Bond passes, new school plans underway BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR

Now that the White Bear Lake Area School's $326 million bond referendum has passed, Hugo can expect a new elementary school to likely open in fall 2022. The new one-campus high school in White Bear Lake will probably open in fall 2024. The bond referendum, one of the largest district asks in state history, passed by voters at about 57%, or 8,536, votes on Nov. 5. About 43%, or 6,336, voted no. Superintendent Wayne Ka-

zmierczak said he was crossing his fingers going into election night but knew the district had worked really hard to inform the community about the bond and what it would mean for students. “There was obviously strong support through the entire school district, and the margin of victory was pretty substantial,” he said. “It is pretty exciting to think about how many students are going to be positively impacted by this for generations to come.” With the money, White Bear Lake Area Schools plans to build a new elementary school in Hugo,

expand North Campus to house all high school grades and construct upgrades at all other schools. The plans include the relocation of Sunrise Park Middle School to South Campus. Sunrise will become an early childhood center, transition center and senior center, and will house district offices. The vacated District Center, where the district offices are currently, will be an expansion for Central Middle School. Oneka Elementary in Hugo will become a K-5 school and Hugo Elementary SEE BOND, PAGE 9A

Avaiyah and Isaiah Ballweber take advantage of the sunshine, relatively warm weather and an irresistible pile of raked leaves for some late fall frolicking Saturday, Nov. 9 in White Bear Lake. The autumnal respite was brief, however, and the predicted temperatures for the upcoming week are definitely wintry.

The Mahtomedi area community hopes to build a $15 million ice arena on district land for area hockey and other sports programs. So far, Rinc 2 Corp. (Recreational Ice and Neighborhood Center), the nonprofit that has been planning and will manage the ice arena, has received $700,000 in pledges, according to Alex Rogosheske, founder of the organization. The largest pledge of $400,000 came from a private citizen, he noted. The Mahtomedi Youth Lacrosse Association has pledged $100,000 for the cost of one wall; the association plans to have storage in the arena and use the outside of the wall for ball throwing practice. The nearly 46,000-square-

foot arena will have space for storage for various sports. The arena will seat 1,200 people and have a total of seven locker rooms. The arena bathrooms will also have access from indoors and outdoors so that those facilities can be used by sports teams yearround. The arena will be patterned after the St. Croix Valley arena in Stillwater. $15 million is the top end of the nonprofit's fundraising goal. “Our plans can vary depending on how much money we raise,” Rogosheske said. Construction would take about seven months. The arena would be located next to playing fields east of the high school and middle school. The land is owned by Mahtomedi
