There are two documents central to the formation of the United States—the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Each September, Constitution Week commemorates the formation and signing of the latter. It kicks off on Sept. 17, a Friday this year, on what is known as Constitution Day. This Sept. 17 also marks the 233rd anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution.

On that day in 1787, 39 delegates gathered at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to formally endorse the Constitution, the product of the four-month-long Constitutional Convention.

Constitution Week has been observed since 1955, initiated by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a lineagebased membership service organization for women who

are directly descended from a person involved in efforts towards American independence during the Revolutionary War. The organization has approximately 185,000 members nationwide and chapters across the country, including the St. Croix River Valley chapter in Stillwater and the Harriet G. Walker chapter in Shoreview.

Constitution Week is largely the culmination of the advocacy efforts on the part of the DAR. In the mid-1950s, DAR members petitioned Congress to dedicate a week of each year to commemorate the Constitution, and on Aug. 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the congressional resolution into law.

In 2002, President George W. Bush officially declared the inception of Constitution Week, setting aside Sept. 17-23 each year.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Big Wood Brewery has outgrown its space.

In a Sept. 8 press release, brewery owner Jason Medvec said the company's small footprint at 2222 Fourth St. can't accommodate its growth. After an extensive property search, the brewery found its next location on a historic parcel in Vadnais Heights.

The Vadnais Heights City Council approved a purchase agreement with Rumblestrip Holdings and Big Wood Brewery last week for a 3.25-acre property at the intersection of Vadnais Boulevard, Edgerton Street and Centerville Road.

The corner was once the home of Garceau Hardware and its Polaris dealership. The city purchased the parcel in 2015 and it's been vacant ever since.

Medvec, a White Bear resident, said the property is nearly four times the size of their current space. They expect to transition to the new location in 2022.

Vadnais Heights wanted a brewery. A task force made up of local residents, community leaders and business owners identified commercial beer making as the best use for Garceau Corner. City staff then began looking for a business person who wanted to turn the 1950s hardware store into a brewery.

Mahtomedi’s Baumann called up to Orioles

Mahtomedi native Mike Baumann was called up to the major leagues by the Baltimore Orioles Monday, Sept. 7, and quickly picked up his first big league victory.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound right-handed pitcher was summoned from the bullpen Tuesday night, Sept. 8, and pitched 3 1/3 innings of middle relief, allowing one run (unearned), in a 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals, at Camden Yards in Baltimore.

Baumann’s second relief stint did not go nearly as well. More on that later.

Against the Royals, he retired 11 of 14 batters, allowing a single, double and walk, striking out one. His mother, Leslie, and two brothers were in the stands.

“There was a lot of adrenaline,” Baumann said, in a report on mlb.com. “Looking back, I don’t even know if I remember much of what happened on the mound. But just the feeling, walking off the field after hearing the fans, that was a cool moment.”

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told mlb.com: “I just liked the aggressiveness in the strike zone. He challenged hitters. His pitch count was way down. He forced the action, and he has enough on his fastball to get it by guys and get some weak contact. So a really good first impression of Mike Baumann.”

On Sunday, Baumann gave up six runs in three innings against Toronto as the Blue Jays hammered the Orioles 22-7 in Baltimore. Toronto had 22

hits, including five home runs.

Baumann yielded four hits, including a homer, and two walks.

Baumann, who turned 26 on Friday, led Mahtomedi to a 19-1 record and a state tournament berth his senior year, 2014. In three seasons at Jacksonville University, he posted a 16-8 record and 3.17 ERA. He was a third-round draft pick by the Orioles in 2017.

In four minor league seasons, Baumann was 28-17 with a 3.35 earned-run-average and 362 strikeouts in 368 innings.

In 2019, he shared the Orioles minor league pitcher of the year award with another prospect. There was no minor league season in 2020. This season, he pitched at the A, AA, and AAA levels, posting a 4-3 record, 3.34 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 71 innings.

He was called up from Triple-A Norfolk, Virginia.

In his last start in Norfolk, he struck out seven and allowed one run over six innings, lowering his ERA to 2.00 in six starts. He was ranked No. 9 or 10 among Oriole prospects, and third among pitchers.

Lessons I learned

ERY FEW FAMILY businesses go longer than three generations. I have been reminded over the years by successful people of a quote, “Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations.” What it comes down to is the first generation works hard, the next generation has it a little easier, and by the third generation they have to roll up their sleeves and dig in and work as hard as the first generation.

Our son Carter has taken over a number of our newspapers with great success and I’m proud of him. I have reminded him of the quote.

THE OTHER DAY I was looking through my suggested column idea file and found “Lessons I Learned” from the April-May 2011 issue of Upsize magazine. Craig Kruckeberg, CEO of Spray Control Systems, Inc., wrote the following lessons in August 2006: “In 1999/2000 I became CEO, taking over from my father. I think we just broke a million at that point. My father didn’t teach. He didn’t sit me down and say, here’s what to do. I had to keep one eye on him and one eye on my job.

We used to have some serious fisticuffs.

There would be a million times when I’d walk About the out. I’d say I’m done. My mother would get in between us and tell us to work it out.

Town One thing I learned from my father was the Gene Johnson work ethic. He’d be down here on Saturday and Sunday. I started doing that. Last night I got home at 5:30, and everybody looked at me saying, are you sick?

At first, I would just buy advertising on the sly. Now I spend $22,000 a month on advertising, but my father was old school.

That first ad was $400, and we got calls. I kept telling him, people won’t just wake up with our phone number in their head.

He slowly brought me into it. He and mom would go to Arizona and leave me in charge, first for two weeks, then three weeks, then six weeks. It was do or die.

He said, don’t be spending a lot of money to buy equipment because if someone goes out of business, we’ll get the equipment cheaper. We’d buy spray paint and paint our own brackets, not powder-coat them like we do now.

If you’re good to me, I’ll be steadfast and loyal. I have vendors that go back for 22 years.

If you keep your books in order, you’re so much better off.

There are times you don’t want to look at your books because you’re sick to your stomach. But it’s better to know.

No matter what the size of the business, it’s all the same problems, just one more zero. I can’t look at the dollars because I’d be in the bathroom throwing up. You just have to look at it as one more zero.

We’ve just slowly grown, 20 to 22% a year. Now it’s a snowball rolling downhill. You do 20% growth, and then 20% again, and then you hit 40%, like we’re at now, and it gets kind of hazy.

I read about companies that are going to grow 256% and I say, OK, I want to talk to you, because how can you control that?

We’re up 40% this year over last year. We have a great product and it just takes time. We’re getting notoriety. Customers don’t want to talk to you when you’re small, because they need parts from you for 50 years.

I know a lot of people that want a quick million, but that’s not how it works. You don’t want that kind of growth. Growth has to come. I’ve learned you’ve got to be patient.”

A family business can be a wonderful experience and at the same time very difficult when it comes to time of transition.

I know firsthand mothers are good referees. Also, it can be difficult to have a bunch of family members in the operation, but if you do, job descriptions are going to have to be clear and one president or CEO is held accountable. I hope those in family businesses who are reading this will find it helpful and encouraging as Carter and I have.

GARY JOHNSON RETIRED from MSP Communications in July. In his final column he makes a point about social media and reminds us of the old maxim, “False knowledge is even more dangerous than ignorance.” He makes another point that we have grown to mistake opining and commentary for journalism.

In conclusion, he recommends seeking good information, support its best practitioners with your subscription and advertising, and keep up the good fight. It’s a job won for the better world.

AT THE LAST moment before Kathy and I were scheduled to be at the Letterpress Museum at the Minnesota State Fair, due to COVID-19 and the Delta variant increasing, we decided not to go. Our next scheduled visit on Sept. 2 was also canceled. The museum continues, but our health was a greater consideration.

Historic infrastructure bill will improve lives in Minnesota for generations

W

hen the U.S. Senate passed a once-in-a-generation bill to make historic and long-overdue investments in our nation’s crumbling infrastructure this month, we achieved something that has eluded our nation’s lawmakers for decades.

The strongly-bipartisan measure will mean people in Minnesota and across the country will soon see a transformative injection of funds to fix roads, bridges, highways, water systems, railroads, ports, and electric grids. It also $65 Legislator provides billion to bring quality, affordLingo able broadband networks to Tina Smith communities — especially those in rural America — that for too long have struggled to thrive without modern high-speed internet.

In Minnesota, it will jumpstart the economy and help push to completion hundreds of local projects in communities of all sizes and in every corner of the state. The resulting improvements will create and support good-paying jobs across the

country and bolster our nation’s efforts to combat climate change.

The need for infrastructure investment is clear. For decades, Minnesota has suffered from a lack of funding that has restrained efforts to modernize our systems, made travel less efficient, and hindered economic growth. In fact, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave Minnesota a C grade on its infrastructure report card.

Earlier this year, a top state transportation official told the Minnesota legislature that there are more than 800 bridges in need of repair or replacement in the next decade that are not part of Minnesota’s 10-year funding plan.

He also said that without additional funding, Minnesota will be in “unprecedented territory” in the coming years for the number of highways in poor condition.

Fortunately, the Senate-passed infrastructure bill responds to those needs by sending $4.5 billion to Minnesota for highway improvements, $302 million for bridge replacement and repairs, $856 million for our transit systems, and at least $100 million for broadband across the state.

That will mean that people in communities across Minnesota could see the funding necessary to more quickly finish long-needed upgrades to highways, roads, bridges and other projects.

While the infrastructure bill is historic, we still have work to do to make needed investments that give our nation the tools to succeed, cut taxes and lower costs for working families. Shortly after the infrastructure bill passed, the Senate also approved the broad outlines of our “Build Back Better” budget. Under that budget agreement, Congress will work this fall on detailed efforts to significantly improve our nation’s housing, education, childcare, and clean energy infrastructure as well as lowering prescription drug costs.

One of my top priorities will be to continue my push to transition our nation toward a clean energy future by enacting a clean electricity standard that over time achieves net-zero emissions in our electric sector. It will be central to our efforts to fight climate change, put the United States at the forefront of technology innovation, and create millions of good-paying jobs.

With passage of the infrastructure bill, we’re no longer just talking about infrastructure, we’re actually delivering results that will make life better for millions of Minnesotans, create a generation of jobs and economic growth, and position our country to succeed in the 21st Century.

My children have grown up in Mahtomedi with Paul’s children, first at St. Jude of the Lake and then on to the high school. Our sons played lacrosse together and recently spent some time together at St. John’s University.

It’s fair to say I’ve gotten to know Paul quite well over the years.

Paul has committed numerous volunteer hours to Mahtomedi schools, including serving as a trustee and current president of the Mahtomedi Area Educational Fund (MAEF). Paul has volunteered countless hours as a youth lacrosse coach over the years.

Like me, Paul has seen the best of Mahtomedi schools and is concerned the district is losing focus on academic excellence and preparing kids for the real world. Paul is concerned about the outflow of students in the

district to private schools. He understands the need to restore trust and regain the confidence in the Mahtomedi school board for all families in the district.

Paul Donna is a man of integrity and sound values, and I wholeheartedly endorse his run for a spot on the Mahtomedi school board.

I had the privilege to meet and work with both women during my years of service as a member and then chair of the school board. Kathleen Daniels served as the director of student support services during my tenure on the board and impressed me with her commitment to meet students

where they were, and insure they received the educational and support services necessary to their success, both in school and in life. I worked with Kathleen on the district’s Policy Committee, where we slogged together through the unglamorous work of reviewing and revising district policies and drafting and implementing new ones. Kathleen was always laser-focused in her efforts to insure that our district met the needs of every single child. On a personal note, I have much enjoyed Kathleen’s friendship and admire the warmth and compassion she extends to virtually everyone she meets. All of our children attended White Bear Lake Area Schools for their entire Pre-K through 12 educational careers, and Kathleen’s devotion to this school district is in part measured by the fact that she and her husband chose our schools for their own children.

I first met Chris Streiff Oji when she was the principal of Willow Lane Elementary

School, one of the district’s most diverse schools. Like Kathleen, Chris demonstrated a deep devotion to ensuring that all of "her" kids’ needs were met and they received all the supports necessary to ensure their success. Chris was a champion of Willow Lane’s Reading Buddies program, which utilized community volunteers to meet and read with kids on a weekly basis, thereby enhancing literacy education. Chris is a true advocate for all children!

Supporters of the White Bear Lake Area Schools will be well served by electing Kathleen Daniels and Chris Streiff Oji to the school board!

Ordinance to keep lake clean In the article regarding Priebe Lake in last week’s White Bear Press, Kyle Axtel told the City Council that the best way to deal with water quality in the lake

was for residents to keep grass clippings and leaves off of the street. He also said it would be fantastic if the city could find funding and staff to increase the frequency of street sweeping.

I’m one of a number of residents that live on Peppertree Pond in the city. I keep the street in front of my home clear of grass clippings, leaves and whatever debris that happens to be in the street. The water and whatever it flushes from the streets surrounding Peppertree Pond ends up in the pond. Rather than try and find funding and personnel to street sweep, what about an ordinance that property owners are responsible for keeping the street(s) bordering their property be clean, period? I see the large vacuum trucks cleaning out storm sewers etc. in the city and an ordinance like this might actually reduce cost for the city. It would surely be beneficial for water quality within the watershed.

King’s City says ‘its about time we move on’ After 39 years of serving the White Bear Lake community, King’s City, the iconic red-trimmed restaurant off Highway 61, has closed its doors for good. Once a Shakey’s Pizza, later a Pizza Hut before becoming King’s City, the singular building has sat at 3959 Linden St. since 1968. The business is owned by brothers Sam and Camy Ma. The family went on vacation back in August, but never ended up reopening the business; an interested party came in and purchased the property over a period of about two weeks. Sam was not comfortable sharing what the new buyer’s plans are for the property, but said, “It’s about time that we move on and do something different.

We were lucky enough to be in business for 39 years with the support of the community and our customers. The White Bear community has been really good to us. We have made a lot of friends and good memories.”

2 in a restroom by a customer in the 1100 block of County Road J and was turned into management. After deputies collected the weapon, the owner contacted them to start the process for its return.

• A White Bear Township man, 26, was arrested Sept. 4 in the 2600 block of First Street for disorderly conduct and taken to the detox center after the county jail refused to take custody of him due to his high level of intoxication.

• A tablet and cooler were reported stolen overnight Sept. 4-5 from a garage in the 1200 block of Bibeau Road.

Vadnais Heights • A Minneapolis woman, 25, and a Mounds View woman, 27, were cited Aug. 30 at the Vadnais Heights Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E for misdemeanor theft after loss prevention officers caught the two woman shoplifting. Both women were banned from the premises.

• White Bear Lincoln in the 3400 block of Highway 61 reported a 2020 Lincoln Navigator delivered to the dealership on Aug. 3 discovered missing from

the lot on Aug. 31. The business said there may have been an extra fob inside. The vehicle was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database and recovered Sept. 4 in Columbus by the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.

• A Maplewood man reported a grease gun and other items stolen from a toolbox inside an unlocked truck cab parked in a business lot in the 3200 block of Fanum Road overnight Sept. 1-2. Security video from the business shows a male walking around the business parking lot between 1:30 and 2:00 a.m. trying to access mostly locked vehicles and trailers.

White Bear Township • A resident in the 2600 block of Martin Way reported outgoing mail stolen from her mailbox overnight Aug. 29-30 after she placed envelopes containing checks inside the box on Aug. 29 and raised the flag. On Monday morning, the flag was down and the envelopes were gone.

Birchwood • A Birchwood woman was cited at 7:43 a.m. Aug. 16 on the 700 block of Hall Avenue for failure to stop at a stop sign after Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies observed her roll through the sign at Jay Street and Hall Avenue. The driver told deputies she lived nearby and always drives through that intersection without stopping and admitted it was a bad habit.

• A suspicious male reported for lurking around the side of a Wildwood Avenue residence at 2:59 a.m. Aug. 20 turned out to be an Xcel Energy employee trying to gain access to the complainant’s gas meter, after the meter man called in stating he was out trying to check the meter.

Grant • A Minnesota motorist was cited for driving without a license at 7:34 a.m. Aug. 15 in the 8000 block of 75th

Street N. after deputies westbound on County Road 12 observed him pull out of the Mahtomedi High School lot to head eastbound while speeding and passing other vehicles in a no-passing zone. During the traffic stop, the driver presented an identification-only card and not a driver’s license. After identifying the driver through the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension files, deputies verbally warned him about his speeding and illegal passing.

• Deputies conducted a traffic stop Aug. 17 for stop sign violation in the 5000 block of Ash Street. Deputies conducted another traffic stop at 1:08 a.m. Aug. 18 on Hallam Avenue S. and Hilton Trail N. and executed a K-9 search of the vehicle.

• Deputies were dispatched out at 7:35 a.m. Aug. 18 in the 1000 block of Lincolntown Avenue following a report of someone who was violating the city’s new sprinkling ban.

• Deputies were dispatched out to a sailboat that had tipped over on White Bear Lake at 3:34 p.m. Aug. 15.

Later that evening, deputies issued a verbal warning to a motorboat operator underway with a passenger riding on the transom.

• A suspicious vehicle parked in the east campus lot of Century College in the 3000 block of Century Avenue at 6:57 a.m. Aug. 17 turned out not to have been stolen.

When deputies offered to “trespass” the occupant of the vehicle from the premises, the college security supervisor said he didn’t need the subject to leave the area — just wanted to confirm the vehicle wasn’t stolen.

• A Minnesota motorist was cited Aug. 15 on Highway 36 for speeding 75 mph in a 55 mph zone by deputies on stationary patrol, who clocked him on radar.

• An unidentified driver was arrested at 1:12 a.m. Aug. 17 on westbound Highway 36 at Hilton Trail N. and transported to the Washington County jail.

Edward James Lane Edward James Lane was born on March 30, 1947 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of James and Mary (Page) Lane. Edward graduated from White Bear Lake High School and then Attended Huron College, graduated with a degree in Physical Education.

Ed met and married Susan Heil, their union was blessed with three sons, Patrick, Chad and Robert. In 1969, the couple moved their family to Monticello, Minnesota. Ed would spend the next several years teaching with the Monticello School District elementary students.

He loved teaching and coaching! His time with the “Youth” was precious and he enjoyed the different personalities that each student brought to his day.

He helped coach football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, marching band and honor guard over the years. Ed loved to be busy, so he also ran the summer baseball program.

When he was not teaching or coaching, Ed and Susan volunteered at St. Henry’s and spent time with a group of fellow teachers and their spouses, meeting every Friday night. This group as they became more “experienced” in life named themselves the Geriatric Gang. Ed loved adventures, often surprising the family by having them all pile in the car and heading off on a destination. The family spent numerous trips in Duluth, the western coast or up north fishing, relaxing in the boat.

“Safety Ed” was the father-in-law that cared for his sons’ wives, as if they were his own children.

His pride and joy were his three grandsons.

Even though he was always busy, he shared his loving, comical, personality with others, being the selfless soul that he was.

Ed passed away on Friday, August 27, 2021 at his home. He was 74 years old. He was welcomed in Heaven by his greatest catch, Susan; his parents; and his two brothers, James Warren Lane Jr. and Jeffrey Lane.

He is survived by his three sons and their families, Patrick Lane of Monticello, Chad Lane and his wife, Nicole and their son Eddie of Becker, and Bob Lane and his wife, Chris and their sons Garett and James of Becker.

Funeral services have been held.

Stephen D. Vadnais Stephen D. Vadnais, age 70, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Monday, September 6, 2021 due to complications of aggressive cancer treatment.

He was born on March 14, 1951 in St. Paul, Minnesota, son of the late Charles and Florence Vadnais.

Steve was born and raised in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. After high school, he owned and operated Steve’s Mobil Gas Station then moved on to sales at Armor Screw Company, both in Minnesota.

Steve’s sales job led him to the Oshkosh area, where he eventually met Ron Felker and became co-owner of “Mabel Murphy’s” in downtown Oshkosh. “Mabels” has been Steve’s calling for many years. He was naturally gifted in the hospitality industry where he enjoyed making memories with all of those who entered. Many knew him as “Steve” or “Big Guy”, a man who had a permanent smile on his face, a joke or two up his sleeve, a not so smooth dancer, and the man with the hidden “Golden Horseshoe”. He was also a master of the cribbage board, amongst many other notable qualities. Steve prided himself in being an avid hunter and fisherman, of which his daughter, Alayna, says is “the best hunting buddy of all time”.

He met and married Linda Krings on November 28,1987. Years later, they welcomed daughters, Abbey and Alayna, known as “the twins”. Both of his girls were his constant pride and joy.The family enjoyed traveling to the national parks together.

Most will remember Steve by his smile and his response when asked how he was. He would reply in a booming voice… “EXCELLENT”.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Vadnais; daughters Abbey and Alayna Vadnais; sisters Julaine (Vadnais)Williams and Patty (Vadnais) Walczak; brothers Mike (Shelly) Vadnais, and Tim Vadnais; sisters-inlaw Barbara Harrison, Jean (Joe) Wiegand, Patty (Jeff) Allen, Mary Darling, mother-in-law Marjorie Krings; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Charles and Florence Vadnais; his brother-in-law Tom Walczak; his father-in-law William Krings and sister-inlaw Joan Domke.

A memorial is being established for Cancer Research in Steve’s name.

Gerhardt H. Pareigat, 95, of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota went to his heavenly home on September 3, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Baltz; daughter Monica (Dean) Held; son Thomas (Kim) Pareigat; grandchildren Andrea (Corey) Robideau, Jonathan (Katie) Held, David Held, Lauren (Khoi) Dao, Marissa Pareigat; 6 great-grandchildren and many extended relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife, Clara, in 2006. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, Sept. 17, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Eagle Brook Church, White Bear Campus, 2401 Buffalo Street, White Bear Lake, MN 55110. County Road F resurfacing Work will begin next week to resurface County Road F between McKnight Road and East County Line Road in White Bear Lake and White Bear Township. The road will be closed to through traffic and motorists should use alternate routes when possible.

Resurfacing is expected to take four weeks to complete.

The city of White Bear Township has been replacing the water main on County Road F from Bellaire Avenue to East County Line Road this summer.

The replacement is expected to be complete

by Tuesday when resurfacing begins.

She said that before participating, there were a lot of things about the community she didn’t know, despite being out and about a lot. “I believe that the best way to be effective in all aspects of our lives is to practice continual learning,” she said. “What I learned from being enrolled in the Leadership Tomorrow course was invaluable.”

Have you ever wondered how community resources and events such as the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society, or how Marketfest and the Lake Links Trail Project came to be? They are just a few of the jewels that help make our area great, and they all came about through community leaders.

For many, leadership is innate. Others acquire leadership skills through their professions, education or life’s activities.

Emerging leaders acquire the tools to maximize their strengths, while understanding their motivations and growth opportunities.

Leaders learn what makes local businesses, governments and nonprofits tick. Then they become prepared to engage in the many arenas that make their communities work.

To this end, the Greater White Bear Lake Community Foundation (GWBLCF), partnering with the White Bear Lake Rotary, White Bear Country Inn/Rudy’s Redeye Grill and IX2 Consulting, provides leadership guidance through Leadership Tomorrow, a program it created in 2017.

The GWBLCF and Leadership Tomorrow represent all seven communities surrounding White Bear Lake: Birchwood, Dellwood, Mahtomedi, White Bear Lake, White Bear Township and Willernie.

The idea for the Leadership Tomorrow program came about as GWBLCF asked for input about community needs through a listening session with representatives from eight different service organizations.. One respondent said the community needed to get ready for new people to lead, said Kevin Donovan, community track lead for Leadership Tomorrow. “We asked who those new leaders could be, and that was the premise from which Leadership Tomorrow sprang,” he said.

In 2018, Leadership Tomorrow offered the first cohort session that prepares business and civic leaders through examples,

networking and mentoring to impact the community in positive ways. So far, Leadership Tomorrow has produced three cohorts with 18 graduates each. Of the 54 graduates, 21 came from business, 15 from education, 11 from nonprofits, six from government and one from the faith community.

The 18 graduates were evenly split between men and women. The graduating ages were between 27 and 65 years, and 25% of graduates were people of color, said Eunice Cote, GWBLCF board member and Leadership Tomorrow Steering Committee member. “It was a good representation of people who live and work in the community,” she said.

The fourth cohort is about to start; registrations will be accepted until Sept. 30.

In-person, one-on-one coaching and assessments with the cohort will begin in November. In January, the group will launch its 10-month in-person group programming that will include an overnight retreat at the White Bear Country Inn. The cohort will meet once a month for half-day sessions held at different sites throughout the community.

Each monthly session will split its focus into two parts — leadership and community topics. Leadership sessions will include understanding each person’s leadership style and tips on leading with clarity and building influence. Community topics include history, demographics, diversity, environmental stewardship and economic and business development.

Activities are different in the cohorts.

Past sessions have toured City Hall before meetings and continued their session in council chambers, Donovan said. One group toured the police station, where Police Chief Julie Swanson talked to members. Other past presenters included representatives of nonprofit organizations and local businesses. School district leaders and local government leaders have also visited the sessions, Donovan said.

Youth from the Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps recently helped the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society preserve the historic Fillebrown House in White Bear Lake.

The week-long project included preservation of windows and other exterior and interior features of the historic house.

Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps introduces young adults to the field of historic preservation through hands-on training. Their mission is to develop enduring workforce and life skills through service learning in historic preservation and community stewardship.

A larger scale production brewery is planned with an even larger public tap room than the one in White Bear. Medvec intends to make the new location a "true destination brewery." He also hinted at food trucks, fire pits, live music and green space as part of the landscape.

"My goal is to create a community-centered venue where there is always something exciting happening and where everyone feels welcome, building off what we achieved in White Bear Lake."

The brewery owner credits the downtown location, the dedication of the craft beer company's people and community support as key to growing Big Wood into a notable Minnesota brand. The business model has always been community oriented, said Medvec, who ran an advertising agency

in White Bear before going into the beer business. Medvec is also a guitarist for The Devon Worley Band, which has opened for some of country music's biggest stars.

"This community has been our rock," he noted, of the city of White Bear Lake. "The move is bittersweet and we thank everyone who has supported our efforts and our growth. We have made many wonderful friendships and exceptional business partners in White Bear Lake. We intend to continue a strong relationship with both."

Big Wood Brewery was founded in 2009 in Vadnais Heights as a recession side project at a wood flooring business.

Vadnais Heights Mayor Heidi Gunderson said she's thrilled the brewery is coming to Garceau's Corner, a place that served as the city's original downtown for decades. "They have a wonderful vision to transform the corner into a beautiful space," said the mayor.

DAR members nationwide remain strong advocates for the celebration of Constitution Week to this day. According to the organization, the purpose of the annual observance is to “emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; inform people

that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation of our way of life; and encourage the study of historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution.”

“The framers created a Constitution that translated into law the ideals upon which our nation was built,” said DAR President General

Denise Doring VanBuren.

“Their vision was so forwardthinking that their words still guide us today. No American history education can be complete without a thorough understanding of the impact the Constitution has had on the lives of American citizens past and present.”

Traditionally, DAR chapters across the country have

celebrated Constitution Week by supplying classrooms with flags and reference materials, creating displays in public areas like libraries and courthouses, obtaining proclamations from public officials, and distributing copies of the Constitution to educate the public about the principles on which the U.S. was founded.

A special event typically rings in the week-long celebration—literally. The DAR encourages churches, firehouses, schools and municipal buildings, as well as individuals, to ring bells for one minute as a part of “Bells Across America,” 3:30 p.m.

Could flowers return to Mahtomedi next spring?

If millions of flowers are allowed to bloom next spring and summer, Mahtomedi could well be in the position to hold a parade to rival the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena — only with floats made from billions of hosta petals and geranium blooms.

Yes, citizens of Mahtomedi and Birchwood Village could be overwhelmed with flowers, following the Mahtomedi City Council’s action at its Sept. 7 meeting to pass a resolution approving the 2021 deer population management program for the city. Council also approved an agreement with the Metro Bowhunters Resource Base to conduct deer hunt activities in 2021 on selected city-owned parcels of land.

Armed with written permission from private land owners, bow hunters will also be allowed to conduct deer herd culling activities on private land adjacent to cityowned land involved in the hunt.

Following a helicopter survey last winter, city staff identified three areas of heavy deer concentration within Mahtomedi, said Public Works Director Bob Goebel. “In the survey, 45 of the 99 deer found in Mahtomedi were concentrated in the north end of town, near the Briarwood nature area,” Goebel said. That area has been designated as Zone 1 for the hunt.

The Wedgewood area, which is adjacent to Birchwood Village, has been designated as Zone 2 for hunting purposes. Some Wedgewood residents have given informal permission for hunters to enter their properties, while other residents said they didn’t want hunters on their property at all.

Katherine Abbott Park, along with the neighborhoods to its south on Robert Court, Edith Avenue and Florence Avenue, has been designated as Zone 3. During the hunt, entrances to the city park would be

signed, Goebel said.

By a vote of 3-2 (Mayor Jud Marshall and Council Member Richard Brainerd opposed), council approved an amendment to the hunt resolution to add Bevins Lane as an adjacent property to Katherine Abbott Park in Zone 3. “I see this deer management program as an evolving program, and I don’t think we should make amendments tonight until we have bow hunters’ input,” Brainerd said.

A Robert Court resident attending the meeting said that what the neighborhood has seen over the past five years has been plenty of deer — but no flowers in anybody’s garden.

A Bevins Lane resident since 1974 said that the deer traffic has become much more plentiful over the years, lacking natural predators in this habitat. They’re more emboldened and have eaten things they never touched before, leaving gardens more damaged than ever, she said. “I use Liquid Fence by the gallon — so much that I think I’ll buy stock in the company,” the resident said. Lack of flowers isn’t the only worry: chronic wasting disease is also of concern, she said.

“I don’t know how many times neighbors can keep coming to us council members about this issue before we do something about it,” said Council Member Jane Schneeweis. “This is one of the biggest issues I’ve gotten complaints about, and I’m ready to do something about it.”

Other action from the Sept. 7 meeting: • Citizens of Mahtomedi will continue to have their residential areas, businesses, parks and other public property patrolled 24/7 by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) after council approved a law enforcement agreement with Washington County, effective Jan. 1, 2022 through 2026. The previous agreement ran from 2017-2021. WCSO deputies will enforce state statutes and city ordinances; conduct traffic enforce-

ment through the use of radar, laser and taser; provide criminal investigative and crime lab services; respond to police, medical, fire and other emergencies; provide dispatching and communication services; and complete license inspections and background checks as required by law and other services.

Mahtomedi’s total annual contract cost for 2022 will be about $5.72 million for five full-time equivalent deputies sharing duties in Birchwood, Dellwood, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie.

The county will bill Mahtomedi on twice yearly for providing these services.

• Polling places will be ready for voters on Nov. 2, now that council has appointed election judges for its two precincts. Precinct 1 is at the District Education Center, 1520 Mahtomedi Ave., and Precinct 2 is at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 900 Stillwater Road. On the ballot will be a school district levy question and candidates for school board and Mahtomedi City Council.

• Drivers around Mahtomedi have almost a year to prepare for major traffic disruptions on 1.3 miles of TH244/CSAH 12 as the Minnesota Department of Transportation turns the major arterial that runs through the center of town back to the county. Kevin Peterson, project manager and engineer for the Washington County Public Works Department, presented council with an overview of the improvements planned for CSAH 12.

Turnback work will include full-depth pavement improvement; the replacement of a steel arch culvert; a pedestrian median refuge between East Shore Place and the Aldi store; a causeway between the lakes to Wildwood Road, Birchwood Road and Lincolntown Avenue; and 11-foot driving lanes and a continuous off-road trail from Century Avenue. “We can’t lose sight of the ongoing need for communication, especially with road clo-

sures coming up. We need to have some answers and a good communication plan,” Brainerd said. Look for a construction staging open house to be held during late winter or early spring. “We need to have the same expectations for walkers and bikers as we do for drivers,” said Council Member Jeff Ledermann.

• Washington County Commissioners Fran Miron and Stan Karwoski presented council with a plaque commemorating the cooperation between Willernie and Mahtomedi during the CSAH 12 improvements that recently took place through the communities’ downtown area. County roads use no public property tax levy dollars, but receive funding from state aid and various funding sources, Karwoski said. Diligence on the part of county staff found grant funding to pay for amenities such as sidewalks and street lights. “It ended up being a reasonable project, though engineers were challenged to keep roads and businesses open,” he said. The opening of the improved road timed well with the reopening of the reconstructed library, he said.

• In thanking the public for its input during the CSAH 12 project through downtown, Miron noted Mahtomedi’s unique position of being represented by two county commissioners. Only two cities are split between commissioner districts, he said; the other city is Woodbury. Miron said he expected that upcoming redistricting would leave Mahtomedi with only one commissioner.

The council next meets at 7 p.m.

They lost to Elk River 4-3 and blanked Duluth East 7-0. Annika Munson at No. 1 and Mari Meger at No. 2 each won four matches, each improving to 9-1.

Boys soccer: Zephyrs start year 6-0 Mahtomedi has rolled to a 6-0 start, including a 2-1 win over St. Thomas Academy on their conference opener Thursday with goals by Leonardo De La Torre and Yassin Hussein. The Zephyrs have beaten Duluth Denfeld 4-2, Chisago Lakes 4-0, Columbia Heights 3-2, St. Croix Prep 4-0 and Fridley 8-0. They are ranked No. 5 in Class 2A, the middle of three classes.

Girls soccer: Zephyrs lose to Woodbury, then win twice Woodbury handed Mahtomedi its first loss 3-1 on Sept. 2 and the Zephyrs (4-1) bounced back to beat Visitation 2-1 and Orono 5-1 last week. “They outworked us. It was a good experience for us,” said coach David Wald about Woodbury (3-2). Katelyn Beulke scored on a free kick from 30 yards.

Against Visitation (2-3-1), Campbelle Waldspurger broke a 1-1 tie in the 68th minute, assisted by Beulke. Audrey Barry scored in the first half off a pass from Kaila Och. Goalie Paige Janssen stopped five six shots. Against Orono (2-2-1), Beulke and Waldspurger booted two goals each while Barry assisted on three goals and scored the last one.

Volleyball: Zephyrs start season 1-3 Mahtomedi has a 1-3 record, with a win over Cretin-Derham Hall 20-25, 26-25, 25-17, 1825, 15-9 on Sept. 2. Lily Chuhel had 14 kills and five aces, Layla Gile nine kills, Camryn Petersen 35 assists and Evie Stevens five aces. Zephyrs Girls Swim & Dive 2021 Season Begins

The Mahtomedi Girls Swim & Dive team kicked off their 2021 season at the East Metro Conference Relays on Aug. 26, with a strong finish coming in at second-place.

In the first dual-meet of the season Sept.

2, the Zephyrs beat the South St. Paul Packers 95 – 71. They finished first in seven of the Varsity events: 200 Yard Medley Relay (Emmerson Buckley, Hannah Drecktrah, Ella Matson, Ruppel); 200 Yard Freestyle (Adriel Showers); 200 Yard IM (Skylar Gillow Clowser); 50 Yard Freestyle (Elizabeth Hansen); 100 Yard Butterfly (Gillow Clowser); 100 Yard Freestyle (Showers); and 500 Yard Freestyle (Buckley). The Packer’s Diving team was able to hold their own, but with the depth and strength of divers on the Zephyrs team, Mahtomedi was able to overcome SSP’s top diver.

In the second dual-meet Sept. 9, the Zephyrs were defeated by the Hastings Raiders with the final score of 84 – 102.

Mahtomedi placed first in the Varsity 50 Yard Freestyle (Hansen), and at least second and third in most of their events, while the JV squad also did well winning first in seven of their races. Adding to the point total for the Zephyrs were the Varsity divers in first, third, and fifth places, (Alix Fox, Katherine Schneider, and Steinman, respectively).

The swimmers and divers are looking forward to and exciting season, and seeing their families and friends cheering in-person again.

The 5-foot-6, 215-pound fullback scored from five, one, and one yards in a 23-21 loss to Blaine, and from four, two, 22 and one yard in a 27-0 win over Roseville, while totaling 228 yards in 50 carries. “He is hard to stop down there,” coach Ryan Bartlett assessed, “because he squats 530 pounds and never stops moving his feet. He is low and runs hard.”

Michael Hoffman was 34th, Nate Tobeck 43rd and Sador Wondeson 46th among 174 runners. “We are really strong up front with Ernie and Luke, and have a nice pack of runners from our third to sixth,” said coach Dan Kovacich. In the Steve Hoag Invitational at Anoka on Thursday, the Bears rested their top three and still placed second of 13 teams, behind Minnetonka. “I put a challenge to our 4-7 runners,” Kovacich said. “I wanted to see what they can dowithout our big guns up front.”

Swimming: Bears lose to Raptors, Raiders White Bear Lake lost its first two conference meets to East Ridge 96-84 on Sept. 2 and Roseville 99-82 last Thursday. East Ridge won all the events except diving, which Gianna McLeod of the Bears won with 217.25 points. Lucy Borofka placed second in backstroke, and Emma Masso third in butterfly.

Against Roseville, Borofka won the 50 freestyle (26.20) and tied for first in the 100 freestyle (1:08.28). Lily Jenkins won the 100 free (1:02.27) and McLeod took diving (206.40).

Girls soccer: Bears fall to Cougars; Eckerle powers two wins Lauren Eckerle scored all five goals as White Bear Lake defeated Two Rivers (formerly Henry Sibley) 3-2 in overtime and Mounds View 2-0 last Tuesday and Wednesday. Goalie Autumn Maki made six saves in the shutout. Eckerle has eight of the team’s 21 goals. Alexis Smith assisted on two against Two Rivers. The Bears (5-2) were shut down by unbeaten Centennial 4-0 there Saturday. The Bears trailed 1-0 before the Cougars got three goals in the last 20 minutes. Centennial’s new coach is Christa Carlson, former Bears standout.

Boys soccer: Bears lose to Mustangs, win Hastings White Bear Lake was on the short and long ends of blowouts over the weekend. The Bears (2-3) lost to Mounds View 6-0 Friday night. “We made individual errors all over the field and were punished for each of them,” coach Karl Jende said. Then the Bears beat Hastings 7-1 Saturday night.

“We dusted ourselves off and showed our character,” Jende said. The Bears got a left-footed finish by Gavin Rogers

and a right-footed finish by Connor Moser for a 2-1 halftime lead. In the second half, Rogers scored on a penalty kick, Caleb Anderson delivered two straight goals, and Ryan Dufresne and Snow Ball capped it off. Unfortunately, junior defender Teagen Giese broke his leg in a collision with a Hastings player with 1:52 left. "A positive result, but a sour ending," Jende said.

Tennis: Bears 4-3, solid in doubles White Bear Lake has a 4-3 record after beating Mounds Park Academy and Cretin-Derham Hall, each 5-2, and losing to South St. Paul and Roseville Area, each 4-3, in their last four outings. The Bears are 17-11 in doubles points and 8-13 in singles. Alexina Erickson, junior who’s been the team’s top player for two years but, playing No. 1 singles, didn’t win a match in 2020, picked up her first two varsity wins against MPA and SSP. Lucy Saari is 4-1 at No. 4 singles. Alex Reiland is 5-2 in doubles with four different partners.

Girls cross country: Bears in mid-pack The White Bear Lake girls finished 10th among 21 teams at Rosemount on Sept. 3 and ninth of 15 at Faribault last Friday. At Rosemount, Katelyn Porter placed 28th, Maggie Blanding 32nd, Madie Bystrom 47th, Ally Mattson 81st and Maia Nebo 91st among 166 runners. Highland Park won. At Faribault, Blanding churned to an 11th place finish good for a medal. Porter was 33rd, Bystrom 48th, Mattson 58th and Victoria Humphry 72nd among 102 runners. Stillwater won. Melissa Gacek, assistant coach, is temporarily head coach with Christine Thomas on maternity leave. “The season is generating excitement for runners, coaches, and fans,” said Gacek, “as we are now able to enjoy and adjust to larger competitions.”

Bears cruise at Roseville 27-0

A dominating defensive performance by White Bear Lake and four touchdowns from Anthony Lewis-Royal lifted the Bears to a 27-0 win at Roseville Area Thursday evening.

The Bears (1-1) held the Raiders (0-2) to 48 net yards, 11 passing and 37 rushing. Matt Sloan made three quarterback sacks.

“The defense was outstanding. We played downhill and physical,” coach Ryan Bartlett said. Asked about leaders, he noted, “Sloan was really good, Zach Pratt was tough on the D-Line and Chris Heim was everywhere once again.”

Lewis-Royal capped four Bear drives with touchdown runs of two, four, 22 and one yard, while rolling up 101 yards in 19 carries. The 5-foot9, 225-pound fullback has scored all seven of the Bears touchdowns in two games. “I don’t think I’ve seen seven touchdowns (from one guy) in two games before,” said Bartlett, in his 10th season.

The Bears offense mustered a modest 259 yards — 184 rushing, 75 passing — but the defense kept giving them short fields. A fumble recovery

by Devin Madden set up one of the touchdowns. Wally Venter kicked three conversions and the Bears failed on one two-point run.

Connor Gerrell completed seven of nine passes for 75 yards with one intercepted. Alex Lockwood caught four for 58 yards. Matthew Currier carried eight times for 41 yards and

caught a pass for 12. Reyshaun Brakes gained 24 yards on three carries.

The Bears will host Mounds View (1-1) next Friday.

Football: Bears storm back but lose to Blaine 23-21 on last play On the verge of being blown out at home, White Bear Lake instead turned their season opener into a thriller that went down to the final play. Down 20-0, the Bears scored on their three possessions against Blaine to take the lead, only to lose on a lastsecond field goal 23-21, at home Sept 2.

“Tough way to lose, but I like the way we battled back,” coach Ryan Bartlett said. “This group is tough and goes hard, and I think there are good days ahead.”

Anthony Lewis-Royal scored all three touchdowns for the Bears, capped by a one-yard plunge with 1:10 left for the lead, at the end of a 92-yard drive. On the two previous plays, Connor Gerrell passed to Rayshawn Brakes for 25 yards (on fourth-and-seven) and Nick Svir for 29 yards. Michael McCormack’s third conversion put the Bears ahead 21-20.

Trying to protect that hard-earned lead, the Bears pressured Blaine quarterback A.J. Kaul into a throwaway, then got a sack by Tollowalope Oyekunie, but Kaul dodged another would-be sacker on third down and hit Preston Meyers with a 47-yard bomb, leading to Kendall Stadden’s 31yard field goal on the final play.

Lewis-Royal carried 29 times for 127 yards, Matt Sloan picked up 47 yards in 10 carries, and Gerrell completed five of 12 for 86 yards.

Lewis-Royal scored from the one with nine minutes left. The Bears forced a punt and started their 92-yard drive with 5:01 left.

For Blaine, Kaul completed 14 of 27 for 243 yards, with a 36-yard touchdown to Jordan Reynolds, and had a four-yard TD run. Meyers gained 91 yards in 18 carries, including a five-yard TD.

Asked about the social aspects, Schmit said it was difficult to interact with athletes from other countries due to COVID precautions, but she was able to get acquainted with a few at the pool and dining hall. One of the Paralympic traditions is trading pins. “I had a ton of fun pin trading with lots of different countries,” she said.

Schmit is homeschooled while she attends Century College as a postsecondary enrollment option (PSEO) student.

She hopes to swim in the next Paralympics in Paris in 2024.

Summer Schmit dives into the water for one of her races in Tokyo.

Grant resident Summer Schmit, Team USA swimmer who competed in the Paralympics in Tokyo, reached the finals in three of her five events there.

“It was a wonderful experience!

It was incredible to meet and compete with some of the best athletes in the world,” Schmit stated in an email. She was satisfied with the outcome. “I went into the Games with a goal of making finals in at least a few events.”

The 17-year-old member of St. Croix Swim Club placed fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2:38.64, sixth in the 100 butter-

fly in 1:12.95, and seventh in the 400 free in 4:56.92, all personal bests. She didn’t reach finals in 100 breaststroke or 100 freestyle.

The Paralympics took place Aug. 24 through Sept. 2; 163 countries were represented.

Schmit, who has no right hand due to a congenital disarticulation of the wrist, explained that Paralympics has 14 classifications to keep the playing field fair. The S1 to S10 classifications are physical impairments, S11 to S13 are visual impairment and S14 is for intellectual impairments. The lower the number, the more severe the disability.
