New space devoted to student creativity BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR

WHITE BEAR LAKE — An old storage space across from the media center at South Campus has become a place where students can let their creativity flow. The school launched a maker space this fall, a place where students can work on creative projects before, during or after school with state-of-the-art equipment and craft supplies. Media Specialist David Olson received a $5,000 grant from the Greater Twin Cities United Way last school year to develop the maker space. He said he was inspired to make a maker

space after hearing about Mounds View High School's maker space in its media center. “We've got a perfect spot for that,” he said. The classroom was previously an audiovisual storage room — years ago it held overhead projectors and TVs, and then computers, said Olson, who has worked at the school nearly 20 years. As technology became embedded in classrooms, the space went mostly unused except it was the place where students painted signs to display around the school announcing upcoming events. Now, students will be completing

Invasive weed becoming major drag for sailboats BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

Working on the railroad Workers use specialized machinery to perform maintenance on the Short Line Railway along Hwy. 61 near downtown White Bear Lake last week. The repairs were made possible with money allocated earlier this year by the State Legislature. The $1.1 million project will help keep more than 500 jobs in the region. Minnesota Commercial Railway operates the track through White Bear to Hugo’s Bald Eagle Industrial Park.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Notable sailors around the lake worry that a longtime nemesis is gaining ground. “We are losing the battle against Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM),” said Fletcher Driscoll, appearing before the White Bear Lake Conservation District (WBLCD) board of directors. At its meeting last week, the board heard comments from Driscoll, who owns a racing fleet of A scows, and Jay Rendall, a retired invasive species coordinator for the Department of Natural Resources, who has sailed on White Bear Lake for 40 years. Driscoll was part of a lake management committee in the '90s, he said, that focused on preserving the recreational quality of White Bear Lake. He has lived on the Dellwood peninsula most of his 80-plus years. “I am speaking from a sailor's point of view,” he told the board. “Frankly, we are losing the battle to milfoil. We have a situation where we are not gaining on this problem. We are losing so much of the lake that it is depressing.” SEE WATERMILFOIL, PAGE 8A
