GRANT CITY COUNCIL: Members squabble over seating, are re-establishing Planning Commission PAGE 8A
City, school board election results
White Bear Lake: Two seats decided by few dozen votes
Mahtomedi: Incumbents survive challenges
District 624: 3 newcomers to join school board
A political communicator and a firefighter are joining the White Bear Lake City Council. Bill Walsh was elected to the Ward 1 seat and will replace Renee Tessier, who did not seek re-election. Steven Engstran won the Ward 5 seat and will succeed Bryan Belisle, who also did not seek re-election. Dan Jones was re-elected to his Ward 3 seat. Walsh is the director of public affairs for the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus and a leader at St. Mary of the Lake Church. Engstran is a White Bear Lake firefighter, part-time White Bear Lake police and fire 911 dispatcher and a warehouse supervisor. All candidates received fewer than 200 votes. Engstram defeated his challenger by 15 votes and Walsh beat his challenger by 36 votes. Turnout in the city was 9 percent. Ward 1 had the highest turnout of 12 percent.
Mayor Judson Marshall and councilmen Richard Brainerd and Timothy Deans were re-elected. They defeated challengers by large margins. The threeterm mayor survived challenges from the city's former fire chief and a former Planning Commission member. Four people ran for two open council seats and the two incumbents persevered. Almost twice as many residents of the northern part of the city turned out to the polls than their neighbors on the south end of town. Turnout in Precinct 1 was 30 percent while turnout in Precinct 2 was 18 percent.
Two former teachers and a current educator were elected to the White Bear Lake District 624 School Board. Ellen Fahey, Marge Newmaster and Scott Wilson were the top vote-getters. They will replace Chris Hiniker, Cathy Storey and Lori Swanson, who all decided to retire. Fahey is a recently retired teacher who most recently taught at Sunrise Park Middle School. Newmaster is the media specialist at North Campus and previously also taught German. Wilson taught eighth-grade science in Fridley before retiring last year. There was a slate of six candidates, after a primary held in August narrowed it from 10. Less than 1 percent of registered voters turned out for the primary. For the general election, turnout was 10 percent.

The fountain of youth must be on 4th Street BY DEBRA NEUTKENS REGIONAL EDITOR
During her time in the service, Rose Bayuk crossed the Atlantic Ocean 26 times. The WWII Army nurse worked on a hospital ship called the USAHS Thistle that shuttled troops back and forth to Europe. Return trips carried the casualties of war, filling the ship's 454 beds. Her memory fully intact, the veteran of the Great War reminisced about those days during her 100th birthday party Nov. 2 at the Best Western Country Inn. Bayuk's son Mark threw the bash for Rose, complete with a Chinese lion dance and a surprise visit from the mayor, who proclaimed Nov. 2 as Rose Bayuk Day in the city of White Bear Lake. The diminutive centenarian has
vivid recollections of her life on the ship and the patients she attended. On one return trip, she was checking on a soldier in a top bunk when a "beautiful young man" in the bunk below tugged at her slacks. "He was calling for his mother," she recalled. "When I turned to him, he died right then and there." They were both nurses and social workers, Bayuk said. "We listened to their problems as much as we treated their wounds. Many didn't know what they were going back to because they got Dear John letters while overseas." The hospital ship went to northern Africa, Italy, France and England. It cruised without escort, carried no fire power and was "lit up like a Christmas tree at night," Bayuk said. The ship, like other medical carriers, was considered neutral and never attacked. Learning curve lection results are in. Your candidates will be taking office at the fi rst meeting of the new year. It’s clear the system works. You voted some candidates in and some out and now the learning curve can begin. Mayor, city council and school board elections are difficult transitions for employees who have jobs overseen by these elected public officials. The learning curve is steep, from the basic Robert’s Rules of Order, open meeting laws to the policies and procedures. As newly elected officials settle in they get used to the Publisher’s public engagement or lack thereof. Our reporters have a View duty to cover the information Carter Johnson at these meetings from planning and policy changes right down to eminent domain, where the government takes property for public use. Our local newspaper reporters work to cover the key topics that are important to you. As everyone settles in, it is my hope that both the reporters and the officials have a professional respect for one another and keep the lines of communication open. Along the way those newly elected will soon be quoted by our journalists who are working hard to keep the residents informed. Public officials have opened up themselves to criticism-which can come not just at council meetings or public events, but while in line at the movie theater, in voice mails at their home, at church or while dropping their kids off at school. Letters to the editor may challenge them with questions. Understand the paper is a community communication tool that spans every group. To residents and tter writers, I challenge you to be reasonable. Get to know your elected officials and don’t come out of the gate swinging, punching or screaming. Put vendettas aside, sit in on work sessions and meetings, volunteer and learn the process. By attending a few meetings or a planning session before a problem arises, you’ll understand how to ask good questions and where, when and how to put the pressure on. Often hundreds of hours go into the planning of a major development or school project before the actual vote takes place. Decisions that are made now impact the community well into the future. Many times residents are late to the starting line and ask us to do something, but it’s too late. Get involved before the vote takes place. We have a good system that works when residents are involved. Learn about what decisions are being made, and get involved to help make the community a better place now and for future generations. Subscriptions According to our front desk we are roughly 221 subscribers ahead of last fall’s campaign. Whether you are a new or a long-time subscriber, please know how much we appreciate your support of the local paper. It’s exciting to see the youth carriers turn in their subscription packets with smiles due to the gracious tips they received for good service. Again, thank you for your commitment to local news and for supporting our youngest entrepreneurs whose fi rst job is delivering your paper. Also look for the list of fi nalists for the iPad drawing in this weeks’ paper.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Love for new library The new White Bear Library has been open for about six months now, and it is an exciting, warm and welcoming community space. The children’s area near the program room allows the space to be used by children when the room is not being used by others. The offer of a cup of coffee/tea and opportunity to sit in the fireplace area is a welcome addition. The windows and solar tubes provide lots of natural light. I appreciate that the stacks are a bit lower to provide a feeling of openness and light. I appreciate the additional electrical outlets for technology. Thank you for providing the computers and wireless printing capabilities.
The library is a regular stop for me to soak up the ambiance that is uniquely White Bear Lake. Sonja Irlbeck White Bear Lake Need a council that listens It was great news that Steven Engstran won our Ward 5 seat for the White Bear Lake City Council! We knew we didn’t want anyone on the City Council that is on the Planning Commission. The commission helped push the two four-story buildings through: Boatworks Commons (Ward 1) and Waters Senior Living (Ward 5). The residents in Ward 5 only asked that the Waters building be limited to three stories. The Planning Commission totally
ignored the request of residents, and only two City Council members seemed to listen (Renee Tessier and Kevin Edberg), neither of whom even represent our Ward 5. So we focused efforts to help Steven Engstran win the Ward 5 City Council seat, and it seems to have helped. We need to have a City Council that listens to the residents. This win helps restore some faith that residents/voters can indeed make a difference — at least at the polls. Peggy Van Sickle White Bear Lake Testament to council and workers Thank you to everyone who supported my campaign for White Bear Lake City
Council. I especially want to thank Dan Louismet for stepping forward and running for office. I got to know Dan during the campaign and he is a great person with a bright future. During this campaign, I asked hundreds of people in Ward 1 how they felt about our city. The overwhelming response was positive – a testament to the current council and the employees of White Bear Lake. I plan to keep that positive momentum going as we head into 2016. Please call me at 651373-1819 with any questions or concerns. I consider this job to be more customer service than public policy. Thanks again. Bill Walsh Councilman-elect White Bear Lake

City accepting Planning Commission applications GRANT — The city soon will once again have a Planning Commission. The City Council last week approved a procedures manual for the advisory body. It also set an application deadline and a schedule for applicant interviews. The citizen body will hold public hearings and review land-use-related issues, including development applications and proposed zoning amendments. The commission makes recommendations to
the City Council. The commission was disbanded by the council in 2013. The council has been discussing reinstating the commission for several months and developed a manual that sets applicant qualifications and appointment procedures, outlines the commission's responsibilities, sets guidelines for how the commission conducts its meetings and more. The volunteer members will be appointed by the City Council and
Councilman removed from meeting after seating arrangement dispute usual seat and remained in the seat between Carr and Councilman Larry Lanoux. Carr made a formal motion to require Sederstrom to move and the motion passed 3-2 with Lobin and Huber joining Carr in support. Carr then suggested that Lobin and Huber switch places and that motion passed 3-2. When Sederstrom again refused to move, Carr asked the Washington County Sheriff deputy who was present to “have Mr. Sederstrom moved to his seat or escort him out of the building.” As the deputy approached, Carr asked, “What's your choice, Mr. Sederstrom?” to which Sedarstrom responded “handcuffs” and held his arms out toward the deputy. The deputy declined to
GRANT — A debate over Grant City Council's seating arrangement lead to one councilman being escorted out of Town Hall and another councilman leaving in protest. When the Nov. 3 council meeting was called to order, Councilman Loren Sederstrom was in the chair usually occupied by Councilwoman Tina Lobin and Lobin was standing behind him. Sederstrom reported he had chosen not to sit in his usual seat because he did not want to sit next to Councilman Jeff Huber. He alleged that a moment of physical contact that occurred at the October regular council meeting constituted an assault. Sederstrom ignored Mayor Tom Carr's multiple requests to move to his

Application forms are available at cityofgrant.us and must be submitted by Jan. 22. The council will interview candidates on Feb. 2 and possibly also March 1, depending on the number of applicants. The council is scheduled to appoint commission members on March 1. Kristine Goodrich
handcuff him and Sederstrom then walked out and the deputy followed. Lobin and Huber then switched places, placing Huber between Lanoux and the mayor. Lanoux, who had earlier expressed an unwillingness to sit next to Huber, then got up and walked out. It's the second time Sederstrom and Lanoux have left a meeting shortly after it began. They walked out of an August emergency meeting in protest of the time at which it was being held. Kristine Goodrich
RATE INCREASE NOTICE NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS FOR CENTERPOINT ENERGY MINNESOTA CUSTOMERS
EVIDENTIARY HEARINGS
CenterPoint Energy has asked the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) to increase its rates for natural gas distribution service. The requested increase is for $54.1 million, or about 6.4 percent per year. The requested increase would add about $5.15 to a typical residential customer’s monthly bill.
Formal evidentiary hearings on CenterPoint Energy’s proposal start on Jan. 19, 2016, at the MPUC’s offices at 121 7th Place East, St. Paul. The purpose of the evidentiary hearings is to allow CenterPoint Energy, the Minnesota Department of Commerce – Division of Energy Resources, the Minnesota Office of Attorney General – Residential Utilities and Antitrust Division and others to present testimony and to cross-examine each other’s witnesses on the proposed rate increase.
CenterPoint Energy requested the rate changes described in this notice. The MPUC may either grant or deny the requested changes, in whole or in part, and may grant a lesser or greater increase than that requested for any class or classes of service. The MPUC will likely make its decision on our rate request in the summer of 2016. If final rates are lower than interim rates, we will refund customers the difference with interest. If final rates are higher than interim rates, we will not charge customers the difference.
PUBLIC HEARINGS Administrative Law Judge Eric L. Lipman is holding five public hearings on the company’s proposal. Any CenterPoint Energy customer or other person may attend or provide comments at the hearings. You are invited to comment on the adequacy and quality of CenterPoint Energy’s service, the level of rates or other related matters. You do not need to be represented by an attorney to provide comments during the public hearings. Bad weather? Find out if a meeting is canceled – call (toll-free) 1-855-731-6208 or 651-201-2213 or visit mn.gov/puc.

MAHTOMEDI CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Mahtomedi City Council took the following action on Oct. 4: • Approved proceeding with abatement at 115 Spruce Street. If the owner of the property doesn't bring the house into compliance with city code, the city will tear down the house, clean up the site and assess the cost to the property owner. The house is partially demolished and uninhabitable and the garage encroaches on the neighboring property. Debris also reportedly has been blowing into a neighboring property. A co-owner of the property said she and her daughter hope to rehab the house and have hired a contractor. The contractor first would remove the noncompliant garage. She asked the council not to move ahead with abatement. Council members noted that the city building official had given the property owners prior warnings. They opted to move forward but indicated they might be willing to rescind the abatement order if significant progress is promptly made on the property. • Held a public hearing on the proposed 2016-2020 Capital Improvement Plan. The CIP identifies nearly $24 million in prospective road and other infrastructure projects for the next five years. City Engineer Jay Kennedy advised that the CIP is not binding — inclusion of a project in the plan does not guar-
antee that it will occur. Next year's proposed projects, which are the most likely to occur, include: phase two of the Historic District road and utility work, pedestrian improvements along County Road 12 near the Piccadilly redevelopment and trail improvements in Katherine Abbott Park. The draft CIP includes two new crosswalks with warning signals on Highway 244, but Kennedy suggested that project be removed from the plan or postponed because the city did not receive a state grant it had applied for that would have funded a large portion of the cost. The full CIP is available on the city website for residents to review. The document will be approved along with the 2016 budget in December. • Accepted a nearly $7,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Health to help fund an initiative to locate and create a database of the locations of all wells in the city, including abandoned and undocumented wells. The state-mandated project does not include inspections of known private wells. • Accepted the Certificate of Achievement in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association. It's the 24th consecutive year the city has received the award, which recognized the thoroughness of its 2014 annual financial report. Kristine Goodrich
A bi-weekly section where readers will be informed on subjects of seasonal interest, upcoming events and other timely topics. WHY DOES THE TOWNSHIP SWEEP THE STREETS - Street sweeping is necessary for a number of reasons. It helps keep vehicles and pedestrian safe by keeping debris off the roadways, it helps keep streets well maintained and it helps protect surface water quality and the environment. WHEN DOES THE STREET SWEEPING OCCUR - The Township conducts bi-annual street sweeping in the Spring (April / May) and the Fall (October until the 1st snow fall). Spring Street Sweeping removes the de-icing materials and debris that piles up on the streets over the winter and helps protect water quality by keeping sediment-filled runoff from entering our storm drains, ponds streams and lakes. Fall Street Sweeping helps prevent the fallen leaves and other materials from entering our storm drains, ponds, streams and lakes. ESCAPING THE WEATHER THIS WINTER? Residents who leave the Township for extended periods of time, generally during the winter months, need to notify Utility Billing (651-747-2754) when they leave to provide a forwarding address. WWII VET: Army nurse married future White Bear Lake city manager FROM PAGE 1A
"We saw periscopes around us and distant bombing that turned the sky red, but I was never frightened," Bayuk recalled. "We just did our job. There was nothing else to do. All we had for entertainment was a little room with chairs and a radio." After the war, Bayuk returned to her hometown of Buhl, Minnesota, and married Edward Bayuk in 1947. He had served in the South Pacific and was the Eveleth city clerk at the time. They moved to White Bear Lake in 1955 after Ed got a job as city manager; all due to his fortuitous stop at Benny's barbershop on Washington Square. Rose told the story of how she and her late husband wound up in White Bear Lake: "Ed was on his way to a job interview in Duluth when he decided to get a haircut. He stopped at the downtown barbershop.
Benny knew everything. He asked Ed what he was doing in town and Ed said he was on his way north to interview for a city manager's job. Benny told Ed White Bear Lake was looking for a city manager. Ed didn't know anyone in town and he didn't have relatives in town so they said, 'let's hire him; he doesn't know anybody.'" Rose has stories, too, about being the city manager's wife. One time she and Ed were eating dinner at 6 p.m. when their phone rang. "The man wanted to talk to Ed. I told him we were eating dinner. He said 'What? Only peasants eat dinner at this hour.'" Then there was the time the city's water service was disrupted and a resident brought over his dirty dishes. "We had the same problem with our water so I don't know what they thought we could do,'" Rose said. "Ed invited him in but told

him to leave his dishes outside." Bayuk still lives in the same house on Fourth Street she shared with her husband, who died in 1999. Longtime residents may remember her as Dr. Robert Reif's nurse. She worked for the late physician for 15 years until he closed his office to become medical director of St. John's hospital. Mayor Jo Emerson has known Rose at least a dozen years and describes her as the "consummate hostess." "She's a mind blower; so gracious and kind. She makes everyone feel welcome," Emerson said.
The remarkable 100-year-old still holds dinner parties for eight almost weekly and does all the cooking. She still plays bridge in four different clubs, including her church group, St. Mary of the Lake. She's been a member of the White Bear Lake Women's Club since 1956 and continues to be a voracious reader of newspapers and magazines. Her favorite reading materials are recipes and cookbooks. Son Mark, a '67 White Bear grad, returned from the Far East in 2007 after a long career with the foreign service to assist his mother. "She called
me one day and said, 'you know, I'm not getting any younger.' It turned out to be good for both of us," he said. Mark said he asked his mother the secret to becoming a centenarian. "She didn't answer, but I know what it is. She has a mantra that she sometimes recites: 'I serve you before I serve myself.' She does that with everything in her life. That is her secret to a long life." Bayuk's health is good — she's been spared hip and knee replacements and is mobile, but no longer drives. Rose wastes little energy dwelling on the past but maintains a positive attitude that
Mark calls "forward looking." "She is very active socially and very involved in the world around her," he said. "And she doesn't care about pomp and circumstance. Rose has constant energy and is usually in charge of everything. I get tired watching her!" Bayuk chuckled when she recalled an acquaintance seeing her on the street last year. "She said, 'Rose, are you still here? Did God forget you?'" Apparently He did. We asked Bayuk if she thought she’d live this long? Without hesitation, she answered, “Yes I did.”

Unique fundraiser offers affordable, anonymous art For $30, locals can take home an original, smallscale work of art and support the White Bear Center for the Arts. Small Arts~Big Hearts is an unique fundraising art event 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13 at the arts center on Long Avenue. More than 1,000 donated original works of art —all 5-by-7 inches, and all $30 — will be for sale. Previews will begin at 6 p.m. Buying won’t be allowed until 6:30 p.m. “What makes this benefit so unique is that all artwork will be displayed anonymously, and the identity of individual artists isn’t discovered until after its purchase,” said White Bear Center for the Arts Executive Director Suzi Hudson. “The fun comes in not knowing for sure whose work you’re buying until after it’s purchased. There’s a bit of a mystery surprise
element to the event, which makes it really fun. It also reinforces the idea of buying art that engages you versus buying for name. This aspect really seemed to resonate with the artists.” The participating artists include some well-known names, according to Lori Swanson, the center’s new event and membership coordinator. “Some of the participating artists' work sells in the thousands of dollars, normally making it unaffordable to many people. However here everyone with $30 has a chance to own art,” Swanson said. “One artist says he’s going to bring all of his grandchildren and give them each $30 to start their own art collections. It’s a great way to get kids looking at art and thinking about what excites them.” Hudson said some people were skeptical artists
would embrace the idea. “When we first stated our goal of 1,000 pieces, people thought we were crazy, but as the deadline approached we had lines of artists waiting to donate, some with their arms full. Art started flooding in by mail, too. We’ve received art from all over the country,” Hudson said. “It just goes to show you how passionate the artists feel about this place. They really rallied to make this happen.” The 5-by-7-inch size limit was a challenge for some of the artists, said Danielle Cezanne, the arts center's program director. “This was a big shift in how many of the artists work,” she said. “A few expressed it was really challenging to work so small. But then something exciting started to happen. Artists started to say they were thinking differently about their work and find-
ing new ways to get out of their own boxes. This was such an unexpected benefit of the event.” Proceeds from Small Art~Big Hearts will help make arts education programs at the arts center accessible to anyone who wishes to participate. The White Bear Center for the Arts is the only nonprofit arts organization in the Greater Northeast Metro area that provides a broad range of art classes and programs for adults, children and families. December opening planned for fitness center Owners of the new Planet Fitness in the White Bear Lake Marketplace plan a grand opening Dec. 15. The 21,000-square-foot building is still under construction at the old K-mart site but a nearby trailer is open for membership sales. Co-owner Kevin Murphy describes Planet Fitness as a low-cost, 24/7 gym that does not cater to body builders or weight lifters. "We create a judgment-free zone that caters to people who haven't belonged to a gym before," he said. "We have strength equipment and 96 pieces of cardio equipment, so there is no wait. We also try hard to maintain a clean environment with locker rooms." Membership is either $10 or $20 per month for extra amenities. Enrollment fees during the pre-sale are $1 versus a normal $29. To join, people can visit the trailer 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. Membership can also be purchased online at www.planetfitness.com. A fitness
trainer is available during the week to assist and answer questions. Murphy, who has three other gyms in Mankato, Chicago and Philadelphia, liked the neighborhood. "The shopping center should bring a lot of traffic," he noted. "There is great visibility and great access. A Starbucks is going in next door. We think White Bear is a good market for our product." Real estate office helps seniors with chores Employees of the Coldwell Banker Burnet White Bear Lake office helped area seniors by raking leaves Oct. 30. The 15 volunteers were part of a Senior Chore program sponsored by Northeast Youth & Family Services (NYFS). A total of 67 bags were fi lled with leaves in two hours at two seniors' homes. The White Bear office is partnering with NYFS in its program to assist seniors who wish to live independently in their homes by providing help with basic services. Branch Vice President Chuck Stout said they're planning another leaf-raking day next week and will help with shoveling when the snow flies.

HEALTH TRENDS
Mental Health: When “Something is Just Not Right” The start of school is a time of hope for success, growth, the joy of being with friends and the promise of something new unfolding for children, teenagers and their families. However, early into the school year, some parents begin to see signs that their children are struggling. Kim Lundholm-Eades, owner of CenterLife Counseling in Centerville and White Bear Lake, advises families to pay attention when they sense that “something is just not right.”
motivate them to explore an utilize productive means to attain them.
“We often hear families tells us about changes in eating, sleeping, mood, activity and behavior that worry them,” says Kim who is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. While some changes can be normal, a pattern of emerging extremes or extended periods of extremes is worth parental attention. These changes can impact the whole family system, increasing stress, disrupting routine, creating conflict between parents and confusion and frustration due to unsuccessful attempts to understand and intervene. By getting help and an outside perspective, families can gain reassurance that all is well and tools to help them process through normal changes, or if there is a more serious issue, treatment by a qualified professional.

Kim elaborates, “With young children we utilize play therapy to help children express what is troubling them.” Children are unable to understand and talk about their feelings the way adults do. For children, toys are their words and play is their language. When it comes to middle and high school ages, we co-create solutions with the teen, using their stated goals to

Zephyrs can't kick about third-place finish BY MARK AGUIRRE CONTRIBUTING WRITER
The "Good News" "Bad News" portion of the state Class A girls' soccer tournament for Mahtomedi came following their semifinal setback at the hands of defending champion Orono. The obvious bad news was the loss to the Spartans ended their state title hopes. Part of the good news was the fact that they had one more game to play together. One more opportunity for a closeknit squad (that included nine seniors) to play for a trophy. The rest of the good news was that the final matchup was scheduled for their home field, where they were 8-1 during the season with eighth straight victories. The Zephyrs (16-5) took advantage of the situation by dealing fi fth-seeded Princeton

a 3-2 defeat to claim third-place honors last Thursday. Third-seeded Mahtomedi spotted the fi fth-seeded Tigers a 1-0 lead before scoring a trio of goals in just over
13:00 to put them in a 3-1 driver's seat. The three goals came from Zeph senior standouts Savannah Smith (on a penalty kick), Karleen Yapello (at the 46:00 mark), and
Michelle Austin (the eventual game-winner 4:00 later). Maggie Peterson and Samantha Donnay supplied the Princeton (194) markers. Donnay's goal with 9:00 remain-
ing brought them back to 3-2, and made for an exciting fi nish. The Zephyrs had a big 22-6 advantage in shots, and 11-2 cushion in shots-on-goal. Mahtomedi goaltender Kennedy
Bergren had two saves on the way to the win. Orono used a pair of second-half goals to sidestep Mahtomedi 2-0 in the state semifi nals at St. Cloud State the previous day. Lily McKown scored at the 44:45 mark, and Claire Bash added a goal at 52:19 to fuel the Spartan victory. Senior Berit Thorson went the distance in the Mahtomedi nets. She fi nished with a trio of saves. Top-seeded Benilde-St. Margaret's claimed this year's state Class A title by topping Orono 4-2. The Red Knights captured the Class A crown in 2012 and 2013, before Orono grabbed top honors last fall. The Zephyrs opened the state tourney with a 1-0 win over unseeded St. Peter. Juniors Finna Maixner and Mara Yapello, and Austin represented Mahtomedi on the all-tournament team.

McGauley 34th at state meet One last run, one last time to impress. It was only fitting that Mahtomedi's Caitie McGauley was ending her prep cross country career in Northfield, at the state meet this past Saturday. The senior has set the pace, and has been a team leader and motiva-
tor for the Zephyr girls over the years. She ran an outstanding race on Saturday, covering the 5K layout at St. Olaf College in 18:59.4 to place 34th, after finishing 55th last fall. Mahtomedi eighth-graders Rachel McCleery and Libby Tuttle competed in
hopefully their first of many state showdowns. McCleery was 126th in 20:19.6, and Tuttle 141st in 20:32.8. Edina (68 points) edged Marshall (76 points) for top Class AA girls' teams honors. Bethany Hasz (17:32.2) was the girls' medalist.

MINNEAPOLIS — Ryan Suter has a new business venture. The Minnesota Wild defenseman is an equity investor and partner in Twin Cities-based ASPIRE Beverages. ASPIRE Beverages was started in 2012 by two Minnesota hockey dads, John Montague and Jesse Parker, who couldn’t find a healthy sports drink for their active families – so they created one. Upset by the sugary, caloric, neon-colored drinks being consumed in the name of sports, they assembled a team of experts to develop sports drinks with electrolytes, vitamins and minerals designed to improve health and performance but without the sugar and artificial ingredients found in the leading brands. The health aspect is part of what drew Suter to ASPIRE, “My wife, Becky, introduced me to ASPIRE. She was buying it for our son. Working with ASPIRE combines two of the most important things to me- my family and health.” Suter is much more than a celebrity endorser for the growing

company. He will be a part of business development, promotional events, marketing, product development and testing. It is a role Suter said aligns with his goals, “In business, I am always looking for ways to help kids have fun and get to the next level. These values were instilled in me by my dad, Bob Suter. He always said, ‘It’s all about the kids.’ Kids want to drink sports drinkswhy not give them one,
like ASPIRE, that will help them perform at a higher level and be a healthier person.” In the past three years, ASPIRE has become the sports drink of choice for top athletes, like Suter. According to Montague, “Ryan is an example of greatness- on and off the ice- and the perfect representation of our brand.” Both are excited about this partnership taking ASPIRE to the next level.
