City deems home on Sandra Lane unlivable; no charges yet BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

The open house also featured public safety information, rescue demonstrations and fire truck rides.
WHITE BEAR LAKE — There are no charges yet against the man who was living with two decomposing bodies on Sandra Lane, but the Police Department expects to turn the matter over to the Ramsey County Attorney’s office this week. According to Capt. Dale Hager with the White Bear Lake Police Department, family members are helping Robert Kuefler return to the house, which was declared uninhabitable Sept. 21 by the city’s housing inspector. “They are hiring a cleaning company as we speak,” Hager said. “We believe things are being taken care of at the house and we expect him to move back in.” The day after police discovered the bodies of an elderly woman and man in the home, located in the 4700 block of Sandra Lane, Code Enforcement Officer Jeff Rose placarded the residence stating it was not livable. He was escorted into the house with a police officer. “Conditions were unsanitary at the time,” Rose said. “Basically there were bodily fluids and lots of bugs; mostly flies and maggots.” There was no stench in the home, just the smell of cigarettes, added the building official. Rose said Kuefler was advised to hire a professional cleaning company to deal with the areas where the bodies were found. “Besides those areas, it was a normal house,” he said. “It SEE SANDRA LANE, PAGE 8A
Farm-to-school program makes lunchrooms fresh BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR
WHITE BEAR LAKE — Gone are the days of canned pears and peaches floating in sugary syrup on lunch room trays day after day. Over the last five years, a term called “farm-toschool” has rocked the school lunchroom boat in districts across the nation. Now, it is a national movement. White Bear Lake Schools is jumping on board. One of its closest and most familiar local farmers is Pine Tree Apple Orchard in Dellwood. From the end of September through January, students in the district will have the option to eat a variety of kinds of apples from just down the road or across the lake. The apples last in the orchard’s cold storage until mid-winter. Pine Tree Apple Orchard has been around since
1904 and is co-owned by six siblings who grew up eating their parent’s apples; Art and Dickie Jacobson bought the orchard in 1958. Several years ago, son Bill Jacobson began to approach districts with the apples. He remembered his dad had sold apples to schools long ago before it became popular for districts to have a “one-stop shop with vendors,” Jacobson said. His offer was accepted by the down-to-earth culture of today. He now sells apples to 19 districts. “I just put on a clean shirt,” Jacobson remembers of his meeting with White Bear Lake Schools staff. “I showed them my apples and everyone said ‘Yes.’” The district’s partnership with Pine Tree Apple Orchard has inspired new Nutrition Services Coordinator Bridget Lehn to expand the grassroots initiative SEE FARM TO SCHOOL, PAGE 8A
