Getting reacquainted White Bear Lake Area School District staff and faculty members gather outside the community auditorium before the start of the annual convocation program Monday, Aug. 29. The ceremony is a traditional prelude to the start of the new school year in District 624. Find more photos on page 5.
The news is good. White Bear Lake teen Kayla Jones is walking and communicating, although she may give odd answers to simple questions. Her dad, city Councilman Dan Jones, said every day is a good day for his 19-year-old daughter, who is overcoming tremendous odds following serious injuries she suffered July 30. That Saturday night Kayla was hit by a pickup truck while crossing a busy street in Duluth. Dan said a therapist called her a "1 percenter" — meaning her chances for recovery were not favorable. "From the beginning to where she is today, her chance of survival was slim," Dan said. "We were told many patients wouldn't be this far along. There's a lot more optimism in rehab as opposed to where we came from in SEE KAYLA STRONG, PAGE 8A
Corn roast at the fair: A family affair BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR
FALCON HEIGHTS – At the State Fair corn roast stand, by the grandstand, if you look closely you will see either a blonde or a brunette young lady standing above the roasters with a clipboard while hundreds of ears of steaming corn are passed to customers by dozens of workers. If you look even closer, one of them might be wearing corn cob earrings. Those sisters – Sarah Ribar on the morning shift and Libby Huettl on the evening shift – literally grew up at the State Fair corn roast stand and are shift supervisors. Their dad, Brad Ribar of White Bear Township, started the stand in 1985 when Libby was just a baby. “I have been at the fair every year since I was born,” said 25-year-old Sarah, a 2009 White Bear Lake High School alumna. Their brother
Matt Ribar, also a White Bear Lake alum, now operates his own fair food stand not far away; he sells poutine. Sarah said she doesn’t take a full-time job unless her boss allows her to take time off to work the State Fair with her dad each August. She works at a salon. Libby is a teacher. Brad Ribar employs over 100 people at his corn roast stand. Several are usually from the White Bear Lake area each year. Ribar’s neighbor Connor Donovon, a 2014 White Bear Lake High School alum, is in his sixth summer at the corn stand. Donovan’s job is to unload the truck of corn each night and put the hundreds of ears in a giant fridge. Each night, corn that was picked that day arrives at the stand for the next day’s customers.
