One way, two way, both way, no way BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
WHITE BEAR LAKE — Bicycle enthusiasts weren't the only ones attending a packed Ramsey County meeting on the South Shore Boulevard trail. The open house, the second of two to gather input on design options for the 1.5-mile Lake Links segment, drew an estimated 150 residents Dec. 7 to South Shore Trinity Lutheran Church. Many were County Road F neighbors concerned about the multiuse trail's impact on traffic and pedestrians. Like the first meeting in November, attendees were asked to identify how they prefer to see a 10-foot multiuse trail designed. Options include designing a one-way road, maintaining two-way traffic, or a combination of both. Three options are on the table: • Option 1 continues South Shore as a two-way road with a trail separated from traffic. This option is the most expensive and will likely require right of way acquisition, particularly east of McKnight Road. • Option 2 would make the entire segment, from White Bear Avenue to 120 (County Line Road), a oneway road. It remains undecided if vehicles would travel east or west. • Option 3 would keep South Shore a two-way from White Bear Avenue to McKnight, but add a trail on one side. From McKnight to 120, the road would be one way. One-way traffic would impact area roads such as McKnight, Bellaire and County Road F, but no change to overall traffic volume is expected. The county representatives, which included Jon Oyanagi, head of the Parks and Recreation Department, asked those who live on South Shore to place a colored sticker on a map to convey their preferred option. Red is one-way only; green is combined one way and two way and yellow is a two-way with trail. Lake Links co-chair Mike Brooks gauged both the stickers and SEE LAKE TRAIL, PAGE 8A
