The Jones family stays strong in faith for Kayla’s full recovery.
Benefit planned for Kayla-Strong A Dec. 4 fundraiser is planned for Kayla Jones, the young White Bear Lake woman struck by a truck July 30 in Duluth. Kayla suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, a fractured neck, strained neck arteries and damage to multiple internal organs. To save her life, surgeons had to remove part of her skull to relieve pressure on her brain before she was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center. The 20-year-old is still recovering after spending weeks in the hospital and undergoing reconstructive skull surgery. According to her parents, Dan and Sallie Jones, Kayla still suffers from severe short-term memory loss that prevents her from returning to her life before the accident for at least six months. A $10 ticket at the benefit will include dinner provided by Donatelli's and cupcakes from Grandma's Bakery, a raffle with a 1-in-500-chance to win a $600 Delta Airlines voucher donated by Venburg Tire; a $500 gift card from Peoples Midwest Bank and a $400 Kowalski's Markets gift card. There will also be a silent auction. If you can't attend, a GoFundMe account has been set up for family donations at www.gofundme.com/kayla-strong. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards costs related to Kayla's health care and income loss. The timing of Kayla's injury set the family back after her mom's recovery from stage 3 cervical cancer less than three years ago. Her parents add that Kayla's story isn't about her injuries. Rather, it's a story of a miracle that displayed the power of prayer, faith, hope, family, friends, health care professionals and community coming together to support her recovery.

Protective lake level: Lawns could bear brunt BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
An important number is expected mid-December from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). That inkling from DNR Water Resources Section Manager Julie Ekman concerns a protective elevation figure for White Bear Lake. Why is the number important? Because maintaining the protective level involves water appropriation permits. If lake elevation falls below the number, measures would be taken to remedy the problem. That could lead to long-term bans on
nonessential water uses like lawn irrigation. “If we set a protective elevation and it’s shown that a groundwater withdrawal is negatively impacting the lake, then this number would apply to those permits,” explained the DNR manager. “We would have to make some adjustments to permits, perhaps through a condition.” Ekman has been meeting with communities within 2 miles of the lake to discuss what the protective level means and a municipality’s ability to enforce a ban if it comes to that. “We still have to flesh out nonessential water uses,” she said. “The low-hanging fruit,
