White Bear Lake's VFW Post 1782 had the honor of hosting an elite group of heroes Saturday, Oct. 8. In Minneapolis for their annual convention, eight Congressional Medal of Honor recipients visited the Keep Zimmer Post on White Bear Lake. The men were served a buffet breakfast and spent about two hours fishing thanks to the many volunteers who assisted with the expedition. Security was tight for the event due to the recipients' high profile, said VFW Commander Rick Gwynn, and it was not open to the public. The St. Paul Police Department did a bomb sweep at 5 a.m. with their dogs and law enforcement from the White Bear Police Department, Ramsey County Sheriffs and State Patrol were in attendance. The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force that can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. There are 77 living recipients. Formed in 1958 under President Dwight Eisenhower, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society holds SEE MEDAL OF HONOR, PAGE 8A

WHITE BEAR LAKE — In “The Great Gatsby,” the summer of 1922 was filled with drinking, dancing and drama. It was not much different than the life of author F. Scott Fitzgerald, who spent that summer doing much the same in nearby Dellwood. White Bear Lake's connection to the prolific author runs deeper than many people realize, and this year, the White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) is hosting a speaking series to explore this connection at depth. Taught by local historian and writer Mary Jane LaVigne, the class series called “How to Write Like F. Scott Fitzgerald” will explore Fitzgerald's literary techniques through his short stories and discuss the historical details surrounding them. The class series was created in anticipation of the 14th annual International F. Scott Fitzgerald Conference, which will be centered in St. Paul in June and July 2017.
