WHITE BEAR LAKE — A 4 percent enrollment increase this fall in White Bear Lake Area Schools has the district already nearing its five-year projected enrollment increase in one year. Increasing district enrollment is one issue Superintendent Wayne Kazmierczak noted as to why the community should vote yes on the district's upcoming levy renewal on the Nov. 7 ballot. Enrollment in October of 2016 was about 8,200; this October it was about 8,600. The 4 percent jump is historic. Enrollment began to increase in 2013 by 0.5 percent and increased by 1.5 percent in 2016. A demographer last school year predicted enrollment would increase in White Bear Lake Area Schools to between about 8,700 and 9,000 in five years and between about 8,900 and 9,400 in 10 years, according to district documents. “Much of that growth is occurring in the northern part of the school district,” Kazmierczak noted. He also said that the district is not only growing — it is changing demographically. In 2008, 84 percent of students were white and in 2016 75 percent were white. SEE SCHOOL LEVY, PAGE 9A

Cancer survivor proponent of genetic testing BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

A retired landscape specialist, Renee Tessier adores flowers, but she is no shrinking violet. When doctors used the 'C' word to diagnose her pain, the former City Councilwoman's immediate reaction was to get the tumor out. ASAP. So she became her own advocate to move up the surgery by going elsewhere. It was something her dad had said years before that first raised a red flag. Tessier's dad died from bladder cancer and she remembers him saying his first inkling of illness was pressure on his rectum. She was doing yard work on a Friday at her son's house when Tessier experienced similar pain. On Monday, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “I had been experiencing discomfort for months,”

Tessier recalled. “When I stopped the council in January 2016, I thought I would focus on getting healthy. My body wasn't responding to exercise and diet and I thought it was just age. The thing that stuck in my mind was my dad's description of his pain. That saved me.” Tessier was told she must wait a month for the surgery. That wouldn't do. She contacted someone she knew at the U of M Institute of Basic and Applied Research Surgery through the VFW auxiliary asking if they would view her film. A few days later she was scheduled for surgery to remove a cancerous, baseball-size ovary. The point, Tessier said, is to be proactive when it comes to your health. Her cancer journey has taken several forks in the road to recovery. While tolerating six heavy doses of SEE CANCER JOURNEY, PAGE 8A
