WHITE BEAR LAKE — Emily Onyeaghala remembers her son Chukwudi Benjamin would always give her a hug when they came home and ask her, “How was work today?” “Whenever I remember that, I will say, “Oh my goodness, how will I get that back again?” Benjamin, 19, went missing near Winona State University Oct. 7 and his body was found in the Mississippi River near Winona Oct. 18. Benjamin was in his second year of Benjamin Onyeaghala studying exercise and rehabilitative sciences at Winona State, reported the university. Emily said Benjamin had dreams to go on and get a master's in a similar field at Hamline University. Benjamin graduated from White Bear Lake High School in 2015 and was part of the state wrestling team that year. He joined the team as a junior with no prior wrestling experience, Emily said. Priest makes appeal: Don’t forget Haiti BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
Fr. Ralph Talbot worries that people will forget the devastation that struck Haiti yet again, when Hurricane Matthew slammed into an area near and dear to his heart. The monster storm destroyed dormitories for the elderly and damaged a school that parishioners of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church dedicated only last March. That school, located in Marfranc, is named after Cecelia Duffy, a 12-year-old White Bear Lake girl who died in 2012 while undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukemia. As he prepares to leave Oct. 26 for the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country,
Fr. Talbot reminded church members that Haiti is desperate for help. “I want Haiti to remain on people’s minds,” the priest said. “It’s already fallen off the front page.” St. Mary’s mission to Haiti traces back to a long-ago connection with a priest named Fr. Bernard Reiser. Ordained in 1949, the White Bear Lake parish was Reiser’s first assignment. He visited Haiti in 1996 and after seeing the profound poverty the cleric established an organization called Reiser Relief, which provides relief, hope and dignity to the poor, elderly and homeless people of Haiti. It funds education and housing and provide food and clean water to women, children and SEE HAITI, PAGE 9A
