An apple orchard a day The mornings have a crispness in the air that signals fall is quickly approaching. What better way to celebrate the new season than visiting some local apple orchards? There are several in the area that offer different varieties of apples, produce and other goods, as well as entertainment.

Pine Tree Apple Orchard Pine Tree Apple Orchard is located near Pine Tree Lake in White Bear Lake. The trees were planted 1904. Art and Dickey Jacobson purchased the orchard in 1958. The orchard is located at 450 Apple Orchard Road. The large orchard spans more than 300 acres. In 1963, the Jacobsons purchased an additional orchard in Preston. The orchard is currently

growing 25 varieties of apples. A full list can be found on the website at pinetreeappleorchard. com. During the summer, pick-your-own strawberries is offered. Starting in September, Pine Tree Apple Orchard offers a variety of entertainment, including pony rides, wagon rides, a corn maze and pick-your-own pumpkins. In addition to apples, there are bakery products, fresh cider, gifts and more on offer. The salesroom building is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS

Riding the gales of September Sailboarding enthusiasts take advantage of the strong, brisk wind gusts that arrived on White Bear Lake along with the month of September. Because of the strong and unpredictable wind gusts, some kitesurfers switched to sailboards to better manage the conditions.

In a world full of uncertainty where stress and anxiety levels seem to climb higher and higher every day, north metro residents who wish to deepen their spirituality may fi nd a hidden gem. Christos Center for Spiritual Formation has been located off Holly Drive in Lino Lakes since 1990, but many people pass by on Birch Street, completely unaware it is there. The 51-acre site consists of a perfect blend of woods, wetlands and wildlife. Robin Fraser, Tending the Holy coordinator, described the property as a “little sanctuary” where visitors will fi nd places to walk, sit and even get lost in a labyrinth. “It’s a place where people can come and be outside and not worry about everything else that is going on,” said LaDonna Olson, spiritual director and director of administrative services. “It is open and available to anyone who wants a quiet place to get away and connect with nature.” PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS

CHRISTOS CENTER: Sanctuary in the heart of the suburbs FROM PAGE 1A

Joann Nesser founded the concept of Christos back in 1978. After attending silent retreats led by Catholic nuns and spiritual directors, she thought contemplative spirituality was missing a piece in her own Lutheran traditions and suggested a similar retreat for women at her church. By 1985, a core group of women expanded to an ecumenical community of almost 50 men and women, and the group formed into a nonprofit ministry. The Lino Lakes location celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2018. Christos Centers are also located Fargo and Chicago. Christos Center is well known for Tending the Holy, a twoyear program that trains individuals to become spiritual directors. This year, 40 people have signed up to become spiritual directors, which

is more than double the number from last year. Not surprising, online participation has skyrocketed. Brian Norsman, pastor of spiritual formation at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, completed the Tending the Holy program in 2018 and has served on the Christos board since this past spring. He believes now, more than ever, people are “hungry for something deeper” in their lives. “In this time of uncertainty, fear and anxiety, people are turning inwardly more in their lives. The pandemic has forced people to slow down,” Norsman explained. “We live in a society where we are living so fast, and being able to take that pause and be still, be silent and listen, that’s important. People are looking for something deeper in their soul.” New this year, Christos Center has launched Tending the Call, which is a

Protect local business

S

TATE AND LOCAL governments are beginning to look at ways to help and protect local business. They are finding ways to provide information to the consumer via the local newspaper and websites, which in turn helps the newspaper survive with advertising. We have seen some larger companies buy full page ads allowing small businesses in the community to get a small ad promoting their goods and services. This is a little unusual, but they are conscious of supporting good local communication and journalism. Our subscriptions have increased. We even received some extraordinary subscription support for journalism. It’s all very much appreciated during this time when so many businesses are closed or have decreased revenue. Grocery stores, lumber yards, hardware, liquor stores and real estate are doing quite well, but some of them who are doing well have even ceased their advertising program. RESTAURANTS HAVE HAD it tough with limited seating inside, and in many cases the consumer has not wanted to go inside for About the dining, thereby limiting sales for the eateries. Ultimately there will Town be a pent-up demand for goods and when the virus is conGene Johnson services trolled and that could be months away. Many of the big box stores are coming through fine, but the mom and pop stores are at risk. Do what you can to support your local businesses. MY WIFE KATHY’S 77-year old gallbladder acted up last month, and we first thought it might be a heart attack. We appreciated our local EMTs for their promptness, quick examination, courtesy and experience. After a one-way trip to Regions Hospital, she waited in line for an operating room. A couple of days later with laparoscopic surgery, her non-warrantied gallbladder was removed with four small glued up incisions. She is well underway to recovery. In Minnesota and Wisconsin, we have some great medical teams and hospitals with the latest technology. This is just another benefit of high-tech states like Minnesota and Wisconsin. WHEN YOU LOOK to the classified pages of this newspaper and see more help wanted ads, you know the economy is on its way to recovery. On the other hand, you have to mix it with national statistics that indicate one in five small businesses will not survive during this pandemic. More and more consumers are recognizing this and making their buying decisions with hometown businesses whenever possible. Support them so they will be there when you need them. OVER THE YEARS public television has provided pre-school education through Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers and other programs. I wonder if there is a place for public television to assist public and private schools in their programming now that so many children are at home during the week. There could be some national standards for various grade levels that could enhance learning in this very upsetting time. I think without a doubt there are more televisions in homes across the country than there are computers per household. IN THE BUSINESS community, webinars are very popular and effective and now we are doing a lot of Zoom meetings in lieu of in-person meetings. Our technology is advancing rapidly. We just have to learn how to use it in effective ways. IN READING A daily devotion from author Steven Moore, I really enjoy what he said about Timothy 6 telling us to flee from distractions. He says, if you consider social media, which is pretty much gossip, a distraction, then watch the hours that you are in front of the screen per day or per week. Is that what we call healthy living? Also check on how many times a day you reach for the cell phone. It just seems to be taking over our life. As parents we need to guide our children in disciplines like this. Remember, the best way to teach is by example. Gene Johnson is publisher emeritus of Press Publications. Distributed weekly in:

Becoming something ‘other’ During the fi rst two years of my superintendency, we developed a new district strategic plan and site- and department-specific strategic plans. The collective voices of nearly 1,500 stakeholders had input into what we aspire to be as a school system. Out of that important strategic work, we embarked upon multiple efforts that are transforming White Bear Lake Area Schools. Last fall began with a bond referendum informational campaign. Election Day arrived, ending our Movers & with community passing the Shakers largest bond Wayne A. referendum in state history. Kazmierczak Because of that support, we are now in the midst of transformative construction projects that will address building needs across the district. The work we have done in the last three years has positioned us well as a community of education and excellence. Even in the midst of a global pandemic, our work is strategic. As we consider the last few months, I want to turn to Dr.

William Cook, who facilitated the development of our strategic plan, for additional context. He stated: “School districts will emerge from this crisis worse or better, or, if strategic, something ‘other.’ It depends on what they do now. Those that have an authentic strategic plan, developed by a strategic process, must infuse it with a new creative energy to discover and seize upon the possibilities found only in crisis.” While he was referring to the COVID-19 pandemic when he wrote this in April, his words have added meaning as we consider the unrest that followed the killing of George Floyd at the end of May. Over a year ago, we developed an equity commitment statement and adopted a four-way equity decision making protocol that has helped to guide our work. “To nurture the whole student, we disrupt systemic inequities by recognizing, honoring, and embracing all cultures with humility and respect” stands out as a key achievement in the last three years. The equity audit conducted last school year was also born out of our strategic work, and the timing of our receiving the results has positioned us well to develop actionable strategies for the years to come. We clearly have work to do. The data are

disturbing, and yet they also provide hope that we can get this right because the adults in our system know that we can do better and we want to do better. None of us have been immune to the past six months of uncertainty and unprecedented times, including the school district, but we will come together to make the 2020-21 school year the best year we can. We will refuse to be defined by a pandemic of COVID-19 or systemic racism. Our students need us. They need to connect with their peers, and they need to connect with caring adults. They need their elders to serve as role models and deliverers of hope now more than ever. Safety for staff and students will be at the forefront, and we will work together in new ways to ensure this is accomplished. Finding ways to engage with students academically, providing all learners with access to quality instruction and a renewed focus on socialemotional learning are also at the forefront. I am confident that together we will deliver all this and more. I fully believe we will emerge both better and “other.” Dr. Wayne A. Kazmierczak is the Superintendent of White Bear Lake Area Schools.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thanks for making me smile Thank you, White Bear, for the wonderful bear logo on the water tower on I-35E. It makes me smile, and lately, we could use one. Beth Artner White Bear Township

PAID LETTER We need leaders who will listen I recently moved to White Bear Lake and, so far, I am very pleased to be in a beautiful neighborhood and a great community. I know I made the right choice for my family when I moved here. However, I have some major concerns with one of my state representatives, Sen. Roger Chamberlain. This week, I was disturbed to read the article in the Minnesota Reformer titled, “A fascist manifesto is gaining fans on the right, including state Sen. Roger Chamberlain.” According to the article, Chamberlain has used his Twitter account to support a book called “Bronze Age Mindset,” which is full of racist, misogynistic and homophobic rhetoric and argues that “the proper rulers of the world are white men.” The article goes on to highlight several Neo-Nazis and white supremacists that Chamberlain follows on Twitter. What troubles me most is that in the days since the article was published, there has been no word from Chamberlain denouncing these allegations about him. We are at a moment of reckoning with grave racial injustice in our country. In order to bring about healing, we urgently need leaders who will listen to the diverse voices in our community with empathy and work to unite us regardless of our differences. In my opinion, Roger Chamberlain is not that leader. Kristi Herman Hill White Bear Lake

PAID LETTER Ami Wazlawik is the leader we need Ami Wazlawik has done a fantastic job during her first term representing the White Bear Lake area in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Rep. Working across the aisle, she has authored or co-authored legislation supporting health care, our environment, public safety, local businesses, the Lake Links trail and bonding for the County Road J/I-35E project.

MAHTOMEDI SPORTS BRIEFS

A perfect example of Rep. Wazlawik’s leadership is her handling of the Water Gremlin chemical spill. Ami worked tirelessly with residents, community groups, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and House members of both parties to hold Water Gremlin responsible and pass legislation banning the toxic chemical TCE from use in our state. Thanks to her efforts, our community is now safer and cleaner. Finally, Rep. Wazlawik has done an exceptional job communicating with and supporting her constituents during this global pandemic. In these times of uncertainty and growing partisanship, we need a leader who cares about our community, who has fought for our community and knows how to get things done for our community. We need to reelect Ami Wazlawik to the House of Representatives! Joel Juen White Bear Lake

PAID LETTER Misinformation about Rep. Wazlawik We were deeply troubled to read the three paid letters to the editor featured in the Aug. 26 issue of White Bear Press that tried to falsely link Rep. Ami Wazlawik to the shocking and painful disruption of a peaceful public event that took place in Hugo several weeks ago. First, Ami was not at the event, nor did the event take place in a part of Hugo that is within her legislative district. Second, Ami did not condone the response or the language that is at issue. After the event, Ami issued a statement explicitly saying that she did not agree with what had transpired and she asked the DFL candidate involved to apologize. The fact that this has become a significant issue in Ami’s reelection campaign tells us less about Ami and more about the character of her opponent. We do not know Ami’s opponent, but we do know this strategy. It is what extreme partisans use when they have no record on which to run. It is sleazy, disingenuous and divisive. Aren’t you sick of that by now? We are, and we do know Ami. We know that you will never find a more straight-forward, smart, conscientious and hardworking person to represent all of our interests in the Minnesota state Legislature. Isn’t that what we should all want? Debra Price-Ellingstad and Vern Ellingstad White Bear Lake

did Joey Sunder and Talia Domschot at 3-doubles 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Alexina Erickson and Mia Haskins lost at 1- and 2-singles. Ella Klein/Emma Radabaugh lost a three-setter at 2-doubles.

When the high school sports season started last week, there was no guarantee that any team would continue their schedule unabated, as a world wide pandemic rages on. The Mahtomedi boys and girls soccer games scheduled for Tuesday at Hill-Murray were postponed. Their next two playing dates, against North St. Paul and Tartan, have also been postponed. “Both of our boys and girls soccer teams have been put on a 14-day freeze related to a positive COVID case on each team. Our games with North and Tartan have been postponed,” announced Aaron Forsythe, activities director, in a brief statement Wednesday.

White Bear boys fall 1-0 to Park in soccer White Bear Lake boys soccer was unable to complete scoring opportunities throughout the game and lost to Park 1-0 on Tuesday in Cottage Grove. “This was a very frustrating loss. We once again controlled the game for 80 minutes, creating 15 goal scoring chances while limiting Park to three,” coach Karl Jende reflected. “Unfortunately, the quality of our fi nishing is not matching the quality of our build up at the moment.” The Bears are 0-1-1 with one goal in two outings. “I know our forward line has goals in them and once the fi rst couple go in, they should start scoring in bunches,” Jende said. “This is a talented team who came in with high expectations and we need to take our chances to be able to reach our full potential.”

As I assess candidates for our state and local elections, I place a high value on candidates who work to support our kids and our public schools. That’s why I will vote to reelect Ami Wazlawik as our state representative for District 38B. Ami is a longstanding member of the greater White Bear Lake community and has dedicated her professional life to serving our kids through her work in the public schools. Our kids are our future, and Ami will continue to work hard to ensure that all children in Minnesota have access to a high-quality education in our public schools. Since her election in 2018, Ami has served on the Education Policy and Early Childhood Finance and Policy Division committees. These committee assignments are a great fit for Ami, who has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in public policy from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Ami has the educational background and legislative experience to help shepherd our public schools through the challenges posed by educating kids in a time of pandemic. I am confident she will continue to work hard to ensure our kids get the best education possible while also protecting the health of the kids, school staff and our families. Please join me on Nov. 3 (or earlier — early voting opens on Sept. 18!) to reelect Ami Wazlawik as our state representative! Janet Newberg White Bear Lake

The eighth-grader trailed 0-3 in the third set against senior Lily Hanahan, but rattled off six straight game wins to cap a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. “It was awesome to watch her overcome her frustrations and compete like a champ as a young eighth grader,” coach Marla Zitelman said. Soccer teams are glad to get goals from anywhere but the White Bear Lake coaches were elated that forwards punctured the nets Tuesday. Nicole Moore and Cami Bachmeier scored two goals apiece as the Bears (2-0) rolled past Park 5-0 in Cottage Grove. Charlee Adam notched the other goal plus an assist. Moore, Emma Merriman, Jasmin Blair and Emma Wickstrom made assists. Adam flicked in one goal off a perfect throw-in from Moore. “All the scoring and assists were from our forwards, which is great to see,” co-coach John Dierkhising noted. “We really worked this past week on our offense.” The Bears are so deep in forwards they formulated a new system this year. “We wanted to get everyone on the same page, as to what would work offensively, and how we wanted to dictate play against other teams defense, and the girls did a great job of that last night.” Haley Vokaty (three saves) and Tristian Lehner (one save) played a half each in goal. Loon Chronicles V: What about these big wings

FLYING LESSONS ARE UNDERWAY, NEW CHICKS ARE ARRIVING AND THE FISH DELIVERIES KEEP ON COMING. IT HAS BEEN HARD KEEPING UP WITH ALL OF THE LOON ACTIVITY ON WHITE BEAR LAKE DURING THE LAST TWO WEEKS.

The last two weeks were insanely busy and entertaining in White Bear Lake’s Loon world. As predicted, flying lessons are now underway and watching the chicks work their big new wings has been both suspenseful and comical. Chicks, like their parents, need a long runway to become airborne. The chicks are still trying to figure out how long they need to blast along the waves before lifting up into the air. They are getting closer to successful execution, but so far all speed and no lift. We suspect that they are still trying to come to grips with their powerful wings. After one failed attempt, we spotted the chick (top right frame) pausing, for just a moment, to check the feathers under its wing, in apparent disbelief with what had just happened. The parents continue to take shifts watching over the chicks and delivering fish. The chicks are spending more and more time on their own and can stay under water for longer periods of time. No matter how far apart, they always end up finding each other, often circling and staring at each other with each reunion. A new chick arrived last week, accompanied by one of the old warrior. The chick is slightly smaller than our chicks, but already knows how to fly. On Sunday, we spotted all three chicks swimming and diving together. In the coming weeks, chicks from other lakes will start to gather on WBL, as the parents and older Loons prepare to leave in early October. The group of rafting bachelors, which now includes a pair of emerging adults and a uniquely colored juvenile Loon, has grown to a head count of up to eight. The Eagles remain an annoying presence, but the Loons’ safety plan continues to be effective. Hopefully, the Coots will arrive soon. Wishing you all a safe and healthy Labor Day weekend.

A food mill separates the apples from their peels but allows the rosy color of the skins to remain.

Planning for the start of unusual school year

The Mahtomedi School Board held its Aug. 27 meeting eye to eye in its regular digs for the fi rst time since that practice came to a screeching halt in March due to COVID-19. All attendees present in the District Center Community Room wore their blue and gold Zephyr masks and connected very well, without the frustrations of Zoom meeting technical glitches. On the agenda were tasks relating to the imminent start of the school year. To that end, the board unanimously approved the calendar of events for September and October, the highlight of which is the start of school. For grades one through 12, the first day of school was to be earlier this week on Sept. 8. For Kindergarten, the fi rst day of school will be Sept. 10. And what did school administrators expect the fi rst day of school to look like? It would likely be fluid and continue that way for the remainder of the school year, Superintendent Barb Duffrin reminded the board throughout the meeting. School will start, and the administration will continue to work on planning for the rest of the year, she said. The elementary level has been assigned hybrid learning, which is face-to-face learning four days a week and distance learning one day per week. The secondary level has been assigned a blue or a gold column to rotate face-to-face instruction two days per week, with everyone switching to distance learning on Fridays. Classes and cohorts have been assigned according to household to maintain balanced, half-fi lled classes and balanced distance-learning days for essential workers. The district honored requests from its staff and families to align the student schedule so that everyone could meet child care needs. The district is required by law to provide care for essential workers from “bell to bell” on distance-learning days. Students at Wildwood Elementary will have opportunties for a drive-by welcoming and a tour video during

the fi rst week of September, and O. H. Anderson Elementary students may have an in-person tour if they are new to the district. All students may use Google Meets to meet their teachers and see their classrooms. Some secondary and high school students have already started in-person tours and viewed welcome videos. Technology Coordinator Patrick Crothers reported that families were to be alerted about pickup times and loan agreements for their devices via SchoolMessenger by Aug. 31. As part of the Device for Every Learner Initiative, the district distributed approximately 1,000 devices last spring — a large undertaking, especially when the district had to compete with other districts to procure a device for every student, Crothers said. The devices used last spring were picked up, repaired and prepped for redistribution this fall. “The families did a really nice job taking care of the devices and were appreciative,” he said. To start the school year, Kindergarten through second grade will use iPads, and third grade though Passages will use Chromebooks. Bus routes were to be communicated to families during the week of Aug. 31 via postcard, email and ParentVue, Director of Finance and Operations Jeff Priess said. The district has added five new routes during initial planning, which may be tweaked after studying load counts of actual riders. The district has an incentive to reduce the number of routes: Each new route costs the district $55,000, he said. A walking zone for secondary level students was added by partnering with St. Andrew’s Church for a walking/biking lot during secondary school start times and end times. Parking fees for high school students were eliminated during the hybrid learning period if students reserved a parking permit before the start of school. Because 20% of elementary students are not attending school on any given day, drop-off congestion may be helped, Board Chair Lucy Payne noted.

Prepackaged breakfasts and hot lunches will be available through nutrition services at a cost for enrolled paid students and free for qualifying free/reduced lunch students who have applied, Priess said. Distance-learning students may take home prepackaged meals on Fridays at the high school, and families can preorder meals for distance-learning days. Families were to receive information about nutrition on Sept. 1. Communications Specialist Alice Seuffert provided information about the School Year Plan website, which will serve as the hub for information about the 2020-21 school year and include an overview of plans, frequently asked questions (FAQ), COVID-19 protocols and school supplies. She said that communications tools the district uses to update the community about school plans include video, Google Slides and Docs, SchoolMessenger, emails, texts and voicemails. To view the district’s School Year Plan, visit its website at mahtomedi. k12.mn.us/schoolyearplan. In other action, the board: • Heard the 2020-21 enrollment report from Duffrin. After receiving information from families about their enrollment choices, families at all grade levels preferred hybrid learning, on average, 85% to 15% over distance learning. Families were granted their choice of learning style. The enrollment numbers are down 24 students from the original budget projection, she said.

• Heard the 2019-2020 preliminary audit update from Priess. Work on the audit began in June and should be completed by the end of September, he said. Higher enrollment than projected, entitlements not spent and cost reductions related to school closure have beefed up the general fund to healthy levels. Adding five bus routes could cut into the surplus to the tune of $250,000, and special revenue funds that rely on program participation (food service and communi-

ty education) won't be available, he added. When all is said and done, with the hybrid model in place, the district will be closer to the normal budget, Priess said.

• Heard a report from Priess on the 2021-22 budget development timeline. As required by state law, the board must approve a preliminary budget prior to July 1 for any given fi scal year. The planned budget development timeline for fi scal year 2021-22 was presented for ultimate board approval in May 2021. With the audit fi nished, the fi nancial department turned to developing the upcoming budget. For fi scal year 2021 (FY21), the state has been able to fund a 2% increase to the basic general education formula, which provides about $23.84 million, or 56% of the district's general fund revenue. The 2% increase gives the district an increase each year of about $400,000. FY21 marks seven consecutive years that the funding formula has increased by 2%. However, as the state government is in the red by some $4 billion, the annual 2% funding formula increase may not be a reality moving forward, he said. The board will continue to review and approve monthly and year-to-date revenue and expenditure reports for the purpose of validating budget assumptions. • Formally accepted $890 in donations during the month of July. Donations include $500 from the 3M Foundation Parent Volunteer Program for Mahtomedi High School student needs; $250 from Jerome and Shirley Audorff to the Mahtomedi Area Preschool; and $140 from Wells Fargo Community Support for O. H. Anderson Elementary School student needs. The board next meets at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in the District Center Community Room, 1520 Mahtomedi Ave. Loretta Harding

MAHTOMEDI CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Mahtomedi City Council at its Sept. 1 meeting took the following action: • Adopted the Century Avenue Small Area Plan. The purpose of the plan is to study a redevelopment area located in the southwestern part of the city, approximately 0.2 miles north of I-694 at Century Avenue. Century Avenue runs along the western edge of the potential redevelopment site, dividing White Bear Lake and Ramsey County to the west from Mahtomedi and Washington County to the east. City planning officials will study this area in more detail than the recently completed 2040 Comprehensive Plan and provide guidance on the feasibility of future land uses, infrastructure (roads and utilities) and economic development activities. The redevelopment site is approximately 8 acres in size, and consists of five homesteads interspersed with undeveloped parcels on the north part of the site, and a commercial center on the south part of the site. The commercial center has space available for approximately eight to nine businesses. Currently there are seven operating businesses, including three restaurants, a liquor store, a hair salon, massage business and an e-cigarette business. Included for consideration are Century Avenue turnback options, now under negotiation among several government entities. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is considering turning the road back to Washington and Ramsey counties. All government entities have plans for road improvements to the segment of Century Avenue through this project area. Options discussed include a three-lane concept or a four-lane concept. Both concepts include significant needs for additional right of way, which will impact the Mahtomedi properties. • Approved construction pay voucher No. 9 (Final) for the Echo Lake Improvement Project to T. A. Schifsky and Sons Inc. in the amount of $85,306.55.

• Approved the engineering services agreement with Barr Engineering for Phase 3 of the Glenmar Flow Diversion Project. Phase 3 of the project is the actual diversion of the water itself, after preparations have already been made upstream and downstream. The water has historically flowed from east to west; it will now flow from the east in a northerly direction out to Stillwater Road. • Approved an encroachment agreement with the owners at 859 Arcwood Road. The city has a drainage and utility easement over the southern portion of the property, and the property owners wish to install a fence across the easement to enclose their small backyard. The property owners have agreed to install gates on either end of the easement to allow city personnel access to the end of the storm sewer pipe for cleaning, inspection and maintenance of the outlet. • Passed a resolution declaring costs to be assessed and ordered preparation of proposed assessments for Phase 4 West – Historic District improvements. The total cost of the project was $4.6 million, with the amount to be specially assessed at 11.7% of the total amount, or about $542,500. The remaining 88.3% of the project, or $4.1 million, will be financed by general tax levy, city utility funds and available city reserves as determined by council. • Passed a resolution calling for and ratifying an assessment hearing with respect to Phase 4 West – Historic District improvements. The assessment hearing for this project will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 5. Notice of the public hearing will be published at least once in the city's official newspaper and at least two weeks prior to the hearing. Notice will also be mailed to the owners of each parcel described in the assessment roll. Assessed property owners will have 30 days from the date the assessment rolls are approved by council to pay their assessments at City Hall without interest. From that point, assessment accounts will be

certified to the county for payment with interest over 10 years. Further details will be explained at the public hearing. • Presented the 25-Year Service Award to Public Works Director Bob Goebel, who revealed he has actually worked for the city for 30 years, if his seasonal work were included. He said his most memorable moments include making the newspaper a couple of times. “I was on the news in 1996 when I put a truck into a pond during a skating party. We found a big lizard a couple of years ago, too. I should have taken notes to write a book,” he said. “It's been a long ride, especially this summer — it's been delightful,” Goebel said. • Scheduled a work session just prior to the Sept. 15 council meeting to discuss safe routes to school for walkers and bikers. Council Member Jeff Ledermann suggested inviting school district officials and members of the community who have been working on the green initiative. City staff and engineers would also attend to help the group focus on a few ideas to move forward. “Discussion should also include a fiscal note,” Council Member Richard Brainerd said. “Everything we do will cost money.” • Heard a report from City Administrator Scott Neilson that Washington County has CARES funds available for small business relief. For the fi rst round, 375 applications were accepted; 11 businesses in Mahtomedi had applied. For subsequent rounds, not more than 75 applications will be accepted. Fund recipients will share less than $5 million in revenues. Once county funds are exhausted, the city will be called on to provide CARES funding, Neilson said. The council next meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at City Hall, 600 Stillwater Road or via teleconference. Loretta Harding

COMMUNITY BRIEFS St. Andrew’s resumes community meals St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi is once again providing Thursday Community Meals beginning Sept. 17 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to pick up a hot meal and eat together tailgate-style in the specially marked Great Hall parking lot. Live entertainment will also be provided. No registration necessary. The church is located at 900 Stillwater Road in Mahtomedi.

Become an Extension Master Gardener The application period to become a University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener is open through Oct. 1. Extension Master Gardeners bring science-based horticulture knowledge and practices to Minnesota, promoting healthy landscapes and building communities through volunteer efforts. Master Gardeners are respected as reliable sources of gardening information. Becoming a Master Gardener gives volunteers a chance to expand their interests in areas including sustainability, local foods, pollinators and climate change. Master Gardeners also put their skills to work conserving

green spaces, native plants and clean water. The University of Minnesota has trained thousands of Master Gardeners; each year, those individuals contribute more than 140,000 hours of service in Minnesota communities. This year, the training will be all online and spread out over 14 weeks. Individuals commit to complete online training and 50 hours of volunteering in the first year. After the first year, they commit 25 hours to annual volunteer work; many choose to devote more time to the program. “Now more than ever, people around the state are turning to gardening as a soothing, family-friendly endeavor and a way to serve neighborhoods and communities. Interest in growing food is high, as is commitment to addressing local issues such as water quality and preservation of native plants, said Tim Kenny, statewide director, Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program. To learn more about the program and apply, visit z.umn.edu/MG_info.

Beware of invasive jumping worms The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is cautioning gardeners

and anglers to be on the lookout for invasive jumping worms. These destructive worms can quickly degrade soils and damage garden plants and lawns. “Jumping worms are a relatively new invasive species in Minnesota and they are a threat to gardens and forests, said Laura Van Riper, DNR terrestrial invasive species coordinator. “They make rich soil more like coffee grounds. They eat plant roots, damaging garden plants and sod. Jumping worms are a type of earthworm that looks similar to other common earthworms such as nightcrawlers. However, they wiggle intensely when disturbed and sometimes appear to be jumping. Native to Asia, jumping worms have been confirmed in limited areas of Minnesota since 2006, mainly in the Twin Cities and western suburbs and in Rochester. It’s believed they spread throughout North America by people moving potted plants, soil, compost, mulch and fishing bait. Jumping worms are a poor choice for bait because they break into segments when handled. “The good news is, jumping worms are not well established in Minnesota and there are actions people can take to

prevent their spread. We need gardeners and anglers to be vigilant and to contact the DNR when they think they’ve found jumping worms,â€? Van Riper said. Other steps that help: • Don’t buy worms advertised as jumping worms, “snake worms,â€? “Alabama jumpersâ€? or “crazy wormsâ€? for any purpose. • Anglers should dispose of any unwanted bait worms in the trash. • Gardeners should inspect incoming mulch or plants for jumping worms and if swapping plants with friends, wash off the soil and share the plants as bare root plants. • Recreationists should brush the mud off their boots and equipment. If people think they’ve found jumping worms, they should take high-resolution photos showing the ring around the worm’s body in relation to its head and report jumping earthworms using www.eddmaps.org, or contact the DNR Information Center at 888-6466367 or info.dnr@state.mn.us. More information about jumping worms, including photos and videos, are available at dnr.state.mn.us.

Sculpture reflects point in time Above: Sieng Lee makes some adjustments to the portion of the sculpture he worked on in collaboration with fellow artist Kyle Frederickson. The sculpture, currently on display outside the White Bear Center for the Arts was created in response to the death of George Floyd and the protests and civil unrest that followed. Above: Artists Sieng Lee and Kyle Frederickson pose outside the White Bear Center for the Arts with the sculpture they worked on separately and then merged into one piece. The artists said that the sculpture is intended to reflect a point in time and initiate conversations about the healing power of art. It is the art center’s first foray into the realm of community based public art in what could become a series and another way for people to engage with art at any time of the day. Sieng Lee said he intended his portion of the sculpture to be open to interpretation. His use of reflective tape gives the sculpture added dimension when viewed at night.

2B WHITE BEAR/VADNAIS HEIGHTS PRESS

www.presspubs.com

Coach: Jim Driscoll (30th year) Assistant: Lisa Irsfeld Last year: Girls tied for 1st in conference, boys 4th Captains: Boys: Ismail Bah (Senior), Lucas Granec (Junior), Ryan Malvey (Junior); Girls: Lauren Johnson (Senior), Kaia Kapfer (Senior), Lauren Whiterabbit (Senior) Returning starters: Boys: Bah, Granec, Malvey, Chris Benson (Junior); Girls: Kapfer, Whiterabbit, Helen Atkins (Junior), Maya Tarnowski (Junior), Claire Wirka (Junior), Makayla Fischer (Junior), Anna Thompson (Junior), Sarah Brings (Sophomore), Greta Liner (Sophomore) Other letter winners: Owen Affolter (Junior), Ethan Carlson (Sophomore), Max Nelson (Junior), Hayden Schaefer (Sophomore), Elex Tell (Junior) Fast facts: Fischer, Whiterabbit, Kapfer and Brings made all-conference in 2019. Coach on team: “Both teams have a lot of young talent and with another year of development each team could be very good. Goals: Boys team to finish in the top four at conference and get three all-conference athletes. Girls team to win conference and five athletes all-conference.” Coach on pandemic: “MSHSL has shortened the season, limited number of meets, and established many protocols for COVID-19. Trying to get distance runners to socially distance is difficult. But it is all things we need to do to get through the pandemic.” SCHEDULE Friday, Sept. 4: Intra squad meet Saturday, Sept. 12: vs. St. Thomas Academy and Tartan at St. Croix Bluffs, 1:35 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18: vs. Hastings and Tartan, home, 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26: vs. Hill-Murray and So. St. Paul at St. Croix Bluffs, 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3: vs. Sibley at St. Croix Bluffs, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10: Metro East at St. Croix Bluffs

ZEPHYRS // MAHTOMEDI SWIMMING // GIRLS Coach: Mike Goldman Assistants: Micah Goldman, Dan Kizaur, Tim Baden (diving) Captains: Clare Fritsch (senior), Ryann Buttke (senior), Lauren Anderson (senior), Mia Fitzgerald (senior) Fast facts: Skylar Clowser (jr) is returning state qualifier in 500 freestyle … Only two seniors last year, so most of the lineup returns, including medley relay team that qualified for state …. Practices during pandemic are split between three groups with staggered practice times and split lanes.

ZEPHYRS // MAHTOMEDI SOCCER // BOYS Coach: Dominic Isaac (6th year) Assistants: Andy Olsen, Ahmed Charia, Noah Curran, Logan Morrison, Alex Diez Last year: 8-4-4 overall, 3-23 conference Captains: Ethan Peterson (Senior Forward/M), TJ Bruner (Senior Forward), Nolan Pratumwon (Senior Forward), Kyle Schmidt (Junior M/Forward), Anthony Palmer (Senior Defense) Returning starters: Peterson, Bruner, Schmidt, Pratumwon, Palmer, Leo De La Torre (Sophomore Defense), Joey Heisch (Junior Defense), Yassin Hussein (Junior M), Luke Yee Yick (Junior M/Forward), Michael Williams (Junior Defense), Karl Lawrie (Senior M) Other letter winners: Grant Dardis (Junior Defense), Joey Padelford (Sophomore M), David Azcona (Senior M), Joe Palmer (Senior M) In the mix: Palmer, Connor Gillet (Junior) Fast facts: Bruner, Peterson, Heinsch, Schmidt made all-conference in 2019. Bruner was top scorer last year with 13 goals and 5 assists. Pratumwon, a starter in grades 8-9-10, played for Minnesota United’s youth academy last year. Anthony Palmer, a starter in 10th grade, missed 2019 season with back injury Coach on team: “Goals are to win the conference and hopefully win a state championship. We are very deep from top to bottom. We truly have 22 guys we can play. The return of Nolan and Anthony will be gigantic. Anthony is back healthy and ready to lead the back line. We went 8-4-4 last year with many ties and overtime loses. I just think we learned from those games, and building off last year will really push us to the top. We have an explosive offense and stout defense.” Coach on pandemic: “There are many things that we had to eliminate that may have been minor but are different, like team dinners and team bonding events. Biggest downfall is being limited to 11 games and only playing the conference. We do think the Metro East is strong, but we had a very competitive schedule for this year, and with this team would have been very fun to play all 16 games against some of state’s best.” SCHEDULE Thursday, Aug. 27: at Simley, 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29: Hastings, noon Tuesday, Sept. 1: at Hill-Murray, 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3: vs North St. Paul, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8: Tartan, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15: at South St. Paul, 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17: at St. Thomas Acad., 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22: Henry Sibley, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30: conference tournament Saturday, Oct. 3: conference tournament Wednesday, Oct. 7: conference tournament

ZEPHYRS // MAHTOMEDI SOCCER // GIRLS Coach: Dave Wald (15th year)

Coach: Aaron Freer (2nd year)

Assistants: Brad Gudenkauf, Glen Lisowy (goalies), Greg Karp (JV), Allison Eitel (B and C)

Assistants: Kelly Bruggeman, Amber Washington Last year: 17-3 overall, conference champion, section runner-up, ranked No. 3 in state

Last year: 16-2-2 overall, state Class A champion, section and conference champion (6-0-1) Captains: Erika Broten (Senior Defense), Jojie Barry (Senior Defense), Lanie Padelford (Senior Defense) Returning starters: Broten, Barry, Padelford, Mickey Stockness (Senior Defense) Other letter winners: Paige Janssen (Junior Goalie), Audrey Barry (Junior Forward), Christa Taival (Senior Defense), Lily Lindquist (Sophomore M), Katelyn “KB” Beulke (Sophomore Forward), Anabel Hillstrom (Sophomore M), Cambelle Waldspurger (Junior M) Fast facts: Zephyrs have won three consecutive state titles and nine overall. Broten made all-conference in 2019 In the mix: Delaney Sellman (Junior Defense), Ellie Wolsfeld (Senior Forward), Stella Grabow (Freshman Goalie), Kalli Halatsis (Sophomore M), Kate Holst (Junior Forward), Savanna Stockness (Freshman Forward), Haley James (Senior Defense), Kaitlyn Moltzan (Freshman M), Maddie McCoy (8th M) Coach on team: “Almost all of our defense from last year’s state championship team is returning. We also have a lot of depth that we will try to use to tire opponents out. We had a lot of depth within our program and despite losing 13 players from last year’s team we had numerous players ready to step up this year. Right now we are focused on improving each day and each game. Our goal is to compete for a conference championship.” Coach on pandemic: “What’s different is not knowing if we will have playoffs, and not being guaranteed that the season will even happen. Trying to coach with a mask on and trying to bring a team together while remaining socially distant.” SCHEDULE Thursday, Aug. 27: at Simley, 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29: Hastings, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1: at Hill-Murray, 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3: vs North St. Paul, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8: Tartan, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15: at South St. Paul, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22: Henry Sibley, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29: conference tournament Friday, Oct. 2: conference tournament Tuesday, Oct. 6: conference tournament

Captains: Lauren Splett (Senior), Liv Kent (Senior), Alayna Schwieters (Senior) Returning starters: Splett, Kent, Schweiters, Annika Munson (Freshman), Mari Meger (Sophomore), Sonya Potthoff (Sophomore), Campbell Albers (Sophomore), Kate Hoffman (Freshman), Kayla Meslow (Senior), Hanna Bradt (Senior) In the mix: Nina Vander Louw (Junior), Kathryne Foley (Freshman), Megan Langer (Sophomore) Fast facts: Munson was state singles qualifier in 7th and 8th grade. Ten starters or part-time starters return. Zephyrs likely to be ranked in top 5 in state Projected lineup: Top 3 singles return: Munson, Splett alternating at 1-2 and Meger at 3. Other slots: Potthoff at 4S; Kent at 1D; Schwieters 1D, 2D; Albers, Bradt, Hoffman, Meslow, Vander Louw also doubles. Coach on team: “The team has a lot of experience and we have five seniors. Our team chemistry is strong, and we have a strong work ethic. To repeat as conference champions is both a goal and expectation of ours. We have a resilient group doing their very best to make the most of this modified season.” Coach on pandemic: “We are only allowed to play conference opponents. In years past, our strength of schedule has come from a strong non-conference schedule. We are thankful to be playing at all this season, but we are definitely bummed out about the work we put into creating a difficult schedule outside of our conference.” SCHEDULE Tuesday, Aug. 25: South St. Paul, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27: at North St. Paul, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1: at Henry Sibley, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3: Hill-Murray, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8: at Hastings, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10: Tartan, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15: Simley, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17: conference tournament Tuesday, Sept. 22: conference tournament Tuesday, Sept. 24: conference tournament

Pankow, Schneider and Blanding qualified for state … It’s the 30th year of coaching overall for Percival.

Fast facts: Locke was all-conference, Mattson honorable mention. Locke, Thomas, McLaughlin, Mattson were in section championship lineup Coach on team: “We will be a pack running team this year. All seven varsity runners could finish within 30 seconds. We will have a younger team, where most teams in the conference and regions are senior-loaded. The boys had a good summer of training and if we stay healthy we could surprise at the end of the season.” Coach on pandemic: “All races are up in the air and training looks different with social distancing.”

In the mix: Katelyn Porter (Sophomore), Rosie Sommars (Freshman), Madelyn Bystrom (Sophomore) Coach on team: “We have a very experienced team, led by our seniors. The team did a great amount of training over the summer. We have great leadership from our coaches and captains. The team gets along well and has a positive attitude. They are willing to work hard on a daily basis. Our team goal every year is that everyone grows as a person and as an athlete. If there is a state meet this season, then our goal is to qualify as a team.” Coach on pandemic: “Our practices look different as we have to socially distance during our workouts. When we are close together we wear a mask. Several runners did not come out due to concerns regarding the virus. Our races are limited to competing against teams only in our conference. Races are limited to three teams and 25 racers. And as of right now, we do not know if we will have a section or a state meet. Despite all these changes, it has been wonderful to be back with the team and watch them compete.”

SCHEDULE (BOYS, GIRLS) Saturday, Aug. 29: at Roseville, 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19: conference tri at Park of Cottage Grove, TBD Friday, Sept. 25: conference tri at Chippewa Middle School, St. Paul, TBD Thursday, Oct. 1: conference tri at TBD Thursday, Oct. 6: conference finals at Tanners Brook Golf Course, Forest Lake, 9 a.m.

3B

In the mix: Jeff Odamtten (Senior Forward), Snow Ball (Junior Midfield), JB Morris (Senior Defense), Garrett Thom (Senior Midfield), Jack Volkmeier (Senior Midfield), Eli Treichel (Sophomore Defense) Fast facts : Rogers and Vargas were all-conference in 2019 … Bears had just 16 goals in 15 games so they need to improve offense …. Odamtten was a football starter last year Coach on team: “We have a number of returning, experienced players across all lines who are hungry for success and who are continuing to grow the culture of the program through their leadership and hard work. Our attacking line has an abundance of speed and goal-scoring potential, with a midfield line capable of controlling games, anchored by a physical defensive line. We have a well-balanced roster with a good mix of both returning and incoming players who are all looking to prove themselves.” Coach on goals: “Finish in the top half of the conference with a .500 or above record. We have played very good soccer in stretches for the past two years, only to be undone by individual errors at crucial moments. We took a chance on youth, which means we took our knocks the past two seasons. I believe we are ready to take the next step as a program.” Coach on pandemic: “We understand how lucky we are to have been granted the chance to play. Because we know the season could end at any moment, we have to take each day as it comes and make the most of it. We understand we have a responsibility to our community and that we have the chance to give them something to cheer for during very difficult times.” SCHEDULE Thursday, Aug. 27: Cretin-Derham Hall, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1: at Park of Cottage Grove, 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3: at Roseville Area, 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10: at Forest Lake, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15: Mounds View, 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17: at Irondale, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22: East Ridge, 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24: at Woodbury, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29: Stillwater, 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1: conference tournament Friday, Oct. 2: conference tournament Saturday, Oct. 3: conference tournament

I start each practice by saying ‘Mask up Bears!’ We are constantly trying to stay six feet from teammates when jogging and stretching. It’s a constant reminder we are all in this together. SCHEDULE Thursday, Aug. 27: at Park of Cottage Grove, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1: Cretin-Derham Hall, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3: at Roseville Area, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8: East Ridge, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10: at Stillwater, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15: Irondale, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17: at Forest Lake, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22: Mounds View, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24: at Woodbury, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29: Conference tournament

Returning starters: Schoeberl, Eckerle, Abby Fettinger (Senior Defense), Charlee Adam (Senior Forward), Kylie Amon (Junior Defense)

Coach on team: “After graduating a large class in 2020, we have a very fresh and young squad … We are excited to see what this season brings.”

Other letter winners: Nicole Moore (Junior Forward), Chloe Simanek (Junior Midfield), Haley Vokaty (Senior Goalie), Emma Wickstrom (Junior Forward), Jasin Blair (Sophomore Forward)

Coach on pandemic: “We have added mental training and more dry land into our daily practices in order to rotate through groups in the water … Meets will also look different, with no fans present, and only 8 meets scheduled. We currently do not know if we will have a post-season or what that will look like … We are in this together and working each day to be sure we are showing up as best we can with the circumstances and constraints we are give.”

Fast facts: Eckerle made all-conference in 2019 …. Top two scorers in team history (Kayla Anderson and Clair Odmark) have graduated the past two years … Bears trying to win backto-back SEC titles for first time, and trying to end five straight years of losing in section semifinals Coach Dierkhising on team: “We have a lot of new young players, but we will be very athletic and skilled at all positions, so the team will be much deeper. Our team speed and midfield play should carry us, and we have two very good goalkeepers … We will need some forwards to step up (scoring). Nicole Moore looks like she could make the biggest jump and impact. Charlee Adam has the most experience … Our defense should be solid with Maren Schoeberl, Abby Fettinger and Kylie Amon all returning … Because of our depth of midfielders, we are changing formations and going with a 3-back set with an additional midfielder … We are hoping with the experience of the defenders and the athleticism of our midfielders, we can control the midfield and get some additional offense from that group.” Coach Dierkhising on pandemic: “We are fortunate to be playing and hope to complete the season. There are a lot more protocols this year …. We won’t be having any Wednesday team dinners, or our big all team program kickoff potluck … Our home games, we will be on the home sidelines for the first time, and the away fans will be on the opposite stands.” SCHEDULE Thursday, Aug. 27: Cretin-Derham Hall, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1: at Park of Cottage Grove, 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3: at Roseville Area, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10: at Forest Lake, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15: Mounds View, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17: at Irondale, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22: East Ridge, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24: at Woodbury, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29: Stillwater, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1: conference tournament Friday, Oct. 2: conference tournament Saturday, Oct. 3: conference tournament

Weather tidbits

Brought to you by WeathermanWatson.com

We wasted some great State Fair weather on a non State Fair year. How does that happen? Fortunately the weather was great over a major holiday weekend. How often does that happen? The unofficial end of summer was this past week and now we await the “official start of fall. Fall starts on September 22 so we’re still a few weeks away. It’s still a bit early for fall colors. Generally colors peak here late September and early October. Astro Note: Venus right of moon the morning of Monday, September 14. Frank Watson is a local Meteorologist who operates a weather station in White Bear Lake. Weather data and observation are from his weather station and trips around the area. Frank can be found on the internet at WeathermanWatson.com.

Aric is a sophomore aviation major at Minnesota State University-Mankato and Captain of the Flight Team. — Submitted 2. Volunteers for “Hearts & Hammers” helped a neighbor in Birchwood who is having health issues. They painted, raked, and trimmed trees. — Submitted 3. Greg Drawbaugh spotted this Black-throated Gray Warbler at Sucker Lake Park as he was looking for migrating fall warblers. According to the Minnesota Birding Facebook group, this was the first opportunity in 20 years to see the bird in Minnesota, as it was thousands of miles out of its range. — Greg Drawbaugh

COVID-19 BRIEF City to allocate CARES funding The White Bear Lake City Council has approved the allocation of CARES legislation Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) funds for programs to aid residents, business owners and non-profits. Programs include grants for businesses and non-profits who have experienced a significant negative impact due to the pandemic, residents who have lost income due to the pandemic and community members who live or work in the city and need mental health support. Additionally the funding will be used to support the purchase of personal protective equipment for houses of worship, an innovative meal delivery service for

those experiencing need and to offset unbudgeted expenses incurred by the city in response to the pandemic. The City is working in partnership with a number of local and regional partners to administer the various programs including Northeast Youth and Family Services, New Trax, Community Action Partnership of Ramsey and Washington Counties (CAP RW), and SPEDCO. Some programs will be administered on a first come-fi rst served basis, such as the mental health program and the resident assistance grants while others such as the business and non-profit grants will have a limited application period with grants being awarded

after the close of the application. While it is hoped there is sufficient funding to support everyone who seeks assistance from the programs, funding is limited so those who qualify for support should plan to apply early in the process for programs offered on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis. Due to mandated deadlines to spend the funds or return them, all programs will be closed no later than early November. CAP RW will begin accepting applications for the resident assistance program on September 14, with other program applications opening mid to late September.
