we exchange ideas back and forth until it comes out as something very different,” Thomsen said. SquareSpiral takes his piano and vocal recordings and arranges them with electronic music.

“Then I record takes of my vocals to align with the new style,” Thomsen noted. “We have a few more back and forth of recordings to get to the fi nished product.”

The product is a synth-laden record that evokes ‘80s new wave sounds.

Thomsen and SquareSpiral met through alternative icon Beck Hansen’s 2012 online social music experiment “Song Reader.” Thomsen shared drafts of his songs on SoundCloud before releasing his fi rst album, “Reinvention: Selections from Beck Hansen’s Song Reader” in 2014.

SquareSpiral had chimed in on Thomsen’s tracks and when the musicians realized they had such similar music tastes, they came together to make an EP. Thomsen’s style is influenced by the sounds of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, including INXS, Information Society, Depeche Mode and Duran Duran, as well as modern artists like Regina

Thomsen wrote all the lyrics for the EP himself, with the exception of “Invictus,” inspired from the 1875 poem by William Ernest Henley.

His lyrical themes include unexpected change, overcoming adversity and the impact of social media on our lives.

The fi rst musical memory Thomsen has is a few weeks of piano lessons from his sister in elementary school. He played trombone through high school but would make up songs on the piano at home. His interest in mixing music was launched

when he received a $50 sampling keyboard from Sears while a teenager.

“I enjoyed recording original songs on tape recorders and my parents eventually recognized the interest and got me a keyboard with more keys and sounds as a birthday present,” he remembered. “This led to more compositions and regular performances of my songs at school variety shows.”

Something residents may not know about the White Bear Lake Fire Chief: He is fluent in sign language.

Both of Tim Vadnais’ parents were deaf so the family communicated through sign language. At times, the chief is called to the lobby of the Public Safety building if a deaf person walks in who needs assistance.

That handy interpretive service will be coming to an end, however, as Vadnais is retiring after almost 43 years with the fire department. His last day is Dec. 30.

The chief’s stories are many. Those that stuck start with the most horrific: “Probably the small plane that crashed on Price Field behind Central early in my career. There were body parts everywhere and I’ll never forget the smell of aviation gas. The plane’s wing landed in the back yard of a house.”

To one down memory lane: A 40-something woman who walked into his office one day with her son. She told the chief: “You don’t remember me, but you were the guy who delivered me on the Lafayette Bridge.”

To one of which he’s most proud: A statistic that marks zero fire deaths since 1986.

“Up until 1985, we averaged a fire death every 18 months,” Vadnais said. “Then I attended the executive fire officer course in Maryland. I had just become chief (in 1988) and was totally green.”

Back in court: DNR appeals, judge recommends mediation in lake lawsuit

ST. PAUL — Both sides in the lake level lawsuit may once again be headed for mediation at the suggestion of the district judge handling the case.

White Bear Lake City Attorney Roger Jensen said the city would certainly participate "if there is likelihood the matter could be resolved." The city is an intervenor on the side of the defendant, the Department of Natural Resources.

"We would much rather get this case settled than spend a month in trial," he noted.

ARDEN HILLS — “Stronger than the power of the grave, constant through the trial and the change, one thing remains, one thing remains: Your love never fails…” sang Mounds View High School students at a vigil Dec. 1 for two students killed in a car crash that morning, and one who remained in the hospital.

The vigil, organized by students, included the song, “One Thing Remains,” by Bethel Music, “Amazing Grace,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and “When

You’re Gone,” by Avril Lavigne, among others.

Principal Jeff Ridlehoover spoke briefly to the community gathering of about 200 people gathered to pay tribute to the lives of Bridget Giere and Stephanie Carlson, both juniors, and give hope for the recovery of Sammy Redden.

“Sometimes tragedy and sadness prompt love and togetherness,” he said.

Students were encouraged to wear blue at school the next day, a favorite color of the girls, a student representative said. Students were also encouraged to write messages on paper stretched on the walls to the two

girls who died.

“Once a Mustang, always a Mustang,” said the student representative.

Students also wrote messages to the fellow student, also a junior, who remains hospitalized.

“Sammy, your whole school is here for you, keep fighting,” wrote one student in pink marker.

“Bridget, you were such a beautiful soul and you will truly be missed,” wrote another student.

Meet Stillwater prison’s new warden

BAYPORT — Warden Eddie Miles, a month into his new job at Minnesota Correctional Facility – Stillwater, walks the halls of the close security prison, greeting guards and shaking hands with prison employees he meets along the way.

Miles steps into a long line of

Stillwater wardens, stretching back to 1853, when Stillwater opened its first territorial prison, north of the current prison. The newer facility, now located in Bayport, was constructed in 1914, and appears much like the classic brick prisons featured in Hollywood films. The facility houses approximately 1,600 offenders, making it the state’s largest close security institution for adult male felons, according to the

Department of Corrections.

This is not Miles’ first experience at the historic Stillwater Prison — he is a veteran employee of the Minnesota correctional system, with a varied career at several state prisons. He has worked as a correctional officer, special investigator and assistant commissioner, in addition to serving as warden at the Lino Lakes, St. Cloud and Faribault facilities.

Originally from Miami, Miles came to the University of Minnesota on a football scholarship. He said he entered the university with the idea that he eventually wanted to become a prison warden.

Once, he attended a sociology night class where an employee at the Lino Lakes prison substituted for the usual professor. She asked all the students what they wanted to become, and when he responded that he wanted to be a prison warden, she said, “I know someone you would like to meet.”

She introduced Miles to the Lino Lakes warden at the time, and in college he began working at the Lino Lakes correctional facility as an unofficial intern, helping out with activities throughout his academic career. When he graduated, he began working full time as an officer at Lino Lakes.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Though it’s been nearly a century since F. Scott Fitzgerald spent the summers of his youth on the shores of White Bear Lake, his brief presence made a lasting impression on the community.

The White Bear Center for the Arts hosted the third class in its series “How to Write Like F. Scott Fitzgerald” last week. Taught by local historian and writer Mary Jane LaVigne, the class focuses on the life, history and fiction of the famous writer, focusing particularly on his connection to White Bear Lake, where he vacationed as an adolescent and briefly resided as an adult.

Selected for discussion was Fitzgerald’s 1928 short story “The Captured Shadow,” written while Fitzgerald was living in Paris, but set in his boyhood neighborhood in St. Paul. The semi-autobiographical story features Basil Duke Lee, a character Fitzgerald has depicted in a number of stories that closely follow his own experiences while growing up. When Fitzgerald was a student, he wrote a play called “The Captured Shadow,” in which he starred as The Shadow, which was performed at Mrs. Backus’ School for Girls in St. Paul, according to “The St. Paul Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald.” The short story of the same name tells a fictionalized account of bringing that production to life, with the help of neighborhood friends — and even a few enemies.

“Basil Duke Lee is struggling with what many teenagers struggle with: his place in the world,” LaVigne said. “How does his own personal vision interact with the people he knows? How can he be sure of himself and not conceited?”

While some of Fitzgerald’s other plays connect more directly to the White Bear Lake community, LaVigne said she chose this story because the White Bear Yacht Club served as one of the venues where some of Fitzgerald’s first productions were performed. “‘The Captured Shadow’ doesn’t really have any direct White Bear connection in the story itself, but the reason I chose it and wanted to highlight the White Bear connection was that ‘The Captured Shadow’ is actually a play that Fitzgerald wrote and put on with his friends,” LaVigne said.

“And one of the places they performed plays was at the White Bear Yacht Club.”While there is no direct evidence that this particular play was ever performed at the Yacht Club, other plays he wrote around the same time, such as “The Coward,” were well documented by local papers.

Later, Fitzgerald resided briefly at the club, writing the short story “Winter Dreams” while he lived there in 1922, before leaving the community for good.

Forest Lake releases ACT on Alzheimer’s video series

FOREST LAKE — Last week, the city of Forest Lake website posted a new web video series created by the local group ACT on Alzheimer’s, as a tool to help educate the community about the challenges associated with dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease is defined by Alzheimer’s Association of America as “a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain’s nerve cells, or neurons, resulting in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes.”

The disease typically affects older adults, and in 2016, it is estimated that 5.4 million adults are currently living with the disease. The causes of the disease are not fully understood, and there is no known cure.

ACT on Alzheimer’s works to fight the stigma and create understanding about dementia. Though the organization has a statewide presence, a nine-member committee composed of local residents and business owners is tackling the topic at a local level in Forest Lake.

firsthand, is the team leader of the Forest Lake ACT on Alzheimer’s group.

“Every disease is horrible,” she said. “(But dementia) is the only thing that will take your essence.

Personally I want to see it gone. I can’t make it go away, but I can try to make your life a little bit easier, and make the world around you a little more accepting.”

The object of the videos and the education initiatives is to make Forest Lake a dementia-friendly community, Benson said. According to Benson, ACT on Alzheimer’s became active in Forest Lake in 2013, when it was chosen as one of the first seven pilot projects in the state. Now there are 37 communities embracing dementia initiatives across Minnesota.

“With the pilot project, we formed a committee and collected data,” Benson said. “We interviewed people in the area — the clerk at the bank, the checkout person at Cub Foods, the mailman — to find out what they knew about dementia.

LEXINGTON-City Council members decided to use a neutral mediator in dog bite allegations against Mayor Mark Kurth’s dog.

A mail carrier filed a police report claiming Kurth’s dog, a corgi named Daisy, bit him in the leg while he was delivering a package on Nov. 17.

According to the police report, Daniel Ellison was leaving from the front door of the property around 10:30 a.m. after delivering a package when the dog ran toward him and bit him on the leg.

In the report, Ellison said he kicked the dog in self-defense and when he tried to return to his vehicle, the dog started coming toward him again so he tried to scare the dog away. The dog ran back up the driveway and Ellison returned to his vehicle and drove away.

The bite broke the skin, according to the police report.

When the officer in charge questioned Heather Kurth, the dog’s owner, she said she heard the commotion outside but Ellison left before she could ask what happened, according to the police report.

City Attorney ney Kurt Glaser said there are two levels of designation on n for fo dog bites: dangerous and potentially dangerous.

If the dog repeatedly bites people or the nature of the bite is severe, harsher punishments would be added such as keeping the dog muzzled at all times it is off the property and keeping it on a shorter leash.

A hearing officer will make a decision on the case during mediation, which will take place within the next three weeks.

After the mediation, if Kurth doesn’t agree with the condition set by the hearing officer he can appeal it to the city council where they will vote whether or not to overturn it, Glaser said adding there aren’t many incidents that make it to the city council.

Typically, Glaser would be in charge of the mediation but he recommended the city council allow him to bring in a neutral mediator, and the council agreed.

“No one will think there is a bias either way, real or not,” said Councilmember Diane Harris.

The next regular city council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 at City Hall.

Fitzgerald’s shadow looms large in White Bear Lake WHITE BEAR LAKE — Though it’s been nearly a century since F. Scott Fitzgerald spent the summers of his youth on the shores of White Bear Lake, his brief presence made a lasting impression on the community.

The White Bear Center for the Arts hosted the third class in its series “How to Write Like F. Scott Fitzgerald” last week. Taught by local historian and writer Mary Jane LaVigne, the class focuses on the life, history and fiction of the famous writer, focusing particularly on his connection to White Bear Lake, where he vacationed as an adolescent and briefly resided as an adult.

Selected for discussion was Fitzgerald’s 1928 short story “The Captured Shadow,” written while Fitzgerald was living in Paris, but set in his boyhood neighborhood in St. Paul. The semi-autobiographical story features Basil Duke Lee, a character Fitzgerald has depicted in a number of stories that closely follow his own experiences while growing up. When Fitzgerald was a student, he wrote a play called “The Captured Shadow,” in which he starred as The Shadow, which was performed at Mrs. Backus’ School for Girls in St. Paul, according to “The St. Paul Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald.” The short story of the same name tells a fictionalized account of bringing that production to life, with the help of neighborhood friends — and even a few enemies.

“Basil Duke Lee is struggling with what many teenagers struggle with: his place in the world,” LaVigne said. “How does his own personal vision interact with the people he knows? How can he be sure of himself and not conceited?”

While some of Fitzgerald’s other plays connect more directly to the White Bear Lake community, LaVigne said she chose this story because the White Bear Yacht Club served as one of the venues where some of Fitzgerald’s first productions were performed. “‘The Captured Shadow’ doesn’t really have any direct White Bear connection in the story itself, but the reason I chose it and wanted to highlight the White Bear connection was that ‘The Captured Shadow’ is actually a play that Fitzgerald wrote and put on with his friends,” LaVigne said.

“And one of the places they performed plays was at the White Bear Yacht Club.”While there is no direct evidence that this particular play was ever performed at the Yacht Club, other plays he wrote around the same time, such as “The Coward,” were well documented by local papers.

Later, Fitzgerald resided briefly at the club, writing the short story “Winter Dreams” while he lived there in 1922, before leaving the community for good.

The case is now headed back to district court for the constitutionality issue to be addressed.

City Attorney Caroline Bell Beckman said it is unlikely the statute will be found unconstitutional.

“That statute has been around for a long time; I think it will withstand constitutional challenge,” she said.

Whether or not McCullough will have to pay the bill may depend on what the district court has to say next.

“If it is determined unconstitutional, I am not sure what would happen,” Bell Beckman said.

The city then appealed to the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

The appeals court sided with the city because McCullough’s assessment appeal had not been “properly perfected,” according to court documents.

McCullough then appealed to the Minnesota Supreme Court, which stated last August that it lacked jurisdiction over the appeal, dismissed it and sent it back to district court.

One Vadnais Heights business property owner has still not given up on avoiding a $158,000 road construction assessment from three years ago. Businesses are currently assessed 100 percent of street construction costs.

The Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled this month that although the city was right that McCullough and Sons did not fi le a written objection in time, the district court judge still needs to address the company’s challenge to the constitutionality of the statute that requires a written objection, according to court documents.

Jim McCullough had orally protested the assessment at a July 2014 public hearing and later fi led an assessment appeal in Ramsey County

District Court. Jim McCullough of McCullough and Sons owns a 9-acre parcel of land along City Center Drive and Talmage Lane that is contaminated by hazardous waste from a previous hospital, according to court documents. He has not developed the property because the cost to remove the waste is greater than the property value. He has not been able to fi nd a buyer for 15 years and uses the land to display billboards.

The city asked the district court judge to dismiss the case because McCullough had not submitted a written objection to the city, as required by state law. McCullough’s attorneys had argued that his appeal should proceed because the law’s use of the word “presented” could imply that the objection can be made orally.

Going green: it’s about much more than vegetables

Long gone are the days when food waste was slopped to the hogs. Now, it mostly ends up in landfills. There are a handful of restaurant owners, however, who are going the extra recycling mile to be good environmental stewards.

Incentives to recycling organics help, like avoiding a whopping 73 percent tax on garbage in Ramsey County. For some, the hassle of sorting waste is simply “the right thing to do.”

That’s why Culver’s in White Bear Lake recycles. Owner Amanda Braml figures her restaurant is keeping 12,000 pounds of garbage a year from spilling into a landfill. That 6 tons is not taxed by the state, which charges 20 percent on the dollar, or the county, which charges 53 percent, but still the recycling of tomato stems and paper towels “is about a wash.”

“It’s close to cost neutral because of the compostable bags and extra training required,” Braml said. “We save a little money, $240 annually, but it’s more about doing the right thing. I keep about 6 tons a year from going to a landfill and I feel like that’s worth it. If everyone recycled, it would have a big impact on the earth.”

Like other White Bear restaurants that pledged to recycle, the Culver’s owner

worked with BizRecycling, a program of the Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy Board. The service helps businesses implement solutions to increase recycling and/or organics recovery.

Ramsey County Program Coordinator Jessica Paquin explained that recycling experts conduct on-site assessments of what is going in the trash and what could be recovered, such as food waste. They provide recommendations to the business owners, who can apply for grants up to $10,000 to implement those recommendations.

“Garbage is highly taxed in Ramsey County,” Paquin noted, “so there is incentive to participate. There is no tax on things that go in the recycling bin.”

Since 2014, BizRecycling has worked with 30 White Bear Lake businesses that received on-site technical assistance and more than $116,000 in grant dollars.

Paquin said the county has awarded 530 grants since the program started in 2000, averaging $5,200.

The White Bear Area Chamber of Commerce is working with local businesses to encourage recycling. Executive Director Tom Snell said the chamber wants to promote businesses that take advantage of the program. “We want to let the community know about companies that have an equity stake in the environ-

In addition to Culver’s, other restaurants committed to recycling in White Bear Lake include Donatelli’s, Grandma’s Bakery and Washington Square & Grill.

Donatelli’s General Manager Trish Appleby called the recycling program a “no brainer.” Her restaurant added commercial composting to manage its organic waste, which includes paper towels, as well as food waste.

According to BizRecycling, the restaurant is diverting more than 78,000 pounds of compostable materials each year. They were able to decrease trash pickup frequency from twice a week to once a week, saving the business about

The program’s biggest success story is the waste enclosure behind GoodThings, according to Paquin. Ten downtown businesses joined together in 2015 to share waste services and add organics recycling. In the first year, the participating businesses collected more than 75,000 pounds of organics for recycling and increased their recycling collection by 30 percent.

New scholarship fund rewards good behavior

Acts of kindness among the Gen Z set will be rewarded by a “bonafide” organization with Mahtomedi roots.

“Our objective is to recognize and reward kindness,” explained John Schwietz, a Mahtomedi father of three and stalwart Zephyr booster.

Schwietz and a 15-member board of directors are leading a kindness movement that originates with BonafideU, an organization they hope will inspire a kinder, more peaceful world.

Their objective, as stated on the nonprofit’s website, is to empower young people to recognize acts of kindness and reward those acts with meaningful scholarships, wearable statements of the brand, and social esteem through a youth-driven movement.

The word bonafide, meaning genuine or authentic, was selected to describe people the organization is trying to reward.

“Bonafide people,” Schwietz said, “make others feel like they matter. BonafideU is our platform for telling stories about those people.”

Scholarships in the amount of $5,000 will be awarded to people nominated by their peers for acts of kindness. The stipend will be split between the person doing the nominating and the recipient.

Schwietz feels the ability to make others feel like they matter is an accolade more important than a “35 on the ACT.” The scholarship program will launch Jan. 9 at the Mahtomedi-St. Thomas Academy basketball game. Representatives of the Minnesota Timberwolves will be there to help make the announcement. The NBA team is “all in” with the initiative, according to Schwietz, and wants to use T-wolves games as a venue to recognize scholarship recipients.

The fi rst scholarship will be awarded Feb. 2, Super Bowl weekend, at the Mahtomedi-Tartan basketball game. The date was selected as a “once-in-a-lifetime chance to give the world a dose of Minnesota Nice that it so desperately needs,” noted Schwietz.

The program is not just for Mahtomedi students. Anyone is eligible, added Schwietz, who hopes youth in surrounding communities will step up to honor their peers.

“Our culture is very divisive and negativity is

everywhere,” he observed. “We want to get out stories of kindness. When people apply or nominate someone for a scholarship, if it’s a story worth cultivating, we plan to produce a video that will be played at the event where the scholarship is presented. The award will be a surprise and we’ll have a camera crew there to capture the recipient’s reaction.”

Schwietz is the same Mahtomedi dad who spearheaded a new football foundation called 1stDown! in 2016. For this latest endeavor, he recruited people he considers “bonafide.” Among them are Harry Melander, a Mahtomedi resident and union leader who happens to be his uncle, and Paul Dinzeo, a Stillwater attorney. There are also five youth members on the board who will determine who receives the scholarships. Four are college age and one, Jamie Berg, is a Mahtomedi High School student. Schwietz’s son Jack, a St. Thomas University student, is one of the board members.

Schwietz, an attorney and professional fundraiser with Minnesota Masonic Charities, is working with foundations and philanthropists to secure scholarships. Funding will also come from BonafideU’s apparel line, which is using a business model similar to Love Your Melon, a brand dedicated to giving hats to children battling cancer. The clothing is branded with the bonafide logo he says “signals the person holds themselves to a higher standard.”

“We are all volunteers,” Schwietz pointed out.

“We’re just trying to get people to be nice to each other. By reinforcing the right behavior with the right words and giving a voice to the right storytellers, we can make civility cool. This is going to be something, and I expect it to be big.”

The goal is to give out $500,000 in 2018, or 100$5,000 scholarships.

Guard’s hot hand leads Bear cagers over Mahtomedi Sam Schwartz poured in 32 points as White Bear Lake beat Mahtomedi 76-65 as part of a girls-boys basketball double header on Thursday evening at home. The Bears took control with a 19-0 run in the second half.

Schwartz, junior guard, sank three straight three-pointers early in the game and kept rustling the nets throughout, including 9-for-11 on free throws. He is averaging 21.7 points.

“In the second half, Mahtomedi tightened his defender,” said Bear coach Keith Lockwood, “but Sam did a good job taking advantage of transition, and also in the half court attacking the rim.”

“Having all our guys back from injury and illness has helped us balance out, tonight having four players in double fi gures,” Lockwood said. “Defensively, as a team, in the second half we did a good job speeding Mahtomedi up, which suited our game more than theirs.”

Off the bench, senior Josh Griefenhagen and junior Carter Ehlers, provided a defensive spark which started the 19-0 run, he added.

Jeremy Beckler added 12 points and Isaac Tessier and Blake Charles 11 each for the Bears (4-3). Mahtomedi was led by J’vonne Hadley with 15, Zac Centers 14, and Jack Shay 11.

Mahtomedi (5-2) fended off St. Paul Highland Park 70-65 at home Tuesday as Hadley, 6-foot-5 sophomore guard, notched 21 points. Devin Melzer added 11 and Karmoga Lero 10.

The Bears on Tuesday hosted one of the most talented teams in the state and took a 96-61 thumping from Cretin-Derham Hall. Jaeden King sank 20 points, while Gopher recruit Daniel Oturu hit 17 points and another D-1 prospect, Sy Chatman, had 13 to lead the Raiders (4-1).

Schwartz had 24 and Beckler 14 for the Bears.

Bear girls falter in back-to-back duels with Cretin, Mahtomedi

White Bear Lake girls basketball had a tough task last week, hosting Top Ten ranked teams on two successive nights.

The No. 12 Bears (5-4) lost to both Cretin Derham Hall 51-42 on Wednesday night and Mahtomedi 32-30 on Thursday night.

“It was a perfect storm (of trouble),” winced coach Jeremy Post, after the Mahtomedi game. “We had to play two straight nights because of a concert Tuesday night moved our game to Wednesday. The girls were tired tonight. We had our two best players on the bench half the game with fouls. We made some mistakes and missed too many shots.

“It was sloppy. Ugly. We’ll just have to regroup.”

Conference rival Cretin-Derham is ranked No. 5 in Class 4A and Mahtomedi is No. 6 in Class 3A. The White Bear Lake vs. Mahtomedi game was part of a girls-boys doubleheader between the next-door neighbors, with a large crowd on hand, including many alumni home from college on their holiday break.

Nine Bear players scored against the Raiders but nobody lit it up. Ella Janicki and Courtney Crouch sank nine points each and Tessah Anderson seven.

Meanwhile, Frannie Hottinger dominated with 25 points for the Raiders.

Mahtomedi nipped the Bears as Emma Grothaus capped an otherwise frustrating night by driving for the game-winning basket with three seconds left. Off an inbounds play, she got the ball at the high post and slipped past Jordan Ferrand — a duel of Division I bound senior centers — for an underhand layup.

Grothaus, averaging 24 points coming into the game, was limited to 11 against the Bears. Closely guarded constantly, she missed 17 shots in the paint, according to Mahtomed stats, and was 3-for-8 at the

line. But she got the one they needed. Annika Sougstad added 10 for the Zephyrs (7-1).

“Defense pulled us through,” said coach Eric Prose.

“We couldn’t hit anything tonight.”

Crouch scored 14 points to lead the Bears, who led 13-3 early and were in front most of the game. Ferrand was next with seven. Both were saddled with foul trouble.

Mahtomedi was knocked from the unbeaten ranks

by Chisago Lakes 59-56 on Tuesday evening. “We had foul trouble early, started slow, got down early,”

said Prose. “We missed a lot of open looks.” Grothaus scored 18 points, Sougstad 15 and Josey Underwood 10. Carmen Backes led Chisago Lakes (4-2) with 23 points.

Back on the ice: women recapture joy of skating with synchro team

Susan Hope Berlien, of Shoreview, was purchasing figure skates for her daughter a couple years ago when she mused to the shop owner that she’d like to get back on the ice herself.

“So, you want to skate? Maybe you should join this team my wife skates on,” suggested Shawn Hastings that day at Strauss Skates and Bicycles in Maplewood.

Soon, Berlien joined Jenelle Hastings with Northern Fusion Leather & Laces, a synchronized skating team for adults.

As the only currently registered adult team in Minnesota, the team has a dozen members aged 18 to 39 skating to a medley of witch-themed songs in several exhibitions and competitions each year. Rules of the sport limit under-21 membership to four per team.

“We like this because it’s something for us,” said Berlien. “I’m a mom and a nurse, and I spend most of my time taking care of others. So this is one thing that’s just for me that’s fun and good exercise and it’s social.”

Northern Fusion is coached by Andrea Hall, director of synchronized skating for Maplewood Figure Skating Club. Hall has coached for over 25 years and currently leads four teams.

Berlien, the oldest member at 39, skated with the Roseville Figure Skating Club and played hockey in her youth. She was a member of the first Mounds View/Irondale girls team in 1994.

Marriage and career intervened. “I started having babies and didn’t do anything like this for a while,” Berlien said.

But she was determined to get back on the ice after her two sons started playing hockey for Mounds View and her daughter joined only the White Bear Lake Figure Skating Club.

Hastings, of Arden Hills, grew up playing hockey with her brother on White Bear Lake and the St. Croix River, while also figure skating.

Not surprisingly since her family’s business is Strauss, a fifth-generation store that’s well-connected with all aspects of the skating community.

Hastings was a member of the Maplewood Highsteppers for over 10 years under coach Hall. While attending the University of Colorado, she switched over to hockey to play for the women’s club team. After college,

she was invited to skate with an adult synchro team in Minneapolis for three years, then took a break in 2011 to have children. Hall convinced her to join Northern Fusion this year.

Another member with a hockey background is pre-school teacher Kyra Leonard, of St. Croix Beach, who played during grade school while also figure skating. In sixth grade, she had to stick to figure skating “because it was too hard for my parents to have two kids, and my mom, at three different rinks.”

Her parents were involved in Disney on Ice, and her mother started Woodbury’s figure skating club.

Shannon Granholm, editor of the Quad Community Press and The Citizen began skating at age three.

After skating on the District 196 Icettes team in high school and the University of Minnesota-Duluth Synchronized Skating team, she was eager to be part of a team again. She joined last year.

Other members include: Shannon Davis of Shoreview, Hannah Ulrich of Maplewood, Alysia Nelson of Arden Hills, Madelyn Mitchell of Minneapolis, Ashley Beery of Minneapolis, Sabreena Boyum of Falcon Heights, Alicia Bonebright of Hopkins and Sabrina Regina of Minneapolis.

The season lasts from late August to February or early March. The team has already performed at the University of Minnesota Holiday Exhibition on Dec. 3 and competed at the Maplewood Synchro Classic on Dec. 16. Although there weren’t any other teams to skate against locally, the team uses it as an opportunity to gather feedback from judges and improve their program for the next competition.

“We use it as a chance to get in front of judges and see what scores we would get,” Hastings said. “We had no competition because there are no other adult synchronized teams in Minnesota. The younger teams there had competition.”

The club is gearing toward the Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships in Wichita, Kansas, from Jan. 24-27, in hopes of qualifying for nationals in February in Portland, Oregon. The club has existed for six years and qualified for nationals three times.

MAHTOMEDI — If you didn’t like wireless communications facilities barnacled all over water towers or hanging on free standing towers, a change is coming.

Wireless cell boxes might also be draped around a street light near you.

The City Council at its Dec. 19 regular meeting gave grudging approval to the fi rst of three actions to permit wireless service providers to install small wireless facilities in public rights of way.

The fi rst of three tasks in the process completed Tuesday was to adopt a standard collocation agreement to install small wireless facilities on city-owned wireless support structures.

Earlier this year, the Minnesota Legislature amended Statutes Chapter 237 to recognize wireless service providers as “telecommunications right of way users” and to require cities to permit them to install wireless facilities in public rights of way.

The legislation also places limits on fees the city may charge the wireless service providers and requires that the city include the terms of collocation either in their ordinances or adopt a standard collocation agreement that complies with the legislation for use with the wireless service providers.

City staff recommended that council adopt the collocation agreement rather than put the terms of that collocation into City Code, so that the city could more easily change the collation agreement as needed over time.

“We’re adopting the standard collation agreement adopted by League

of Minnesota Cities tonight,” said City Attorney Jay Karlovich. “The new small-cell law allows any wireless company the same rights as the cable company or Xcel Energy.”

They must be permitted to put up small cell boxes to make cell phones work in houses so anyone can stream data. The boxes on top of the poles are supposed to be less than six cubic feet in volume, he said.

Mahtomedi owns only 12 to 14 light poles outright, most of which are near Southwest Park. Most of the poles in the city are owned by Xcel Energy, Karlovich said. “We’re going to come back with a proposed right of way ordinance and a zoning ordinance. We can regulate them so (they) can’t put a huge box right in front of a resident’s window, for example,” he said. “For tonight, the city can adopt the standard model collocation agreement that we may never use because we don’t have many light poles.”

“Can decorative poles be made to get a box and make the whole pole ugly?” Councilwoman Lael Ramaley wondered.

Yes, and there is nothing the city can do about it, Councilman Joel Schilling said.

“It was a fairly ugly battle at the Legislature with very powerful entities against the League of Minnesota Cities,” Schilling said. “The League was starting to be taken to the cleaners.” In the past, some telecommunications companies have gone out of business or merged and “left stuff there,” he said. Municipalities have been stuck with items on fi xtures in rights of way. “We lost that battle.”

Businesses can say to municipalities, “I’m bankrupt; the cell box is yours,” Schilling said.

At upcoming meetings, council

The 6-foot-3 junior led a 75-66 win over Mahtomedi with 32 points on Thursday, after scoring 24 in a loss to No. 2 ranked CretinDerham Hall on Tuesday. Schwartz, an excellent three-point shooter and driver, averaged 10.8 points as a sophomore.

School resumes on Jan 2, 2018. Welcome to White Bear information and registration events will be happening at all levels in January. Student Report - Rensted reported on the community work of the National Honor Society, the success of the boys’ and girls’ hockey teams, Chemistry Club hosting Grade 2 students, Career Day at South Campus, and the Student Council annual custodial night where they provide dinner to the custodial staff and take over the role of cleaning the school. DISCUSSION ITEMS: 1) Presentation and Public Hearing Related to the Proposed 2017 Payable 2018 Property Tax Levy- Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Tim Wald and Director of Finance Tom Wieczorek conducted a public hearing on the proposed 2017 payable 2018 property tax levy. The total levy of $38,587,309.02 represents a 6.98% increase from the previous year. This increase was not caused by the renewal of the district’s operating levy. Many factors can cause the tax bill for an individual property to increase or decrease from year to year. The complete presentation is on the district website. 2) First Reading of School Board Policies: a) Policy 406, Public and Private Personnel Data, b) Policy 413, Harassment and Violence.

C) Policy 414, Mandated Reporting of Child Neglect or Physical or Sexual Abuse d) Policy 415, Mandated Reporting of Maltreatment of Vulnerable Adults, d) Policy 424, License Status, and e) Policy 515, Protection and Privacy of Pupil Records. Board members Kimball and Newberg gave a brief description of changes in each of the policies. The policies will be on the January 8, 2018 meeting agenda for action. OPERATIONAL ITEMS: 1) Wilson moved and Newmaster seconded to approve the certification of the final 2017 Payable 2018 Property Tax Levy in the amount of $38,587.309.02.

Tax levy approved at last meeting of year

WHITE BEAR LAKE — The number reported last September for the tax levy remains unchanged.

At its last meeting of the year Dec. 12, the City Council approved the 2017 tax levy and 2018 budget.

Collectible in 2018, the $5.6 million levy represents a $452,000 increase over last year. That includes an additional $80,000 for operations; $226,000 for an adjustment to reserves and $146,000 for capital equipment.

The tax levy, which supports the 2018 budget, does not include any new or expanded operational programs or services. It does provide for a competitive compensation plan.

Councilman Bill Walsh said he preferred the $146,000 wait until next year, but other council members disagreed. “We’ve had negative years and zero years with no levy increase,” noted Councilman Dan Jones. “It is time to move forward, especially with the capital equipment fund.”

Councilman Kevin Edberg agreed with Jones, saying “staff has been incredibly frugal” and it was “wise to start tucking money away.”

A new fi re truck is in the city’s future.

Councilman Doug Biehn asked that the policy be amended to include reasoning why video can’t be viewed in advance of a statement to an investigative agency by an officer involved in a critical incident.

He worried that officers will be second-guessed by the public so felt clarification was needed.

There could be rare circumstances that allow an officer to review video prior to the investigatory interview. In that case, the police chief will authorize the review and the reason for it. That information will be publicly available upon request.

Members of the media or public seeking access to BWC data will be referred to the city clerk and/or chief of police, who will process the request in accordance with the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act and other governing laws.

A copy of the policy is posted on the city website.

Maintenance of the cameras, made by Motorola, will cost $20,000 per year.

• A joint powers agreement with Ramsey County for dispatch services.

The city will be billed $202,000 per year for the service. The city will also pay $45,000 to buy into the county’s existing computer-aided dispatch system. Councilman Steve Engstran voted no and Biehn abstained. The transition

should be completed by summer.

• A request by Violet Montessori for a conditional use permit for a school located at 2025 Fourth St. The new school, founded by three area women, is currently on hold awaiting grant funding from the Wildflower Foundation.

• A management agreement for Pioneer Manor.

The city-owned apartment complex for seniors will now be managed by Walker Methodist after a request for proposals went out for management services.

The complex has been managed by Ebenezer Management Services since 2008. Ebenezer was the highest bidder at $81,000 among four proposals. Walker Methodist bid $58,400. That was not the lowest bid, but its proposed staffi ng levels were considered more fitting to current resident needs, including an on-site manager.

It also proposed higher wages for on-site personnel to support highly skilled staff. The price was within the 2018 budget, which assumed a slight rental increase in spring.

Walker Methodist has been serving older adults since 1954. The company owns and manages 1,361 units, in which 260 are affordable, independent senior housing similar to Pioneer Manor.

• A request by Betsy Larey to split one lot into two for property located at 1298 N. Birch Lake Blvd.

• A feasibility report for the 2018 street reconstruction project and mill and overlay project.

Streets involved included Birch Lake Avenue S., with a trail, and old White Bear Avenue (Cottage Park Road to South Shore Boulevard).

MAHTOMEDI CITY COUNCIL NOTES MAHTOMEDI — The City Council conducted the following business at its Dec. 19 meeting: • After conducting a public hearing for the Quail Street utility extension, passed a resolution ordering the public improvement project, authorizing preparation of fi nal plans and specifications, authorizing the advertisement for bids and authorizing the preparation of the preliminary proposed assessment roll for pending assessment reporting purposes. Three residents petitioned the city in June 2017 for the improvements, and additional petitioners have been added since that date. The Quail Street extension will connect to the sanitary system on Tamarack Street by a gravity system only. The total cost of the project is expected to be $389,000, City Engineer John Sachi said. Council voted not to add $193,000 in water main improvements to Briarwood Avenue to the project.

• After receiving feasibility study recommendations from the consulting engineer, decided not to move forward with Ideal Avenue utility extensions, because the project was not fi nancially feasible. The total estimated project cost for the utility extension would have been $345,664, which would have been split among six properties to the tune of some $50,000 to $56,000 per lot.

• Approved a request from Sharkey Design Build LLC for a minor subdivision with the purpose of dividing property at 498 Warner Ave S. into two lots, with conditions that include the removal of a driveway close to the curb cut section. The Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval at their meeting last week.

• By a vote of 4-0 (Councilwoman

Lael Ramaley abstaining), approved a request from Robert and Ann Garry for a conditional use permit (CUP) to create an accessory dwelling unit at 709 Park Ave. Garry is Ramaley’s daughter.

• Approved an ordinance amending the City of Mahtomedi City Code, Chapter 12, by adding Section 12.07 relating to the removal of snow and ice for the city’s commercial and industrial zoning districts. The ordinance will require that the owner of any property in a commercial and/or industrial zoning district be responsible for removing snow and ice from parking lots, driveways, steps and walkways on the premises. Owners of residential properties have already been made responsible for snow removal on their premises.

• Approved the WSB & Associates 2018 rate schedule, which reflects an overall increase of 2.3 percent.

WSB provides design, planning, engineering and constructions services to the city.

• Approved the Century College fi re department training contract at a total annual cost of $3,300. This is the city’s fourth year participating in the program.

• Approved the insurance agreement with the Hitching Company for wagon rides as part of the annual skating party, scheduled for Jan. 21.

• Hired a temporary seasonal public works employee, as a regular public works employee is currently out on a worker’s compensation injury and another on maternity leave. The temporary employee will be compensated at a rate of $12.50 per hour.

• Approved the audit engagement letter from CliftonLarsenAllen for the 2017 fi nancial audit in the amount of $36,500, the same as the

• Passed a resolution committing the general fund balance to fund incomplete construction projects.

Council also passed a resolution committing the general fund balance for funds above the level approved in the fund balance policy for street improvements.

• Approved an ordinance amending Chapter 11, Section 9.6 — Accessory Uses and Other Uses (A) (14) Permit Requirements Relating to Accessory Building Size. To be consistent with state building code language, staff recommended amending the ordinance to state, “A zoning permit shall be required for all accessory buildings less than 200 square feet in area. All accessory buildings over 200 square feet shall require a building permit.” This amendment was unanimously approved by the Planning Commission.

• Added a Sunday liquor license to the license packet of the Lakeside

Club for a fee of $200.

• Approved construction pay voucher No. 1 in the amount of $33,300 for Pember Companies Inc. for the Neptune Crosswalk Improvements Project.

• Approved the defensive driving training contract with Dakota County Technical College for snowplowing. The contract is for two public works employees and is recommended every two to three years.

• Approved the fi re department training contract with Hennepin Technical College for forcible entry training.

• Approved the 2018 mileage rate at 54.5 cents per mile, as set forth by the IRS. The new mileage rate reflects an increase of one cent over the allowable federal 2017 rate.

The council next meets at 7 p.m. Jan. 2 at City Hall, 600 Stillwater Road.

It all began with a letter of invitation from Dr. Jay, president of Bethel University, and Barb Barnes, to accompany them on a Bethel University arranged trip to Israel. Gene and I had talked about the possibility of going for many years. It was an important item on our bucket list. This time there was no reason not to go.

Israel is a land of ancient civilizations, devout Christians, Muslims, and Jews. It is also a land of contrasts, promises made, promises broken, prophecies, political upheaval, expectation and hope. A land to make discoveries and renew your spirit.

The language of the country is Hebrew. Its capital is Jerusalem and its population is 8,821,850.

The population of Tel Aviv is 420,000 and is the location of all the embassies. The population of Jerusalem is 830,000. Israel is bordered by six countries: Egypt, Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and West Bank. Its highest point is Mount Hermon at 7,336 feet and the lowest is 1,224 feet below sea level at the Dead Sea. Israel’s geographic size is slightly larger than the state of New Jersey. It is 73 miles east to west and 263 miles north to south.

The fi rst part of the trip focused on the geography, history, religions and on going wars of Northern and Eastern Israel. The days were overflowing with new information about places familiar to us from the Bible, wars we’ve read about and seen on television and the cultures of people living in Israel.

One of our guides commented, “It is a miracle Israel still exists as a nation!”

In 1947 a Bedouin shepherd threw a rock into a crevice in the rocks looking for one of his goats. When he entered the cave he found pottery jars which contained handwritten scrolls. Since then the handwritten manuscripts of Biblical texts and sectarian texts have been found in 13 caves in the Qumran area. It is considered the most significant archeological find ever made in Israel.

The scrolls were written by the Essenes, a Jewish sect who lived in a monastic community in the late 2nd century.

Mount Carmel is where Elijah held his contest with the priests of Baal to prove who was truly God in the Old Testament. It has been the site of many historic battles for possession of the land.

Israel. We were aware of demonstrators but never felt unsafe.

“Boker Tov” was the greeting each morning as we boarded the bus and began the tour for the day. Ariel, our guide, informed us we should respond with “Boker Or”.

Our fi rst night was in Tel Aviv. Ariel, our guide explained that “Tel” is archeological layers of varied civilizations. The meaning of “Aviv” is springtime and flowers.

The facts dispelling our preconceived notions about Israel came so fast we could hardly keep up. For example: the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea are both actually lakes but there is no word for lake in Hebrew. There are three deserts in Israel: the Negev Desert, the Judean Desert and the Sinai Desert but Israel is by no means all desert. There are plantations of grape vines, palm and fruit trees irrigated by drip lines, which the Israelis developed.

The Jordan River is the only river long enough to be designated a “River”. Syria claims more land than just the Golan Heights. In 1973 Syria almost acquired all of the Golan Heights back during a surprise holiday attack. They wanted the Golan Heights because the amount of rain that falls there fi lls the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee.

Eli Cohen was an undercover agent who donated money and held parties for the Syrian generals. When they showed him the military positions he was able to pass the information to Israel and they bombed the installations. He told the generals the soldiers needed shade and encouraged them to plant Eucalyptus trees. He was able to direct bombings according to the groups of trees. Eventually the Syrians fi gured it out and captured him. They tortured him for three years until he died. Israel never got his remains back.

He was so quiet in what he did his wife never knew his occupation.

Mount Hermon divides Syria, Lebanon and Israel. It is the highest mountain at 9,230 feet.

Its melting snow provides water for the Sea of Galilee.

Capernaum, Magdala, and the Village of Nazareth were fi lled with artifacts, archeological digs and reminders that Galilee was the area where Jesus’ three-year ministry was concentrated.

Our guide, Ariel, could not go into Jericho or Bethlehem with the group because he was Jewish. Local guides were provided in both places.

The Jesus boats are 60 feet long. The vessel “Shimon” had a 190 horsepower Caterpillar engine. Her freeboard is only six feet so her ability to take high seas is limited. Her low sides made for easier pulling in of the fishing nets.

We were treated to a cruise from Tiberias to Ginosaur.

Jerusalem , One City under God Jerusalem truly can be called unique. Three religions, half the human race, claim Jerusalem as central to their beliefs.

Fodor’s Travel Israel states: “Since 1918 a municipal bylaw makes it mandatory to face even high-rise commercial buildings with the honey-colored ‘Jerusalem Stone’, the local limestone.

The stone glows at sunset giving the description ‘Jerusalem of Gold’ to the city.”

Jerusalem is important to Jews because it is referenced in the Old Testament as: the Holy City, the Biblical Zion, the City of David. The Western Wall is the last remnant of the Temple Period.

Christians have found it important for the last 2,000 years because it is where Jesus died, was buried and was resurrected from the dead.

The Muslims believe the gold topped, Dome of the Rock is Mecca, where Muhammed ascended into heaven.

It is amazing that several of the religious sites are shared by various religions, particularly the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which is shared by six Christian denominations. Each has its privileges and they have worked out schedules, interior restorations and traditions.

Be aware of the various holy days of Israel’s religions. For example on “Shabat” or the Sabbath, the Jewish believers aren’t allowed to work.

Hezekiah’s Tunnel is located under the city of David. It connects to Gihon Spring which is Jerusalem’s water supply along with Siloam Pool. It consists of a 1,750 foot tunnel into the mountain to the source of water. During the digging the workers began from each end of the tunnel. As they grew closer to meeting they kept calling to each other and pounding on the rock so they would know which direction to dig. Miraculously they met.

We nit and picked our way to a decent snow cover by Christmas with a few tiny snowfalls, and along with the colder temperatures, it prevented the snow from melting. Growing trends in today’s homes Although the heydays of the real estate boom of the early 2000s have not quite returned, things look positive. In the United States, 1,226,000 new homes were built in 2016, according to data from Consumer Reports. That was the most since 2007.

Resales also have been more promising. The National Association of Realtors® says the median number of days a home was on the market in April 2017 reached a new low of 29 days. However, low supply levels did stanch existing home sales somewhat.

By mid-2017, the market was a seller’s market, with more people in the market for homes than properties available. But sales during that time were still outpacing sales figures from a year prior. In fact, in May 2017, home sales in Canada increased to their highest level in more than five years, according to the Canadian MLS® Systems.

Low interest rates on mortgages and more confidence in the economy has driven many people to make improvements to their existing homes. As is typical, the things homeowners are looking for in 2017 have evolved from years past. The following are some trends that are helping to steer the real estate market further.

• Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor. com reported in 2015 that

new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet.

There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties.

The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

• Matte finishes: Stainless steel and luster have been popular for years.

However, the next big thing is matte finishes on faucets, appliances and even in countertops.

These less flashy finishes are prized for their warmth and elegance. While some high-end models with matte finishes have been available for several years, even less expensive models are now available.

• Smarter technology: Many homeowners are embracing smart technology throughout their homes, but it’s not just lights that turn on with voice command or more efficient thermostats.

Innovative technology includes toilets that can autonomously stay clean and sanitized, refrigerators equipped with cameras so homeowners can see the contents inside and indoor food recyclers that can turn food waste into fertilizer.

Staying abreast of the ever-changing trends in home improvement and real estate can help consumers make the best choices with regard to buying and building their homes.

A passion for woodworking

What started out as a hobby quickly turned into a dream job for White Bear Lake natives Dave and Allysa Nadeau. The pair started building custom furniture for their own home a few years ago and developed a passion for creating furniture for others. Their business, Lake Life Furniture LLC, offers durable pieces that are custom-built to each customer’s needs. It also allows the couple to spend more time at home with their daughters, Elsie, 3, and Nora, 1.

High school sweethearts, Dave and Allysa (Glass) graduated from White Bear Lake Area High School. Dave attended college at the University of Minnesota-Duluth while Allysa attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Known for his stellar football career at UMD (he is the kicker who scored the winning 32yard field goal for the NCAA Division II Championship in 2010), Dave recently left his job as a civil engineer to devote himself to crafting furniture full time. Allysa, a registered nurse, works as a donation coordinator for LifeSource, a nonprofit organ donation program.

“The best part of my day is getting to have lunch with my wife and girls,” Dave said. “As my career heads down a different path, it’s really nice to look back and be proud of my education and the work experience that got me here.” He attributes his woodworking passion to skills he learned from his dad and woodshop classes he took in high school, but acknowledges that much of his knowledge has been selftaught.

The first pieces the couple built for themselves were a TV stand and end tables for their living room. Then they created an outdoor table to accommodate their large extended family. Next was a bed frame, a headboard, and then a dining table.

Each piece of furniture —black walnut entryway benches, a reclaimed wood dresser, an 18-foot pine table, even custom-built treehouses — is unique. The cedar, alder, hickory, maple, walnut, mahogany, ash, cherry and red oak materials, among other woods, are hand selected to ensure the best possible lumber goes into each product, Dave said.

It can take anywhere from a few hours to a week to craft a piece, though turnaround time for new projects depends on the number of

orders coming in. It usually takes six to 12 weeks to fill an order, Dave said.

Customers are from all over the Twin Cities area.

Cost? “A lot of times we don’t know the exact cost of a piece until we are finished with the design process, which we do with each client,” he explained. “I’ve done small stepstools for $25 all the way up to full dining sets coming in around $3,000. We work with each and every client to create the perfect piece within their budget.”

A licensed professional engineer, Dave said the most rewarding aspect of his job is getting to see the satisfaction on clients’ faces when they see that he has taken their vision and made it a reality.

For now, the couple produce their products from the garage of their home in Hugo, but Dave said they plan on finding a new home with space to build a new shop.

“We believe that if you’re passionate about something, it’s worth pursuing,” Allysa remarked. “You never know where life is going to take you. We certainly didn’t think that at this stage in our lives we would be running our own business.”

What would she advise for others who might be thinking about turning a passionate hobby into a full-time job?

“Keep your head up, work hard, and don’t let anybody stand in the way of your dreams.”

Take part in time-honored tradition of Christmas Bird Count

A Christmas goose is one thing, but volunteers across the nation will soon celebrate the holidays with Christmas chickadees, cardinals, crows and many more birds of all shapes and sizes.

The National Audubon Society has entered its 118th year of the nationwide Christmas Bird Count (CBC), and the nearest count in Washington County is coming up soon.

In centuries past, families gathering for Christmas often participated in a “side hunt,” competing with each other to shoot as many birds as possible for sport.

Ornithologist Frank M. Chapman was credited with the idea of counting birds rather than shooting them each holiday season.

The tradition survived and eventually became a yearly census, keeping track of the population, movement and other trends of thousands of bird species across the U.S., Canada and, more recently, South America.

The count always takes place sometime between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5, depending on when local compilers organize it. The Northeast Suburban Count will take place Dec. 30 this year. Volunteer bird counters will spread throughout an area with a 15-mile radius, centered on Withrow. This particular bird count began in 1958 and has had a devoted following of experienced birders.

Following a day of traversing woods, hill and dale, the counters have gathered for a potluck at Warner Nature Center, where they share their experiences and sightings.

In a past interview, local count coordinator Jim Howitz said that the main goal of the count is to create a bigger picture of the relative trends of bird populations. One of the factors that affects these trends is the changing landscape of the area, which has been converted from mostly farms into subdivisions. Howitz said that as houses get older, the trees that were planted around them get bigger and provide new habitat for bird species. He also said that the bird populations have recovered significantly since the pesticide DDT was banned in 1973. Shortly after, it was a rare thing to see a bald eagle during the count because their populations had been decimated by the chemical. Now, Howitz said that 50 eagles is a typical total.

said that most of the species he identifies are by song.

Birders of all abilities are welcome.

Some volunteers participate in the CBC without ever leaving their homes. If their home happens to be located within one of the survey areas, they can ask special permission from the count coordinator to report the birds that visit their yards throughout the day of the count.
